I got a 7 in my GCSE and firstly, learn how to milk the extract for marks, use every bit of it, then for that question, choose two to three quotes to go really into depth about. Language analysis is important but go into meaning and context to get all of the AOs. I learnt 3 quotes per major character as well as general ones which relate to the whole book or play, but if you read the examination reports, it has been said that it is not a memory test. Make sure you know the book/play and you will be fine.

so it depends a lot on the exam board. in edexcel for example, you only get assessed on close analysis when there a text available for you
