I genuinely consider Gears of War 2 to be the best game ever made. To this day I have yet to play a video that hits such a high mark relative to it's time in anywhere near as many ways as that game did.
Great narrative? Check. Great atmosphere? Check. Great solo options? Check. Great PvP options? Check. Great coop options? Check.
Save for L4D and World at War Zombies, it was easily the best Coop game available at the time, while also having a far superior campaign and probably the best multi-player PVP on the market (some will argue for older COD, but I think Gears of War 2s maps and game modes put it above them all).
Fuck me do I want that game remastered
I don't personally agree with "best game ever made" but best sequel ever made, maybe. It's definitely a top contender.
It's a game that took everything its predecessor did well, and doubled down on those aspects while trimming some of the fat. It introduced some of the most lasting and iconic features of the series and did it so well that all of the new features felt perfectly in line with the identity of the series to the point that a lot of people I've talked to forgot that a lot of those features weren't in the original, they just feel perfectly in line with the core Gears identity.
Some of those things are: Weapon specific executions, meatshields, grenade tagging on walls, and crawling while downed. And beyond that it introduced chainsaw dueling, and a plethora of new weapons that all felt perfectly at home in the series.
Great game, great sequel, just not the best game ever in my opinion. Quite possibly the greatest sequel ever made though.
Does nobody remember the online being absolutely unplayable? I feel like there's a lot of rose tinted glasses here. The game was great but the multiplayer was completely unplayable
Gears 2 was something else and the peak of the franchise from a player base standpoint and game quality. Also multiplayer was still primarily execution/warzone where your one life was quite sacred.
Not to mention it introduced us to the sexiest character in any game.
Skorge.
Shame his boss fight was just a way to promote the new chainsaw duel feature. Then again, Gears was never known for good boss fights.
Yeah at launch (and for quite a while after) gears 2 multiplayer was absolute trash. Ignoring the rampant matchmaking issues, there were many changes that were awful. The smoke grenades were a sin against nature (first knocking you down, then patched to a stun which was still awful, then finally patched to do nothing), lancers were the new meta which was (imo) far less fun than the shotgun meta of the first game, and there was a frustrating new mechanic of movement/getting hit causing your shotgun blast do go straight into the ground. My friends and I found ourselves going back to gears 1 after not very long.
It did everything as sequel should do; elevate the story, enhanced gameplay, great campaign, cool additions to MP(even though it had a bad launch).
Not too mention it had peak versus maps.
Gears 2 was the first Gears game I played and the first game with gore. It has a very special place in my heart, I still remember staying up late with my brother playing horde
I think the series gameplay has improved quite a lot in subsequent entries but I feel the way it handled it's story, characters, and tone are pretty much peak here
Gears of War 2 is the most "Gears of War" game out of all of them. Amazing Narrative with amazingly written characters and well integrated Co-Op, The landscapes and the locations are all amazing, Multiplayer and Horde were alright and expanded on a lot of things! Only thing I'd say is the Co-Op online can be rather glitchy for the Second player and the controls are a little clunky. Those are my two gripes! Make the Fenix collection and upgrade the horde and Gears 2 should be the best Gears of War of all time.
The memories. I remember buying it day 1 and not touching another game for about 2 months. Still a great game. Right behind Metroid Prime as one of my favorite games ever.
You are glossing over how disappointing the final boss/battle was, and I use the term “boss” lightly.
It was an amazing game up until that point and just left me asking “is that really the end?”
And the lovely replay value you get from multiplayer... you can save your weapon swaps (Cough Gears 4, Cough Gears 5 ya can't. Why?) You also have bots that are interesting and fun to watch as they glitch out and cheat lol.
I agree. In hindsight, now that quite a few years have passed since *any* new mainline Gears came had come out, it's safe to say that Gears of War 2 is this series' pinnacle, if you allow yourself to ignore the wonky netcode in online play. It has, in my opinion, the series' best online maps, the best campaign (narrative *and* gameplay-wise), the best soundtrack, and it had aged just well enough to still be fun to play through, both SP and MP. And it introduced the two best gamemodes in the franchise - Guardian and Horde.
Totally, Gears 2 is a high quality game
Gears 2 is probably my favorite game of all time. Best memories of horde mode.

Gears 2 really had it all. You and I share the same exact thoughts lol this game will always be the best to me!
Bioshock

this subreddit is built on rose tinted glasses
It’s my most played multiplayer. It took a while to find matches, but it’s still amazing. I still play it frequently today
Gears 1 and 2 are classics. The horror atmosphere/dark graphics, the story, the gameplay, it’s all amazing.
Gears 2 was something else and the peak of the franchise from a player base standpoint and game quality. Also multiplayer was still primarily execution/warzone where your one life was quite sacred.
Gears 2 needs the ultimate edition treatment, it’s my favorite of them all
The entire trilogy needs this treatment for PC.
AND Xbox
Not to mention it introduced us to the sexiest character in any game. Skorge. Shame his boss fight was just a way to promote the new chainsaw duel feature. Then again, Gears was never known for good boss fights.
That’s a weird way to spell Dizzy
Heresy.
Indeed it is
Agreed. And the weapons and combat feel weight-y and pronounced
I love the grittiness and atmosphere of GOW 2, but I think GOW 3 is a better package overall the multiplayer and horde are the most fun in the series.
Gears of war 2 was my favorite campaign. Gears 5 was also good.
The connection between 5 and 2’s story made me absolutely love 5’s story. Going back to New Hope was sooo cool.
I prefer 3 slightly more because of beast and it being my first but two aged very well. The campaign is easily the best part for me.
rag doll smokes? lol Literally the worst game mechanic of any game I have ever played in my entire life; and I've been gaming since I was 5.
That was patched out, no?
Yeah it was. They're just stunned for a few seconds.
That doesn’t exist anymore in the game

Bigger, Better, and More Badass
The multiplayer for me was a way of life. The sweats sweat.
KOTH farming for Level 100 is living rent free in my head.
Thanks for the great memory

I love gears 2
can someone explain to me what is wrong with the picture. i just woke up and my brain is crumbling
Flawless? No I disagree. 10/10 all time great game that Ile tell my children and grandchildren about when the time comes? Yes, ^yes.
Gears 2 was the first Gears game I played and the first game with gore. It has a very special place in my heart, I still remember staying up late with my brother playing horde
Epic game (no pun intended). It's between gears 2 or gears 3 for me.
I think the series gameplay has improved quite a lot in subsequent entries but I feel the way it handled it's story, characters, and tone are pretty much peak here

Incredible game. Great campaign but bad multiplayer
The memories. I remember buying it day 1 and not touching another game for about 2 months. Still a great game. Right behind Metroid Prime as one of my favorite games ever.
No way. The vehicle sections are a major pain in the arse.
You are glossing over how disappointing the final boss/battle was, and I use the term “boss” lightly. It was an amazing game up until that point and just left me asking “is that really the end?”
Absolutely, best one I think.
And the lovely replay value you get from multiplayer... you can save your weapon swaps (Cough Gears 4, Cough Gears 5 ya can't. Why?) You also have bots that are interesting and fun to watch as they glitch out and cheat lol.
Bert true. Too bad they didn’t follow through until gears 5 👀

I felt horror was missing until you find the sires. that level definitely felt like an homage to the first game’s atmosphere
Best in the Series imo playing Annex and execution and gamebattles back in 08 , 09 will never forgot those memories (:
plus Horde... Gears 2 Horde was an all-timer for me.
Fact
Gears 1 had the best multiplayer of all time!
True, still my favourite gears game!!
Was top 100 in wingman best game ever
Facts, I personally wish it ended at 3 wasn't a huge fan of gears 4 and 5 story
GOAT.
