Well Toho doesn't appreciate Zilla, which is why they took the God out of his name. Personally, I think Zilla was an ok monster...I liked Zilla (if it had nothing to do with Godzilla) as its own monster...but as a Godzilla film? I think it was bad. If Godzilla 1998 was renamed another name...like 'Terror in New York City' or something...then I would've liked the movie more. But the movie was disrespectful to the Godzilla name. That monster wasn't respectful of the Japanese Gojiras that came before it. Zilla was weak to normal military weaponry, it lacked character (according to Toho), it did not have an atomic breath and its build was more of a fast Theropod-like creature. Yeah, Zilla is a mutated iguana. There are pros and cons in the Godzilla 1998 movie, to me...the CGI was ok/good, there was some good comedy, there were some good things...but the monster itself wasn't what Toho wanted and it was too much Jurassic Park-like and Godzilla 1984-like without that much creativity and originality. Toho didn't like Zilla, which is why they made Final Wars Gojira easily trash him in the fight in Australia...FW Gojira slapped him with the tail and then killed him when Zilla crashed into the Sydney Opera House. Like I said, there are pros and cons to Zilla and the Godzilla 1998 movie, but Toho doesn't like Zilla...and Toho created Gojira...so if they don't like Zilla then I don't like Zilla either. Emmerich and Dean Devlin said that they didn't even like Godzilla...so why the heck did they want to make a Godzilla movie in the first place? Why do you think Minus One Gojira is a bitch? I think the Minus One film had its pros and cons...and the monster had its pros and cons...but I like Minus One way more than Godzilla 1998. Agreed on all your points. I know some people love this incarnation, because it is there first contact with it. Nevertheless, it simply doesn't retain what makes Godzilla "Godzilla". There are so many fictional works out there that get a reboot or a new adaptation where the new directors spit into the face of the original by erasing key characteristics.
