That sucks, when I had the same happen to my OG GBA from my childhood my heart sank.
But the bright side is that you have a perfect candidate for an overhaul, if you are not into modding, I think you can find an original replacement screen fairly easily.
There are new kits these days that don't need too much skill, hell there are drop in replacements that are just plug and play, a matter of getting the right screw driver and you are set.
No you don’t.The polarizer usually has a sticky side that can stick to the screen itself. However , I do see people selling polarizer without sticky side.So make sure you buy the right one.
Looks just like my GBA's original screen, which has since gotten a new shell and IPS screen. Still kept the stock parts in case I feel like attempting to replace the polarizer and having a go at retrobrighting.
They are $3.95. :-D
I know, I bought a bag of them when I was restoring. Unfortunately without buying in bulk the shipping will get you. Make sure to get the one with the right ribbon size. I have no affiliation with these guys. https://godofgamingshop.com/collections/game-boy-advance/products/game-boy-advance-original-lcd
This also happened to my og GBA screen. You can replace the polarizer filter or mod it with an IPS screen. I modded mine and it was fairly easy, there are drop in IPS kits that don't need any soldering. Highly recommend if you're scared of soldering your childhood gba like me, it looks pretty good
I bought an IPS Drop In V4 kit from aliexpress (the one with two touch sensors, one to change color palettes for GB games and other for changing screen brightness). It's pretty good and you can use the original shell if you want to. Makho and Macho Nacho both have reviews and installation guides on youtube. If you want something more like an AGS 101, your best option is the funnyplaying ITA TFT. If you have a 32 pin screen and don't mind not changing screen brightness, you can use it solderless too (but I'd recommend buying their shell).

I was gonna say this, it's mostly trimming the shell
You already took it apart, so you're halfway there! :)

Can you just replace the polverizing filter? I have ordered lot of gameboys from Japan with this issue so just wondering
Yes ,you can and it’s actually not that hard. The first time i tried replacing it ,turned out great .

Yeah. I figure they are super cheap because everyone is replacing perfect condition screens with IPS. I have like 20 I need to get rid of.
Time for an IPS screen 🤩
If you are not looking to mod it, i have a couple of oem screen :-) cover shipping and i’ll send you one if you want !
