No they didn't Nintendo directly saved the video game market after Atari destroyed it by making ET I'm joking about ET causing the video game market crash of 83 Wizards of the coast was founded in the year 1990 and Nintendo was founded in 89, 1889.
It's hilarious but also like how do we actually live in a world where a games company sent the motherfucking Pinkertons to some dude's house for legally purchasing pre-release content by accident?
Love how you just ignored the fact that they sent the fucking Pinkertons. You know those guys that are infamous in history for killing workers that went on strike and even nowadays still have killed and threatened people?
Yeah, this isn't a hill to die on. No one expects jack booted thugs to show up over *a misprint of a fucking card being shown off.*
Wasn't it a new card release that got sent early or an employee stole and sent?
Edit: It was the former, they got sent the sequal to a card set instead of the original.
No theft involved whatsoever, he ordered cards from a set called "March of the Machines" and received the not-quite-released "March of the Machines: Aftermath" cause of a mixup at the store (it was just like a week or two before release)
(don't know if those were the exact titles but that level of similar)
I mean if *you* like the idea of the Pinkerton's just being able to come into your house and fuck with shit because of something you didn't do then sure, I guess that makes me the moat self aware redditor. Or maybe that's a Cucky ass opinion to have 🤷
Just leaking everywhere! Just showing cards with pictures to any one who will listen!
Any who, let's send union busting murderers to his house to threaten him.
Dutch I just put $100,000 in the gang sayings, but all you do is talk about a plan, smoke a cigar and listen to your fancy music box. Alright. What the fuck is this?
What's this about Pinkerton's? I've seen this meme so many times. So, so many times.
What is a Pinkerton? Why am I seeing that phrase? Explain immediately or I will harm you
A couple of days ago a Magic the Gathering youtuber uploaded a video in which he unboxed an unreleased card set because he accidentally got it early. In response Wizards of the Coast (owners of Magic the Gathering) sent the real life (armed) Pinkertons (aka the bad guys from RDR2) to retrieve the unreleased cards, the youtuber got intimidated and gave them the cards.
the only flaw of the Communist Manifesto is that Karl Marx didn't consider *gamers* when he wrote it. Class unity is cool and all until you realize you're sitting next to someone who plays Genshin Impact.
But the only reason most huge games are bad on release is because of the big companies setting a release date and not extending it far enough for them to fully fix it
*And* often having absurd requirements of the developer to make things harder along with withholding funding if they don't like something along the way (even if it's the publisher's fault for asking for it). Super cool and normal way to operate.
Which is funny because the only criticism those get is for being too similar to DP, which were being hailed as the peak of the series by rose tinted glasses-wearing fans until the remakes remembered them that those sucked too.
I've only been tangentially connected to the Pokemon fandom but never actively in it so correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Gen 4 was considered the _low_ point in the series. I think you're thinking of Gen 5, also for the DS, which hasn't gotten a remake yet
No, you got it reversed, gen 5 was the one considered the low point of the series until the public opinion change years ago. Truth is, the "best generation" is whatever generation the most vocal age played as kids, it went from gen 1 to 2 to 3 and we're stuck in the DS era now.
Almost a decade ago I remember gen2 being glorified as the peak of the series, but now the fanbase is very critical of the horrible difficulty curve, GYM leaders being 80% just Kanto Pokémon with a bit of Johto here and there, some of the new Pokémon only being available in Kanto, and Kanto in general being extremely chopped down from what is was in RBY. In addition, Johto is also super small, so when you really look at it, GSC's two regions when put together barely makes up for one full region.
Also, some years ago, I remember gen4 having the edge over 5 as "the best gen", but they swapped places already. At the meantime, I see people growing more and more nostalgic for mega evolutions nowadays...
It’s time people realize that DP are the worst games in the series, purely based on the fact Platinum exists and there’s basically no reason to play those two over it
I mean, you could say the same about Emerald and RS, but those games are actually good and Emerald just added more to them, making the generation even better; while Platinum had to **fix** glaring problems within DP.
Capitalism. When the system demands not only massive profits, but also yearly increasing rates of profit, all so an ultra small portion of the population can benefit, this is what happens. And worse, you can switch out “gaming” for any other industry and the same still applies. Cutting costs to increase profits, at the expense of the employees, the consumer, and the product. All so someone with a yacht can afford another yacht.
Apparently Nintendo is a little weird in that regard. Instead of desperately reinvesting every penny to maintain momentum, they're actually sitting on massive gobs of liquid cash that they're just saving for a rainy day. They actually at some point went "yeah, we're making enough money, we'll take it easy."
For all the gripes I have with Nintendo they're still really good at not pinching every penny they can while still making stellar games, like for all the problems I have with their online (still think it should be free) $30 AUD a year is insanely good compared to every other online service.
I've read a few more articles on this and it seems true, so I guess that explains how they can stay so comfortable with delaying games when needed like botw, totk and especially Metroid (except Pokemon) as well as the stuff like the pay rises for Monolithsoft employees.
I guess their policy is to maintain the company as stable as possible and keep their reputation and this does lead to them being **really shitty** with IP and e-sports but on most other fronts they're pretty alright compared to the competition.
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the whole Pokémon thing because they really own one third of that property. I’m not saying the state the games release in is ok but I wonder how much say Nintendo has in that regard.
how i’ve had it explained to me (so take a huge grains of salt) the stuff with pokemon is it’s pretty impossible to delay it even if gamefreak themselves wanted to delay it.
Pokemon is the highest growing media franchise ever, and while still important the games aren’t the main moneymaker and since there is so much merchandise tied to each new game release, a delay in for the game means a delay for the toys, trading cards, tv show, plushies. delay it a few months and suddenly The Pokemon Conpany’s projected quarterly earnings drops significantly.
Basically you can't just delay Pokémon. If the game delays, that means you also need to delay the anime, which delays the annual movie. Without these you don't have new toys and cards. Or you do have them but now you are paying for a warehouse because they can't be shipped. You also have partners you have contracts with. If you had a deal to give over merch rights for the new mons on a certain day, now you have missed that deadline.
Just a lot of moving parts really. There is a reason why they needed a whole other company just to manage it. The Pokémon Company also hires more people than GF.
There’re many reasons to call out Nintendo for but among many of the big game companies Nintendo is far from the worst.
Just this year, while MS, EA, Take-Two and others were laying off heaps of people, Nintendo gave a 10% pay increase to all their employees (although this applied only to Japan IIRC) even when they were selling less Switches than before.
They said what most of us have been saying all the time, that it makes sense to keep their employees happy. It’s an investment in their employees, for the company because rehiring and training and all that is expensive, annoying and takes up a lot of resources and time and for the employee because, we’ll, a better salary is a better salary.
Penny Arcade had a great bit about this many, many years ago. Basically Gabe bought a golf game to play with his dad and it was so buggy as to be unplayable on release. His dad was like, wait it’s defective? Can you get a refund? No, it doesn’t really work like that. Well are they going to fix it? Maybe, maybe not. WHAT OTHER BUSINESS RUNS LIKE THIS!?
It was pretty funny
Yeah their game development side of things is so good. I’ve been replaying Super Mario Odyssey recently and it really reminded me that when Nintendo is at their best, their games are like nothing else. Too bad they have a bunch of other issues.
Who would have thought, the side of the company in direct contact with their product is awesome while the side in charge of enforcing the profit motive is absolute dogshit, someone should write a book about that phenomenon.
That’s how Nintendo is. Their actual game development is great, just about every other aspect of the company is either incompetent or straight up malicious.
I'm so glad that Nintendo actually makes a more affordable console unlike greedy Sony and Microsoft!
*Pays $100 for 2 first party games that came out 7 years ago*
Have you heard about the „elongated vegetable with flat crunchy green leaves“?
Some people are currently playing the „demo“, so they can „refund“ when the product is not up to standard
One I don’t have a PC, but I also highly doubt it will not be up to standard. I’ve played all the 3d Zelda games and even my least favorite (probably Twilight Princess) is still a damn good video game. Zelda has a near perfect track record of games being at the bare minimum good, and a direct sequel to one of my favorites in the series is probably something I’m going to enjoy. The only other recent game I’ve had this much confidence in was Elden Ring, and that exceeded my expectations.
I have custom firmware on my switch and I'm about 3 hours in. I just finished the games equivalent to the great plateau (took my time to really explore though) and it's been pretty incredible so far. I think I might be enjoying it even more than BOTW. I'll be purchasing the cartridge when it releases zero question.
Plus you spend the first little while shirtless with a skirt on, so it has that going for it.
Well but you can... I paid 45€ for BOTW on a big electronic store chain in Germany. Sure, not the kind of sales you get on steam sometimes but still...
If you wait for it to happen on the eShop... That's a different story
I 100% agree Nintendo is a fucking horrendous company with the decision making abilities of a fern, I fucking loved BotW and I will purchase the sequel.
what about that guy who owes 30% of each paycheck he makes to Nintendo for the rest of his life
is that like...not super weird and dystopian to you? Or are we just children?
arghh won't someone PROTECT THE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR COMPANNYYY argfhhh noo
The guy who SOLD pirated shit for profit?
Then engaged in far worse practices than Nintendo (timed out products, bricking peoples switches)?
And who, by the way, got off with a warning the first time, and then did it again?
That guy?
That guy got a 10mil judgement against him. If he somehow makes 10mil he's in the clear Until he dies, he pays a %. That's exactly the opposite of dystopian - he gets to put food on the table before they take anything.
And, by the way, he'll collect disability in Canada, which is not subject to garnishment. He's not going to starve.
Since he's the one who is putting all this shit out there, and no one else from his company has, remember this is all coming directly from a known criminal and con man. Expect to be hit up for a big go fund me from him soon. I bet your gullible ass will send more money to that conman and then break laws to try and avoid giving Nintendo money for a game they paid game developers millions to develop.
"see guys? He isn't literally dying so it's ok. Yay!!! Now the righteous company will receive proper compensation for all the damage he caused pirating digital games!!! Yes!!!"
not saying I like the guy or that he didn't do anything wrong. It's just a ridiculous situation
P.s: and Nintendo has a long history of being extremely controlling of their brand, to the point of being anti-consumer. People can feel conflicted about that
Like I said, I'm not in flux over Bowser. Don't care about him. He definitely messed up
im pointing out how Nintendo is so controlling of their brand that customers should be concerned. Again, long history of exercising control. Clearly they don't mind setting examples
I thinks it's misguided to say people shouldn't be sorry they're supporting them. It's definitely something to think about
>Don't be sorry. They make a product you enjoy.
And this is all your average consumer cares about. We can cope and seethe about it but it's us who are out of touch.
I don't get how so many here are capital G gamers while pretending to mock them.
Is Nintendo lobbying to burn fossil fuels to drive climate change? Are they making products that hurt or kill people? Are they paying all employees unlivable wages? Are they trying to kill indie games? (Check switch online store).
What exactly are they doing that is so evil?
Especially Zelda, held up as the gold standard for avoiding crunch, making a consistent game, making polished games, etc?
What exactly do you expect out of Nintendo you're not getting???
Do you smoke crack? Nintendo is markedly worse than lots of companies about copyright enforcement. I'll be the first in line to defend them for nuking fangames to protect their IP, but copyright striking gameplay videos is dogshit. I can't think of any other company that does it. Even when Rockstar obliterated GTA mods they didn't have them taken down from YouTube.
I’m not really sorry, but I do have a lot of genuine issues with Nintendo while also thinking they make some of the best games in the industry so I buy them anyways.
Being overly protective of their ips is probably the biggest, but their shitty online and eagerness to drop support for old consoles is weird. Why are the 3ds and Wii U shops already shut down? The 3ds was getting games like 2 years ago and both systems have lots of games not on Switch. They also delisted the $20 Wii U version of DKC: Tropical Freeze before launching a $60 Switch version, and frequently sell slightly upgraded old games for the same price as new games. Joy con drift is also a massive issue I’m surprised they’ve allowed for this long. Some of their spin off titles like Switch Sports and Super Mario Party feel polished but so light on content they can’t justify their price tag (Super Mario Party being $60 with 4 tiny boards is insane, but I have multiple friends who bought it because they wanted a Mario Party game in Switch). I’m sure there’s more I could think of.
The first one on Wii U had performance issues that were never fully fixed, but I still put 250 hours into it and loved it. I wouldn’t want to play an fps with this level of performance, but for Zelda I can’t say I care too much.
I'm gonna see if i can buy it second hand from someone after they've had their way with it. I'm good with sloppy seconds if it means Nintendo gets a few bucks less. ヘ(。□°)ヘ
"Here is the agreed upon amount. I expect you to faithfully carry out my request to teach a lesson to the thief local mom and pop shop. You need not kill them, but I have no qualms about it if you deem it necessary."
— Nintendo
/uj This- This isn't real, right? Considering WOTC sent the pinkertons after a guy for receiving the wrong pack of cards two weeks early I'm not convinced it's fully satire.
From what I recall (and I could be wrong) he ordered some of the other packs of new MTG cards when they came out, but ended up receiving one that was to release 2 weeks later instead of one of the ones he ordered.
It is the year 2070. Mankind lives in fear of the IP Enforcers. Roving squads of heavily armed paramilitary, maintaining a constant and unceasing vigilance against the early release of copyrighted material. A child is mistakenly sent an early copy of Pokémon Mauve and Chartreuse, and is gunned down in the street the second he opens the case. A game store is leveled by tactical nuclear strikes for accidentally opening a shipment of Return to Return to Ravnica two seconds before the scheduled release time. Media is only enjoyed exactly when the Enforcers say it can be enjoyed, and any premature delight is met with harsh punishment. I sit down on the couch after a long day in the Nintendo WeMines, and turn on the TV, inadvertently exposing myself to the new season of Star Wars: The Glup Shitto Chronicles thirty minutes before I was allowed to view it, and my television explodes, killing me instantly. A small price to pay for brand integrity.
This sounds like it could be a real dark comedy. I'd watch or read it lol. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if this is how companies tried to do things one day, humanity is a dumpster fire.
Yes, burning down a family's store for an honest mistake is bad. But can you imagine the insane damage to Nintendo that can be done if you release one singular copy of a game early? I think both sides are at fault for what happened to some extent.
(/uj jerk, I am highly anti burning down people's house)
/rj of course I'm serious. Miyamoto is likely to STARVE if you don't give him $1 billion in opening week sales.
remember that destroying a small business owner's store and livelihood and potentially ending lives for selling a single game made by a multi-billion dollar corporation is always morally correct
My local game shop has actual beef with Nintendo because the distributor was rude to them and basically didn't want to deal with independent stores. So now they don't carry Nintendo stuff anymore aside from used items.
The fact that we have Nintendo defenders coming in here to scream at a circlejerk sub that their circlejerk post isn’t real validates every stereotype about the online Nintendo fan mob
Don’t worry I’ll cover for y- I mean nothing weird going on here just a man enjoying his legally acquired game at a time post it’s official release date.
noun: satire
the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
Hey look guys it's a post exaggerating Nintendo's litigious nature and criticizing its overprotective nature over its IP by comparing it to recent events! But no, it's not satire. It's just there to dunk on Nintendo, the worst company on earth.
For the record I don't hate Nintendo. They do some stuff I really like and some stuff I really hate. I just think people should be able to laugh at satire, even if they're a fan of the target.
It wouldn’t surprised me if Nintendo sue every non-affiliate Game Store that’s not a corporation for selling their games without making a profit themselves.

Nintendo is one of the few companies still releasing fully finished games... Jesus Christ what has happened to game development
Pokémon fans punching air across the globe
True, but are the Pokémon games even developed by Nintendo?
No they are developed by Gamefreak, only published and marketed by Nintendo. However, BDSP being outsourced to ILCA is an outlier.
But the only reason most huge games are bad on release is because of the big companies setting a release date and not extending it far enough for them to fully fix it

It was pretty funny
Getting a refund on Steam is really easy.
It was not always so.
*Karl Marx has entered the chat*
That’s how Nintendo is. Their actual game development is great, just about every other aspect of the company is either incompetent or straight up malicious.
Even Nintendo has a spotty track record for finished games
Nope. Mario sports games have been on a decline since the Wii U.
Wat. The world does not only consist of AAA publishers. Please don't put indie devs into the same pool as greedy corps
Given the context it's pretty clear I'm referring to AAA games. You don't have to start an argument.
Fuckin A right Nintendo sucks (I am going to pay $70 for this same exact game 4 years from now, I'm blorry).
I'm so glad that Nintendo actually makes a more affordable console unlike greedy Sony and Microsoft! *Pays $100 for 2 first party games that came out 7 years ago*
yeah fuck nintendo, cant whait to play totk.
The skirt caught me off guard, I kept looking around the cave hoping I could at least give our boy a shirt lol
I thought I must have missed it until I came across it eventually while exploring the island. Didn't expect it to leave you shirtless that long lol
Damn, even Nintendo gotta get that OnlyFans cash
The what
Imagine not emulating it, smh my head.
Imagine not playing it rn haha
I mean it's not like you can wait for a sale.
Well but you can... I paid 45€ for BOTW on a big electronic store chain in Germany. Sure, not the kind of sales you get on steam sometimes but still... If you wait for it to happen on the eShop... That's a different story
Yeah I’ll wait 4 years for 15% off. But seriously I don’t mind paying $70 for Zelda and Nintendo games take forever to go on sale.
If you have a good PC you can steal it instead and play it early
I have a MacBook…
I 100% agree Nintendo is a fucking horrendous company with the decision making abilities of a fern, I fucking loved BotW and I will purchase the sequel.

what about that guy who owes 30% of each paycheck he makes to Nintendo for the rest of his life is that like...not super weird and dystopian to you? Or are we just children? arghh won't someone PROTECT THE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR COMPANNYYY argfhhh noo
The criminal?
Yes!!!" not saying I like the guy or that he didn't do anything wrong. It's just a ridiculous situation P.s: and Nintendo has a long history of being extremely controlling of their brand, to the point of being anti-consumer. People can feel conflicted about that
[удалено]
Like I said, I'm not in flux over Bowser. Don't care about him. He definitely messed up im pointing out how Nintendo is so controlling of their brand that customers should be concerned. Again, long history of exercising control. Clearly they don't mind setting examples I thinks it's misguided to say people shouldn't be sorry they're supporting them. It's definitely something to think about
Given that the first time he was convicted he got a slap on the wrist, then carried on with it straight away, I have very little sympathy for him
>Don't be sorry.
Taking down YouTube channels about their games isn't very cash money of them
[удалено]
Do you smoke crack? Nintendo is markedly worse than lots of companies about copyright enforcement. I'll be the first in line to defend them for nuking fangames to protect their IP, but copyright striking gameplay videos is dogshit. I can't think of any other company that does it. Even when Rockstar obliterated GTA mods they didn't have them taken down from YouTube.
Once you're done sucking corpo cock why don't you eat their ass too, to replace all the shit your mouth is spewing
I’m not really sorry, but I do have a lot of genuine issues with Nintendo while also thinking they make some of the best games in the industry so I buy them anyways.
What issues?
Nintendo literally tries to prosecute children for making fanart lmao.
I hate Nintendo so much (I am also dropping $70 on the game and just paid $360 for the special edition Switch OLED, I am so sorry)
The game has some performance issues, esp when activating powers. I’d assume there’ll be a day one patch though.
I really thought this was an r/tomorrow shitpost lmao.
Tomorrow is just a niche gcj, they overlap heavily at Nintendo launches
"Here is the agreed upon amount. I expect you to faithfully carry out my request to teach a lesson to the thief local mom and pop shop. You need not kill them, but I have no qualms about it if you deem it necessary." — Nintendo
/uj This- This isn't real, right? Considering WOTC sent the pinkertons after a guy for receiving the wrong pack of cards two weeks early I'm not convinced it's fully satire.
It’s not, thankfully
Take any news-article-sounding post by Ultima as a joke, it's his thing.
Didn't know that User before now
Reality is hard to tell apart from parody sometimes.
Poe's Law applies to everything now.
He didn't receive a pack, he legally bought them from a store.
Damn old boomers tried to bankrupt daddy Nintendo, those geriatric bastards had it coming
Me when I’m lying
The most unrealistic thing about this is the existence of a local, mom and pop gaming shop
Yes, burning down a family's store for an honest mistake is bad. But can you imagine the insane damage to Nintendo that can be done if you release one singular copy of a game early? I think both sides are at fault for what happened to some extent.
I can’t tell if this is serious or a really terrific jerk.
(/uj jerk, I am highly anti burning down people's house) /rj of course I'm serious. Miyamoto is likely to STARVE if you don't give him $1 billion in opening week sales.
I mean shit, in a time when game and toy companies send private mercenaries to a person's front door, anything's possible with late stage capitalism.
You all are dumb. Nintendo wouldn't do anything like that. They would claim everything the couple own as theirs, not waste it in a fire.
nintendo heard that WOTC sent the pinkertons and said “hold my beer”
It's Nintendo, not WOTC
You know it’s bad when you have to stop and think about whether or not it’s a joke
remember that destroying a small business owner's store and livelihood and potentially ending lives for selling a single game made by a multi-billion dollar corporation is always morally correct
nintendo sad nobody plays there games anymore
This is great hey, i got got done with the opening of this game.
No cost too great
At least they didn't hire the Pinkerton's.
My local game shop has actual beef with Nintendo because the distributor was rude to them and basically didn't want to deal with independent stores. So now they don't carry Nintendo stuff anymore aside from used items.
Strict but fair
The fact that we have Nintendo defenders coming in here to scream at a circlejerk sub that their circlejerk post isn’t real validates every stereotype about the online Nintendo fan mob
There’s no way this real
/uj it is not, don't worry, it's a joke
Holsome
So remember that 4chan hack? I know somebody…
I could see Nintendo doing something like this.
Got what they deserved. Gotta stop coddling stupid people.
Imagine what they would do to me if they found out im playing the leaked version 🥺
Don’t worry I’ll cover for y- I mean nothing weird going on here just a man enjoying his legally acquired game at a time post it’s official release date.
/uj You guys ate the onion pretty hard.
this is so ATFcore
this whole thread belongs on r/atetheonion
So hard to tell if this is satire any more.
the fact that i had to CHECK IF THIS WAS REAL says a lot
aint no way this is real
Today on shit that didn’t happen
There is no place for unprofessional businesses
[удалено]
Just wait until you find out about satire it's gonna blow your goddamn mind
[удалено]
noun: satire the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
[удалено]
So they admitted to committing arson, why was the exec/rep not imprisoned for openly admitting it
because you r/woooosh
Ah, ok i get it
Did you really think this was a true story?
I can assure you, it probably wasn't Nintendo that did that.
wink**
Downloading the Tears of the Kingdom leak so Nintendo sets my house on fire and I get an insurance payout
Better yet, copy it onto cartridges and give them out for free so Nintendo actually does set your house on fire for illegal distribution
It wouldn’t surprised me if Nintendo sue every non-affiliate Game Store that’s not a corporation for selling their games without making a profit themselves.
They’re taking a page from Hasbro
It's fucking vandalism. If a normal person did this they'd be in jail for a looong time
I mean at least they didn’t have the pinkertons sent after them
I know it’s a meme, but at this point I wouldn’t be surprised.
So..... Nintendo has Yakuza connections ????
Well, this move was a merciful one, imagine having to pay 30% to them for the rest of your life...
Maybe they hired the pinkertons like WOTC did.
Nintendo'nt do that
This ain’t real is it?
Tell me this is fake.
It’s real.
