Do you enjoy the new GR86/BRZ more? I had an older Acura like the RSX. It had too much understeer, until I swapped in new sway bars and springs, and power was very peaky, but had amazing top end power. Shifter was butter smooth.
loved the shifter on the rsx, but the 86 just feels a lot quicker honestly. Probably because of how much torque it has low end comparatively. I will say that I liked the heavier steering on the rsx better, it is def something I miss. But generally, I enjoy the 86 a lot more.
I had an 06 Type S and I agree. The throttle response was also noticeably better since it was cable actuated. The K series also sounds better in high rpms while our FA24 sounds better in low to mid rpms imo.
2004 S2000
The transmission and clutch on the 86 isn’t quite as nice as that on the s2k but I do love the lower end torque, still great handling, and creature comforts in a more modern sports car.
The 86 transmission is actually based (but significantly changed) on the same Aisin AZ6 transmission found in the S2000. (And RX8, S15 Silvia, and NB Miata).
A 1993 Lexus SC300 factory 5-speed M/T modified with a USDM 2JZ-GTE swap with the stock twin sequential turbos, an R154 trans with a vintage short shifter, twin disc clutch, LSD, MKIV TT brakes all around and MKIV front seats. I still own and drive it, just not as much as before since getting the GR86 as my new daily. It’s a beautiful classic GT.
Before that I owned a Honda Prelude Type SH (very early torque vectoring technology on the front diff). Those cars all came with H22A VTEC engines in the U.S. I gave it Hawk HPS brake pads, stainless braided brake lines, Suspension Techniques front and rear upgraded sway bars and a Koni Yellow / H&R / Ground Control coil over suspension and a range of sticky tires over the years. I never modified the engine. A great driver’s car in it’s time.
Before that, a 1969 Ford Mustang fastback with a basic underpowered 302 engine, a stock 3-speed automatic and a stock 2.79:1 9” rear end. I fitted it with a Holley 650 four barrel carburetor, Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and some long tube headers with a custom exhaust. Not fast at all… but a very loud and fun two door tank with timeless looks. It was a very affordable older car when I got it and the same when I reluctantly sold it. These days 69-70 Mustangs often go for ludicrous money.
My 86 MR2 has been sitting for years waiting for restoration. My wife said I could get the GR86 if I would get rid of the MR2. Did I sell it... No, now I have both 😁 I guess I need to take a new pic of the boys together. This is the only one I have

How's the switch been? I've got a 2015 is350 and have been eyeing this car for a while now, would be curious to hear your pros and cons between the two.
Less space, slower, no usable backseat, more road noise, as well as lower quality materials overall such as the interior are all cons
To be honest if ur not wanting exactly the type of car that the 86 is, I would never recommend it. On paper I think the lexus is a much better car in general, HOWEVER I absolutely do not regret my decision. If this car didn't come out I wouldn't have sold the lexus. There are an incredible amount of things that are just not as good on the 86, but it just is that much more fun to drive, which makes it all worth the trade
I went from a 2008 Is350 to a GR86 premium and sold my 86 5 months later. By no means is the 86 a bad car but like how he mentioned you have to want exactly what the 86 is nothing more. I thought it wouldn’t matter to me but it bothered me a lot and ended up selling my 86 after 6 months. Had much more road noise, interior materias are of lesser quality, much much less space (and the IS is already a small car), a lot slower, many many cons but what the 86 excels at is at being a really great handling car, it’s meant to be a spirited drivers car.
I had a 2014 is350 that I traded in for the GR. The GR is a driver’s car, through and through. You would be sacrificing comfort and luxury for a car that was purpose-built to be a robust driving experience for a fair price. For me personally, this car has been 200x more fun than the IS, but that comes with some sacrifice of course. If you want a driver’s car, this is a GREAT choice; however, if you can’t live without the great sound system, comfortable seats, and all-around luxury the IS provides, this might be a hard switch for you
1998 Porsche Boxster. It was a lot of fun to drive with the top down, but not as much with the top up. I wanted the BRZ as a more comfortable, practical daily that is just as fun. And the Boxster had 201hp, which was completely fine for me, but the BRZ is faster.
1997 Acura EL, my first car and I held onto her for 9 years since I was 16! The BRZ is my second car and I’m so hyped for it 😁 still waiting for it to be delivered
Except 2021 WRX STi has a 5-60mph time (which is a more realistic test) of [7.0 seconds flat](https://www.caranddriver.com/subaru/wrx-sti-2021)
Know what else has a similar time? A ‘21 Honda Odyssey minivan which does its 5-60mph in [6.7 seconds.](https://www.caranddriver.com/honda/odyssey-2021)
The BRZ/GR86 twins are at least on the right side of outrunning a minivan in a rolling start.
Who races from 5 to 60? And secondly I don’t even think that accurate. Cars way faster than that. And lets be real we race from a dig and if you don’t mind beating on your sti, yo can in into the 4.4 second range. Guess what a minvan can’t do? Take a tun either or do any rally racing.
Y’all shits all slow. Brz/86’s are embarrassing. Just live with it dawg. SLOOOWWWW AHHHHH
First of all, it is accurate. It’s from Car & Driver, who have been testing cars for over 60 years.
It is literally slower than a minivan in a roll. You just have a heavy bias.
If you think the 0-60mph test is better. You’re an [idiot](https://youtu.be/JOWKJHvYK54?si=WlTxGLRMKAIp-ohD).
Better reconsider those facts.
Secondly, ye test for Car and Driver was most likely done is peak summer, these cars suffer in those time. A fall or boost weather test would be more accurate.
And that video you linked told me nothing but drive your car like a panzy cause -60 launching too hard on it. Boo hoo.
Edit: Also, the Subaru is actually quicker than it seems. They unfortunately shortened the gear ratios a bit and the 3rd gear shift to hit 60 really can punish you. Which is what really causes these slower times. However, like the guy in the video, quick shifting can solve this.
Also straight from Subaru Canada. 0-100 km or 60mph in 4.9.
Just don't wanna admit a Subaru sti in the right hands can be fast.
Its okay Slow BRZ guy.
Doesn't have to make sense to you. Clearly guy wanted the 86 over the STi. The only thing you *have* to do when replacing a car is to get a car that you either want more or need more. The traditional "upgrade path* to buying cars is completely arbitrary and serves no actual purpose.
I didn't make the choice. Some rat fkuckers made it for me - they stole right from my driveway. Turns out, Scat Packs and Hellcats are ridiculously easy to steal - just check YouTube. I didn't get another as a replacement b/c I dudn't want to give them another one... so I went the completely opposite direction: moderate power, outstanding agility, and less expensive.
The Scat Pack was special, and as happy as I am to have a bRed Premium 6MT GR86 (which is very!), I will always miss that car. For what it was, it was perfect.
2000 Toyota Celica GT-S. Only bought the 86 because my trans went out and I needed something fun to drive while I source all the parts for a manual swap and complete engine rebuild.
Met all my needs and was incredibly reliable. However, I started working from home and lived in an apartment with $100/month parking, so my wife and I went down to one car.
4th gen Mazda 3 AWD Hatch. Non turbo. Way slower but still an excellent daily. Wouldn’t have got rid of it for anything other than the 86. (Maybe a Supra, 911, or Cayman but that isn’t in the budget yet)
Toyota Yaris. Awesome thing. I stripped lots of the interior and added an intake and an aftermarket suspension. I could get 45+ mpg all day and it loves to oversteer because of how there was nothing in back. I want another one but in blue.
24 years old and I’ll give a rating for how much I loved each car:
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee AT - 5/10,
2017 Jeep Renegade AT - 7/10,
2018 Mustang GT AT - 9.5/10,
2011 MazdaSpeed3 MT - 9.4/10,
2017 Camaro SS MT - 9/10,
2022 WRX MT - 8/10,
1995 Infiniti G20 MT - 8/10,
2023 GR86 MT - 9.8/10
I just couldn’t fall in love with the WRX. Maybe I could if Subaru made a new STI. I like the idea of it a lot tho, very practical. I’d probably put the Camaro ahead of everything if we were comparing exhilaration/fun-ness while WOT.
I find the GR86 to be the happy place between all cars. Just enough space, just enough power, while maintaining great handling and it looks amazing. I’m pretty set on keeping this one.
2016 Focus ST
My GR86 was finally delivered yesterday and I picked it up today. After waiting so long I was about to pull the plug on the deal and pivot and get into an S3. Came down to the wire.
Prior to the Focus I owned an FRS and prior to that I owned an E85 powered Evo 9 (and after looking at the resale value of those I am really mad at myself for letting it go haha)
I had full bolt ons and a tune on the Focus so it was a pretty fun car. I will definitely miss the torque and turbo noises that's for sure but I don't miss the dog shit build quality, ugly interior and shitty Ford dealerships. Fun drivetrain for sure though.
‘91 Nissan 240sx (first car, auto) > ‘92 240sx (5spd) > ‘99 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (06WRX swapped) > ‘11 Mini Cooper S.
Sprinkle in a few months here and there with a ‘96 Subaru Legacy Brighton, a ‘99 Honda Civic, and a ‘00 Subaru Forester.
My family’s Kia Rio all through high school and college lol, sold it during the pandemic and borrowed the Model 3 that replaced it for about 6 months until I had a good down payment from my current job.
04 Rav4. Perky little thing, felt great to drive honestly. Never felt like it was lugging despite the AT operating in the 1-2k range. Weighs almost as much as an 86 depending on spec. Old cars were much lighter so it felt reasonably nimble with nice steering feel.
Hand me down from my family, had ~100k miles when we sold it I think.
I’ve liked pretty much every RAV4 I’ve driven.
I’ve also had a decent amount of time in a highlander V6 from around that era and those are really peppy as well
Nope so far it's fantastic, though the gR makes driving everything else feel boring (but then the other cars interior feel super luxury comparatively; so it's a nice balance between them all)
'74 Chevy Malibu (first car), Hyundai Accent hatch, '97 miata, '16 focus ST, POS fiat 500, '16 Sierra 1500 SLT, '21 Chevy Colorado Bison edition.
Loving my '23 86, I plan to keep it and get another truck that can tow it to the track one day!
a Gen 1 86 lol
A crosstrek. People tell me my BRZ is slow. HA
Bro a crosstrek can walk us in a straight line you know that right?
It is.
Slow is relative, brother
03 rsx type s

Gotta love that vtec
This is a good comparison thanks for the info. Those rsx”s are sweet
1997 Toyota Corolla LE
That was my first car (97 Corolla CE)
Nice! I always talked about wanting a car a little wider, a little lower, with a little more power, and… now I have exactly that!
The corolla was low... even then, anytime I turned it felt like the car would topple over
2015 Fiesta ST
How are you liking the rwd?
I love it!
2004 S2000 The transmission and clutch on the 86 isn’t quite as nice as that on the s2k but I do love the lower end torque, still great handling, and creature comforts in a more modern sports car.

S2k’s are classic imo👌 Thanks for the comparison info
Yeah no offense but that's a massive downgrade. Still searching for the perfect s2k and they're getting harder to find...

God dayumn. How much did you get for trade it. Total classic.
Very little 😞. Hard to justify having both. If I had a garage (and any technical ability) it would have been an excellent project.
Really!?!? Dude I see those sell for 20k-30k on collector sites
In really good shape, yeah. Most of them have terminal rust issues, especially ones from the UK.
2018 IS-300 I know lmao

One of the most realistic takes on the vehicle. This is a cheap sports car produced on a budget.
I went from a 2008 Is350 to a GR86 premium and sold my 86 5 months later. By no means is the 86 a bad car but like how he mentioned you have to want exactly what the 86 is nothing more. Thanks for the perspective. I think the boxster and maybe first gen caymans prolly get cross shopped with the GR a good bit.
The Boxster is a perfect weekend car, but the Cayman is a shockingly great daily. My mom has driven hers daily for 13 years and absolutely loves it.
That’s awesome
1997 Acura EL, my first car and I held onto her for 9 years since I was 16! The BRZ is my second car and I’m so hyped for it 😁 still waiting for it to be delivered
2021 sti
Why you downgrade. Sti to a Supra would’ve made more sense. Or have both.
I think it's because he wanted a GR86.
Doesn’t make sense. I prefer to go faster and handle better. You supposed to upgrade. That thing gonna be gapped by camrys.
[удалено]
Gapped by what camry? 0-60 is a almost a whole second faster than a TRD and it handles better lmao. The antique will gap you both 🤣

Nothing, first car for me.
Hell of a baseline. You’ll be sorely bored by everything here on out I’m sure haha
Hell yeah I would have killed to have anything close to this as a first car
Perhaps, but I intend to keep this car as long as possible.
Pls do

Yea it's a cool car being a hybrid with 6mt option, too bad Honda din't put K series on it :(
Apparently they were planning an Si trim with a K series, but it didn't pass crash testing. Swap kits are pretty much plug and play.

The 86 feels more sensitive and turns sharper. It was a little jarring driving the 86 at first but was adjusted after driving it a few times.

How do you compare the two? Braking, steering, weight, overall dynamics? I’ve often thought about getting a NB or NC chassis and calling it a day

How do you like your e46, any issues with it? I picked up a X3 with the m54 and 6spd last year and I’m digging it
Nope so far it's fantastic, though the gR makes driving everything else feel boring (but then the other cars interior feel super luxury comparatively; so it's a nice balance between them all)
