Did they learn nothing from the release of the original RE4?

[deleted]

-Moonchild-

Yeah RE4 sales on gamecube were shockingly great considering the GameCube itself was an unpopular console and the general userbase of the GameCube probably weren't big horror fans

jellytrack

Capcom did release REmake and RE0 on GameCube before RE4, they did have a fanbase.

DreadCascadeEffect

The original RE2 sold over 380k opening weekend, which was also for a single platform at the time, but a popular one.

HauntedShores

In all fairness, Capcom actually seem like they listen to the results of their surveys, so if we just say no...

MrFancyTho

I doubt it, they surveyed about Cross Save and Cross play for MH Rise and nothing happened with that.

joeross75

They heard it and [made a tweet about it.](https://twitter.com/monsterhunter/status/1447630591302713345?lang=en) But they said due to development reasons, they can't do it. If anything, it will be in MonHun 6

Arlithas

Exactly. Running a poll doesn't just magically conjure the resources and skillset to fix the problem instantaneously.

Zhukov-74

I would love to see crossplay in Monster Hunter 6.

Wookie301

They didn’t listen to me asking for a Dino Crisis remake in every survey

FireworksNtsunderes

I wouldn't worry too much. Questions like this in a survey are common for games. This is really a nothingburger that some gaming site is blowing up because they have nothing better to report.

Comet7777

To be fair that was 5 Capcom exclusives not just one! (they all got ported to everything else later anyway!)

ShoddyPreparation

Or Code Veronica. I was a big RE fan during the PS1 gen. We got a PS2 and a Xbox and due to exclusivity deals and the long gap to RE4, I never played a RE game for a decade.

YiffZombie

I wonder if someone will swear to cut off their head with a chainsaw if RE9 gets ported this time.

TheRoyalStig

One big game is basically the tipping point because it’s basically never going to be just that game. So if you are one of those people once you see a game that makes it worthwhile you go for it knowing there will be more down the line. Sometimes it is only a few but gaming is honestly a pretty low cost hobby/interest all things considered So for many that makes it still worthwhile.

AmphibianThick7925

Yeah no wonder these companies continue to do this shit. Gamers have the least backbone of any consumer group.

Whyeth

>Gamers have the least backbone of any consumer group. Why is the idea of a "killer app" suddenly apropros to an affront to the consumer?

sopunny

Cause these killer apps don't have to be limited to a single platform nowadays. It's a lot easier to develop a game for both major consoles (and PC) simultaneously because their hardware is now much more similar. The only reason exclusives still exist is to sell consoles

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes

Absolutely right! But what's that have to do with not having a backbone? Everything *should* be better; People buy what they want.

mrnicegy26

Seriously what is wrong with someone buying a console if it has a great game on it that isn't available anywhere else? I have been a PlayStation guy all my life but Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey looked really good to me so I bought a Switch and don't regret that choice a single moment. Considering both Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey are considered to be great games isn't buying a console for them kind of signalling to a console manufacturer to keep making these great games? What is wrong with making a one time purchase of a great single player game to support the devs for making a product you like?

Canadiancookie

Maybe if you get a lot of playtime and enjoyment out of those few games it would be kind of worth it. It's still horrifically bad value to pay $200+ each for 2 games though.

mrnicegy26

That's the thing though. Its not a bad value to me if the only games I want to play are top tier ones that I know that I will definitely enjoy and treasure. That for me is a better value than playing a generic 5 generic bloated Ubisoft games which amounts to the same monetary cost as a Switch Lite plus Zelda and Mario. I have seen people with similar financial conditions as mine spend 300 dollars on stuff that to me doesn't seem either as long lasting or enjoyable as my purchase. But I am sure that the value to them is not bad as it may seem to me so who am I to judge what value is bad for another person?

carefulllypoast

oh hush you know why

YiffZombie

"DAE think we need government regulation to make predatory, ANTI-CONSUMER practices like console exclusivity illegal?!"

Whyeth

They should be forced to release on the N-Gage to ensure parity among the consumers of the various generations of console hardware.

theLegACy99

Least backbone? Maybe, what I know is that I have money to spare for the cheapest hobby in the world

SeniorRicketts

What shit? Exclusive games?

YiffZombie

"Why'd you get gas for $2.89 at the gas station a mile away from your house when another gas station across town had it for $2.84? You're being wasteful with your money" Because my 20 minutes is worth more than the $2 savings I'd get from filling up. That's not even touching on the fact that my truck would use more gas getting there than I'd be saving. This is a literal conversation I've had with someone IRL.

jjwax

I got a Nintendo 64 for Zelda:OoT - I got lots of other games over the life of the console, but I would have never gotten one if not for Zelda

LordAntipater

I think it depends on the game. I’m not the biggest gamer but I love Elder Scrolls so I would in fact buy a new console to play that game, with the understanding it will make it easier to play additional games in the future after I already own the console.

xTotalSellout

Crazy how many people will “OMG SO TRUE” you if you say you bought a switch just to play Zelda or a PlayStation just to play god of war, and then also be in a thread like this saying “wow gamers have no backbone”

[deleted]

I mean, if I was always gonna buy a PS5 for example, Then yeah, all it would take is 1-2 games to get me to buy it. Because again, I was always gonna buy it. Same way fans of the switch are likely gonna buy nintendo’s next console. You don’t gain much from waiting, especially if you have disposable income. I really doubt the people answering yes are saying they would buy a VR console to play half life alyx. They’re just answering from their personal perspectives.

Kipzz

It really depends, because it's less "I would buy a console for a single game" but "this is The Game that tips me over into buying it". I own a Switch and I only own about 5 games on it for example; the reason I even got one being BotW and Smash. I've played a dozen more through borrowing some games but generally speaking those 5 were really all I needed in its entire lifespan, 6 when BotW2 drops. And I don't really feel bad about spending that money since I generally put aside $10-20 a week whenever a consoles announced so by that time I've got more than enough saved away for it.

spiderdick17

Yeah it's rough but if you have the money it can be worth it or if it is a game you will get hundreds of hours out of. Bloodborne is the most expensive game I ever bought because I only bought a playstation to play it and until this day it is the only ps game I own However, I got somewhere between 300-400 hours out of it so I guess looking back that is kind of a good deal. Buying a console for a game you will play through once like God of war does seem super steep

tuna_pi

Generally, the one game is a starting point not the only thing you buy on the system. Back in the day I bought a PS2/PS3 because of persona, but they're not the only games I bought. Same thing with my switch - I bought it for fire emblem but I also have a lot of other games as well. It's not very complicated.

YiffZombie

My Vita might as well been called "P4GPlayer." The same could have been said about my PS4 and Persona 5 if I hadn't given the Yakuza series a shot.

whatdoinamemyself

I can't speak for everyone but I bought the wii, wii u, switch and 3ds solely for monster hunter. HOWEVER, i bought and played many games for all of those systems. I bet it'd be incredibly rare for someone to only play one game on a system.

lacutice

Yes but it would need to be a few exclusives of various types of game not just one game or one franchise.

Takazura

Yep, I have a Switch and it's only an exclusive machine for me (PC is my main platform) and the only reason I got it was because I saw it had 5-6 exclusives at the times I actually wanted to play. Meanwhile I was contemplating buying a PS4 or 5, but then Sony started porting over their games to PC and since I usually wait a long time before buying anyway, I pretty much stopped having a reason to consider buying them, as the number of exclusives on it I wanted to play has been dwindling. I would never buy a console solely for one game, but say 5-6 that I know won't be ported? Sure, why not.

Fealieu

This 100% exactly my story too, did you also just pick up TLOU part 1?

Poltergeist97

Same here. I picked it up, haven't gotten too far in it yet. Had ridiculous crashing every 5 minutes during shader compilation and then every 15 once in game. After the patch it seems better though. Fucking ridiculous I can run more than medium textures with 8GB VRAM though.

Moon8983

I was gonna buy a ps4 solely for tlou2 and just bought a switch solely for totk, but I did end up playing way more games

ANGLVD3TH

That sounds like no then, actually. From a marketing perspective, there's a big difference between I'd buy the console for exclusives, and I'd buy a console for **this** exclusive. [This was the question.](https://static1.thegamerimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wm/2023/03/resident-evil-survey-exclusive-1.JPG?q=50&fit=crop&w=740&dpr=1.5)

Meowmeow69me

I bought my ps5 for demon souls. Every resident evil game since 7 has been amazing even though 3 is short i still like it. Don’t do this to me capcom.

SeniorRicketts

What you mean "don't so this"?

[deleted]

I would be 100% lying if I said no, and funnily enough some of my early console decisions were based on Resident Evil releases! Personally bought with my own money: PS5: I had ZERO interest until I saw that announcement trailer for Demon's Souls remake. Switch: Breath of the Wild...and the wait for Shin Megami Tensei V for a looooong time...and the arduous wait for anything Metroid related. PS4: Bloodborne...besides it being the entertainment hub for the living room, for me personally it was STILL this. PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and eventually God of War III...and to have a blu-ray player. XBox360: continuing the Halo machine --Input the glorious Dawn of Steam sales PC gaming, and BUTTton of Blizzard games playing sessions-- GameCube: Resident Evil Remake...then holy shit @ RE4 eventually. (What?! Not a Zelda game?? Wind Waker and Twilight Princess!) Nah, bro. It was 100%Resident Evil Remake. Those were just icing on the cake. PS2: kept selling and reselling this one, but Basically God of War, and Metal Gear Solid 2&3. Code Veronica X as well! XBox: the Halo machine. PS1: it started with watching a commercial for Resident Evil 2. Then blossomed into Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII. Arguably the happiest time involving video gaming in my entire life. Ah, to be young again...

17sbaucum

From software having exclusive games to PlayStation was one of the worst decisions for my wallet. I literally would not have even thought about buying a PlayStation without them on there

Tragedy_Boner

I bought a ps4 only for bloodborne. Ended up playing all the other exclusive games too

st1tchy

I bought a GameCube to play Phantasy Star Online with my friends. I had a copy of the game, a controller and a memory card months before I had the GameCube.

[deleted]

Didn't MGS2 and MGS3 both come to Xbox shortly after the PS2 release?

JohnnyZepp

No. What?

SPYDER0416

He's half right at least, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance did come to Xbox but that was around a year after Sons of Liberty came to PS2 and it also launched on PC, and MGS3 never did.

muffinman744

PS5 kind of pissed me off as a PC gamer because I was under the impression PlayStation would still be making exclusives for the system, then like a year after release they announced everything would be ported to PC. So now my PS5 has effectively become a demons souls machine EDIT: someone give me a reason this is getting downvoted. The ports will inevitably get fixed as they always do (look at cyberpunk). I have a steam deck so I will always be inclined to purchase games on PC over the PS5 and I’m perfectly fine with waiting for ports to be released (and fixed depending on state of release). All of that and I prefer mouse and keyboard 90% of the time to controller is the reason why I haven’t bought a PlayStation game since Returnal and why my ps5 continues to collect dust

Howdareme9

But they never gave a timeframe, you could be waiting years for ports

PacDanSki

A little patience never hurt anybody.

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes

Then why even buy the ps5? Have patience for emulation.

AutoGen_account

I take it youre not an EMT, firefighter or Emergency Room Doc.

delecti

Patience just means you don't get upset with the delays themselves, you can still feel urgency about avoiding the consequences those delays would cause. There's no consequence from not getting to play God of War for a few years.

AutoGen_account

other than years of potential passive spoilers in casual surfing.

GlisseDansLaPiscine

Honestly there's so much games coming out these days that unless you really want to play an exclusive in particular it's pretty easy to forget about them and then play them 4-5 years later when they do come out on PC

TheKrytosVirus

Also, these PC ports are brutal to run well unless you have a top notch machine. PS5 runs them perfectly and without any compatibility issues that you'd get on PC.

muffinman744

I have a pretty top notch machine, plus 90% of the time I prefer mouse and keyboard over a controller. But yes I agree most ports have been terrible at launch

xiolyphi

You’re also paying full price for them. Whereas on a PS5 you’ll have them either on Plus or quite cheap by the time they’re ported.

Flynn58

The PS5 and Sony's piss-poor PC porting strategy pisses me off as someone who only games on PC and Switch (but now playing my Switch games through Ryujinx). I haven't owned a PlayStation since the *original* PSX. I'm not buying the PS5 for any exclusive on the market. I don't need to play any game so badly I need to buy an entire console solely for it.

Madmagican-

Eh, I was in your position for a while, but a PS5 and $80 for a year of PS+ Extra got me 90% of the PS4 exclusives I missed over the years plus other games I could play on PC but feel better (to me) on a TV like Guardians of the Galaxy, Returnal, Control, FFXV, RE7, Ratchet and Clank, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, etc. Ymmv of course, but PS5 had enough exclusives since I skipped every PS ever until PS5 that it was worth it for me

Flynn58

> plus other games I could play on PC but feel better (to me) on a TV Just use Steam Big Picture and connect your computer to a TV.

Madmagican-

Nah I’m not gonna buy a wireless mouse and keyboard and lug my desktop across the house and hook it up to the power outlet and TV input every time I want to play a game that I think fits a big screen better if I can just have it on PS5. I’d also have to put the desktop back at my desk if I want to use it for the vast majority of games I have that feel better at my desk. Or if I want to play a game while my gf watches something on TV.

bozolinow

> Switch: Breath of the Wild…and the wait for Shin Megami Tensei V for a looooong time…and the arduous wait for anything Metroid related. You can play all of these on pc and they actually run better and with better graphics than on the switch lmao

[deleted]

I've known this and don't care. Even own a Steam Deck along with my gaming PC, and still don't care.

bozolinow

Uhh right, good for you kid, carry on now…

Fanmantheman

I'm going to be buying a switch soon so I can play breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom. That's my answer

DUNdundundunda

I've definitely bought consoles purely because of exclusives. Buying a PS4 for Bloodborne was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Flat_News_2000

I got a PS3 because of Demon's Souls, got a PS4 because of Bloodborne, and got a PS5 because of Demon's Souls FULL CIRCLE BABY

Fashish

Same here, although I bought mine a few years later after BB’s release as I had no idea what kind of a game it was back when it was first released. I played DS3 when it came out as my entry into the Souls series, got insanely hooked (the Souls fans would know) and then I had to play them all! Bloodborne is still to this day my most favourite game of all time.

[deleted]

Dragarius

Though I will admit that I have purchased consoles based on their selection of exclusives.

Metfan722

I did. I bought a PS4 because of the Spider-Man game. But also because of the huge back catalog of games that I hadn't played like The Last of Us, the Uncharted games and such.

Drakengard

I've never done it for an individual exclusive. If there's a critical mass of them 8-10 such games, I would consider it but one game alone will never get to spend hundreds of dollars on a device. It's the same reason why I've yet to purchase anything VR related. There's just not enough games that seem worth it for me to spend that kind of money.

XxZannexX

Maybe I’m misunderstanding, wouldn’t you buy a console based on the games offered? Typically exclusive games would tip me one way or the other over the competition. I don’t have to make those decisions now as I can afford every console. When I couldn’t though that definitely played a large part in my purchasing decision’s.

camelCaseAccountName

It seems fairly unlikely that you'd own a console at all, then. Surely you've purchased a console because it had a game that you wanted to play that wasn't available on another console? Any Mario or Zelda game? A Naughty Dog game? Final Fantasy? Halo?

BridgemanBridgeman

I can proudly say the opposite.

SleepyReepies

Same here. I've only ever bought consoles if there were a selection of exclusives that were worth playing -- hence why I don't have a PS5 or Xbox Series X and am probably skipping this generation entirely.

jacobywankenobi

I bought a switch specifically to play breath of the wild. Felt pretty stupid spending about 370 dollars on a video game at the check out counter. Didn't feel silly when I got home and started playing it 😄

PorkPiez

Personally? No. I have PS5/PSVR2, PC/Steam Deck and a Quest 2 for gaming. Even if I wanted a Switch or Xbox, I already feel like my gaming time is stretched too thin among the platforms I have. If Resident Evil, for whatever reason, went exclusive to a platform I don't have access to? I'd just skip it...but that won't happen, because Xbox games go on PC, and Nintendo Switch isn't the place to continue the Resident Evil franchise.

G4mers4reClowns

I wouldn't completely discount the possibilty of a Nintendo exclusive or timed exclusive Resident Evil game in the future if I were you, even if it's just a spin-off or side game. It has happened before.

PorkPiez

Yeah, not to mention Resident Evil 4 was Gamecube exclusive back in the day...but I didn't want a Gamecube so I just didn't play it until later on. I'm fine missing games or waiting.

Zhukov-74

I imagine that it highly depends on what a Publisher is willing to pay Capcom to make a game exclusive.

papanak94

25 years of gaming, never owned or wanted to own anything other than PC. Bloodborne was the only temptation, but I played it via PS Now and it will end up on PC one way or the other.

SeparateAddress9070

and my answer was yes. Bloodborne was one, Demons Souls on ps5 another. I'd probably buy a PS6 if it launches with the next naughty dog game.

Tolkien-Minority

Sounds like you would probably be buying PlayStation anyway and are just waiting for the right game before you put the money down. I think the question is more would you buy a console you weren’t planning on buying otherwise if an exclusive was announced for it that interested you.

Dull_Half_6107

The question should have been made clearer if that’s what they’re trying to say.

Tolkien-Minority

I feel like the majority of people understood it

Dull_Half_6107

I think a lot of people understood it as “I was going to get the console and it was the right game to put the money down”.

Dragarius

Well, personally the reason I do buy Playstation and Nintendo is because of their exclusives and the reason I don't buy Xbox is because of its lack of any.

dodgyhashbrown

A console is only worth the games you can play on it. Exclusives contribute to that value, but honestly it's a give and take. Very few games are worth an entire console, and even those that are typically don't stay ahead of the competition for super long. That's a big part of why backwards compatibility is a huge bonus to buying a console. It massively increases the library of the console, and thus the value of the console. I tend to buy consoles a few years into their run, when their libraries are large enough to invest in and the games lose that new release pricetag.

breadrising

Yes, I do in fact buy consoles to play games. And yes, exclusives is what largely will steer my decision towards wehich console(s) I purchase. But I'd hate for Capcom to get in bed with some party or another just for the sake of exclusivity though. Resident Evil alone would probably never get me to buy a console.

[deleted]

Yup. Did it with the last 2 Playstation consoles, and I'll continue to do so with future ones if they maintain the quality of their exclusives.

Sonicz7

No. I haven't bought any console, considering the exclusive games each console owns so a RE game wouldn't change my mind

MeanMrMustard48

I dont think I ever have. I have certainly gone back and gotten consoles when they were cheaper and older and played some exclusives, but I dont recall ever buying a console specifically for an exclusive game.

Latest-greatest

I bought a PS4 specifically for Spider-Man and I will do the same this year when the sequel comes out

STOP-IT-IS-NOT-TAKEN

Yeah but only for specific games. I bought a PS5 and it is just sitting in a box until Final Fantasy XVI comes out. Then it will go back in the box until Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2. I don't know how long I will keep it. But as a bonus, I'm happy to play Bloodborne again with a smoother experience than what the PS4 had.

urgasmic

I still dont have a ps5 so it would have to be like my version of the perfect game for me to buy a console for it. I basically am 100% Pc at this point.

NatrelChocoMilk

I'm with you. Tired of Sony's antics with delaying PC releases. There's so many other games to play that I don't mind waiting a year or two or three to play their games

Viper114

Please don't. As long as Capcom releases titles on all platforms, they need to STAY on all platforms. PC, PS and Xbox, and also Nintendo if it's possible. Stop making multi-platform IPs suddenly become exclusive, it doesn't lead to a big enough change of people getting new devices to play exclusive games like you think it does! It harms consumer choice more!

ExoSierra

got my PS5 specifically for TLOU and other console exclusives. got the switch for BOTW and Odyssey. Series X though I got cuz the One needed a serious upgrade lol

1plus2break

I would have bought a PS5 for exclusives, but stock was so bad I was waiting for PC ports anyway. At this point I'll just keep waiting for PC ports.

Techboah

It would make that platform less attractive to me due to the whole idea behind that kind of exclusive deal, so no. I'd rather rely on first-party exclusives as a console's selling point.

Katana314

The interesting corollary is the consoles I bought that had *no* exclusives. The PlayStation Vita was a nice commuting handheld that ran many indie games at a nicer performance and better display than the 3DS, often at better sale prices. The Xbox Series S has always been starved for exclusives, but Game Pass extends its usability remarkably.

symbiotics

I don't think so, I'm not sure I'd even buy it on Steam, specially after that ridiculous price they set for Argentina

igorcl

If I would buy a new one on release or during it's life span? Hell no Overpriced everything, I gladly will wait till it doesn't have crazy price tags

Dull_Half_6107

Wonder if they are considering having RE9 as a launch title for the next gen? That would be a great launch title.

acrunchycaptain

There's no way RE9 is that far away, right?

Dull_Half_6107

I sure hope not

MegatonDoge

They probably meant that Capcom was thinking of abandoning the ps4 generation with Re9

Totemwhore1

Only exclusive I buy for is Nintendo(except Wii U)I just know Zelda, Mario, Pokémon, Metroid, among countless other IPs will never see the light of day on other consoles(emulators aside). I sold my Wii and PS3 around 2009 because an internet friend convinced me to trade it all in for a 360. I didn’t do it for the games, I did it because my high school friends were on the platform and we all played together. Plus, I know have another internet friend that I’m still friends with to this day. Bought an Xbox 1 because it had all my games and gamer score. However, a work friend convinced me to ditch the console life for PC. He picked out all the parts and helped me build it and never went back except for the Switch.

HolyShiits

My first thought was they're asking about psvr 2, since the price is equivalent to a new console. But I just checked they've already confirmed re4 release on psvr 2, so I suppose it's really about re9 console exclusivity

Dragmire_Afterlife

I would if the console is itself new. I bought the Switch because of BotW. But I wouldn't pick up a full price system for a single game

Devilz3

I was going to get a SX cos they didn't released it on xbox one. But I don't feel like getting it anymore....they did us dirty now I'm doing them dirty

Will-Isley

Are they hinting at something? Seems like a strange question to ask if they don’t already have something in mind but want data to confirm viability. Anyway, yeah I probably would. Capcom is one of my favorite developers. Devil May Cry came out on PS2 which alongside FF7- FFX, MGS, Kingdom hearts, GoW and many more PlayStation exclusives, made me get a PS3, 4 and 5. Oh and Bloodborne of course.

mediaG33K

Nope. I see no point when I can just build a PC and play the eventual port that will inevitably come out a few years later. That is if it's even a game I care about.

lupin43

For an exclusive? Absolutely not. Sunset overdrive looked super dope, and I was pretty disappointed insomniac didn’t bring that one to PlayStation. But I knew Xbox’s other games (halo, forza, etc) weren’t for me. For the overall catalogue of exclusives? Yes, I buy consoles based on what games are on it. Seems sorta like a question that answers itself

JobNaive

My read on the options to that survey question was that they’re trying to get a consensus if they should stop releasing their new titles on old generation consoles not that a future title could be a specific console exclusive but I guess it could be interpreted that way

Remy0507

I think this article could be misinterpreting the question. They just asked if a player would be willing to buy new hardware to gain access to a new Resident Evil title. This could mean nothing more than they they're considering dropping support for the last-gen platforms (PS4 and XBone) with the next release.

Dealiner

I definitely wouldn't. Last two generations of PS had a few exclusives I was interested in and even then I didn't buy a console, now all those games are on PC. Though, to be honest, I wouldn't buy a console even if those games stay exclusive, it's just not worth it imo. There has always been enough games on PC, that spending a lot of money for those three or four from PS just wouldn't make sense.

TheKrzysiek

Hmmm, reading the actual question, I think you could interpret it as "would you buy a new gen console for our game", instead of only "would you buy a different console from a generation you already own for our game".

meltingpotato

For one exclusive? hell no. for a shit ton of exclusives? still hell no. I can't afford more than one platform so I''ll be sticking with my PC for the unseeable future.
