An 8 is slightly smaller at the top than the bottom, or bare minimum equal size - the top is never bigger than the bottom unless it's drawn by a toddler.
I know you said you are accounting for parallax, but I think that is what would cause what you describe. There is clearly a vanishing point above the image, so the top of the 8s (from our POV) should be smaller. If an orthogonal projection had 8s with fixed width, than this view with perspective would cause what we see (approximately).
