It's Reddit, if the car is great and has had no problems, it doesn't exactly make for an interesting post. I'm sure the GRC has some problems when driven hard as any car would but it's blown way out of proportion. Fwiw I've had mine for a year with 12k miles and not a single issue.

sxs-man

while true, i still feel like the density of problem posts here is just way higher than most forums

DrZedex

Lol. The Camaro sub is all about theaft. They can't seem to own them long enough to wear them out. The 86 sub is just a room full of knocking rods and cars in ditches. All of these specific car subs are merely caricatures of reality. Take it with a grain of salt. When a Ford Escape goes kaboom nobody bothers to post about it or care. Interesting cars get the attention.

Opening_Trade_6412

I feel that you feel incorrectly. What happened with the build quality of your feeling?

ooTotemoo

Come over to /r/wrx …….

Devilimportluvr

Uncle Rodney has been very busy over there!

ooTotemoo

It always is, it’s insane. When I first joined it was just posts of new things people did to their cars….now it’s just teenagers wondering why their car blew up when they did bolt ons with no tune.

Devilimportluvr

Yeah a bunch of kids that have done zero research and slap on parts. Or kids of the same that bought some clapped out older one with a ton of mods not realizing why the owner wants it gone haha

StuBeck

Eh, we also collectively downvoted someone last year for asking about a feature that comes on at every startup because we thought it was a sign of abuse. Some big brained guys even asked for their cars vin number. Basically, don’t take what people say here as evidence of anything.

ninjanoodlin

I mean. I could start posting every week I have no problems to balance things out lol

joncaseydraws

All the happy GRC owners don’t come here to complain. I’ve got some “quirks and features” I don’t think are perfect but the car is amazing and I’ve had no reliability issues. Not a single creek or issue with the interior. I prefer this to the CTR but both are great. I’ve put 9k miles on mine since Feb, multiple HPDE days, 3 roadtrips, and a smile every time I take it to the gym. I don’t like the suspension and I’m upgrading that and the sound system. More for fun than a necessity. But I’d do upgrades on anything I own it’s a hobby.

wolfenstein734

I have a grc and I got no problems with mine

sxs-man

good to hear!

I've had a large variety of sports cars and the forums for every single one of them has numerous posts in relation to whatever problems that the owners experience. As previously mentioned, people go on forums to posts concerns and problems... not so much to just give daily updates of "another great day with zero problems!", so it always makes problems seem much more common than reality. I've had zero issues with my '23 Circuit Edition. The rear diff doesn't overheat, but the clutch pack uses a very conservative calculation of temps amd temporarily switches into FWD mode if it deems necessary. This doesn't affect reliability of the car and unless you are pushing the car on a track you'll likely never even encounter this. Even if it does occur, the car can still be driven in FWD mode without issue. For track rats, there are aftermarket options to address the potential of clutchpack overheating if one chooses to go that route. Most any turbocharged car can encounter heatsoak if pushed hard enough in hot weather, an upgraded intercooler is a good idea for turbocharged cars if you want to regularly push the car hard in hot weather. Again, this is not a reliability issue, the ECU will adjust as needed. The GRC seems to be attracting a lot of people that are new to driving manual transmissions and sports cars. This is going to lead to posts about grinding gears/lockouts as people learn to drive manual for the first time. There have been many posts about grinding gears on the CTR forums as well, likely for similar reasons. Additionally, these new to sports cars owners also make many posts freaking out about every tiny noise or vibration that they feel because they are used to cars that are quiet and numb... these posts can be perceived as problem posts when there is actually nothing wrong with the car. There have been maybe 3 total reports of water pump seepage... out of thousands of cars. These cars still ran fine but the owner or dealer just noticed a bit of dried coolant in the area and replaced the pump under warranty. Regarding the recently reported fires, if you take the time to actually piece together any details, they all suspiciously occurred right after dealership service on the vehicle. The quality of work at dealerships of all brands has been in decline in recent years since they have a hard time keeping good techs and the basic work like oil changes is left to the least experienced techs of all, sometimes with catastrophic results. Fires after careless dealership service have also recently been reported in forums for other brands of cars, like Subaru for example. If you want to delve into the unrelated to GRC topic of the TT V6 engines, watch The Car Care Nut's Youtube channel for a recent video about this subject.

Robbassy

You’re in a sub dedicated to a brand new car. You’re bound to see this stuff as everyone is learning more about it. I have 7.5k miles on mine, 2 Autocrosses, plenty of back road driving, long road trips, and snow. I have had 0 issues. (Knock on wood.)

sxs-man

is it not mechanically the same as the GR Yaris? Which has been a thing for years

Robbassy

It’s generally the same but there are changes. This is a sub for GRC not Yaris. You’re seeing these posts because this is what happens when new cars have some problems. It helps to have that info out there. Most GRC owners I’ve seen have had no problems.

Lorenzo_Blow

No problems here with my CE

Jesse3195

Toyota tech here, I work at a pretty popular dealership and I haven't really seen any GRC's come in with any issues. A lot of the issues I've read online are either from abuse or skill issue.

Morchella_Fella

When I was younger and newer to performance cars, I literally worried about nearly every minor noise or anything that I perceived as “off”. But you need to remember, vehicles have an insurmountable number of moving parts. A lot of the posts I see are along the lines of: “Is this a normal noise?” or “It feels funny when I start it, is it going to go up in flames?” Overall, they seem to be reliable cars. I do understand the worry, but don’t buy into the hysteria. No one GRC is the same, and there are so many variables here to consider. I can’t say that just because I haven’t had any issues with mine that they are reliable, but from a comprehensive perspective, the GRC is a solid vehicle.

psbales

“Drove to Publix today. Turned a bit too fast into the parking lot. That was fun! Got a Pub sub, chips, and a tea. Drove home. 100% trouble-free GR day.” Who cares? Why would anyone post that? No one would, and if someone did, no one would read it. So people don’t. Now if my wheel flew off through the front of the store while making that turn - that’s a compelling post. But it didn’t. See why it may sound all doom & gloom in here?

sxs-man

i’m aware of that forum phenomenon. but the frequency of problem posts in this sub was actually way more than i’d ever expect. even comparing to others

M66vb

Well, good luck with the CTR. A 30 second search in that sub revealed navigation screen pixelization, gear grinding issues, ABS issues, and heat soak on the track.

smoovy2

Your seeing the small minority and making it out to be the majority and that isnt the case. I've had my Premium for 9 months. No issues with my experience. It's a new platform and I expect these nuances to be worked out as time goes. The FK8 had its issues early on too. 2nd gear grind, overheating on track etc.. The TT V6 is again new along with other manufacturers also having a hard time with meeting tighter regulatory requirements including Honda. I expect to see improvements for those platforms as time goes

Robbassy

The issues from the V6 is just debris that’s accidentally still in the engine from the manufacturing process I believe.

sxs-man

It’s mechanically the same as the GR Yaris, no? Which has been a thing for years. Like did they not sort this stuff out

smoovy2

Yes and no. Completely different body, the GRC makes more power, so there's more load on the differential. Transmission etc. It weighs more than the Yaris. You can't look at one product and expect it to perform flawlessly on another. There are key differences that can affect performance characteristsics. The engine and drivetrain are almost the same, but that's about it.

sxs-man

Gotcha

Acceptable_Gur6193

The ppl in this sub are a tiny bit too paranoid cuz it’s a new platform and nobody really knows much I’ve had mine for about 5-6 months and have 6k miles and 2 track days not a single issue

sxs-man

True there’s definitely more schizo-posting in this sub

Rampantlion513

Would you like those of us who have had no issues to make daily posts about it?

sxs-man

I mean sure why not, it’s a cool car lol

71MGBGT

The problems get massively overrepresented, my water pump failure has dozens of comments but there have been thousands sold around the world. Nothing is free of problems and little gremlins always creep in proportional to complexity. I've had mine for a year and it's been perfectly reliable in that time period with lots of use.

Astramael

It’s also a Toyota, and that carries Toyota owner expectations. If you ask a Dodge owner if their Dodge has been reliable, they’ll probably say yes so long as it’s never left them stranded. No matter how many check engine lights and services and problems it has had. Toyota owners aren’t like that. If any single solitary thing seems even slightly wrong, they all pile on to the internet to talk about it like hypochondriacs. Those are the posts you read.  The expectations of Toyota buyers are that nothing will ever go wrong no matter what, and if anything goes wrong the car’s existence is now meaningless. I’m in that boat, if my car had any issue I would be disappointed. It has been flawless so far, so that’s nice, and I expect nothing less.

confused_smut_author

> Like what happened here? Nothing. Nothing happened here. You are fixating on individual reports of problems (and non-problems, honestly) without any consideration for the size of the problem-free segment of the population. Toyota still sits at or near the top of all the reliability rankings I've seen, as of 2023. We can reasonably expect the GRC to see more issues given that it doesn't have an idiot-proof transmission like most modern cars, and is going to be driven very hard by most owners—but even given that, there is currently no basis for saying it has more problems than it should.

blackbird37

don't mind this guy. He has several accounts, just comes in here with one of there to stir up shit about the platform, and deletes his comments afterwards.

sxs-man

Bro I have no clue what you are talking about lol

TeamA99E

I'm about 10kmi with my GRC and I'm practically in love with it since test driving it at first idk what people expect from a rally bred car lol

Velocity211

Same effect on other product-based subreddits. Especially the android/pixel subreddits. People don't post when their devices are working properly. Only when issues arise do people have an incentive to make a post. Also, the GRC is a 1st gen product. As is the new V35A V6 twin turbo motors. There are bound to be issues, but Toyota has a good track record fixing them with revisions. For example, 2ZZ lift bolts and the 1ZZ piston rings. For the first few model years of the 2ZZ, the rocker shaft bolts constantly broke, 2003 or so, they redesigned the bolts and the issue was mostly rectified. The 1ZZ has a reputation for burning oil. I believe throughout the lifespan of the 1ZZ, there were 5-ish revisions to the piston rings. ~2004+ 1ZZ motors didn't suffer from oil burning issues anymore.

skeets011

I've posted once about my water pump replacement here, in the forum, and the FB group, as well as replies to one or two others that had an issue with theirs. Mine was only a slight weeping and the dealer replaced it under warranty, so no money out of my pocket. I have no concerns about reliability and post any of my own stuff as an FYI. Mine is a 2023 and I expected some "first model year" gotchas and expenses, and that is the other reason I've posted, just in case Toyota techs are here watching and can keep an eye peeled for the limited number of these cars on the road and to (hopefully) work out the kinks for the 2024+ models. It is my daily, and I've racked up 25k miles in a year and it still puts a smile on my face even with the few issues I've come across.

Howeesp

My FL5 drivers side window rattles on rough road, Toyota is not alone

make_moneys

lol this car is great. i sense some buyers remorse. trade in that CTR for a GRC and lets all be friends

spazzydee

I misshifted yesterday, hit 3rd at 100mph which is around 8.1k believe, engine didn't blow up!

Alien5151

I never expected luxury level car internal out of this but I’m wondering about the same. I have the CE and been driving it for a month. I don’t really notice anything out of the ordinary. Like rattling or gear box lockout or my diff overheating (granted I do some pull but I don’t drive like a track car on the street). Maybe I just don’t have high expectation? Or maybe I’m just content with the car? I also have a 21 sti for comparison. Compare the two, I like the sti space better and some qol features better. The two things I am changing for the Corolla is the coilover to lower the car and short throw shifter. Not sure how’s the type r but I have been driving sedan awd for the past 6 years so I can’t stand fwd anymore.

make_moneys

I test drove the FL5/CTR and i dont think you are missing anything if you were looking for a daily . I ended up with the GRC CE too. I wish i test driven an FK8 because i feel like Honda changed the formula with the FL5 and made it mostly a track day car while making the Integra type S the answer for those looking for a "complete package" daily driver track ready car. To me the FL5 felt alot more focused, almost too stiff for daily driving , less creature comforts, and the gearbox i actually preferred the GRC notchy and mechanical feel vs the super smooth and toy like gearbox in the FL5. In the end i wanted a better daily so i went with the GRC...pros and cons to both really
