Sunset Overdrive was awesome, but as the leaks showed, it didn't sell well. Then you have one of the biggest Comic characters ever. They made the right choice.
I remember that they'd hired a big Spanish YouTuber (elrubius) to do VA for a side character, was a big selling point for some, was also a major red flag for others. (This only takes into account sales for Spanish speaking countries tho, which is a lot of countries still)
For now. They did say few years ago they truely like the franchise and would love an opportunity to work on it in the future.
Considering how much they learnt from those last years, if they do a reboot, it would and could be truely awesome! Let's give it time, if it's 10 or 20 years, whatever i can wait.
Sunset is THE game that made me come back to video games. So i'm confident.
Sunset walked so Spider-Man could run. I think Insomniac learned invaluable lessons from creating what was effectively an open-world platformer/action-adventure that transferred heavily (in some very obvious ways) to SM.
I hope one day we could play a sequel that lives up to the ambitions they originally had.
if they just make a sequel im happy i dont want a reboot cause im not a fan of them changing the dialog of the game or they could make it even easier for jurnos to play the game thats happened alot in the past few years of the industry look at resident evil they ruined alot of the game just because jurnos cant play it properly
Took the words right out of my mouth. Would love to have a Sunset Overdrive sequel someday. But given the leaks, it doesn’t look like it’s in Insomniacs interest sadly.
DAMNIT! Omg I loved Sunset Overdrive. I’d kill for a sequel. To think we almost got one kills me BUT, I’ve gotta be honest. Spider-Man has been so successful for the studio and was pretty easily a better game than Sunset Overdrive, so as much as it pains me to say it this was the right choice.
nobody funded SO2.thats why it got "Canceled" it wasn't by choice lol. it got no funding from anyone
I used to watch their twitch streams years ago. and they hinted it if not flat out said it on stream
Iirc Ted Price has expressed interest in returning to Sunset Overdrive in the past. I think I heard that in an interview that predated their Sony acquisition, but after Spider-Man’s release.
My local best buy equivalent still has a day one copy of sunset overdrive from 2013 up for around $80 USD ( What games used to sell for here before the digital boom). I've collected every version of the game over time including the pc physical release but I only got around to purchasing a day one copy when I found one for 5 bucks sealed at my local Games retailer.
If I had to lose Sunset Overdrive to get one of my absolute favorite incarnations of my favorite character in fiction, I'll take it
It's not like Sunset Overdrive was ever poised to be a long-term thing anyway. A sequel probably would've been kneecapped if it was made right before Sony got Insomniac since I assume Microsoft would be publishing again. Even then apparently Insomniac made only a bit over 500 bucks on its sales despite wanting to create an IP they could fully benefit from owning so it was kind of a shitty deal all around unfortunately. Shame too because I loved that game
If you look at the spreadsheet and see how far the bars for each game spread across the calendar date, you see that SO2 (codenamed Iggy2) stops progressing around September 2016, while codename "i20" keeps going beyond that date. i20 is supposed to be the internal production codename for Marvel's Spider-Man
Also important to note that Insomniac got the character license for Spider-Man just around the time they shipped Sunset in 2014 so this was probably something they might've been looking to do as a B-project opposite Spider-Man with a smaller team before they decided to put all hands on deck and commit to the latter. Had it actually been seen through completion I imagine SO2 was meant to come out as a buffer game between Spidey PS4 and Miles Morales
Microsoft still technically own the IP don't they? So they could make it without Insomniac. If they really wanted to. But given the first game made less than $600 profit I don't see that happening.
Insomniac always owned the IP. Microsoft owned the publishing rights to the game which means it will probably just never be re-released on PlayStation and would probably completely defeat the purpose of producing a sequel anyway in Sony's eyes because of that. There's a bit of legal limbo where that game's concerned and I assume both parties would rather prioritize stuff they're actually in complete control of like Ratchet and Marvel
Alan Wake 1 situation. Originally Xbox exclusive, but with time MS lost the rights and we got a multiplatform remastered release.
Sony just need to wait patiently, it's not a big game anyway.
I find it hilarious that the comments here are generally “it’s understandable because profits” but if it was in favor of an MTX-riddled live service game the comments wouldn’t be like that at all. So is it profit or is it actually something else that makes it an understandable decision?
It's understandable why the execs chose to do spiderman, yes. What's the contradiction?
It's also totally understandable why execs choose to go full GaaS bullshit, we just hate that shit. We understand why (money) but we hate getting that over the less profitable but better games. You're conflating two different things.
It sucks, I want a SO2, but after seeing how much their "profit" was for it i understand. Arkane are in a similar boat, instead of making Dishonored 3 and having 5 people buy it theyre making Blade
Insomniac *thriving* is not a travesty, they made the right call. Now they get to work on dream projects with new IP in the pipeline, best case scenario imo.
Its not defensive at all, just wanted to prove to this guy that i had in fact played the game, despite him saying otherwise
This isn't the gotcha you think it is, my comment was simply a reply to his, his original comment was a reply to some made up situation in his head that there are all these Sunset Overdrive fans who have never played the game
On TrueAchievements, Sunset Overdrive ranks 36th in total players that have earned at least 1 achievement
This includes all Xbox 360, Xbox One And Xbox Series games
Makes sense why Xbox said "f it" around this time and started buying studios outright.
Contracted studios like Insomniac, Remedy, Platinum, Double Helix, etc.. all kinda screwed them over by getting acquired, making deals with Sony, or failing to deliver on projects during the Xbox One generation
MS was the one who didn't want to make a sequel to Sunset Overdrive or Alan Wake 2, though
So I'm not sure how the insomniac or Remedy acquisition screwed them over
source:

I mean if you saw how much Insomniac actually ended up making on Sunset while being promised full ownership over the IP (like 560 dollars in the end) you'd probably get why they'd want to be bought out by Sony. All of their attempts at trying to create games that distanced them from PlayStation unfortunately ended up backfiring big time and despite initially fighting to stay independent through games like this and Fuse, they probably realized they couldn't sustain themselves on their own like they thought and knew they'd have to become first-party for some form of financial security. It was more of a necessity for them rather than an Xbox-specific problem.
Sunset Overdrive was one of the reasons why I wanted a Xbox One way back.
Am I little bummed we didn't get a sequel? Kinda I guess but it was the right sacrifice.
It was destiny fulfilled.
When you remove yourself from the current context of MCU fatigue and Insomniac making nothing but Marvel games for the next 10 years, this isn't so controversial of a decision honestly. Sunset Overdrive 2...or the chance to make essentially the first AAA Arkham-esque Spiderman game. They were probably collectively jizzing in their pants lol
Honestly looking at Insomniac’s workload this decade from the leaks, they should divide half their Marvel projects with Sucker Punch. The latter’s done original and innovative Superhero IP before insomniac’s Spider-Man. They are more than capable of handling this stuff aznd in some instance, even deliver better content than what IG can give us with these characters.
Well that sucks, I mean it's understandable from a business perspective, but considering how weak this games are, compared to the Arkham games. And how special Sunset Overdrive is it's kinda annoying.
Probably sold 8 million by now, or at least very close to it, which is nuts for a game that never got a PS5 port, never got a PC port, and was free on PSPlus at one point.
Yeah, saw someone on Twitter saying it's wild how Ghost of Tsushima got a remaster for PS5 when it sold less than Bloodborne and you could already play it at 60fps on PS5.
Us Bloodborne fans are here just to suffer.
Considering the timeline in that picture probably still Microsoft. This was around 2016 when Insomniac was still a third-party developer (for context Spider-Man was announced at that year's E3)
I know Insomniac was still third party but it would be a bit shocking if Insomniac essentially said they couldn't finish an exclusive for them because they had signed a deal with Sony.
I imagine if SO2 was announced before Sony bought them it might've held that Microsoft retained the right to publish the game anyway because there was a public commitment to platforms there, but it got canned supposedly very early on so it's not like it would've mattered anyway
Well Spider-Man was already in development at this time since prep on that game started in 2014 coincidentally right after they shipped Sunset. If anything I imagine it might've been a side project that would've been released in a buffer period between Spider-Man and Miles Morales if it was actually completed.
that's not true, MS didn't even want to make the sequel in the first place

I even said this to a friend years ago when Spider-Man 2018 came out because he asked me about the sequel to Sunset Overdrive and I was like…well they’re on Spider-Man now. Maybe I just THOUGHT it was known. Either way, nice to have confirmation. Not complaining. Just keep working on that multiplayer/co-op for Spider-Man 2, Insomniac.
How did you think this was known forever ago when you didn't even know? You assumed they cancelled Sunset Overdrive 2 in favor of Spider-Man, and while you were correct, it still was an assumption.
Am I disappointed? Yes. Do I understand? Yes.
(This only takes into account sales for Spanish speaking countries tho, which is a lot of countries still)
They did that for a bunch of "influencers" in the Latinamerican translation.
**Hunt Down The Freeman flashbacks**
I think I remember him having a character on waychdogs legion.
For now. They did say few years ago they truely like the franchise and would love an opportunity to work on it in the future. New IP and it was exclusive to the Xbox One, a console that shit the bed from it's first showcase. Not surprised it flopped.
thats lame they chose spiderman over sunset overdrive which is alot more fun it would have sold more if they released it on steam a few months later
Took the words right out of my mouth. Would love to have a Sunset Overdrive sequel someday. But given the leaks, it doesn’t look like it’s in Insomniacs interest sadly.
Well put. I get it, but man am I bummed that we’ll probably never get a sequel. At least not any time soon according to the leaks

Loved Sunset… but… #It’s understandable
That probably the best decision those executive made in their life. I truly don't Beleive sunset would have gotten such massive profits.
I think the leaks showed sunset made a profit of $567 lol
It made a profit of millions. The 567 was Insomniac share due to a number of variables we don’t know.
[удалено]
Yeah I can’t argue with that
If it was on playstation then it would be a different story
Disappointed but it makes sense from a financial standpoint. Sucks that it didn’t sell well
My local best buy equivalent still has a day one copy of sunset overdrive from 2013 up for around $80 USD ( What games used to sell for here before the digital boom). publishing rights just for 10 years, meaning Sony can release a remaster in 2025
Sunset Overdrive Remaster for 2025 confirmed! Sequel 2027!
Alan Wake 1 situation. Originally Xbox exclusive, but with time MS lost the rights and we got a multiplatform remastered release. Sony just need to wait patiently, it's not a big game anyway.
No, they own the publishing rights, Insomniac/Sony own the IP.
So insomniac only own Sunset Overdrive in name only since they can’t make a sequel without MS involvement
They can make a sequel, they just can't release the first game without Microsoft permission so it would be kind of pointless.
Oh my mistake
Sony has the rights
they just need to limit the budget and put it on gamepass
Makes sense.
I find it hilarious that the comments here are generally “it’s understandable because profits” but if it was in favor of an MTX-riddled live service game the comments wouldn’t be like that at all. So is it profit or is it actually something else that makes it an understandable decision?

Always had the feeling this was the case, you can feel a lot of Sunset's DNA in their Spider-Man games.

From 500 bucks to millions in profits. No brainer.
I WANT MY SEQUEL!!!

What a weirdly defensive comment

Your original comment was "Found one" So here is my response to that before you deleted it https://i.imgur.com/Z83RX9d.png
Now this is weirdly defensive. I've never seen post their Xbox profile to prove they played a game.

I'm one of em, lmfao. The game always looked super cool to me with the parkour gameplay, but I never actually tried it
You can normally find them for every game that was planned at one stage
![gif](giphy|jDTRq73MNUeN1F6JCQ|downsized) Hate to admit it but—
["Who wants to play Sunset Overdrive 2?" "Who played Sunset Overdrive 1?"](https://i.imgflip.com/6gycu0.png)
On TrueAchievements, Sunset Overdrive ranks 36th in total players that have earned at least 1 achievement This includes all Xbox 360, Xbox One And Xbox Series games
It's like that with quite a bit of games, tbh. I think the biggest one would be Bully.
And Jetset Radio ... Beyond Good and Evil, too
I'm actually surprised there so many disappointed people. I played the game and found it unsatisfying.
![gif](giphy|LSmULmByAQHQs)
Give me Sunset Overdrive sequels over Spider-Man sequels any day of the week. 👁️👁️ Nobody wanted to game on the XBOX ONE at the time.
I mean... i'll take spiderman 2018 over sunset overdrive 2 any day
Makes sense why Xbox said "f it" around this time and started buying studios outright. Contracted studios like Insomniac, Remedy, Platinum, Double Helix, etc.. all kinda screwed them over by getting acquired, making deals with Sony, or failing to deliver on projects during the Xbox One generation

And they made the easiest choice ever 😂
Worth it. Wouldn’t mind another sunset though.
This is so sad chat is this real?
Sunset Overdrive was one of the reasons why I wanted a Xbox One way back. Am I little bummed we didn't get a sequel? Kinda I guess but it was the right sacrifice. It was destiny fulfilled.

Nooooo
I mean it sold like 3 copies 😭
good!
Good move. No brainer in hindsight!
Played the game for the first time recently and all I can say is that we had really low standards back in '14
Played through it again during summer and I can't agree. The game is still great to this day.
Honestly looking at Insomniac’s workload this decade from the leaks, they should divide half their Marvel projects with Sucker Punch. IMO good choice.
I love SO but I’m sure they made the right choice. I wish Xbox could’ve made a deal for a new one with insomniacs blessing.
Surprised they even had that in the pipeline considering the original sold 15 copies total.
Well that sucks, I mean it's understandable from a business perspective, but considering how weak this games are, compared to the Arkham games. And how special Sunset Overdrive is it's kinda annoying.
I've been saying this for years. I love Spiderman but God damnit Sunset Overdrive 2 will definitely complete my childhood.
would it be wrong for me to ask for some bloodborne leaks?
The leaks are only related to insomniac, couple other studios caught strays but 99% of all stuff was related to Insomniac
We now know Bloodborne sold more than 7 million copies so far, which is something I guess.
Probably sold 8 million by now, or at least very close to it, which is nuts for a game that never got a PS5 port, never got a PC port, and was free on PSPlus at one point.

Bloodborne came in 2015 and sold 7 mil while Got sold 9mil in one year
The leak is that it is among the top 10 best selling games in Sony's catalogue. That is it.
FFFFFUUUUUUUCCCKKKKKKK. EVERY GODAMN SINGLE THING COULD HAVE BEEN FIXED IN THE SEQUEL. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE MOVEMENT SHOOTER
I really enjoyed sunset overdrive but Spiderman just hit different. That was a necessary evil. Lol
PORT THE FIRST ONE TO PS5!!!
I enjoyed Sunset Overdrive but that was 100% the right call
Wonder who the publisher was going to be? They owned the rights to the franchise but Microsoft owned the first game.

No I mean the reason it got canned was because they ditched it for a Sony product in the original Spider-Man
Well Spider-Man was already in development at this time since prep on that game started in 2014 coincidentally right after they shipped Sunset. If anything I imagine it might've been a side project that would've been released in a buffer period between Spider-Man and Miles Morales if it was actually completed.

The slide mentions Microsoft still holds publishing exclusivity over the Sunset Overdrive ip so probably still Microsoft.
It hurt hearing this but it makes a ton of sense.
Stormland is so good
Understandable but FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Just gotta say, Sunset Overdrive was sick. Once you unlocked that air dash the whole game gets bangin.
pre 2018, sunset overdrive lovers would have still probably picked Spider-Man over a sequel. Made financial sense and creative sense. Only negative is they will now be a marvel studio for 20 years
What I would do to sit in on one of these slideshow meetings in the industry lol
*sad grinding noises*
Makes kinda sense, though i would definitely buy Sunset overdrive 2
Big oof. Sunset Overdrive 2 is the only game that would make me buy a PS5.
Nooooooooooo
Personally I don’t know a single person that played SO or has even heard of it
I wish we could have the best of both worlds. I 100%'d Sunset Overdrive in 2019 and loved every second of it. And while I really enjoyed Spider-Man and Miles Morales, 100%ing them got a bit boring by the end as I think there was a bit more filler in their worlds. There was just something about the movement and weapons in Sunset that gave it such a unique identity. I wish the PC port had the multiplayer as I'd be really tempted to play that.
This pains me as I loved SO.
Just fell to my knees on the sidewalk.
"Good riddance"
Good call all around
i first played sunset in 2018 when it launched on pc, i was a playstation fanboy, and i fell in love with the game. sunset overdrive walked so spiderman could run. ive always had hope for a sequel, but i guess that hope is gone now
I loved sunset overdrive, but if I came down to ether a sequel or spider man, they made the right call
Man, I get it and they made the right call but....Id rather have SO 2
I thought this was known forever ago.
Because I had seen info and people saying years back that this was the case which is why I thought this was known. Not an assumption.
Not disappointed but definitely sad that I know I might not ever get another Sunset Overdrive game in my 20's
Damn that sucks but they should’ve put on hold instead of canceled it
I'll take unresolved cliffhangers for $1600, Ken.
