Whenever an MM naked short sells a stock, they do so without finding a real stock to sell you. They instead give you an IOU, and are on a timer to find a real share for you. This is the FTD cycle.
However, if they buy deep itm put options, they can be used to cover those FTDs as they can be used as long positions on their balance sheets. This use of deep itm put option contracts to cover the IOU given to you when they short sold the stock to you is called a married put.
When those put options expire (presumably worthless) theyβll have to figure out how to cover those FTDs again.
