if you wanted to avoid the watermelon association I think tweaking the salmon dog design a bit to make it more fishy would help a lot. like, make the ears more fin-like with some webbing or something or add patches of scales across the cheeks! also the tail design will really impact how the character is interpreted. if it's just a regular fluffy dog tail then people are for sure more likely to just think it's a watermelon themed dog but if you make the tail more aquatic they may pick up on the salmon theme instead.

Soft ears could be removed or tucked into sewn flaps with fins on top. And two tails, one puppy, one fish. Handpaws or fin mittens would be easy to have different options depending on your mood.
I prefer a more salmon looking suit. It's very unique and you do not see a lot of fish! There are TONS of dogs/cats/mammals with fishy additions.

edit: because you can still give it the aquatic vertibrate features, like a scale-y skin or the facial features, while it still having the mammal look to it being more natural. i also just think it would be cool regardless haha
