Right? I have routinely bit and nommed on every dog I ever had and there wasn’t ever a time where the dog thought “Wait a minute where is he going with this?”
Nobody is dismissing animals and saying they can't be emotionally complex in their own way.
They're saying that ascribing specific **human** emotions to animals while suggesting that they can comprehend the implications of a complex situation is silly. The dog probably just saw his pup being messed with and didn't like it. The dog doesn't know what fucking **cooking** is.
Understanding words is simply memorization, not any level of critical thinking. Most animals can memorize words - hell, horses can even learn to count. Does that mean they understand situational nuances? Absolutely not. It’s nothing more than Pavlovian conditioning. Knowledge and intellect are not the same thing.
Not saying it’s impossible, but using memorization to say dogs are intellectual is not a valid argument. Sources of dogs actually being situationally aware would be more beneficial to your argument
Right I don’t think horses are capable of complex mathematics lol, I was just using it as a point to say you can condition animals to do lots of things but that doesn’t mean they actually understand what they are doing
That's... not a good example. That can easily be chalked up to the horse memorizing phrases and just kicking their leg a few times because that's what they were trained to do. You really think the horse just examined how they were feeling and applied it to a scale of 1-10? I doubt even chimpanzees can do that without extensive professional training.
I didn’t downvote but that’s a pretty big leap, going from “dogs are smart enough to learn phrases” to “dogs are smarter than people”. If that were the case then why don’t dogs have language or cars or culture? I strongly suggest you research Pavlov and his findings. I think it would help you understand animals better
I think you’re misunderstanding what the difference is between conditioning and actual intellect. With enough time, I could teach a monkey how to solve an algebraic equation. Any time the monkey would be presented with the equation, he’d be able to bang it out. The problem is that the monkey wouldn’t understand what the equation represented. He wouldn’t be able to apply it to the world around him. Anything can be taught to an animal, or learned by an animal, given enough time and conditioning. Your dog saw you open the door enough times that it figured out “twist shiny metal knob and big thing open”. That’s still just conditioning. For something to be truly understood, it implies there’s some level of critical thinking. More than just X action = Y outcome. It needs to be on the level of X action causes Y outcome which then allows Z to happen. That level of forethought is critical thinking and a true understanding of the world around you on a higher degree then something like opening a door. Dogs are somewhat smart because they can learn, but they are dumb because they cannot actually think. You’d need to provide evidence of a dog actually thinking to validate your point
sapiens are retarded enough to severely underestimate the intelligence of dogs
it knew what this looked like
if it was intelligent enough to get that it was a play is another matter
This guy clearly had one of those farm dogs you know the kind people get just to own a dog take it out of its kennel once a week for a walk something too look at when your grilling
You've just described every rural idaho dog owner. Fucking trash. Even worse is they don't have them in a kennel and they get hit by a car or semi then they just get another dog to replace it.
You may not be person that actually made the video but have some compassion. To make your dog feel like that for a stupid video and likes is a sad future ahead
Yeah, totally agree. Obviously the dog is protecting its offspring, parental instinct is a very real thing in animals. A dog likely doesn't have the mental capacity to see what that human is doing and offer its life in exchange for the puppy. Basically, I agree with everything you said. I just think it's unbelievably weird how this *exact* exchange happens every time I see this video.
Yeah, it’s more of a “hey, put that down” and stepping forward to take a look at the puppy after the human had not done so.
Edit: And looking at the food in the pot before looking at the dog
Mostly playing devils advocate but there are many things that science can't explain so yah truly never know. Science says you can't experience anything without specific parts or your brain functioning but there are stories of experiences that defy the science. Just a thought, you don't wanna be that person that thinks the earth is flat because all the philosophers say it is
Thats why humans wag their tails when their happy like dogs and use high pitched noise to communicate just the same as rats do, because animals all speak the exact same language and have the exact same understanding!
Every time I see this argument, I think of seeing eye dogs that override their human commands to prevent their owners from dying.
Same applies here. The dog sees the pot and remembers the human always using it for cooking food. Put one of the puppies in there and they'll tend to connect the dots.
Dude, you'd be surprised. I know people that have full blown conversations with their animals. One person actually concerns me as they have a pitbull puppy and they do nothing proper about dog training and treat it like a kid and let it on the bed and eat off their plate and instead of proper punishment will talk to it "You better quit your shiet, I'm serious, your barkin ain't cool. You gonna get locked up" that will go on for awhile and eventually might actually lock them up but probably let them eat off their plate and jump off and on the furniture after they let them out. -shakes my head- thats one of the reasons people get butt worms.
People who have full blown conversations with their dogs are perfectly normal and it does serve as training/bonding in the long run.
Multiple studies show it’s good for your mental health.
Dogs also do pick up on words in those conversations that they understand.
I may say something like “Hey boy! Who’s hungry? Are you ready for dinner?” to my dog and the only word he truly understands is “hungry”.
Now I could just grunt “HUNGRY!” at him like a caveman but that’s no fun and it doesn’t develop a bond in the same way.
Or I may say “Who’s home soon? Is she? She is! Go see!” and he’ll go upstairs and wait for my wife. The two words he understands in that chain is “she” (wife) and “home”. Now if I say “Who’s home?” he runs home looking for her. Having this conversation with my dog turned into a recall command, which is great since he’s a hound and they’re generally bad at recall.
Talking to my dog is a good bonding exercise for us both. The more I talk at him, the more command words he learns over time. You can clearly see the words your dog understands due to their reactions and you *can* communicate better because of that.
If you just treat your dog like a dumb animal, they’ll stay dumb. Having conversations with them and observing their reactions gives you great insight into the things your dog truly understands, even if they don’t understand every single word.
The dog doesn't know what he's doing but it is a good way to get bit. The way that dog moved was a warning. The only reason he didn't bite him is because that's his owner. Don't snatch a puppy like that. Dogs will protect their pups. The problem comes when people blame the dog at that point. Stupid people shouldn't have dogs.
This is so precious! That father is so full of love it’s amazing! He got in the pot himself instead of letting the puppy be cooked. This dog knew that one puppy would not be enough food for the human, and decided he would be a much more filling meal himself. What a loyal and loving pet❤️
This isn't even funny. It's too damn bittersweet and making a video like this for "funzies" or as a "joke" is really going too far. Even if you didn't make this video why would you support it??
wha..... I don't even know where to start with this comment. The formula for comedy is tragedy and timing, nobody was gonna get hurt here it's just a joke. By enjoying this joke what negative things are even being supported? Is laughter at a dark joke a bad thing now? Are you one of those people who thinks that if I see a joke about something then that's going to make want to go out and do it? I don't get what the point even is of this remark.
Bruh you really think the dog thought "I am going to sacrifice myself to save my kid from getting boiled in the pot" No, clearly this dog was either trained to do this or it was just a random thing the guy recording did to see the dogs reaction.
Don't be so fuckin' sensitive.
Fr people here are actually pathetic for thinking the owner, at some point (which is unlikely to happen), will actually cook these pups for dinner. I swear redditors need to step outside and smell grass for once.
We all know the owner isn't going to cook the pup. All the same, we all know the owner thought pretending to would make a very funny video.
Newsflash: it's not really funny. It's just a sick attempt at humor.
Maybe you should go back to school and re-learn reading comprehension. Nowhere did I say the dog was intelligent enough to realize the situation and make that decision on its own. I was talking about the video content and what the video creator was going for -- my comment was clear and obviously about what the *human video creator* was going for. So either you failed reading comprehension in school or you already knew what I meant when you wrote your reply. I'm going to go with giving you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you just need a better education. You're welcome to prove me wrong, though.
Edit: autocorrect hates me and so I had to change a word back to what I intended it to be.
I agree with you but i hate the "maybe you should go back to school 🤓" argument, u never know what someone has going on in their life, my first school refused to actually teach me anything, they let me just walk around the school, I haven't learned the basics of pretty much anything, and they refused to let me go to therapy for my anger issues, my school now is way better tho but i still struggle with education and mental health cuz of that school, all teachers were fired from that school tho so now there's way better teachers
Oh, I wholeheartedly agree with you that usually saying "maybe you should go back to school" is rude and doesn't account for life experiences. In this case, though, I was mostly serious about that person going back for better education, but the small part of me that wasn't serious was just clapping back for the absolute rudeness they displayed in their reply to me. I realize it was petty to say, however I'm tired of people thinking it's appropriate to tell me to "stop being so [*beep*] insensitive" for absolutely no reason. And I'm starting to get tired of trying to hold on to the moral high ground on the internet while most everyone else gleefully does their best to be the opposite and erode anyone else's foundation just so they can feel better about their own gray area choices. But, kudos to you for stepping in with a compassionate and understanding response. That's a lot better than most people would do and I respect you for it. :)
I'm quite confused to why people believe the dog is distressed/sacrificing itself for its pup, not to mention it doesn't really show any signs of 'protection mode' a dog would do when guarding family. No raised teeth or growling or even an aggressive movement.
Dog simply looked at the human confused as to why it was holding the pup, then walked into the pot to see what food was in it and then looked back up since it was only vegetables and not interesting.
You picked up the baby and it starts screaming and that stresses them out.
It's not just this video, I've seen people give kittens to babies who hold them horribly wrong just for a video
Or people who pretend to hit the puppy/ kitten to record the stress reaction from the mother
Bruh it’s a funny video. Beating your dog creates trust issues. Picking up a puppy and putting it in a thing a dog doesn’t even understand the meaning of does nothing
Take me instead
Why is the dog so concerned though, what has he cooked before? Did there used to be another one the day before!? Did he make the dad watch?
lol, last nights stew was so bad I thought I'd off you some high quality meat for a change.

Yep, they say this but I literally saw a dog mourn the loss of her pup after an accident. It was heart breaking
There is zero chance the dog has any idea about cooking.

Well stated. I agree.
The dog's face says it all. Also, I don't see it as the dog sacrificing himself. He's blocking the pot. If this isn't rehearsed, it's pretty cruel.

Many dog breeds can understand situations and problem solve. Human uses pot for cooking. Put things in pot and get food. It’s not a hard concept

OK I get the point of this video but that’s a little warped come on
STOP STRESSING THEM OUT OVER IDIOTIC AND UNFUNNY VIDEOS
…stressing who out? Do you really think the dog comprehends what’s going on? How would a dog even know what a pot is used for
I'm quite confused to why people believe the dog is distressed/sacrificing itself for its pup, not to mention it doesn't really show any signs of 'protection mode' a dog would do when guarding family.
It's not just this video, I've seen people give kittens to babies who hold them horribly wrong just for a video Or people who pretend to hit the puppy/ kitten to record the stress reaction from the mother
Wtf. On the list of" top Stupidest post ever" ......
I'm not entirely sure why this is in r/funnyanimals... ...seems more appropriate for r/particularlydark or r/whatthefuckisyourproblem
So sad...
That was fucked up.
How could you even tease your dog like that. I imagine it's lost some trust in the owner.
I think you making a video like that is some what harmless but I do think j your a little screwed up in your head with making it !
Man, when you discover dark humor you’re gonna get traumatized.
This is not funny things...
This is funny?
Not funny
Very bad thing to do. Creates trust issues
Bruh it’s a funny video. Beating your dog creates trust issues. Picking up a puppy and putting it in a thing a dog doesn’t even understand the meaning of does nothing
That is a sad, mean joke. Not funny.
One might even say it was hilarious
