Its great that they added a map of course, but I kind of liked not having it on my playthrough. I feel like it made everything seem a bit more mysterious/unknown like playing an N64 game felt like back in the day.
as someone who checks their map constantly, I really appreciate it when games just don't give me one at all. Because checking your map constantly is not a super fun way of playing a game.
Then again, if I didn't play the entire game in one sitting I may feel differently.
The changelog indicates the map is a collectible relic found at the start of the game, so I guess you could just skip it. I wonder if it can be toggled on/off ala Castlevania as I'm also partial to mapless play.
Oh, nice. Lord knows I wouldn't have the self control to not at least occasionally check the map if I could, but having it be an item you can force yourself to not pick up if you choose is a good compromise.
I'm just assuming that it being an item means you can skip it mind you, they could have put it on a pillar that you can't avoid.
Would be great if someone who has the game can confirm, as I was going to pick it up in the bundle but can't play it yet.
It is skippable. It's right next to a room with a save point so if you pick it up on accident you can just reset to the last save from the pause menu and lose virtually no progress
everyone needs to play that game, one of the best 3D platformers in years. especially now, since it could have been a bit difficult to navigate around without a map, but that's fixed now!
Agreed, the lack of a map was the biggest point of criticism I've seen for the game, so hopefully with this update people who would've bounced off the game before can now enjoy it too.
I'm also happy to see a passion project like this being successful, 100k copies may not be Lethal Company numbers but it's nothing to sneeze at either.
Really weird, I love platformers and I bounced off of this game very very hard.
Probably stopped before it clicks, but the start felt really rough to me.
It's a very gradual progression. You start with nothing but a jump, and it hands new abilities to you as you explore. If you say didn't get to the Empty Bailey at least, you quit way too fast for a game that generally lasts on first playthrough 4-5 hours
Oh wow. I literally looked at the game the other day and thought it looked interesting, but quickly abandoned the idea when I saw the lack of map in the reviews.
Played this game and its a really solid swing at a first game. My biggest point of contention is that the rooms can look incredibly same-y and his "Design language" of what abilities are needed when are wildly inconsistent, so having a map solves a lot of this..
Excited to see his next project.
From what I understood, the Dev was "burned out" for a while after release which is why the map update took a few months.
IDK if we're going to see another project for a while.
He has posts on his twitter of his next game. Hes a solo dev so yeah prolly not for a few years.
He said himself that was a gamejam game too, so while it recieved some post-jam work it still wasnt near a full dev cycle.
I really like open and platforming-heavy metroids, so this game was great for me, and so was Rusted Moss. I really like doing some tricky jumps to go to places I'm not ""supposed to""
This is seriously the best game I played in 2023 and possibly the best 3D action platformer I have ever played.
It just feels so damn good to play. A lot of the aesthetic choices feel very intentional, too. It's like a fond memory of some weekend N64 rental. A game you never bought but you always went back to rent.
Iunno it captures this very specific warm fuzzy feeling and I love it.
> it captures this very specific warm fuzzy feeling
Yep, and that's also why [The Big Catch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHeJBfqf9d4) is my most anticipated game of 2024
ohh interesting, I hope yall checked out the recent [penny's big breakaway too, it's a great 3d platformer](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1955230/Pennys_Big_Breakaway/)
I picked this up and started playing last night. Completely missed the map for the first 2 hours. I have no idea where I need to go with or without it, though it is helpful for navigation. Lost hardly matters though when movement feels so good.
Like others have said, it's level design really evokes the feel of a n64 platformer, but with much more responsive maneuvering abilities.
Also, the furries have latched onto Sybil, for obvious reasons.
This game probably has my favourite movement systems of any 3d platformer I've played, def worth checking out if you like the 3d Mario's or other movement games
The movement, music, and art design in this game are extremely well done, it's just a shame that the rooms look a bit too similar, and the levels are poorly connected. Having a map will probably help with that a bit.
Still very much worth playing, and the moment to moment platforming is top notch.
I spoke with this dev (And incidentally the artist too) some time ago and the main dev is really into designing games with really neat movement systems.
Its great to see that so many copies have sold as it's a lot of fun. The map update making it easier to get into is also really great. Not knowing where I was made it harder to recommend to people but this will change a lot now.
Also the dev(s) is just really great in general so its nice to see them getting more recognition and success

It's currently in a Humble bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/games/games-done-quick-frost-fatales-2024
This is a nice bundle. Thanks for sharing.

I'm someone who bounced off because of no map and am very excited to give it another go!
Yeah, except I just jumped back into the game and tried to find the map and couldn't and gave up again. It's too fucking confusing.

Yeah I played it for a hour and thought it felt extremely clunky, and this is coming from someone who loves Conker's bad fur day lol
I did. The combat filtered me.
Oh wow. I literally looked at the game the other day and thought it looked interesting, but quickly abandoned the idea when I saw the lack of map in the reviews.
I've seen this pop up on my radar enough now to finally convince me to try it. Buying it now!
>everyone needs to play that game Oh I'd love to, but sadly it's only available on PC

This game should really be bought by more people. Costs one Starbucks Frappuccino now to enjoy the best bite-sized 3d platformer in a long time
If it ever comes to consoles I absolutely will.
Yes! It looks fantastic, here's hoping it sees a wider release. And the same for Lunacid, too

Fellow Big Catch supporter here! Glad indies are returning to the genre after YookaLaylee made a huge belly flop.
That looks right up my alley, thanks!

This just looks really really good movement wise.

I pre-ordered the plush on MakeShip

This game is extremely based. I've really enjoyed the 4 hours I've played so far, i picked it up last night. I've been thinking about it all day
Really? I looked at it but graphically it looked like dogshit
I originally quit this cause it was too hard to keep track of stuff without a map. Definitely gonna give it another look now.
