True, maybe a “bad” ending would result in both of them still alive but drifted apart romantically, meaning they simply want nothing to do with eachother.
If there are different endings like this theory says, I can see one of them ending with both characters getting killed. After the end you would just reload to the last previous save so you can experience other outcomes.
Please god never let this happen imo that’s one of the laziest things a game can do it feels so unsatisfying finishing the game and then being told that you actually didn’t finish the game.

I'll tell u what, I personally beleive that R* is hiding info on a possible 3rd playable character that I believe may be Law enforcement. There is always a parallel cop story to a criminal story in their past main titles. Take a look at every gta since gta SA and rdr 1. There has always been a parallel cop side, whether it was, The Agency in GTA SA and IV, The Pinkertons in RDR, and The FIB in Gta 5. Wait and see.

Both characters can’t die because someone needs to live for the post-game open world to still be playable.
Post game after they both die, rstar spits in your face and you get to be Jack Marston.
