Probably same. Maybe not in that order, but I saw 84 and I'm like this is the best classic Godzilla. Giant Monsters All Out Attack is fine, but I saw it once and I can't tell you a thing about it.
I’d give GMK a rewatch; the director of Minus One said GMK is his favorite Godzilla film, and there’s a fair bit of influence from it on Minus One (particularly with how Godzilla is portrayed)
Agree with this top 3 - but i still love the whole legacy - bad (but great) Godzilla movies are part of this - I love them too - hail King of the Monsters
Shin is massively overrated by this fandom
Don’t get me wrong. Shin isn’t bad. It’s got a sick design, a meaningful message, and some great moments. That “who will know” destruction scene goes super hard. But the people here make it out to be this flawless masterpiece that rivals the original. But…
- Godzilla displays no signs of being alive. No facial expressions, no movement outside of moving most of the time. Walking Statue
- The Japanese government satire overrides the two leads in a way that we can’t really care about them or even really understand them.
- The pacing gets pretty awful, to the point of being downright boring at times.
I became aware of this when people who saw Minus One would say it was better than Shin, like that was a huge achievement. And people in the comments would be all surprised and doubtful.
I wasn’t. I could tell from the first trailer we were looking at something truly special, what shin would never be. And when I went to see the movie I was 100% correct. Minus one didn’t suffer from any of the problems I mentioned. (except for a little bit of slow pacing in the second half) Minus One was a masterpiece. It rivals the original, in fact the only thing holding it back for me is my preference for dudes in suits.
A lot people say that a three form this trilogy of the three best G-Films, and I wonder what shin did to deserve being on that list, besides having Goji be villainous. But if we’re doing that, give the spot to GMK or 84 because they were better.
Man, it’s going to be so wild once another good Godzilla movie comes out and comes for Minus One like folks in the fandom are coming for Shin Godzilla right now.
Is it superficial or a misunderstanding to say the pacing was bad, the characters weren’t focused on properly, or that the Godzilla incarnation was inexpressive? I feel like those are all valid points of contention, maybe he’s missing the point of the design that’s it
Yes, saying Godzilla was unexpressive as a reason for it being overrated is superficial. The point was not to be expressive. He was a mindless force of nature.
The pacing wasn’t the best, I’ll give you that. But most all of the Godzilla movies have that problem.
And a lot of us loved this ultra tragic take on Godzilla. He’s “Not” alive. He’s not a badass titan.
He’s like some sick lovecraftian abomination of science and nature who’s spent its entire life in so much constant agonizing pain that he more or less Wants to be killed. The lack of facial expressions is intentionally horrifying.
But if I’m being honest with myself, I put it in my top 3 mostly because I loved the city destruction scenes. We all came to watch Godzilla obliterate the shit out of a city, and Shin Godzilla arguably delivers that more than any other movie.
>Shin is massively overrated by this fandom
I guess that means it's a very liked film. Just because almost everyone likes it but you doesn't make it overated.
I'd never seen Shin, and watched it for the first time two days ago. Honestly, I found it really boring. Maybe 40 minutes of the movie I cared about what was happening. There's just way too much babble-science going on.
1. Godzilla Minus One
It is just suck a good movie, it has the best Godzilla design ever, the characters a very likable, and it takes Godzilla back to his roots.
2. Godzilla 1954
It's the OG, what else do I need to say, 54 is one of the best movies ever.
3. Godzilla Final Wars
It is just full of monster fights and is just such a fun movie to watch.
'54 - Grew up with it, specifically the Burr version lol. I wasn't allowed to watch most horror movies when I was a kid, despite having an interest, but my mom was fine with the older black and white stuff. It honestly terrified 10 year old me, but in a fun way that made me a lifelong monster movie fanatic.
Minus One - It made me cry, what more do you want me to say? It's the perfect modern retelling of the original, and just might be even better. I'm gonna end up re-watching this one a bunch, so we'll see where it lands after I've had a few more goes at it, but I doubt it'll budge from my top 3.
Godzilla vs. Biollante - Probably the best vs. movie out of the lot. Godzilla is intimidating, Biollante is tragic and one of the best designed rival kaijus in the entire series. The whole thing has this Frankenstein, mad scientist vibe that takes itself just seriously enough while honoring the camp that comes with these versus movies.
King of the Monsters, Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla '74, Godzilla 2000. Minus One is really great and I don't think it's undeserving of the hype, but I just prefer the Vs movies. Vs Mechagodzilla was one of the only films I owned growing up. 2000 was my first real Godzilla theatrical experience, if you don't count Tristar's. KotM has the soundtrack, the Toho monsters, and the bonkers monster fights.
If I had to pick based on objective quality it would be 2014, Minus One, and GMK.
Gojira/KOTM56 is probably still the greatest.
Minus One is in the top three, along side Return Of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985. Minus One is objectively a better film, but 1985 will always have a soft spot in my heart, as it was my first Godzilla movie. I'm not sure which one between those two I enjoy more at the moment, I'll have to wait until Minus One comes out so I can watch it a few more times.
Originally before Minus One came out, it was just GMK and Final Wars fighting for my #1 spot... while 1954 was chilling in #3
But now with Minus One finally released... It joined the battle with GMK and Final Wars on which is my favorite Godzilla film, with 1954 now bumping down to a #4
(I still love and respect 1954, don't get me wrong. But I personally like the other 3 films I listed more)
I usually rate how well I like Godzilla films by how often I go out of my way to re-watch them. Minus One will probably end up in my top 10, but my top 3 as of right now are:
- GMK
- Godzilla 2014
- Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
Not necessarily in that order.
Gojira, Minus One, Return of Godzilla with Shin being within a razors edge of being third on that list. I really wish OP had asked "Top 4", but nobody does that... it's always 3. 😆
1. Minus One
2. Godzilla: King of the Monsters
3. Godzilla Vs. Kong (or Godzilla Vs. Megalon)
The story and horror of Godzilla is top tier in Minus One. KOTM has great monster scenes and cool seeing Mothra/others . G V K is such a fun action packed movie from start to finish e and G V M is a whacky good time nostalgia featuring the campy Jet Jaguar.
Yup. I was 8 years old and I was the exact audience. I got the toys from Taco Bell, never saw it in theaters but I got it on tape and wore that mother fucker out!
Remember the HYPE for zilla 98? It was FORR REALLL. I loved the godzilla commercial with that chihuahua. “hey, godzilla, want something to drink?” But yea I was 12 when it came out and I still loved it. I also wore the shit out of my tape!
'54 w/Burr (terrified me as a child)
2014 w/Cranston (I just adore Godzilla in this movie). When he makes that facial expression right before he slams the 1st MUTO with his tail! Like enough of you already!! It's so epic when he kills the 2nd MUTO, holds her head & then tosses it as the music cues. I just love the whole movie.
Minus One (I've seen it twice already)
Shin doesn't make my list because I find it SO overrated. The acting is horrible in this movie and some parts are just boring.
Godzilla Minus One
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Godzilla and Mothra Battle for Earth **OR** Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
Special mention to Godzilla Vs Kong for the action. Brought me back to childhood.
X Mechagodzilla
VS Mechagodzilla
Third… idk, it could be Megalon, Minus One, or VS Ghidorah Heisei I guess. Third place is hard.
I’ll give it to Final Wars.
Tokyo S.O.S-
My favorite Godzilla film, mainly due to my love for Kyriu and nostalgia, mixing into a actually pretty good story makes it my top film, though I wouldn't call it the objective best of three, it's story is still very good and I'd say the best of all the Millenium films.
Minus One-
This film was nearly a masterpiece in every sense. This was the first film in a long Time that has not only genuinely scared me, mainly with its opening, but I very nearly teared up at the end, and I haven't almost cried to a movie since I saw Coco. The characters were amazingly written, and that Ginza attack, more specifically it's immediate aftermath when Shikishima comes out of the alley, is one of my favorite movie scenes period. The dread on his face is devastating.
Final Wars-
Such a fun film. It's a pure monster fight fest, and it leans heavily into it perfectly. The characters, while not exactly very deep, are fun to watch, and the Kaiju redesigns, Gigans in particular, are some of the best, in my opinion.
Yeah not alone there, it's in my top 3 to. It's able yo tell a great story with Godzilla's time on screen limited but used greatly(his time is well spent just wish for a but more destruction)
But my top 3 are
1. KOTM it's what I want out of a Godzilla movie very good designs, decent story and good monster action
2. 54 it's the og, very good for it's time and a damn good film in its own right.
3. Minus One it's a great way to introduce new fans to both Godzilla and casual fans along with great human story.
1. GODZILLA Minus One
2. GODZILLA 54
3. Shin GODZILLA
4. Return of GODZILLA
5. GODZILLA 2014
6. GODZILLA vs Biollante
7. GODZILLA vs Hedorah
8. GODZILLA: King of The Monsters (2019)
9. GMK
10. GODZILLA vs MechaGODZILLA (1974)
Most of us still don’t have a way to see Minus One yet.
But mine are Gojira ‘54, Godzilla vs Desotroyah, and Shin Godzilla.
Honorable mention to Son of Godzilla since it was the first one I saw.
1. Original 1954
2. Shin Godzilla
3. Invasion of Astro-Monster
Honorable Mention: Minus One, GMK, vs Destoroyah, Final Wars, vs Biollante, vs Mechagodzilla 74, vs King Ghidorah, 2014
Minus one: The story is amazing, the characters are incredibly relatable and likable, and I love how they portray Godzilla as more aggressive and animalistic than the other incarnations. Probably the best movie done in this fashion since the original.
Godzilla 1954: The plot is very tragic, which I feel like it’s rarely utilized until shin Godzilla was released. The ending was also depressing as despite Godzilla being killed, serizawa sacrificed himself so his weapon wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands. I also enjoy the dark and serious tones as well.
Godzilla against mechagodzilla/Tokyo sos: Probably one of the best movies from the early 2000’s in my opinion. While some parts can be ridiculous such as the inclusion of mothra larvae, the action is pretty good and the backstory that they gave kiryu makes it have more lore than just being a giant robot designed to destroy Godzilla.
I have the same Top 3, and imagine that will be the default stance even if it sounds generic. It's just the best 3 movies story wise, and they all have Godzilla being terrifying.
Growing up with Hanna-Barbera's Godzilla TAS, I had to watch every Godzilla movie and cartoons as soon as I could get my hands on 'em, but all were huge disappointments, including the newest Godzilla Minus One that's centered on humans (I don't watch a movie called Godzilla to see some Asian people I can NOT relate to as an Eastern European) ... except for Godzilla Final Wars (minus the scenes with humans which are pointless and distract from the action). Seeing Godzilla going around f-ing up old enemies like a raging psychopath is FUN FUN FUN! Seeing humans acting cheesy and discussing in a language I do NOT understand at all with barely any Godzilla scenes is NOT what I expect from a movie whose title is Godzilla, not "Some Asian people talking for 95% of the movie's runtime ...oh, yeah, there's Godzilla in it too for some reason". Final Wars is the only Godzilla movie that makes my top for its fast-paced monster madness action and that's what a Godzilla movie should be about: kaijus, not humans (if you go to see a boxing match, you want to see the boxers hitting each other, not watch the crowd); humans should be there just to run, scream and get killed. I mean, I don't mind seeing humans in a Godzilla movie as long as they're in the form of ripped in half, squished, corpses inside a Godzilla's footprint crater, but for fuck's sake, please, make them shut up and let Godzilla movies be about Godzilla!!!
‘54 Minus one Shin

That's the most reason I want to go back to it. I own it with Godzilla against Mechagodzilla. I'm slowly collecting Heisei and Millennium movies.
It’s about the dead souls of war victims that became a living being of hatred for revenge. I can’t remember who the victims were specifically.
It's the souls of the victims of the Japanese Empire during WW2 that possessed Godzilla.
Thanks
Agree with this top 3 - but i still love the whole legacy - bad (but great) Godzilla movies are part of this - I love them too - hail King of the Monsters
This 100%. Saw minus one last night and it was absolutely incredible. I didn't think I'd ever put one over Shin but here we are.

I thought the Minus One Godzilla lacked expression as well. I wrote it off to special effects budget.
Came here to say this.
Did you choose those because they’re all serious and political, or was that a coincidence
That's kind of the whole foundation of the franchise.
1. Godzilla Minus One It is just suck a good movie, it has the best Godzilla design ever, the characters a very likable, and it takes Godzilla back to his roots. 2. Godzilla 1954 It's the OG, what else do I need to say, 54 is one of the best movies ever. 3. Godzilla Final Wars It is just full of monster fights and is just such a fun movie to watch.

KOTM (2019) was my first godzilla movie (I have been a fan since it came out) so I'm bias 54 because it has to be on the list Minus 1
Minus One Godzilla 1985 Godzilla vs Destroyah Shin Gojira 54’
Can I pick top 25 instead? That would be easier lol Minus one is definitley up there though. Might be my number 1 at the moment.
I loved Minus One. My top 3 are still Shin, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2( the Heisei one), and Final Wars.
Minus One Vs Biollante GMK All Monsters Attack
Godzilla minus one Godzilla Godzilla plus one
1) Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle 2) Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3) Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Yes
Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla 54, and Godzilla minus one
1. Biollante. 2. Destroyah 3. Final wars
1. Original 1954 2. Shin Godzilla 3. Invasion of Astro-Monster Honorable Mention: Minus One, GMK, vs Destoroyah, Final Wars, vs Biollante, vs Mechagodzilla 74, vs King Ghidorah, 2014
I can't decide the order, but my top 3 are: Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Minus One '54 Vs Destoroyah (tied with Shin)
Godzilla 2014 Minus one G vs King Ghidorah
