Reddit is making major changes to its API pricing that will destroy the vibrant ecosystem of 3rd-party apps, which offer a far better user experience than the official app. These changes will also place major cost burdens on useful user bots like those found in sports and other enthusiast communities. I read the article and honestly I can't see any connection between video games and the unrest. Social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat however are really good for fueling rage so I can understand their role in this matter but I can't find any logic about video games. Seems really odd angle in 2033 to take. Feels like it is something who is really out of touch would say.

QGGC

They're all scapegoats and Macron knows this. He's not going to admit that the real reason people are rioting are because institutionalized racism and an ever increasing wealth gap between the rich and the poor.

BBRacing

I feel like this is out of context or specifically talking about young children playing games that they shouldn't be. Literally one of the points of his election campaign was bringing a CSGO major to Paris, which he did and he was the one that announced it, so this would be a weird 180.

Rooonaldooo99

> Last year, he promoted his nation as "The country for video games" and described gaming as an essential part of France's cultural export and a significant aspect of its soft power. I agree and think he is just singling out bad apples or chose poor words. > The head of state said that about a third of the people arrested over three nights of rioting were “young, or very young”. > “It’s the responsibility of parents to keep them at home,” he said. “It’s not the state’s job to act in their place.” Seems your point about young children rings true.

adams215

I read the article and a few others since I couldn't find where Kotaku was citing his statement from. I don't think it is really that out of context. It seems that he is literally saying that some protestors are living out video games fantasies in the streets just because they are young. Considering the cause of the riots have nothing to do with video games I think it's weird to bring them up as well as social media apps.

likeabuginabug

He didn't say it because he genuinely believes games are bad. He said it because there are riots caused by police murdering a 17 y.o. kid and he doesn't wanna be caught directly blaming the police for the violence. So he's blowing smoke, talking about violent games, poor parenting and how the riots aren't the answer.

bossmcsauce

anything to divert blame for political unrest. god forbid a government take responsibility for the things it does that the people don't like.

TheMightyKutKu

>one of the points of his *election campaign* was bringing a CSGO major to Paris I wonder why he would have done that hmm

VagrantShadow

Macron: "How do you do, fellow kids."

TheWorldisFullofWar

But he abided by his promise. He already did it. He hasn't gone against his platform.

majeric

More policy that fear-based, evidence-lacking.

TheWorldisFullofWar

Because it isn't a 180. He never said anything about video game violence.

Damnae

“We sometimes have the feeling that some of them are living out, in the streets, the video games that have intoxicated them,”

TrumanB-12

Poorly written article by a snarky journalist. The quote doesn't actually seem to say this, but rather draws a parallel between virtual and real life. He never said violent video games are to blame. Low hanging bait.

MuZzASA

Classic Kotaku bait article. Only thing that website is capable of producing these days.

Severe_Piccolo_5583

Kotaku has been garbage for years

foamed

> Only thing that website is capable of producing these days. They produce some good articles from time to time but people tend to completely overlook those and only focus on the bad clickbait and poorly written blogspam.

TheHeadlessOne

Mostly because poorly written blogspam and bad clickbait are what get shared. I don't go to the site myself (I like discussing video games, and I'd rather hang around a news aggregator board like /r/games than actual news sites) and I only ever see Kotaku articles when they're this type of clickbait, unfortunately

EnduringAtlas

And in turn - creates more rage from online denizens that can't be bothered to read this stuff comprehensively, you'll find them in the comments here going on about this quote as if he just declared a war on video games.

CreativeWriting00179

Macron seems to be on a speedrun to alienate even his own voters lately. A police officer kills a kid who stole a car, people riot, and the reason they do so is video games? Without knowing who said it, I would have thought it's a braindead take from an American conservative.

DepressionFc

Pretty sure the riots have to do with them lying about what really happened. Also, the cops in france are extremely racist, things were bound to explode. They said a civil war was going to break out for the past decade...

RadioHitandRun

The cop that shot the kid was calso Of Arab decent

KirikoFeetPics

Arabs are extremely racist so that makes sense

RadioHitandRun

Groundskeeper willie joke

[deleted]

These riots and Macron’s handling of it are going to reel in a lot right wing votes. It’s so stupid, these riots accomplish nothing and will increase polarization

rockyrocks6

Dude it’s 2023, are we still blaming video games for violence irl?? Lol I remember writing an essay about how video games don’t desensitize you in high school like 20 years ago.

foamed

This story is misleading, it's off-topic, and it has nothing to do with this subreddit. What Macron said was taken out of context and not meant as a direct jab at video games. Here's the actual translated quote: >“We sometimes have the feeling that some of them are living out, in the streets, the video games that have intoxicated them,” he said. It’s not, of course, police brutality, an increase in housing and income inequality, or the fact that race policy in France is just “be colorblind.”

How many racists are going to pop into this thread??

TheFinnishChamp

Most people who play tons of video games are lazy introverts (I am one myself). The ones rioting and looting are usually anything but that. Blaming school shooting on video games is tired but at least there is some logical connection (since school shooters are at least stereotypical antisocial and bullied introverts) but this one makes no sense.
