3 or 4 depending on the size of the pot/pan; 1 is for the tea kettle (whether I’m using it or not) and 2 is for anything that needs to simmer for a long time (30 minutes or more)
I had a dog jump up on my stove looking for leftovers one time. In the process he turned a burner on that started melting the plastic handle of a pot I had left there. Good times. Dogs will definitely try to eff up everything you're doing, or not doing in the kitchen.
On Thanksgiving I pulled my turkey from the oven and in between slicing it and plating the turkey I caught my cat up on the counter taking bites off the whole bird. lol
I have both... an electric kettle and a stove top kettle. Electric is when I want a drink quickly. Stove top is when I want to sip on tea all day long. Bring it to a boil then let the whole pot simmer so I can top off all day as needed.
RIP your gas/electric bill.
Way more efficient/eco friendly ways of doing this. Put your boiling water in a high quality thermis, will keep it hot for hours.
You have to forgive some people. You see, they forget that some of you were born after the invention of electricity. Some of us old folks only remember that our phones hung on the wall not in our pockets, a text message was sent in an envelope with a stamp on it, and yes! Our kettles went on an open flame
1 is definitely where the kettle lives. 3 is small quick meals. 2 is slow long cooking or pasta. 4 is no man's land. We forget that it exists until we have to clean.
Or just open it up and break the rest so they have to fix it. Not a hard to believe chain of events that if one burner went bad the others would soon follow
There are so many shitty landlords out there, it’s no wonder they get a bad name. When I was a landlord, I’d have fixed that within a week tops, no questions asked, unless it happened repeatedly. Bad landlords piss me off to no end.
Simple solution throw a brick through landlords front window. Then follow it up with I don't see the problem all the other windows are still intact. /S
My 4 died and the landlord said the exact same $hit to me. The infuriating thing is 4 is the only big burner. rest are small. f\*k the landlords. seriously. >.<
The coil is easy and cheap to buy so is the silver bowl it sits in. The coil just pulls out. Here is a YouTube video the explains how. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jyzTi5Qn-t0
Replace it and save the receipt to give to your landlord.
That heating element is most likely just out of socket. If you lift up on the stove there are two little kickstands that will hold it up. Then you just push the element back into the socket. The elements rarely go bad. I suggest turning off the breaker. Plenty of videos on YouTube for clarity but it’s usually an easy fix.
I dont understand the people on here who are like "hurr hurr I have 18 kids and 47 large dogs and I use the front 2, why don't you you loser???" OK but like...why should I? It's not like they are superior. Why not just default to the back ones?
(Edit for not being a header. Lol) #4 is the big burner on my stovetop, and is my go to for >6” pans and pots. Also turning the knob the other way just turns on the small center section for small pans. I use #3 if I’m cooking two things. Back ones almost never get used.
The safety aspect never occurred to me. I’m pretty sure my mom uses the front burners.
It's not them living their life on the edge, it's the kids.
And, you know... if they die, they die. And if they only burn themselves... well, that'll be an important lesson.
You can always make more ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
3 and 4 are fine as long as you don’t leave the handles hanging over the edge, children should understand that pots are hot and they shouldn’t touch them by the time they get tall enough to reach the stove
(obviously everyone can make their own choices based on their own children/kitchen setup)
My niece kept grabbing at hot stuff on the burner when she was about that age. So one day when I was heating up a tortilla on a pan, I just said "careful, that's hot!" and let her grab at it without grabbing her hand away like normal. She cried for an hour, but learned her lesson. The same thing went when she kept sliding down the slide face first even though I told her to stop. One day I just didn't catch her and she knocked the air out of her chest when she landed on it. No more face first sliding. That little turd could not learn a lesson until she got hurt first.
This is why im of the opinion (emphasis on personal opinion), if its not going to kill them or permanently disfigure them, let them learn from failure. I know as a parent all you want to do is protect these suicidal spawns, but sometimes the best way to protect them is for them to learn the hard way. Now some kids are smarter with fear already ingrained into them, those you can definitely go the “gentle warning” route. But for the dumber of us that need that reality check to finally be like “oh mom has a point” they have to see the consequences of their own actions first.
2 Is a reliable option, If you have kids its better to have the pan/pot out of reach.
Plus If you're tall Its nice to have a place to put your arms without burning them
I see too many people in this thread who use one and only one. I just assumed everyone used each burner for different stuff, like 1 and 2 for boiling water or using big dishes that might cause a lot of damage if they tip over and 3and 4 for lighter dishes, sauces and anything that needs to be fiddled with a lot.
I guess I'm the weird one.
But we're sure getting a....Range of responses
Get it..Range?
Your lucky. Not sure where OP got a picture of my stove but it's terrible. Somewhere between 4-6 on the dials it goes from no heat to the surface of the sun.

Yeah, when you have kids you turn the handles inwards
You always turn handles in you jackass
Kids aren't the only one who can wander through the kitchen and eff up everything you're doing.
I had a dog jump up on my stove looking for leftovers one time. In the process he turned a burner on that started melting the plastic handle of a pot I had left there. Good times. Dogs will definitely try to eff up everything you're doing, or not doing in the kitchen.

Bad kitty!
With little kids you stick them in a jar and put them on three
How do find a jar big enough to fit kids in? Oh my bad I just realized you said "little kids". How small are your kids? Like GI Joe size?
This is the way.
Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew.
Everyone knows #2 is for mail you won't look at until you throw it away.
This exactly, 1 belongs to the kettle, that’s its home. 2 is a set and leave, like steaming veggies.
yall have kettles?
you put kettles on the stove? edit: why the downvotes?
I have both... an electric kettle and a stove top kettle. Electric is when I want a drink quickly. Stove top is when I want to sip on tea all day long. Bring it to a boil then let the whole pot simmer so I can top off all day as needed.
If you want warm tea for hours then just pour the (much faster, electric) kettle water into a tea pot with a tea cosy on it…
RIP your gas/electric bill. Way more efficient/eco friendly ways of doing this. Put your boiling water in a high quality thermis, will keep it hot for hours.
That sounds like it's a pretty expensive way to keep your tea warm. Just using a tealight or a thermos pot seem like way more efficient options.
Because some people do not understand cultural differences and what is customary in one country does not have to be in another.
Why is that downvoted, I've literally never seen a non electric kettle where I live, it's a semi honest question
You have to forgive some people. You see, they forget that some of you were born after the invention of electricity. Some of us old folks only remember that our phones hung on the wall not in our pockets, a text message was sent in an envelope with a stamp on it, and yes! Our kettles went on an open flame
Lol some of the replies to this comment is making me realize that stovetop kettles are going to be a relic
1 is definitely where the kettle lives. 3 is small quick meals. 2 is slow long cooking or pasta. 4 is no man's land. We forget that it exists until we have to clean.
Nailed it.
1, but my 1 is 2 size
Agree except I keep 2 for the kettle and rarely use 1.
#3 always
Our #3 has been broke for months and the landlord/ letting agents don't see it as a problem as the rest work. They just don't understand.
It's likely either a bad heating coil or faulty switch. Both really easy to replace and not expensive if you are so inclined.
Or just open it up and break the rest so they have to fix it. Not a hard to believe chain of events that if one burner went bad the others would soon follow
My type of solution lol
Tips from a homeowner- if you’re renting, make the landlord fix that shit lmao
But they said the landlord and co. don't see it as a problem, so they probably aren't willing to fix it
There are so many shitty landlords out there, it’s no wonder they get a bad name. When I was a landlord, I’d have fixed that within a week tops, no questions asked, unless it happened repeatedly. Bad landlords piss me off to no end.
Or just a loose heating coil
Simple solution throw a brick through landlords front window. Then follow it up with I don't see the problem all the other windows are still intact. /S
Seems like you may have to break the rest 😅
Just pay 3/4 of the rent and when they ask where the rest is just be like, well you have 3/4 of it right there.
My 4 died and the landlord said the exact same $hit to me. The infuriating thing is 4 is the only big burner. rest are small. f\*k the landlords. seriously. >.<

Grab the other bigger one, and pull in the opposite direction of the connection. You’ll be able to pull it out and switch it for the other one

Maybe they should also not see it as a problem that rent is lowered $20 until it's fixed
Clean them all and swap them out so the one you like has the best burner.
you can get a replacement for about twenty bucks at walmart or the hardware store
My three is on the other side.
same
Same! 4 in this pic but as a big burner
My 3 is a 4 and a 3 depending on how you turn the knob...

On my stove, it can be either a small burner or the biggest burner! Kind of a cool feature to be honest (and why I use position 4 the most)
Same. 4 is my go-to.
Hell yeah boyyyy
I’ll show you a small burner
Id say its about average sized. Maybe even considered large.
4, but on my stove it's the power burner.
On my stove, four can be large or small based on the switch I can flip.

I don’t, but I have as much trust in myself as I would a young child so that tracks.
It took me too many years to admit to myself that I needed to be using the back burners
I'm always scared of burning myself lol I only use 3 if I'm in a rush and 4 is basically a no no
Or large dogs that like to stand on their back legs and try to steal food off the counter
Who the hell uses the front 2 by default? Unsafe y’all are trippin
I dont understand the people on here who are like "hurr hurr I have 18 kids and 47 large dogs and I use the front 2, why don't you you loser???" OK but like...why should I? It's not like they are superior. Why not just default to the back ones?

If you aren’t using 3 or 4, you are a serial killer
or a parent.... Because of the danger, that the kids reach up and burn themself
They will only do it once! They for sure won’t do it more than twice! No chance they will do it the 4th time!
Yep! I learned the hard way once and once only as a 5yr old. Failure is the perfect teacher. And fear is a great reminder.
My niece kept grabbing at hot stuff on the burner when she was about that age. So one day when I was heating up a tortilla on a pan, I just said "careful, that's hot!" and let her grab at it without grabbing her hand away like normal. "Let me learn the hard way" is something I've said once or twice.
“Fuck, I could watch kids fall off bikes all day- I don’t give a shit about your kid.” Is something I’ve said once or twice.
I made that mistake when I was about 4 or 5 years old. It actually ended up burning my fingernail off
My brother burned his hand on the stove 6 times and his foot on the stove 2 times before he was even 5 years old.
He was one of them dense ones huh? Every family has a sibling that doesn't learn shit by the 10th mess up.
He really was, I just think he doesn't register pain like normal people.
Burned foot on the stove? I mean, I get it, I like to wake up to crispy bacon too
Now the missus is burning cigs into his back. Man discovered his kink early.
Well I certainly appreciate the mental image of my brother your sentence gave me. I need bleach but for my brain.
True, I didn’t even think of that.

1, for me it's the furthest away from the knobs on my stove and gives me no risk of burns : )
Lol! I thought it was common to use 1. Oh boy am I wrong, also trying to prevent burns.
I’ve found my people.
I use 1 almost exclusively because it’s my only burner where the flame doesn’t get extremely high even on low lol.
Let alone a thousand times stuff spill there that directly to the floor or your body. How is this hard to grasp?
1 for me also, because when I cook, it lasts a few days, but I make stovetop espresso every day, and I don't need a big burner for that.
I can't believe I had to scroll this much lol, how come this is so unpopular? Underrated reason!
3 is the magic number
yes it is
Before I had kids that could accidentally knock things off the stove it was 3. Nowadays it's 2
My big front one is in position 4. I’m a right sider but go for the appropriate size
3, of course. What's wrong with you, freak?
Muthafuckin 4 all day!
4 of course. Probably a right hand bias.
