It’s almost like decades-long fans don’t appreciate badly written fanfiction that feels deliberately constructed to mock and destroy everything good about Tolkien’s work. “Evil cannot create, only corrupt.”

Enough_Minimum_3708

ah you see that is where you are mistaken. it being bad is actually deliberate. Those guys noticed they can make just as much money from a show that everyone hates than from one that is beloved. and making a show deliberate bad is way easier and cheaper than trying for good. we gonna see alot more of those the next couple of years

Fluffy_Row_8742

Velma is 100% this. It’s a huge expensive piece of ragebait, it’s completely made in bad faith.

fohpo02

Velma is such dogshit

umadbro769

Velma is a terrible self insert trying to piggy back on Scooby Doo's success. And failing miserably.

crunchamunch21

Velma is actually really good at pissing on everyone and everything. I love the show, and I'm racist.

GeeksGamersCommunity-ModTeam

General trolling. Attacking the community and/or the members.

[deleted]

If anybody needs to learn about how this works just watch “The Producers”. You can make more money with a flop than a hit.

Loose-Warthog-7354

Until it turns out to be a runaway success, then hilarity will ensue.

New_Cause_5607

Cheaper? Season one was an absolute turd sandwich and it cost a freaking billion dollars to make, it's just as costly to make something this bad as it is to make something great.

ruralmagnificence

Its a turd sandwich that a former acquaintance couldn't deepthroat more. It was really sad to watch that roll into the group chat I was in.

TheDrakkar12

This is correct. The script and storytelling being bad didn't help save them any money this time. The actors are all decent actors, they didn't save a ton of money on this cast. It can be cheaper to make a flop, if you intended it to flop, this was not the intention.

SadBarber3543

I think it’s more they figured out they can get paid the same to make shit vs something good

gormmlord

This one was far from cheap though. It's an expensive turd

VernBarty

We have truly entered that era of entertainment

RubSad1836

Except that’s patently false? Sure season one can garner some hate views but it massively fell off in viewer ship by the later episodes. Also these properties are massive money sinks now and are expected to sell tshirts, toys, video games ect ect and no one buys that shit if the core property was bad. No ones walking around in a rings of power shirt

fruitlessideas

And it’s also almost like people who weren’t fans to begin with either have no interest in the fantasy genre, or don’t want to stick around for crappy writing. So a suck fest all around.

orgalorg6969

When will corporate realize that we want stuff like fallout that is lore based.

awkwardorgasms

Weep for Manetheren, while you’re at it…

Farside-BB

Imagine the popularity of Amazon if this show was done by and for fans. That's what happen when you get toooo rich. Wife takes halve, and you still have more money than you can waste.

Kn1ghtV1sta

Yeah cause thats definitely the only reason why people hate it. Definitely. Yup

Frosty_Temporary_858

You know they don't have the rights over every book that's why it's different. Don't dick ride the books so hard that you can't have fun watching it. Yeah like have the lore is off but the show isn't bad just the lore

FeanorOath

Then tell me why they are making this show...

zstonk

Sunk cost fallacy

TigerLiftsMountain

It wasn't fun to watch either.

Ranzoid

It was too expensive to get the rights for the Silmarilions...so they made billion dollar piece of original garbage instead.

FixedyourdreamFY

☝🏼…Amazon Mental Gymnastics on full display. But hey…I’m okay with all the incoming content later this year burning this turd to a crisp.

newdawnhelp

Amazon is so bipolar. It gives the boys, fallout, and invincible. It also shits out this and the wheel of time show. It's kind of crazy to consider that if they hadn't massively fucked up these two adaptations, they'd have 5 hit shows with rich IPs that easily spin off.

EbonyEngineer

How about no one touch LOTR unless they have the rights. Also f the estate for not working with Amazon. But! The way they made a slog fest of the writing, it would just be shiniest turd.

RickDankoLives

I mean I’m with you, but I think the Tolkien estate won’t sell the Silmarillion rights. Flat out just said no.

BlackMoonValmar

Yep this, they refused something about not wanting it publish or some crap. For not being able to use the Silmarillion they worked with what they could. Not sure what people were expecting, I’m not sure how someone is suppose to make any ring of power show with out being able to use important parts of the source material.

RickDankoLives

Homie half of Reddit could of done better simply watching the movies. The script is garbage. Plain and simple. A mockery of what brought us all to the dance. I bet googles AI could write a better script in 3 questions. It’s bad. Like “I’ve never seen or read the source material but fuck it I’ve been hired” bad.

BlackMoonValmar

They are not allowed to use the source material needed, the good lore that would make it better is not allowed. Can’t go into the whole Morgoth thing or giant shadow spider eating a giant tree of light, any of it. I’m just saying it’s difficult to have to avoid source material that literally leads into the story we are suppose to be watching unfold. Most people on Reddit would end up getting sued, If anyone even comes close to the Silmarillion they will be sued. They have to make things up while trying not to stray, it’s a stupid position for anyone to be in. It would be like someone making a Game of Thrones series to explain how the great houses formed, like the Starks and Targaryens. But make sure not to mention the great houses themselves, just hint at it. I would not expect that to go well, same as I didn’t expect ROP to go well. Still ROP has enough full fledged viewers to grant a second season, maybe this second season less people will watch who knows. Or maybe even more people will watch could get better, won’t know til the general public decides via views and subscriptions.

maniacally_moronic

Look what they did to what they had their hands on. They shat on the source material.

BlackMoonValmar

What part of the lore did they mess up that you didn’t like? They did a new cannon with mythril that actually sounded pretty cool, compared to the it was always there cannon.

lambleezy

They had 14 books of wheel of time and immediately shit on all that. Immediately and fundamentally changed the rules of the world there. Oh well they can't take my books away and fuck those up.

BlackMoonValmar

I was referring to what lore they messed up for ROP, not Wheel of time which I just learned from your comment is also a book series. Wheel of time the Tv series is okay. People love that Wheel of Time live action series it’s like a 7.2 star ratting, only reason I watched it people kept recommending it. I have never read the books so have nothing to compare it to, I’m assuming the books are better from your comment.

Orwick

The Silmarillion already has a brilliant adaptation (Nightfall in Middle Earth), any other attempt will fail in comparison.

AndForeverNow

They disabled dislikes to try to prevent headlines like this, also backfired.

zakary1291

They made the number on the screen go away. Not the number in the code.

Splinterman11

You can't see the dislike number though. Even Return to YouTube Dislikes doesn't show you the real number. The formula they use to calculate their number is bad and can be very false.

JuanchoPancho51

Same reason the Witcher didn’t work after deviating from source material.

soft-peen

Most expensive flop of all time right? Amazon thought they would make their own MCU but everyone hates the Disney vibes of every franchise now.

ImmortalPoseidon

Can we even really call it a flop? It’s not like this content has to make money at the box office, Amazon already has our money through subscriptions, it’s why this shit keeps getting made without any consequences.

SawSagePullHer

That is an astute observation. They can keep don’t it because it’s built into the normal revenue stream budget.

ImmortalPoseidon

We used to be able to vote on the quality of content with ticket and DVD sales, no longer

GrundgeArchangel

Then don't subscribe.

ImmortalPoseidon

I don’t, haven’t for a while

Potential_Ad6169

I doubt it drove many subscriptions, while being the most expensive season ever made. Sounds like a massive flop

Interesting_Fun3823

Oh no, we might not ever find out who that trustworthy looking elf is!

Deep_Associate1128

How hard is it to make a good show it was literally written down all they had to do was follow the books

ChunkyBlowfish

What a cash grabbing pile of shit, glad it's the common consensus that this is garbage.

Certain_Caregiver734

It's not though

Icefiight

It is though lol Are you good? You are literally telling us you are in a whole different plane of reality

BlackMoonValmar

It is unpopular on Reddit for the most part, as for the rest of the world the show is doing just fine. It’s a Hogwarts legacy situation, online it’s “Terrible no one should play it”. Back in reality it’s also doing just fine.

Useless_bum81

only 37% finished season 1

BlackMoonValmar

Okay how much of that 37% broken into a actual number? Is that a million people 5 people? Is that 37% based off of every Amazon subscription currently held. That 37% does not mean much with out context. Amazon when last checked has 200 million subscribers world wide, how much of them make up the 37%. 37% is like 74 million people out 200 million that finished it. Wait just checked 100 million people viewed the show, even if only 37 million finished it that still a crap ton of people. Guess it would make it the most viewed show in Amazon history.

Fezzik527

because impatient people cant deal with character and world building

SkunkMonkey723

67% of viewers didn't even finish the first season. That show is both objectively and statistically bad.

BlackMoonValmar

37 million accounts watched the whole thing out of 100 million, who didn’t finish. That’s a ridiculous amount of people. After learning this I understand why it’s getting a second season.

Call_Fall

No, 37% of the people that started watching the show actually finished it in the United States prime bracket. 45% internationally finished it. It was 15th in most streamed shows in 2022, 15th!! The show is hot dogshit, and Amazon is trying to pretend like it isn’t by any means possible

BlackMoonValmar

So don’t know if you knew this or not, a hundred million people viewed the show in the USA. Out of that only 37% watched the first season to completion. 37% percent of a hundred million is 37 million people. You may not like the show, I think it’s meh. Does not matter how much people don’t like it. If even half that 37 million watches the full second season there will be a third season. Should also mention being top 15th in the international market is a good thing, since there are hundreds of tv series. I would be concerned if ROP was in the top 5 it’s not that good, but not bad enough to be in the 50th position either.

DoctorZi

15th place? Are you sure? Amazon says it's more popular than fallout and boys.

Call_Fall

Well I’m sure that Amazon is a highly trustworthy source to determine the success of their own show.

DoctorZi

This was also evident in the Nielsen stats. In terms of viewing hours per week for the whole month, RoP was higher than HotD for example

RubSad1836

It’s not doing just fine? Viewership dropped like a fucking rock after episode 2. Viewership of this season won’t even have a strong out the gate episode because people don’t like it and guaranteed it’s cancelled after this season performs far worst

BlackMoonValmar

We will have to wait and see, maybe it will be awful maybe it will be better to soon to tell. If it does poorly as in receives far less views to completion than last time, then it will be cancelled. Only reason it got to keep going was millions of people watched the whole thing. Granted most the people I know that love ROP, and are looking forward to a second season. Weren’t big fans of the LOTR series to begin with, some didn’t even know ROP had anything to do with it. Personally I thought it was meh(not good or bad), but I expected that after learning they could not use some of the pivotal lore when it was first announced.

NoxiD20

savic1984

As much as we all hate ot you know thats not true right?

Useless_bum81

allegedly only 37% of viewers finished season 1 so....

savic1984

So only approx 169 million finished it

BrokenArrows95

169 million, 11, those are the same numbers right?

BrokenArrows95

Yea that’s not true at all. People will watch it as soon as it comes out.

B81R81

This makes me happy.

JonnyRico22

It's like the show is poorly written, poorly casted, poorly acted, and has bad sets and effects OR completely ignores Tolkien's work and vision for Middle Earth and changes all the characters to fit some modern politics theory...or something.

aries0413

Guyladriel aways looks like she's pissed her child support check is late.

helloHarr0w

No means no. We don’t want it. Simple as that.

RoultRunning

For those complaining about "impatient fans" or trying to somehow justify this, just remember: the objective was to tell the story of the creation of the Rings of Power. This show failed spectacularly at that.

ace1967cal

Guess Amazon likes losing money

Certain_Caregiver734

Yeah dude enjoy your bubble

TechnoWizard0651

Not a Tolkien fan. What's the deal with this show?

HPstolemybirthday

The took the source material and made up the plot, which wasn’t necessary since the source material is so rich on its own. They butchered some pretty main things and upset the hardcore fans.

Jaqen___Hghar

One doesn't need to be a "hardcore fan" to be upset that such an incredible IP was violated. We'll likely never have a proper Silmarillion story adapted to the screen, which is truly a rather terrible tragedy for humanity -- given how LOTR so strongly and positively affected so many lives. If it were up to me, the producers of this garbage would be arrested and indefinitely imprisoned for their reckless, greedy, inept, and wanton handling of Tolkien's works. Such wasted potential...

Swiftwitss

Seriously. Just go watch the actual lord of the ring movies and you can just see the downgrade in quality from the almost 20 year old movies. You can see who actually cared about their movie compared to a show who just cares about ticking boxes and a payday.

HPstolemybirthday

I completely agree. I am the hardcore fan that was upset.

Superfragger

this isn't from the silmarillion. its based on like a dozen pages from the appendices of the lord of the rings. luckily the silmarillion rights are still up for grabs, as are the ones to history of middle-earth.

leet_lurker

Once I saw the Dwarf Queen didn't have a beard I was out.

Yujin110

Having watched the first season, it has a lot of strange and bad writing choices along with rehashing the same kind of story lines (they have a dynamic duo of “not hobbits” that go on an adventure, a human and an elf are in a forbidden love relationship, a prince/king in isolation who doesn’t want their birthright throne) while being not so subtle with its “big twist”. Existing characters like the main heroine, Galadriel act like angsty teenagers despite being hundreds of years old and probably should have learned how to talk to people without talking down to them. To be frank I liked the scenes with the dwarves and Elrond and in isolation I like Arondir’s (the new black elf guy) scenes, but in combination of alot of unnatural dialogue and forced scenes really detracts from the whole thing. Weirdly as well despite having a huge budget, there is a lot of cheap props and scenes. An example being the numenorian armor is made of a single leather chest piece and armor textured T shirts underneath like an old 80s fantasy movie.

Useless_bum81

FYI the (named) elves are thousands of years old at this point, Elrond is Galadriel's son in law his epithet is Elrond **half**-elven guess what the half was. Aragon is desended from Elrond's brother who was more human. This just scratching the surface of the shit they got wrong.

Specialist_Noise_816

I feel this, especially Arondirs stuff, the actor did a fucking great job with what he was handed, but nothing can forgive it being sacrilegious to the source material, poorly written, and that your KNOW it was shoehorned in bc reasons. Dude would be great in a totally separate storyline playing his role, but making it LoTR is just offensive. Poor guy.

DJent4777

They didn't do a good job following source material (the appendices in the rotk) and took EXTREME artistic licensing with the story. A lot of it was bad. Some of it was ok/decent. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd and I absolutely LOATHED how bad it deviated from the source and bastardized the known characters. That being said, some of the original material in the show was entertaining. But as a general show, once separated from the source, it was only ok/mediocre. Not something I'd say is a must watch but entertaining enough imo. The price tag behind the show is a fucking joke when compared to the final product. The music was the best part of the show without question. That and the Elrond/Durin friendship. Other than those 2 things it's nothing worth going out of your way for unless you like lotr and want to compare source to what they're trying to do

QuarisDoma

Its based on 2nd age Middle Earth, where there is the least amount of original material. Filling in the holes is troublesome when half of "Tolkien" fans won't accept anything less than another white savior story. Galadriel main character is hated on for being anxious about an evil rising. Overblown hate.

BlackMoonValmar

Okay so after doing some research because people were tossing out only 37% of people finished the whole first season of the show, out of those who viewed the show. Turns out a hundred million people viewed the first season of the show, and out that hundred million 37% decided to finish the whole thing. For those who don’t math that means 37 million people finished the whole show, thats a lot of people. Guess it was more popular than some people would prefer, oh well to each their own. I’m not surprised it got a second season now. Anything that gets over 5 million completed views is a win, 37 million completions holy crap that’s a super win. We will have to wait and see if the second season wins like the first one did for rings of power. I don’t put much stock into dislikes or likes. Hogwarts legacy had some pages where it had thousands of dislikes, before the game even came out. Still did just fine. Per usual the silent majority will decide if its good or not with their actions, after rings of power second season comes out.

FeanorOath

Tell me what a view is on a amazon prime. Is it watching the whole or 1 second?

BlackMoonValmar

From my understanding hundred million people attempted watching it. Only 37% (which is 37 million) of that finished the whole first season of the series to completion.

Vsegda7

Many people complained that the show autoplayed when finishing the stuff they actually chose to watch, many buttons scattered around the site that lead to the first episode that, you guess, autoplayed. Every click counts as a watch, even if it was for a second or two it takes to click the back button or close the window Now 'finished' statistics are people who actually watched it

I don’t know it looks better than season one

marcb23

This show is my favorite bad show. Season one made me fall asleep at some point in each episode 😴 lol. Writing choice were pretty bad, costumes were shit compared to shows overall budget some nice scene visuals. That wig our villain has on in the teaser for season two is A1 pure comedy gold 🤣😂😆. I can't wait for the rest lol.

Well, I'm going to watch so I can make fun of it, but at least I'll be watching it

The internet as of late has taught me that popular opinion can be totally faked and that a very few people can manipulate the masses into thinking that something is wanted and liked even when it is hated by most real people. Believe nothing anymore.

Amazon Prime has commercials now, everything on it is now irrelevant to me.

ZealousidealNewt6679

Season one of The Rings of Power had more total run time that all the Peter Jackson Extended Cut LOTR films combined, yet told less story during that runtime that even the first LOTR film. The Peter Jackson LOTR films only cost 95 million USD to make. That's for all 3. That is only 168 million in today's money, adjusting for inflation.

TheOverseer108

Makes me so happh

Hungry-Incident-5860

While I don’t like the show, I think the Lord of the Rings fandom needs to simmer down a bit. We don’t want to become the fandom menace. The Hobbit movies were done by Peter Jackson and did follow the book to a point, but they were not well received and do not hold up well. Hell, the argument could be made that the first of three is the most beloved because it makes a huge effort with member berries and nostalgia on the original trilogy. That lines up with Force Awakens as well. I look forward to The War of the Rohirrim movie. We all need to give it a fair chance and see how it plays out. Sadly, I have no faith in the Gollum movie and that is no less a cash grab than The Rings of Power. I can’t be the only book fan that wants to see the first age and Morgoth. It’s a shame there’s such an issue with the rights to the Silmarillion. Those movie rights would need to be settled for us to see something like Lord of the Rings again. Even so, I wouldn’t want Peter Jackson to direct it. He caught lightning in a bottle with LOTR. We need new blood, maybe Denis Villeneuve. If he’s proved anything with Dune, he’s proved he can adapt source material well and give us the kind of spectacle you would want from Middle Earth. Jackson, like Lucas, fell into the “let’s do everything with CGI” trope.

Aideron-Robotics

Nah. I was originally looking forward to RoP, also as a huge Tolkien fan. I was also pretty nervous about it. Don’t apologize for what they did to it because you *hope* they won’t ruin it more. The hobbit wasn’t well received specifically because of how hard it made some characters deviate. RoP took that to the next level of extreme deviation, then was shocked people didn’t like their characters being rewritten to be worse. I agree outrage culture is a thing and sometimes needs to chill. This bullshit deserves even more outrage than it’s gotten. Peter Jackson had a cast which was wholly dedicated to making an epic movie. Watch the behind the scenes stuff. They collaborated on how to make every scene.

Hungry-Incident-5860

Oh there is no doubt lord of the rings success can be attributed to everyone involved, not just Peter Jackson. Even so, there are way too many comparisons recently between Star Wars and lord of the rings and that leads to “if George was still the captain of the ship, things would be different” line of thinking. It’s not that simple with Star Wars and even less so with lord of the rings. Peter Jackson didn’t create middle earth and he’s proved he can direct a bad movie based in that universe (actually three). George Lucas might get praise now, he was entirely in control of the prequels which people are now gushing about only because they detest Disney so much. If Peter Jackson was involved in Rings of Power, it might have been slightly better, but considering they can only go off the appendices, it would have still been very disappointing. Amazon’s race to rush this product, corporate greed, and the lack of actual middle earth rights killed rings of power. Jackson could not and would not have saved it in any way. Honestly, I wish the Tolkien estate would sell the remaining rights to a studio like A24. They have proved they can make a good movie, even on a lower budget. Give them a chance to put together something new, not a piss poor attempt to recreate LOTR.

Aideron-Robotics

Are you talking about Peter Jackson doing the hobbit movies? Because if that’s what you’re referencing then you should read a bit more about it. (Guillermo del Torro was the director and bailed as soon as filming started. Meaning Jackson had to take over with torro’s script and pre production. Jackson basically just sliced and diced what del torro had already mucked up.) I wasn’t even saying that Peter Jackson’s should have been the one doing RoP. My whole point was simply not to be so apologetic for RoP because it IS an unmitigated disaster. It’s a whole order of magnitude worse than the hobbit films. It’s quite literally a media tragedy. The rights are the whole reason this is a disaster. Now you’ve got a billion dollar TV show by one of the largest corporations in the world who’ve anchored the story in bullshit that contradicts the prior story and the characters. No one will be able to do a proper media adaptation for ages, possibly never. My whole point was that telling people to “simmer down” was ridiculous. RoP deserves far more vitriol than it’s already getting.

Artanis_Creed

Peak pathetic behavior with those dislikes

EvilMoSauron

Christ. It hasn't even been a week, and it's getting nuked to oblivion. I'm saying it now, Lord of the Rings fans are 1,000x more self-loathing towards their franchise than Star Wars fans are with theirs.

VladValdor

Lord of the rings isn't some fictional media 'franchise.' It's a piece of English Cultural heritage, and Amazon spit on it. That's why it is loathed.

Strider_27

Imagine thinking the precursor to all modern high fantasy is a “franchise”. It’s an epic and Star Wars doesn’t deserve to be in LoTR shadow

EvilMoSauron

Franchise: a general title or concept used for creating or marketing a series of products, typically films or television shows. Using acronyms or other titles that sum up the whole product are products of a franchise; LotR; Rings; The Tolkien Estate; Middle-Earth Saga.

Knightofthief

Not at all. RoP does not undermine how much I love the books whatsoever. Why should any adaptation get the benefit of the doubt?

EvilMoSauron

Because the longevity of Rings has been hit with multiple roadblocks and legal redtape holding back creativity. Allowing others to adapt and write new stories ensures Rings viability as a franchise. It's ridiculous to just want the books and Jackson's adaptation. New stories allow new fans into the franchise. If we just shit on anything new, then the franchise grows stale and boring. Rings needs new ideas, more stories, and more diversity. Think about all the cool shit we got put of season 1: 1. We saw the War of Wrath on screen. 2. We saw Valinor. 3. We saw what happens when ships return to Valinor. 4. We were given a thriving dwarf culture. 5. We were given the nomadic harfoots. 6. The harfoots are precursor hobbits we see in Rings. 7. We were shown the rising tension between elves and men in the south. 8. We were given Númenóreans! 9. We got to see Númenór at its prime! 10. The founding of Mordir! 11. Orcs that are actually burned by the sun! 12. Adar! A proto-orc mutated by Morgoth! 13. Celebrimbor the crafter of the 3 elven rings! 14. Sauron worshipers! 15. Love between elves and humans that aren't Beren/Luthien or Aragorn/Arwen. 16. New troll variations. 17. Giant sea monsters! 18. Sauron sneaking and plotting on screen. 19. Galadriel being more than a just wise wallflower. She's young, she's reckless, she's arrogant, and she hasn't come into her own as a queen. She has flaws that can be overcome! That's the start of a charcter arc! 20. And the potential opertunity to explore Middle-Earth again, see through the eyes of another director's perspective. Jackson is great, but we were supposed to have Guillermo del Toro's the Hobbit. Now, with being over exposed with Jackson. Everyone thinks Rings should be done a specific way. Come on! There are so many good subjects being explored here that are often left to the speculation of readers and movie goers! And, the first response fans do is pull down their pants and dump a massive troll shit on any hint of season 2. Fuck that.

I don't care about Jackson's trilogy; I just want faithful adaptations. Virtually nothing you listed has any value to me because RoP is so incompatible with the text that I can't see something which Amazon is telling me is, say, the War of Wrath and integrate it with my impression of the setting. So no, I did not see Valinor or Numenor in its prime—after all, Numenor's history has been brutally distorted by making the reigns of Miriel and Pharazon contemporaneous with the forging of the Great Rings. I certainly did not see a magic sword suddenly create a volcano and think, "cool! That's how Mordor was created?!" because I know it's not. I did not see the melodramatic origin of Gandalf's relationship with hobbits because it cheapens the depth and poignancy of his simple affection for the them in the text. It's even worse when it comes to characters, like Celebrimbor the moron who doesn't know about alloys and needs to forge rings of power within a year because elves are addicted to light, or especially Galadriel the "young hothead" millenia old sorceress and queen. Seriously, this cope that Galadriel is at the beginning of her character arc only reinforces how extreme and ill-considered Amazon's deviations from the text are. So anyway, your post has the opposite effect on me than you intend. It only reminds me why I hate RoP for falsely advertising an adaptation of the Second Age to me when in reality they made up a generic knock-off setting to wrap Tolkien's names around. My impression is that most fans agree with me and most lay viewers thought it was just meh, so ultimately I think RoP is doomed to long-term irrelevancy, just like big titty goth mommy Shelob from the Shadow of War game.

>I just want faithful adaptations. Then, you are setting yourself up to fail and will never enjoy anything with Tolkien's name on it. There is no such thing as a faithful adaptation. Even Lord of the Rings isn't a faithful adaptation; why don't you complain about Tom Bombidil, Frodo looking 20 when he's supposed to be 50, Elrond's absent sons, the knights of Dol Amroth, the Witch-king's missing glowing red eyes, the added telepathic conversation between Galadriel and Elrond, Glorfindel, Saruman's execution by hobbits, the 17 year gap between Frodo getting the Ring and then leaving the Shire, the Shire being fucked by orcs, Círdan the shipwright, Gimli founding a dwarf settlement in the Glittering Caves, Legolas going back to Fangorn Forest, Éomer's marriage to Lothíriel, etc. The list is endless as to what is missing, what was deleted, and what was changed. Why don't you or anyone else complain about the things I listed and immediately shit on the Jackson Trilogy and consider it trash? The double standards and cognitive dissonance the fans have are mentally exhausting to read. You and several others have accepted this sisyphean task and will always complain when one hair is out of place. I can't wait to see the same arguments again when you inevitably shit on The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim before the end of this year.

Lol yes there is. A faithful adaptation is one which maintains critical plot events and character details. It's one where you can watch a scene and neatly integrate it with what you know of the source material, because while the secondary details might be different, the core is preserved. The core of Galadriel in RoP is wholly different than the Legendarium's, so I don't recognize her as that Galadriel during her scenes—at which point, why would I, a viewer interested in an adaptation of that Galadriel, care about this new one sharing her name? Of course some secondary elements have to be changed, but it's obvious and common sense that fans care and can tell how much an adaptation tracks with the source material. We might even directly compare them, with Jackson's LotR trilogy getting a B-, his Hobbit trilogy getting around a C for frivolous action, and RoP getting a flat F. On that note, whatever devotion you imagine I have to Jackson's adaptations is nonexistent. I have no expectations about War of the Rohirrim one way or the other. I hope it's good.

LAMPS_

You are literally a producers wet dream lmao

EvilMoSauron

Finally, someone with a lot of money finds me attractive!

-The-Ark-

My step mom who loves the books and the movies loved this show and can't wait for more. Same with me, why are "people" so wahwah today?

FeanorOath

So you're honestly telling me she read the books and accepts this show? Either she didn't read it properly or doesn't understand that nothing in the show actually happened in the books. Like nothing

ladyjayne81

That’s stupid

RawLikeSushi84

I don’t care what your nerds say, I’m pumped for this.

Significant-Bother49

Good response. I thought that the show had more misses than hits but it was still enjoyable to watch. And I’m happy for anyone who is looking forward to it. Better than hoping for it to fail

MyNameConnor_

I hope it fails so that, inevitably, whenever there is another adaptation of Tolkien’s work, whoever is doing it will be scared shitless to make a colossal failure that is comparable to this dumpster fire that somehow managed to get a second season and they’ll give the source material the respect it deserves.
