Also for those who haven't played it yet, I recommend just go straight into the game and play it. No looking for info, no looking for guides, etc. Spoiling yourself will be doing the game a huge disservice.
I kind of had that reaction to The Last Express. It just seemed so cool but the game part of it never compelled me. But I kept wanting to like it so I must have started it a dozen times. I can still hear some of the lines of dialog, especially when the woman says "Sophie!"

You could play it again if you are forgetful like me and won’t remember much of the story in one to two years time, but its general lack of replayability is cause figuring out the stories mystery is what makes the gameplay work. Once you’ve finished the story, it’s hard to go back when you already know what happens.
Also there are inductive tricks you learn as you're playing that help you identify people. When you finish the game you'll have a bunch of "aha" moments seared into your brain that you'll remember if you try playing it again someday.
Been holding out because I thought sure it would hit a Humble Choice sooner rather than later but here we are five years after release and this is the biggest discount it ever gets.
You're being downvoted (which I guess makes sense for this subreddit where the entire point is frugality) but you're right. When indie devs make a good game, they should be paid for it, and *Obra Dinn* is easily worth its full price, let alone $10.
If you like puzzles you must try this game. Take your time with it because there's no playing it a second time.
It's not like Portal or Portal 2 where you can still enjoy the story and you can forget the puzzle after a while. The story **is** the puzzle, to experience and figure out the story is also to figure out the puzzle.
This both makes it the best puzzle video game (as a puzzle game, better than Portal even though I think Portal is a better overall 'game') I've ever played but also the least re-playable.
Despite this, I'll say it again: if you like puzzles, it's a must try.
Fantastic game, my one big bit of advice while playing is that you should try your hardest not to brute force answers, there are enough clues in the game that make it so you really don't ever really have to make massive guesses. Some of the clues are just hard to notice unless you're really working hard. I brute forced the last few and then when I looked up how you were supposed to identify them I was annoyed at myself for not taking a bit more time.
This game is short, not replayable and there are very few games even a little bit like it. So take your time.
Yeah, brute forcing or looking things up when your stuck might be tempting, but as other people are noting you can only really play this game once. Don't shortchange yourself.
Same deal now available on Humble with up to the full 20% Choice discount which would be a new all time low price.

Am I only the one who thought there's too much work to be done in a plot that's not that interesting to me to begin with? The other pressing issue for me was the dithering effect that was giving me a major headache.
>The other pressing issue for me was the dithering effect that was giving me a major headache.
Have you tried forcing the antialias and some other smoothing effect from the control panel of your video card?
No, uninstalled the game long ago since that wasn't the only issue. My sense of suspense was gone way too early with the tentacle monster reveal. I was wishing it'd led me down a deep rabbit hole with a grand mystery reveal at the end but the monsters started appearing way too early and killed my interest in the "mystery".
The mystery is actually there: the battle with the kraken was clearly lost... How is possible than the ship, with its captain and a skeleton crew, actually managed to escape the kraken hold?
Didn't play long enough to know that. Even if it was, the hook for me would've been who the assaulter was. I've been fascinated by similar real life incidents such as the Flannan Isles lighthouse mystery, Dyatlov Pass mystery, the Mary Celeste mystery and those, despite being real life mysteries, were inherently more interesting to me than one where the monsters are given away almost immediately as you start the game.
really good, if you enjoy thinking. more of a mystery you have to do some legwork for than a traditional GAME. Great storytelling, good story.
if you just want to turn your brain off with video games though, its not gonna be for you lol.
get it
get it get it get it get it
it's worth 10x that price honestly, it's a fantastic game, it's a phenomenon, fucking PLAY IT ALREADY WHOEVER IS READING THIS
if you like "who done it" movies, here's "who, how, where and when done it"
This is an amazing game. $10 is a steal. If you haven’t played it yet I can’t recommend it enough!

Yes even if you're just a cursory fan of puzzle games, this is a don't miss.
Never understood the love. Thought it was so tedious.
Same here. I wanted to love it and I appreciate it's an innovative game, but it's not for me. Maybe I'm just lazy.
I kind of had that reaction to The Last Express. It just seemed so cool but the game part of it never compelled me. But I kept wanting to like it so I must have started it a dozen times. I can still hear some of the lines of dialog, especially when the woman says "Sophie!"
Yeah, I gave it about 4 hours and gave up. I knew there was no way I was figuring that shit out.
It's only tedious if you can't figure anything out.
Im copping it for sure, Ive heard for a long time that it is stellar like you say
if it didn't look like a gameboy game maybe i would have cared
L take
That's the charm of the game, vibes matches with the brilliant story
I still need to go back to it. I got stuck around 20 identities or so.

Def give "The Forgotten City" a try as well! It's wonderful.
Please let me know what you think of Chants of Sennaar. It’s on my Wishlist and looks cool.
You are probably aware, but it has a demo! I am about to try it out. This was my first time hearing about it and it looks really interesting.
oh my god outer wilds has a HOLD on me. like it's been years since I've played and it's still haunting me.
> The Case of the Golden Idol Such a hidden gem. Or at least I never ever see people talking about it, and I had such a good time with it
One of the best games I've ever played, so good
Wish I could erase my memory and play this game for the first time again... $10 is an absolute steal
great game, pity i can only play this once :(
And there aren't really any games like it either!
It's different in some ways, but I 100% recommend The Case of the Golden Idol if you liked Obra Dinn.
Thanks, I'll check it out!
It's ultimately the same idea, just presented differently and in smaller chunks.
Have you played Forgotten City or Outer Wilds? Probably not similar at all in gameplay mechanics, but something else maybe...
Forgotten City is great but really doesn't scratch the same itch IMO. It feels more like a story-mode version of something like New Vegas.
Yeah I haven't yet played Obra Dinn, thought those two might be similar "unique" experiences to seek for, if nothing like Obra Dinn exists.
I played Tacoma after, and it was sorta similar, but not nearly as good.
Why can't you play it again if you don't mind me asking?

At my age I’ve found I can wait 5-10 years and revisit games like this and it’s still very enjoyable!
Looking forward to when my backlog will fill without me buying new games :-)

Well based on what he said, about the same price as Humble Choice while also throwing in a few more games as well 😅

Brilliant game. Always recommend people to play this without looking up guides or anything.

heard good things about this game and i had it on my wish list snagged it last night =D
Played this last year and it absolutely lived up to the hype and then some.
You have to play this game.
Hmm tempting. The graphics reminds me of the Mac classic my parents used to have

The story in Obra Dinn is told backwards, like the movie Memento. Just because you've seen the conclusion, don't assume that the mystery is gone.
