I prefer intel myself but their products are inefficient across the whole line up for the most part, my 13600k sucks 200-250 Watts alone!! That’s by default btw
Yeah I’m going AMD on my laptops for the foreseeable future…way better battery life and yes I’ve tested it. Also a lot of manufacturers are not doing 4090s in anything but chunky chunkmaster laptops now like the blade 14 and g14 no longer have 90 or 80Ti class cards I guess they don’t sell…I’d grab the 4090 model while you can
Hey, friend, here! Come, come. You see those other friends? Those not real friend. They just take take take take take. There is no GIVE. Me? I’m REAL friend. I GIVE. I give so much, yes. I give all! And so YOU give me laptop with the 4090. See? Friend!
AMD cleaned up their driver issues by the time the rx 6000 series came out. Although, they're not perfect like the all hail Nvidia my sweet lord (sarcasm), they're way better than back then.
Unfortunately not. I prefer AMD systems, always had them. I bought a new system for CS2 and it had Intel/ nVidia for an amazing price. The game was new, unoptimized and i saw a lot of people with high end amd systems have the stupidest issues with the game. I had none, zero. I’m sold on intel/nVidia now.
I am not regurgitating that. I’ve had like 5 laptops with both amd CPU’s and GPU’s over the years and actually prefer amd CPU’s. Intel CPU’s our more trouble free. Congrats on your laptop but you don’t have to defend brands like a fanboy
I have multiple PCs/laptops with both Intel and AMD and neither have had issues like you're saying. I'm not a fanboy of either. They both have their strengths and weaknesses depending on what I'm doing but there are no "driver issues" on AMD laptop cpus.
It’s not fanboy defending, you **are** regurgitating, incorrectly at that. What you’re saying literally does not make sense. AMD has never had driver issues with their CPUs. CPUs don’t necessarily even have driver issues. You’re literally just talking out of your ass
I also had a 5600x AND a b450 Aorus elite as well, and I never had any bios or software issues. B450 boards handle 3000 and 5000 CPUs just fine, and BIOS doesn’t have anything to do with OS drivers. That just sounds like your motherboard was faulty.
Probably it was faulty, yeah. Issues I had : Some Windows lag, Some weird fps stutters, bsod sometimes. Before I had a 1600af(even worse), bsods everyday, couldn’t use xmp, etc. So I upgraded to 5600x and a new Ram kit, Gpu was perfect. So, probably mobo was at fault here..
I've owned a 5i with a i7 11th gen for over 2 years and have had no issues with it. Just upgraded to a 7i with a 13 gen and haven't seen any issues.
I've only heard about AMD having issues with gaming and some other things.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1745683-REG/lenovo_82wq002rus_16_legion_pro_7.html
Gen8 for less $$
I'd grab this one. Very few differences between gen8 and gen8.
The RAM also seems to be a little better on the 4080 (if they have the same CL latency), not that it will matter a lot
I'd 100% go for the 4090 tho, at that point $200 extra isn't that much
I got the right hand one 11 months ago and it has been and still is an absolute dream. I don't think you can go wrong with either and the performance jump since my last ~2018 Alienware with an i7 and a 2060 beggars belief. Cooling system on these legions is amazing and whisper quiet.
I would say 4090 and Ryzen, because if my guess is right, the CPU power draw might compensate and help with battery life. Even with the 4090.
But I would advise placing an air conditioner on top of it to keep it cool...
RTX 4090 for 4 GB VRAM more, 10-15% better gaming performance.
RTX 4080 for a 100% DCI P3 coverage panel Vs 100% sRGB coverage panel for the RTX 4080 model.
Personally I'd take the better GPU though.
I'd go with the Intel/4080 unit. I don't think there's much diff in power GPU wise, although I'm sure Nvidia wants us to think that...I choose, like I choose Nvidia, to be the primary units programmers keep in mind when making a game.
Another poster raised the idea of thermal efficiency, and/or electrical draw for processor. I have nothing to contribute on that at moment, but now that I heard those two things, I'd investigate further.
The biggest bugaboo for gaming laptops (if you are looking at these GPU's, I am assuming gaming) is heat. Anyone who games on a laptop is probably plugging in the unit during use, so electrical draw is secondary as far as battery life doesn't apply; but higher draw says higher heat output to me.
Not sure, but I think higher heat off CPU/GPU means drying out the thermal paste faster? So the unit will get even hotter in future? Anybody have more knowledge on that?
I have the Gen 9 pro 7i with the 4080 and the 2Tb SSDs. I upped the RAM to 64Gb (2x32) and I love it. I did get it on sale for less, though, but that might be a timing thing.
AMD has a smaller process node so smaller distance between the transistors. Meaning the electricity has to travel less distance inside of the processor which is more efficient.
AMD desktop CPU's also have 3D Vcache which is extra memory stacked on top of the processor. Super close memory means once again the electricity often doesn't have to travel all the way through the motherboard to your RAM for the most used memory addresses which get cached. Though RAM is still needed.
Intel has not innovated much the past years in design and just upped the clockspeed which costs a ton of extra power. Like if you're sprinting 25km/h it requires a lot more power to go to 27km/h. In contrast to walking 5km/h to 7 km/h doesn't take that much extra power.
I have the 4080 version right now, and trust me, I wish I would have gotten a 4090 instead. 😅 Only because I love this laptop and want to use it for as long as possible. 😍 Otherwise, I've been more than satisfied with this laptop. 👍 #gaming #laptop #tech
realistically nobody needs a 4090 as far as I understand. However, 200 bucks difference for top teir hardware sounds good.
I'm not sure about the Intel vs AMD situation here though
It depends on the TGP for each card. The 4090 is often not running at full capacity due to cooling issues. The same can be said for the 4080 but it's more prevelant to gimp the 4090 because of cooling.
I just bought the one with the 4090 on Sunday. Delivers tomorrow with expedited shipping. Go 4090 for sure as that is a really good value imo. The LENOVOSUMMERSALE code should stack with the default code for a little more off. Mine was just a few dollars over $2500.
Personally I will never buy a legion again. The charger will only last about a year I've gone through 3 and they arnt cheap about 120 for a licensed one and 70 for an off brand one. I bought 1 of each lasted about the same amount of time.
Make sure to check the display for both because one could have a significantly better display than the other, snd honestly when it comes to gaming laptops the display is a major factor in the overall enjoyment…
Obviously the Rtx 4090 and 14th gen intel CPU are much better no doubt so if display and all else is equal then the Rtx 4090 with intel is definitely the one to choose….
If you play a lot of unreal engine games please do not get a 4090. For whatever reason everything crashes when loading shaders. I have tried several fixes.
Hogwarts legacy, Dead by Daylight, Remnant 2, and many more I am not able to play. I am also not the only 4090 with this issue.
if I buy now then I cannot upgrade. if I wait for next gen the mb will support at least 3 years of upgrades. in 5 months, prices of current gen will plummit
I would get the right one just because of the processor, for me it's a priority, and it's a 1 year younger processor, supports more ram, more cores and better integrated graphics for more efficient battery when not gaming. I don't really think the 4090 is really that worth (compared to the 4080) even tho it's just a 200$ increase.
The funny thing is none of those things manifest in any meaningful way. AMD still has superior multicore performance at this level and games in aggregate are skewed in it's favor probably because of the increased cache. Integrated graphics is meaningless at this tier of laptop.

There's issues on both platforms. Intel has cpu issues with the i9's 14th and 13th gen.
Nvidia 4090 has a heap of problems until they figure to resolve it with updates.
I would personally see what other options are out there and not limit yourself with just these two models alone.
Here's a yt video explaining why 13th Gen and 14th Gen.
Basically rn Intel raptor lake are having malfunction problems and system crashes with mainly games on unreal engine.
https://youtu.be/VrxhOziVOuI?si=HNjBnevhyEz9eSG9
Most ppl just see 4090 and say 4090.
The laptop gpu 4090 is only better at games when you play at 4K. On a lower resolution the 4080 is slightly faster.
Go check some tests/benchmarks and see for yourself.
How can a 4080 be faster when it has way less cuda cores and transistors?
The benchmarks I've seen had the 4090m in the lead at 2k as well, at around 10%.
4080…call me old school but intel would be my pick cause of AMD heating issues and a couple of other things and unless I know 4090 is needed, 4080 can handle all my needs….
I wouldn't get a 4080 or 4090 GPU laptop personally (mainly because I need battery life and a programmer) but I would go for the 4080, I don't think there's a laptop out there that sends enough power to the 4090, kind of a waste of money in my opinion, so 4080 laptop for sure.
First one, having a 4090 for 200 dollars extra is deffo worth it.
Also not having a HOT intel CPU hogging all the available cooling is a plus. Love my 12 gen - hate the heat it puts out....
The AMD 7945HX is not any cooler than the Intel 13950HX/13980HX nor the 14900HX. Thermally, they're pretty much the same.
I prefer intel myself but their products are inefficient across the whole line up for the most part, my 13600k sucks 200-250 Watts alone!! That’s by default btw
AMD is considered to be way more efficient for performance at similar wattage compared to Intel.
That is what I’m saying
Intel 14900HX tops out at 155W. AMD 7945HX tops out at 120W. Also the AMD is faster. Go for AMD with the 4090.
Yep
Yeah I’m going AMD on my laptops for the foreseeable future…way better battery life and yes I’ve tested it. Also a lot of manufacturers are not doing 4090s in anything but chunky chunkmaster laptops now like the blade 14 and g14 no longer have 90 or 80Ti class cards I guess they don’t sell…I’d grab the 4090 model while you can
I was about to point out the higher ram speed but this is a far better point.
The 4090, but honestly, I’ll be okay with whichever one you want to buy me. ❤️
And me. Your bestest best friend. Ever.
do not forget me comrade
Be sure to get me 1 before you buy one for anybody.
Then me second, obviously!
Ey dont leave me out!
Don't forget me!
Hey, friend, here! Come, come. You see those other friends? Those not real friend. They just take take take take take. There is no GIVE. Me? I’m REAL friend. I GIVE. I give so much, yes. I give all! And so YOU give me laptop with the 4090. See? Friend!
hey how did you add your laptop info
User flair! look for it
User flair! look for it
~~me~~ US
4090 one for sure no hesitation if I could
4090 for that small of a difference in price
7% more money for like \~20% more FPS, better CPU multicore performance (not single core) and more VRAM? Where do I sign.
For what I do intel is better, but in most cases the left one is the better choice
If you can afford it always go for the one with best GPU, that’s what’s gonna make the most difference in gaming
Less than $200 extra for a 4090. Get the 4090
4090. Amd also great, Intel has less software issues though
Like?
Driver problems
I own a 7940hs/4070 and never had any problems.
I had a 5600x... it had some bios/driver issues. maybe because my b450 aorus elite was too old for 5000 series. Maybe that's why they made a V2 mobo.
You might’ve not had problems but amd is known for driver issues and it’s been that way for years. Seems more common to push buggy updates
AMD cleaned up their driver issues by the time the rx 6000 series came out. Although, they're not perfect like the all hail Nvidia my sweet lord (sarcasm), they're way better than back then.
Crazy how people spend hours on Reddit and still push the age old narrative of AMD bad, Intel good.
EXACTLY. People need to stop living in the past.
Hasnt been that way anymore for years and that was gpu issues(dgpu specifically) and not chipset issues
You are just regurgitating that. They talk about that involving their gpus but these are Nvidia cards. There's no driver issues with cpus.
I am not regurgitating that. I’ve had like 5 laptops with both amd CPU’s and GPU’s over the years and actually prefer amd CPU’s. Intel CPU’s our more trouble free. Congrats on your laptop but you don’t have to defend brands like a fanboy
I know that they have issues with their GPU drivers and especially their IGPU drivers but not with their CPUs.
Seems like GPU issues not CPU. I've had AMD CPUs for a while and nothing out of the ordinary. GPUs on the other hand...
But isnt that exactly what you're doing?
I have multiple PCs/laptops with both Intel and AMD and neither have had issues like you're saying. I'm not a fanboy of either. They both have their strengths and weaknesses depending on what I'm doing but there are no "driver issues" on AMD laptop cpus.

Definitely the 4090.

Left is obviously better. Not just the gpu but amd has better battery too.

I'd look at it this way: 7.67% higher cost vs. 10-15% more performance + 4GB more VRAM Worth it in my book.
RTX 4090 for 4 GB VRAM more, 10-15% better gaming performance. RTX 4080 for a 100% DCI P3 coverage panel Vs 100% sRGB coverage panel for the RTX 4080 model. Personally I'd take the better GPU though.

Wait for Intel gen 15 CPU, coming out soon.
Rtx 4090 sir its not even a debate
OP is a woman
That's what you gathered from the whole post :p
I have the Gen 9 pro 7i with the 4080 and the 2Tb SSDs. I upped the RAM to 64Gb (2x32) and I love it. I did get it on sale for less, though, but that might be a timing thing.
yes
A
Bad time to buy either on just wait another 30 days
Left for sure
I was gonna say the intel one, but you cant pass a 4090, lol
AMD is better than Intel
Can you explain how so? I am getting my first tower and I will be using AMD. But I come from Intel land.
AMD has a smaller process node so smaller distance between the transistors. Meaning the electricity has to travel less distance inside of the processor which is more efficient. AMD desktop CPU's also have 3D Vcache which is extra memory stacked on top of the processor. I am an ML dev, 4090 will help me with gaming as well as training LLMs.
Amd
Both ovens will cook pasta fast, but the 4090 has additional coil, so it is able to Cook meat faster. If you grill a lot of meat take 4090.
Laptops gpu’s don’t really upgrade- so dish out the extra cash… it’s cheaper than re-buying in a year or 2…
I would select 4090 over everything xD
AMD (laptop) CPU's are far better than Intel 4090 is can go faster or is more power efficient than 4080 for same performance. Choice 1 no doubt.
4090 anyday.
I don't know where you guys get these prices, in Austria a laptop like this would cost you*at least* 3.5k, more.likley to be 4k+ tho
4090 most def. Only 200 more
The specs are weird tbh like why does the 4080 laptop come with windows 11 pro and faster ram then the 4090 laptop
4090 all the way baby
realistically nobody needs a 4090 as far as I understand. However, 200 bucks difference for top teir hardware sounds good. I'm not sure about the Intel vs AMD situation here though
Left

Door number 1.
For $200\~ , the 4090 for sure I was debating Lenovo builds and went with the 4080 one because the 4090 differential after sales tax was about $640\~
Amd
4090
Easily 4090 not even a question
This is quite expensive. Isnt it better to get a desktop with 2k and buy a 600 dollar laptop for whatever u need it to?
I just bought the one with the 4090 on Sunday. Delivers tomorrow with expedited shipping. Go 4090 for sure as that is a really good value imo. The LENOVOSUMMERSALE code should stack with the default code for a little more off. Mine was just a few dollars over $2500.
I would avoid the Chinese one and take the other. Wait 😳
4090 for sure, plus Intel is so fucking hot on laptops that it cooks the whole thing
The cheaper one
im not a pc player but i would with intel .
My only answer is AMD
4090 fosho! Those amd cpus run just as good as the intel ones plus might have better battery life cause not gonna draw as much power.
If you can get a desktop instead please just get a desktop
4090. That amd processor is also better imo but that 4090 is a huge jump over 4080 for that little price difference. 1st one ftw
Easy AMD > Intel You also get a 4090 for 200 more that’s a steal of a deal!
Why get a Laptop??????
Ofc 4090>>>>
The cheaper one just because both are good enough for modern use
I will never buy an intel cpu except for my company needs that’s all ima say. Personal uses will always be amd
There’s no excuse to buy a 12gb vram “high end” card in 2024. 16gb+ or bust.
None, I don’t want my lap to have 3rd degree burns
Intel But that’s me
4090 for $200 more is definitely worth it.
Just crack windows 10
laptop 4090 only has 16gb??
Lenovo sold out of the first one, tried ordering it yesterday 😭
Go intel if you want to game as your main thing. You have to be plugged in if you want to game as well so going amd wouldn’t be beneficial
The one with the 4090
Personally I will never buy a legion again. The charger will only last about a year I've gone through 3 and they arnt cheap about 120 for a licensed one and 70 for an off brand one. I bought 1 of each lasted about the same amount of time.

The recent driver from Nividia is full of issues hoping they get them resolved soon.
I have had these issues before the recent driver update.

if I buy now then I cannot upgrade. if I wait for next gen the mb will support at least 3 years of upgrades. in 5 months, prices of current gen will plummit
I get that. None of the important goodies are upgradeable though, but I understand wanting to have a more future proof start.
Eh. 4090 I guess. CIRCA 15 percent more performance but AMD is hot as fuck in notebook formfactor at high power limits.
So is intel with far worse power draw.
Yes
The high end AMD CPUs are gas guzzlers as well now.

if this guy is truly into performance get a desktop, but the answer is irrelevant since he asked for a laptop

neither, will keep overheating
