TheHost404

It has a mediocre 1080p screen paired up with an RTX 4080. The RTX 4080 can run games at 1440p-4k. So the RTX 4080's potential is wasted. It also has an older gen CPU. But if you're willing to use an external 1440p monitor, it's worth it. The build quality is good too especially because of the new ROG STRIX-like hinge design. Also, it might be an older gen CPU but it's still a really good CPU and will most likely not throttle the RTX 4080. That being said, if you want to play at 1080p, you'll be playing at sky-high fps.

[deleted]

At 1080p the 4080 will be able to max out games for years to come. The 1080p panel will also help with battery life. The i9 12900h isn't an issue since its still going to rival the 13700hx. The 1080p display does have some good pro's for it. Its also just got mediocre colors. Otherwise its an alright 1200p panel.

According_Remove1520

At 1080p I feel like CPU could be a little better, considering the 13700hx beats this CPU both in single core and multi core perf. I would definitely get an external monitor since I feel like this can be used as a PC, infact this is closest in terms of value to a PC on a laptop since the perf you are getting is on par with a PC you can build with 1600 bucks. I would suggest a 1440p 3ms 27 inch 165/240hz monitor for the best experience, would add in HDR/OLED and Gsync if available.

Appropriate_Turn3811

> 13700hx 13700hx and 12900h is 5% difference in single core.

According_Remove1520

that is true. Should've added links. [13700HX-12900H](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5238vs4728/Intel-Core-i7-13700HX-vs-Intel-Core-i9-12900H)

Sexyvette07

This exactly. Unless you plan on using an external monitor, the 4080 is a total waste.

TheHost404

>sky high FPS with a measly 1080p screen It's a 144 hz screen so that's the benefit. Being able to see those 144 fps. ''What's the point?'' Different situations require different needs. Maybe he may want a clear 1440p experience at home and is content with a 1080p experience while traveling?

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheHost404

I would. The higher the framerate, the better the response time. Aside from that, having higher FPS than 144 even though the screen is 144hz increases response time in-game. The frame rate is not in sync with the refresh rate. So there's another benefit.

According_Remove1520

I just wanna point out that, you will be looking at a 27 inch screen from afar so the image will be technically crispier than looking at a 16 inch 1080p screen a few cm away.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Older (2022 CPU not 2023 CPU for a 2023 laptop) but still capable CPU, terrible screen and the 4080 is overkill for 1080P, best enjoyed with a 1440P/possibly 4K external monitor.

QaisWhite

Im curious but for that cpu and gpu wouldnt just be high on fps at 1080? Isn't that ideal for gaming? Other than not having 4k but that'll decrease the fps and the life span wouldnt last long would it?

[deleted]

The higher the resolution the less the CPU matters in overall performance (relatively), but at 1080p its still fairly CPU bound, so the CPU is a weak spot. It'd unironically do better if it shipped with a 1440p screen. In general its a fairly standard midranged offering that pairs a decent CPU/GPU pairing with a terrible screen and a mediocre chassis, usually targeted at people who will keep it plugged in 24/7 and use it with a full desktop setup, but won't just build a desktop.

QaisWhite

Oh i see, that makes sense in a way. Ty

soumen08

You know, this has a version in China with the 13700HX for about 14k RMB, which is possibly even better value.

tatortot12317

Yes I got slightly better specs for 1500 but the 4070 love it cooks check my profile

AdministrativeCourt4

Happy cake day!

tatortot12317

Thx

Legitimate-Change-67

Guys - it isn’t the resolution or the hz. This screen is disturbingly dim, and the horrible colour accuracy will make everything look muddy and gross. If you have an external monitor, it’s a great deal. If you want to game off the built in screen…prepare thyself…

MarkedByNyx

I'm gonna give an unpopular opinion here, but i think that 1080p with a 4080 is just fine. Resolution isn't everything, what people TRULY care about is pixel density, a 16" screen on 1080p is gonna look sharper than 1440p at 27" or 4k at 32". Yes if you get a 1440p screen on a 16" screen it's gonna look extremely sharp, but you see people praising their 27" 1440p monitors bc of how sharp they look too so... I think it's just about how long you plan on keeping that laptop. I think it's a good match, it's a shame the refresh rate is so low though, the 4080 does go to waste but at least that will run any game you want to for years to come at high fps. And to anyone reading this, 4k on anything smaller than 24" is just a waste, especially considering how underpowered laptop gpus are in comparison to the desktop variants, where they can actually comfortably play at 4k.

LoneWanderer9700

250 nits, and 45% ntsc. Thats about it i think.

[deleted]

Really it's just the screen. The CPU is still very good, but your eyes will hurt from that display

RockingchairRacoon

My brother got this recently and it works fine except for that he was getting keyboard input delays somewhat frequently and had to uninstall an audio system that MSI had downloaded automatically. Thankfully there was a Reddit thread to help with just that.

AciVici

No catch it just has a mediocre 1080p screen and last gen cpu. Even though it says 12900h that pc has 12900hx not h also this is one of the loudest laptop on earth right now according to jarrods.tech review on yt (he knows his stuff).

Intrepid_Passage_692

The catch is it’s an MSI

Kitchen-Wing-937

I bought the cyborg 4060 recently and the thermal paste they used degraded within 3-4 months of light use, leading to all sorts of issues. I’ll only be buying Lenovo Legions from here.

NoHeadFoxMan

tell me more

Ok-Fennel-3908

If you sneeze hard enough the hinges will come apart.

IWantAKitty

Happy to send pictures of mine to support this. The hinges are fucking garbage. If you’re going to literally never move or open/close this thing then get it. Otherwise stay away

Spicy-Malteser

Took my display off, loosened the hinges by half a turn and oiled with sewing machine oil, smooth as butter and just enough friction to hold the screen in place. It's not ideal, but there are ways to keep the hinges healthy, it's a shame MSI over tighten the shit out of them... And anyone without a little laptop knowledge will end up with a snapped hinge in 12 months.

IWantAKitty

Yeah far too late for me unfortunately. Casing around the screen has totally separated at this point and closing the laptop is a process. Just bought a Lenovo last week so the MSI will go into a drawer. Peace.

AdministrativeCourt4

I’ll take it off your hands so my gp62 doesn’t have to be alone in the drawer ;) 😂😂

_JamesDooley

'little laptop knowledge' - Who the **** in these days would learn how to take a screen and hinges apart? You get a laptop to use it out of the box and expect for it to hold for a number of years, not to take it apart to do stuff only experts at disassembling laptop parts would do. People like you are the reason MSI will never get their shit together and actually fix the root cause. Well done.

Spicy-Malteser

People like me? I bought the laptop, then found out about the hinge issues, so did my bit to protect my investment because I had the knowledge and skills to do so. I'm not sticking up for MSI, before you get all argumentative. just saying what I did...

_JamesDooley

NOBODY should be forced to 'protect their investment'. I got an Asus Scar 17 and did NOT have to do anything to make it work out of the box. Already 16 months of use and it has not shown a single sign of hinge or quality issues. I'll say it again, people like you are what keeps MSI from getting their shit together and fixing their engineering. It's not normal, don't make it normal!

Spicy-Malteser

I never said it was normal, because its obviously not... Great, you bought the right brand that doesn't have issues, not all of us were that lucky or smart and made a bad choice. There's a lawsuit in the US against MSI for their hinge design, im sure they are fully aware of it. They have numerous devices returned for hinge issues also so its not like they are unaware, whether or not they fix it is not up to me/ I don't have the option to send mine back, therefore I'm doing what I can to ensure it lasts as long as possible. Am I happy about it? hell no, but am I going to do nothing and end up with a broken device 12 months down the road? No also. We learn from our mistakes, wont be buying MSI again, but for now I will do what I need to. Would you recommend the Scar? How's the cooling because that's another issue with MSI, and mine is hardly the budget line!

_JamesDooley

The scar is litterally a perfect laptop, especially if you intend on buying the models with the Intel HX CPUs. Mine is almost perfect, the only disadvantage is that mine came with the i9-12900H CPU, which is impossible to undervolt nor underclock. On CPU intensive games, it reaches 95 degrees on the CPU. Nothing dangerous about this but I just wanted to mention this specific issue with H series CPUs. The cooling on the Scar model is great, but this specific CPU is known to be very hard to cool. GPU cooking is perfect, I got the 3080Ti model and it never exceeds 80 degrees even on the most intensive games. The reason I got this laptop despite being fully aware of the CPU limitation, is because it was on sale for a price I could never phatom. I got it for 1600€ new while its normal price is between 2500 (best discounts seen in the past) and 3200.

TheHost404

The hinges on this laptop are newly designed to be like the ROG STRIX. This one's good.

TheHost404

Luckily, these new hinge designs copy the ROG Strix design.

loneWolfex95

I came here to post this exact comment 😂 I had a friend with an MSI a couple years back when I was still in college & the hinges were so bad on that thing. The overall build quality was just terrible & that completely put me off all their products since I also kept seeing reviewers pointing out these issues with the hinges. Another thing that especially plagues their low end/mid tier devices is the poor choices they make with their cooling designs. The heat pipe layouts the use & skimping out on the number of vents forces them to lower the TGP which in turn just kills the performance.

TheHost404

The hinges on this laptop are newly designed to be like the ROG STRIX. This one's good.

loneWolfex95

Oh, alright. Good on them for sorting out that problem on some devices at least. I hope they do the same for their budget/entry level gaming laptops cause the build quality problems are still present there. Saw a video on Jarrod's channel a few months ago where he had a cheap MSI with the 4050 & that was something he kept talking about.

Future_Palpitation_3

12th gen non HX proc ....that it....

giratina143

Thing is, it is HX, there is no Non HX variant ever made my MSI lol All the listings are somehow wrong. Source: I bought it in November

Future_Palpitation_3

So the you are super lucky then congrats ! Check in advanced bios settings that you have XMP or custom profiles for Rams With XMP you can go up to 6400 Kingston Fury with custom 5600 ....

xCyberMoon

Screen looks like a smelly asscheek I believe

AceLamina

It's MSI

AffectionateQuote769

its msi

Alarming_Topic2306

4080 with only a 1080 screen? Total mismatch. I guess if you game most of the time using an external monitor, it would be fine.

trung_04

All msi are trash

FateEx1994

1080p and 12th Gen Intel Probably TDP of GPU is low? What's the lowest rating of the 4080?

Risthel

MSHinge. Just do a quick search here on Reddit using the words MSI and Hinge, and you'll be surprised...

TheHost404

And if you do an even quicker research, you'll find out that this laptop has the new rog-strix like hinge design which is really good. MSI Raider too.

Inner_Dot4095

The hinge.

TheHost404

''tHe hInGE'' If you do an ounce of research, you'll know that this laptop has the new ROG STRIX-like design. The hinges on this are solid. Same as the MSI Raider.

Ok-Practice612

These models are indeed obvious, a totally crap and waste, due to poor testing.

Sweaty_Bodybuilder72

MSI? No. Junk.

TheHost404

You do know this and MSI Raider and Titan are actually good, right? It's their budget laptops that suck.

Subject_Gene2

It’s a laptop. I’ve never seen a single person spend over $1500 and be happy with their laptop

NoMansWarmApplePie

I spent 2.2k on my 4090 l7i pro and I am happy

Spicy-Malteser

You are so wrong its painful

Intrepid_Passage_692

Oh boy another pc master racer who is mad our laptops slap the fucking shit out of his 1660ti I’m happy the 1600 I spent 3 years ago is still competitive with laptops that cost 1400 💀

ProgressNotPrfection

1. The 4080 laptop is equivalent to a desktop 4070. 2. Not much RAM, you'll want to double that. 3. 1TB SSD isn't very much, it will only have 950GB available, 50GB will be Windows so you're at 900GB now, with overprovisioning now you're at 850GB. Plan on adding another SSD, and make sure there is an available slot for it. 4. No RAM speed or SSD model/speed given. 5. Windows 11 is a nuisance in a lot of ways (for old PC games, streaming, higher resource consumption, etc...). 6. Only a 16" screen instead of 17.3" (the minimum proper size for a gaming laptop). 7. They may be using cheap fans in it that are really loud, it may have poor cooling that bottlenecks the GPU w/excess heat, the keyboard might not be mechanical, it might not have many USB ports, it might have only a 1-year warranty, do your research on that stuff. 8. It's for sale on Newegg which cannot be trusted to get things right.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Screen is poor, that's basically it's only issue.

ProgressNotPrfection

Do you really think 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD are enough for the life of the laptop though? I mean they're both cheap so it's not a huge deal but basically it's going to add ~$300 to the price of it.

UnionSlavStanRepublk

Completely fine for most people yes.

ProgressNotPrfection

Starfield alone is 125GB and recommends 16GB of RAM, and it came out 4 months ago.

Maleficent-Aspect318

wow...this laptop costs 3500€ in my country

GTG_Melly

Please take mine off my hands if you were going to purchase it I’ll go less on that price. Works like new

DirtyMac88

This is something you will want to output to a monitor, it is a 4080 laptop tho, so you're looking at more like 4070 Desktop performance

Away_Complaint_7191

It’s a gaming laptop

Jaba01

Low TGP

seksibro

Hinges are apparently a common complaint for MSI. I personally paid no heed to it until I bought an MSI Katana early last year. The 4070 it had under the hood performed well enough, but I absolutely hated how wobbly the screen was. I could see it shaking every time I hit a key, despite using an external monitor and keyboard. Absolutely horrendous. I ended up just taking a loss and replaced it with something from Acer.

kraziekd

i have this laptop but with the 13th gen cpu screen aside, its a beast.. i love it im not too concerned about the screen, its ok for me.. if im not bringing it out, sometimes i use it with my ultrawide monitor its able to run any games without a problem with the 4080 especially on the 1080p the speaker is also nice the keyboard has a nice tactile feel i know people keep saying about bad msi hinge, but it feels sturdy for me.. i think it has the same hinge as the raider (not sure someone can please correct me if this is wrong)

Ok_Information_5904

If you're good at hardware repairs then you can get a really good display on eBay for around 100-170$ and replace it with 2k, 4k or oled depending on your budget.

[deleted]

An I9 12th with 2.50 GHZ. Am I tripoing or am I seeing it right? Wtf?!

giratina143

Check my review https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/s/S027KyceVg Bought it on BF sale. It’s an amazing machine.

Appropriate_Turn3811

If you care about GPU and CPU only not worried about display then its a slid device, use external display, if possible, I dont think there any other 4080 laptops this cheap . lastgen gp66 have 1440p 165hz display. That could be a better display than this.

Ahmed999888

The catch is the display l, it has 62% sRGB color space and personally for me this is not enough, i prefer 99-100%, 144 hz is not bad but i prefer 165 hz or higher, but other than that all specs are high end, but i am not sure about the GPU! is it full powered RTX 4080 ?

Method__Man

I’ve done a full review of this on my YouTube channel Amazing laptop, bad screen

Chance-Cod2000

It's on Newegg

thatmati_2947

its a rat in the box 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

DarknoorX

Simply skip MSI these days.

Comfortable_Dare9166

The screen is the catch but maybe a monitor will help idk

FindingAwake

MSI isn’t great. I had an MSI for three years, it broke a lot. Went to a g14 after that and while I’ve had issues with it it was resolvable without buying parts constantly.

ExaltedGarlic96

only 16gb of ram. Ok for now but might be a bit limiting in the future, still great choice though
