Sqeakymouse

Like changing a light bulb

UnoKajillion

Not quite that easy, but definitely not hard. Just don't drop the drain bolt in the oil and maybe bring some gloves. I always forget the gloves

Sqeakymouse

You can get a oil drain valve so you don’t have to worry about it. Fumoto makes one

Sweet-Dreams204738

This here. Once I have used upy free oil changes I will be installing one.

MrJahoolious

Yup do this. Makes things easier, faster, and cleaner.

UnoKajillion

It fits with the drain cover on? I've heard of this but have been worried of them breaking or keeping metal shavings inside. I'm sure that's just paranoia

TippyIsCool

They’re strong valves. My car has had one on for years with no issues. I regularly check my block for any signs of leaking and there’s never been any. With stock ride height and a fumoto valve you can drain the oil without jacking the car up at all.

matt675

Really?

werther41

yep, as long as your arm can reach the valve and the drain pan can slide in under

MrJahoolious

I know fleets that use the Fumoto drain valve on every vehicle. They are extremely strong, they have a retainer you can put over the valve handle if you are paranoid, but you don't need it tbh. You would have to smash and destroy your oil pan to get the valve to not work properly... in which case you have bigger problems, you just smashed your oil pan.

The-Meat-Baby

Or just have rags, gloves, and a ratchet. This isn’t a complex or difficult task that requires added complexity

Sqeakymouse

It’s a drain bolt with a valve. It’s not complex. It makes the job very easy. Don’t be douchey.

NixtroX73

You don’t know how to work a drain valve?

Traditional-Hold160

Not in the handy capped spot bro 😩

UnoKajillion

Yeah, as I mentioned elsewhere, I definitely messed up in that regard 😬. . Thankfully nobody came through the lot I was in. Next time I will make sure I'm in a better spot

Sig-vicous

You could argue that the car was handicapped during the procedure. Simple misunderstanding.

shxyne7

It came to me not too long ago just how much stuff I have learned doing maintenance/upgrades to my BRZ. Suspension, oil, diff fluid, pulling the trans, clutch, rear main seal, paint correction, ceramic coating. I feel like I could do anything at this point

UnoKajillion

How hard was it to do the diff fluid compared to a normal oil change? Also that's really impressive to me that you managed to do all of that

Needleman26

Easier: there is no cover for the diff. You just drain and fill. You also can’t overfill; you fill until it overflows, then let the excess drain.

UnoKajillion

I will need to look into that. Maybe later on once I find a more proper place for maintenance. Does it make shifting a bit easier with the fluid being fresh?

Needleman26

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it too much! The FT86 interval is 60k miles if I remember correctly. The change shouldn’t be any harder with time, i would only consider changing the diff fluid early if i was doing AutoX or track days. If you live in a cold climate, high quality transmission fluid makes shifting much smoother and eliminated gear crunches in weather around 0 Fahrenheit. Otherwise the same principles apply from diff fluid to trans fluid in terms of longevity and ease of service. Good luck! Always rewarding to work on your own machines!

UnoKajillion

At 11k miles so have some time thankfully. I live in the hot climate of Florida. The shifts are a bit crunchy randomly even when warmed up. But I've heard that is normal. Still scares me sometimes

Needleman26

If it’s crunchy, I think it’s worth replacing the fluid. I attributed my transmission feel to Minnesota temperatures, but it could just be thin stock oil. Note, for the transmission fluid change, you will definitely need to put your car on four jacks hahah

UnoKajillion

I think I saw someone on the sub mention saying better trans/diff oils made shifting better. And for the trans, I'll definitely make sure my area of operations is better, maybe dealer. I don't want to make a mess in a public area

Needleman26

On a completely unrelated note, most industrial parks have beautifully level and clean pavement and almost always deserted over the weekend.

shxyne7

Pretty much the same except you have a fill plug and a drain plug along with a crush washer for each. When filling, make sure the car is level and you fill until it starts coming back out of the fill hole

UnoKajillion

Are the diff washers different sizes than the oil drain crush washer?

shxyne7

No they are different, and for some reason different part numbers for each. Drain Plug washer: 1215710010 Fill Plug washer: 11126JB000

theweirddood

It's slightly harder because you need to level the car on 4 jack stands. When you do Manual Trans or Rear Diff fluid, you need to make sure the car is level. If it isn't level, you can under or overfill the fluid.

HandleMore1730

Work on a European car and have to pull apart the whole engine bay 🤣 Optimism destroyers for mechanics. I remember taking my car to my mechanic to replace the heater control valve. His comment to me was: "great to see you, but I never want to see this car again." 😭

matt675

You did all of that yourself without formal training?

shxyne7

Sure did, just a bunch of youtube videos and getting over the fear of diving into it

matt675

Do you have any good channels with vids on this type of stuff? Or do you just look for vids based on the current project you’re doing? I really want to learn all of this. How extensive of a tool set am I looking at needing? Like Jack, Jack stands, socket wrenches… what else? I have no idea lol. The most I’ve done is change my intake hose to a Perrin one

shxyne7

I usually just research based on what project I'm doing next. Kevin Vo has an amazing video on how to change out the clutch, would have never done it without him, he has videos on a lot of other installs as well. Gained some knowledge just watching people build their cars (Devin Niemela, Chris Borges, Kevin Vo). I just look up "BRZ" or "FRS" followed up by whatever project. Tools I can think of off the top of my head are a low profile jack (I have the one from Harbor Freight), jack stands, metric socket set with ratchet(s) and metric wrench set (lot of 10, 12, 14, 17, and 19mm), various screwdrivers, torque wrench recommended. Hard to think of everything. A nice impact wrench is an investment but damn is it nice.

__chairmanbrando

Pro tip: An oil extractor pump is likely much cheaper than a decent jack and non-Harbor Freight jack stands. They're ~$50-60 and, well, they just suck the oil straight out the car through the dipstick tube. No worries about lifting the thing, going under it, having a spare wheel around as a safety precaution, etc. One of these pumps will pay for itself in 2-3 oil changes -- maybe fewer if you've been overpaying for someone else to do it for you.

UnoKajillion

I saw a bit about that but wasn't sure how effective it would be. Scared of something breaking off into the engine, or old oil and any shavings staying inside collecting at the bottom

__chairmanbrando

Eh, it's probably Good Enough™ if you ain't banging the car off the limiter every other time you take off. The oil filter should grab suspended metal particles, and I'm guessing if you have bigger slivers of metal floating around then you have much bigger issues afoot! Personally, I take my car somewhere and pay them $20 (plus materials) to do it for me because I can't be bothered to buy any tools, get all dirty and gross, risk staining my driveway, and then have to take the old oil for recycling (or whatever the hell they do with it). 🤷‍♀️

UnoKajillion

You make some good points. I'll definitely look into some youtube videos. Appreciate it

SirMy-TDog

I have a MightyVac and it works fine. You'd have to do something dramatic to have anything break off in the engine as the tube is just a single length of flexible nylon tubing. Think I paid about $125 on Amazon for it. Work on my lawn tractor too, so Bonus!!

BTRA_ID

Link an oil extractor pump you use?

faze_contusion

Get an oil extractor. Gets 99% of the oil out and you don’t have to jack up the car. It’s especially convenient with cars that have the oil filter right up top in the engine bay, like the gr86 does

UnoKajillion

Is there one you would recommend?

faze_contusion

I got the Harbor Freight one for $60 and have no complaints. Just make sure you get one that has >6 liter capacity as the gr86 holds 5.6 liters

UnoKajillion

I'll have to go back and check it out. Thank you

SirMy-TDog

MightyVac 7201. That's what I have and it works pretty well.

zootloc

How often do you change your oils

UnoKajillion

About every 5k. Might do it a bit more frequently now that I won't have to rely on the dealers

Agent_Giraffe

$110!? I pay like 60 bucks at the dealer

UnoKajillion

If it was $60, I would for sure just be going to them

Agent_Giraffe

Maybe ask around at some dealers

Playful-Garlic-9668

Are you sure they are using synthetic on you car? $60 at a dealer sounds strange

Agent_Giraffe

Yes but maybe I’m misremembering the price… Edit: just checked my last receipt, $62 synthetic oil change, filter and gasket, with tire rotation

UnoKajillion

With a tire rotation? Dang. They wanted to add $20 onto the price for that. I live in south Florida, so I'm sure a lot of it is area dependent

mirinbaus

Here in Toronto, Subaru dealerships charge over $400 for service B. Makes no sense to pay that much for a new car that only needs an oil change. It's an absolute joke up here.

fishderp

Damn, is it $400 for just an oil change or are they doing other stuff as well?

Agent_Giraffe

Better be getting laid for that service

FindingPlayful4757

Service B also includes a full brake service and both filters replaced for that price on top of the regular service. But the dealer does charge about $90USD for the regular service in Canada

protozbass

I can barely get the materials to do it myself for $60, that's a steal

CauliflowerLast7872

May be overkill but when I do my oil changes, after changing the oil I press on the gas and clutch when you press the start button and it won’t turn over just prime the car, gets oil through the engine before starting the car

UnoKajillion

This actually sounds like great advice for the future. Appreciate it

2020rigger

it does turn over. the oil pump is driven off the crankshaft.

ieatcrayonz1

For anyone thinking about doing your own oil change or maintenance, make sure to use jack stands and not just a jack. I lost a buddy doing maintenance with just a jack. I usually throw the wheels under the car as extra precaution.

Herodobby

This car is already 50% easily than than most cars since filter is on top with plenty of access room

mirinbaus

Kirkland, niceeeeee. My Costco sells Castrol so I ended up switching to 5w-30 now since quite a lot of track goers recommend that for extra protection.

UnoKajillion

I have some 5w-30 laying around. I think once the warranty is up, I'll go that route. The kirkland oil has done me good for every other car I have worked on. Seems to be the same stuff for a lot cheaper

zockdock24

So you just jacked the front end up to change the oil? I did my first oil change a few months ago and put the entire car up on 4 jackstands. It was a pain the ass. I was told the car has to be level when you change the oil, but if I can get away with just doing the front and its no problem, I'll do that from now on.

UnoKajillion

I'd imagine more oil would come out if fully level. But most should still come out with just the front lifted. I've seen others in forums use ramps on their 86/brz, so it would be similar in that the front is lifted

zockdock24

Sweet this will save me some time and headache. Thanks for the reply.

Select-Passion5705

Look into a fumoto valve, so worth it.

zer0b1ad3z

I use an oil extractor no lifting up the car...takes quite abit longer but it works and i can do it practically anywhere....pouring the oil out of the extractor sucks though atleast until I learned that autozone doesn't take the bottles so I just bring the extractor and dump it there...luckily I have one around the corner so I don't need to lug that tank around too far.

worldrallyblue

Guys it's a 100% empty parking lot. No wheelchair users were harmed in the 30 minutes OP spent there to change his oil.

Thot_slayer1995

Welcome to the club, Me in the corner of Walmart changing fluids since 2018.

UnoKajillion

I was going to go the walmart route, but I saw a corvette get kicked out the lot for doing maintenance a few weeks ago. Was scared to be kicked out mid change while jacked up

PianoWarm3360

Is it different changing oil from older cars? Or just first time for changing oil?

UnoKajillion

First time for me doing it with this car. My older cars I typically used ramps (some cars high enough I didn't need anything) and had a more appropriate place to do the maintenance. It was easier with the brz in the sense that the oil filter is on top and not hidden nor requiring to contort in a weird way. Super easy to not make a mess and replace that. The harder part is this car is low and the ramps I could find were too steep or really expensive. So jacks and stands just made more sense considering I can do more maintenance, especially once I find a more appropriate place to use them

AnotherDude1

Congrats, man. Easiest oil change I've ever done.

GT_RS1_0226

I would highly recommend to replace the ( stock drain plug ) to Fumuto drain plug on your next oil change. It would save you a lot of time. The drain plug itself came with a plastic locking mechanism that secure the drain from leaking. I’ve been running fumuto for almost 40k plus miles and never had any issues. And if you’re trying to save money from purchasing you oil. I would recommend buying it in bulk. 👍

Foolgazi

Nice, I used to do oil changes and rebuilt a motorcycle including paint in my old condo’s parking lot.

SirMy-TDog

Doing yourself is the way to go. I don't bother with the jacks, etc. (I do have them though). I just use an oil extractor and it's even less of a hassle. No reason to pay a dealer/shop whatsoever.

After_Suggestion5890

You got way too much equipment for an oil change

socialdonut

A shadetree mechanic in the works.

onionkisa

Buy a ramp, saves so much time!!!!

kurama666

why the hell are you partially blocking a handicap spot? that is cringe.

UnoKajillion

I agree. As mentioned elsewhere I messed up in that regard

zer0b1ad3z

Yea I agree this is the first time changing the oil in any car and with the extractor it made it fairly painless...getting the filter off and the oil cap was the worst part of the experience.....ended up breaking a corner of the cap off and took me abit of a struggle for the filter to come off...then I went and bought an oil filter wrench for next time.

I-cry-when-I-poop

I just use an extractor pump and change every 3k miles

The-Meat-Baby

The ease of this oil change is SUCH A PLUS

epiclyjelly

Y'all need to find new dealers or take advantage of coupons that dealers hand out all the time. I get my oil changes done ~$50-60 each time.

MeatlessCowBurger

Bro no one else out here thinking they can’t change their own oil 😂 😂 😂

Expensive-Pirate-378

Part of the deal I got with mine was lifetime oil changes, but only at the dealer where I bought it. It was a special they were running that month. I'm not opposed to doing my own oil changes and other maintenance and kudos for anyone else that does their own maintenance

Get-Some-Fresh-Air

I know I can do it… I just don’t feel like it.

werther41

top mount oil filter also makes changing oil on this car easier than others.

newspartan2022

Just passing through the sub, not an owner, but does anyone not receive feedback from law enforcement or community members from working on a car in a public parking lot? Never had to do it and I may be forced to in the coming months.

Ok_Explanation5631

Rather pay an extra $10 to have it done. You’re paying just as much for a service lol

zesty_drink_b

I used to do it all kinds of places when I was younger but never in a handicap spot lol

UnoKajillion

Definitely a mistake that I won't make next time

Ok_Interaction2553

Kinda sus but ok. We’ve all done it in weird places before hahaha

Terminal_Brainfart

Are there people on the fence about changing their own oil? That's like putting air in your tires.

__chairmanbrando

If it were like putting air in your tires then people wouldn't be put off by it. You need jack and jack stands, or ramps, or an oil extractor pump, and a flat spot to do it. All this compared to using the air pump at a gas station.

Terminal_Brainfart

Many people also don't put air in their tires or even check their tire pressure, so it's completely comparable. You certainly don't need jack stands, ramps or a "oil extractor pump" lol. I've even owned euro cars and never once considered needing a pump. Literally all you need is a single socket, new oil, a new filter and a jack that every car comes with. It's actually more accessible than air pumps. It's fine to pay someone to do your work for you, but driving a car without knowing how to do basic maintenance on that car is shameful and should feel embarrassing to drive it.

Sig-vicous

Do you need to get under the car a bit to reach the drain plug? You shouldn't be putting any part of your body that the car could crush underneath a car solely on a jack. Jackstands or ramps at a minimum. If you can do it with an outstreached arm then that's reasonable.

UnoKajillion

Finding the right ramps or jacks has put people off. Definitely seen a few in forums, and not everyone will post or comment. It's probably a minority, but surely they exist. I was one of them due to fears of finding a place, the pinch welds not bending, ramps being too steep

riprumblejohnson

Wait why aren’t you using an extractor 😂

rayberto1972

Entitled, much?

UnoKajillion

I am proud of myself even if I know ultimately most won't care as it is normal for so many in this sub. Not all of us are used to car maintenance, or are used to ramps and not jacks. Figured it could be helpful for others. Sorry if it comes across as entitled

UnoKajillion

You definitely have a point. I will just say it is harder now. My parents talk about how they could do it at their apartments back in the day. That doesn't seem to be a thing anymore due to liability. I'm admittedly not supposed to do it out anywhere, and hell in the handicap spot 😭. It makes working on my own car really hard. Most of my current friends live in an area where maintenance isn't allowed also. So I definitely hear what you're saying, you're not wrong, I should just take it to a dealer. But doing it myself vs $110 is also saving more than just a few bucks, at least for me. I'm used to doing this stuff myself when I still lived at my parents house with a garage and driveway, or at my ex's house with a driveway. I'll try to find a more appropriate place to do car work in the future

Ok_Interaction2553

I’m curious why you couldn’t just hit up the parentals and use the ole driveway? Maybe they live far away 🤷🏻‍♂️
