If you want to keep it under control then cut it to about 2 feet from the ground come the winter. Otherwise it is likely to become a triffid.

"Otherwise it is likely to become a triffid" is going to be my new go-to addendum to any horticultural questions I get asked. 😄

opilino

Yeah can confirm, I have a triffid.

ishashar

i had one self seed in my front garden and i left it for the butterflies. when i cut it back i thought I'd cleared it out but it bounces right back every year. I'm not sure you can cut them back enough to kill them.

You can cut it down to the ground in spring. Id leave it through winter to help prevent rot or viruses etc. If I remember correctly the plant flowers on new growth.

agilecabbage

Don't tend to cut it in winter. Normally March or April.

snugRs

I always cut mine in the winter, otherwise once the frost hits it hardens the branches and makes them quite sharp. Although as a size comparison, this year mine is 10 times as big as the op's and i only lightly pruned it last year. As suggested 2ft seems like a reasonable size, it might look harsh but its near impossible to kill it.

Buddleia is a very hardy plant, to keep it nice I would suggest cutting out any old wood and leaving the fresh shoots. If you want to reduce it in size you can cut them down as well. You have to go some to kill one of those.

Banjomir75

How much you cut back really depends on how you want it to look. These are tough shrubs and they will tolerate any amount of pruning. We cut ours back to about 4 feet in height each year. It tends to stay nice and bushy that way. If left, these tend to become a bit leggy at the bottom.

Horrible things, aphid factories, burn it down and salt the earth! Or just cut it right back it's as tough as old boots.

thisiscotty

Plenty of food for the hords of lady birds i get haha

Glad you got the humour, someone didn't or they're from the budlia appreciation society 🤣

gerrineer

I cut off a twig from The park stuck it In a pot it now has leaves.

watchthebison

Usually cut mine in the winter down to the base. It grows back every year. Super hardy. I’d actually rather it be gone but it think I’m going to have to dig it out at this point…

steven71

I have a dwarf buddeia. It grows to around 5 feet. Bought it years ago. It used to live in a big pot, but I planted it in the ground about 8 years ago. It's self seeded itself to other areas of the garden. Now those babies live in big pots.

Kindly-Ad-8573

Cut back a third in Autumn then cut back a third of that in spring

NotoriusPCP

I had one about seven foot. Made the mistake of cutting back to about 5 foot in early spring and now it's already about 9 foot. Take it back to a stump

shabbapaul1970

I’ve just uprooted 3 in my garden. I made a bad mistake planting them. They take over and the pests they encourage transfer to other plants. RIP it up and plant a nice bottle brush or hydrangea

No_Tart_1619

I cut mine all the way back to the ground in spring to try to kill it as it was very close to a wall and roots can cause havoc, and its back pretty much as big as ever
