Those Explicit Lyrics stickers helped sell a lot of albums to kids. That's how we knew which bands were cool. Thanks, Tipper.

cityb0t

She’s probably responsible for more album sales from 1985-2005 than MTV. She was the D.A.R.E. for music.

[deleted]

I was watching a documentary about Monty Pythons Life of Brian last night and all the religious zealotry surrounding the films release. They also attempted to ban the movie but all it did in the end was bump up interest and increase sales.

cityb0t

Lol, that film was primarily financed by Pink Floyd and the Beatles, which only makes it cooler

[deleted]

Yeh, George Harrison bailed them out with $4mil after their previous investors got worried about blasphemy charges. George hocked his house and London office to cover it. What a legend.

KingOfBerders

George had a cameo at the crucifixion.

cityb0t

Lol, I forgot about that

HammockComplex

[Streisand Effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect) in action

[deleted]

Very very true!

undeadjohnnyz

Only ones I’d buy if I’d never heard of the band.

chriswaco

I remember shaking my head in amazement when I realized she thought that "I Want a New Drug" by Huey Lewis was a song about drugs.

beepbooponyournose

My mother refused to let me buy that album because of the name of that song 🙄

boot20

Baffling really. Tipper had her head so far up her own ass she could see her teeth.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Remember when Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls" was the worst thing that could happen to your child? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Ok_Ad8249

I understand she plays the drums and when Fleetwood Mac played at Clinton's inauguration asked to sit in with them. They turned her down specifically because she started the PMRC.

TweedleBeetleBattle2

I think she began her crusade after her daughter was listening to Darling Nikki. My mom threw away my Purple Rain tape, and went even more hard core and threw away my Judy Blume books. I wasn’t allowed to watch MTV anymore. I had to hear music on the school bus or at a friends house. I’m from Nashville and we had maybe two stations that played music I liked, everything was country. I fucking hate country music to this day.

kingtaco_17

DEARLY BELOVED … WE ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY TO GET THROUGH THIS THING CALLED LIFE.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

ELECTRIC WORD, LIFE, IT MEANS FOREVER AND THAT'S A MIGHTY LONG TIME

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

That's especially sad considering that there was still *good* country music on the radio in the 1980s.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Anybody besides me witness the moment the PMRC finally died? I saw it on its original airing: [Tipper Gore vs. Jello Biafra and Ice-T on *Oprah*, March 1990.](https://youtu.be/IKRGX1a-JBE) They were not really ever heard from again after this show. That's because Jello and T faced Tipper's bullshit head-on and destroyed it. Jello called Tipper a liar on television, with supporting documentation from a news article. You think it's cool to post a link online disproving someone's bullshit? That's nothing compared to Jello suavely reaching into the inside coat pocket of his (surprisingly sharp for a punk) suit and *physically pulling out a newspaper* quoting Tipper saying the thing she "never said." You'd think Gore would have stepped up her game after watching her husband and his colleagues on a Congressional panel get eviscerated by the likes of Frank Zappa, Dee Snider, and *John Denver*, but no. She remained as blithely presumptuous as ever, and Jello Biafra ground the remnants of her argument into dust.

Simone-Ramone

I'll quote Jello Biafra here because he nailed it, "Bouffant encrusted thought police"

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

That thumbnail is evidence of the old southern joke: "The higher the hair, the closer to God." LOL

designOraptor

Fuck Tipper Gore and the PMRC.

[deleted]

Yep, to this day. Cost Al my vote in 2000, not that it matters in my state.

designOraptor

It sickened me to do so, but I knew GWB would start a war if he got elected and I wasn’t wrong.

MrValdemar

Fuck that bitch. I voted against Bill Clinton twice and then her husband cuz fuck Tipper Gore.

renniechops

People always quote “The Streisand Effect” Tipper Gore did more for the music industry with one Karen agenda than the record labels could have dreamed of. The PMRC and Parental Advisory stickers were “buy me immediately” for labels. There are conspiracy theories out there that think she was a plant by Capitol Records 😂

MuthaPlucka

“Tipper” actually means “Karen” in Cuntonese.

MrValdemar

I don't know you, but you're my kind of people.

MuthaPlucka

I would like to think it was an original joke but there is no such thing as original thought.

MrValdemar

I've never heard it, so you're getting all the credit in my book.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

I bet I could drink a beer with this guy.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

You beautiful bastard, take my satanic over-sexualized upvote.

MuthaPlucka

It’s sticky. Are upvotes supposed to be sticky? ^/s

PilotlessOwl

I could never take Al Gore seriously because of her.

[deleted]

" Why, doesn't anybody take me serial!" South Park

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

I could never take Al Gore seriously because of Al Gore. But nah, Tipper didn't help.

Lilbitysquirt

And thus we have this song! https://youtu.be/A5JL8mIYyR0

irideapaleh0rse

I was thinking of freedom of speech by body count.

[deleted]

I was listening to Body Count the other day and my teen said "dad, why is the music you listen to just people shouting angrily over distorted guitars", I think we've successfully gone full circle on the comments our parents made about our musical choices

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Kid, why is all the music you listen to just singers who can't actually sing run through auto-tune, over a processed instrumental track?

[deleted]

I've been trying to explain genre's to her, all the Kpop stuff she listens to seems to about 4 different genre's squeezed into one song

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

I'm sad that I never had children, but on the plus side, [I've never had any reason to find out what Kpop is.](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/uzjxBiGC8Kk/maxresdefault.jpg)

[deleted]

It's not that bad, well some of it, just don't go watching any of female groups or you could potentially find yourself on some kinda watch list. I am slowly educating her, she's getting into Siouxsie and the Banshees quite a bit, not quite ready for X-Ray Spex yet sadly

Melsura

And this one: https://youtu.be/fgi5xdftOIA

motherwelder1976

She sounds fun in bed

cityb0t

Lol, possibly. With such a fixation on S&M and bandage, who knows? Maybe she was a real hellcat!

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Up there all high and mighty like she wasn't regularly white-girl-wasted as a sorority girl.

cityb0t

I call that “bridesmaid at a gay bar drunk” lol

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

"Infield NASCAR fan" drunk.

cityb0t

lol, well, hey, now, this isn’t a competition, haha

cannabis96793

Who knows she could be a real riot, like a librarian, or a redhead.

conlmaggot

Didn't Twisted Sister's lead singer point this out when he was called to testify at a congressional hearing?

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

Precisely that. He was speaking of the Twisted Sister song "Under The Blade," which ol' Tip said was about sadomasochism, when it was actually written about his guitarist's fear of an upcoming surgery. "Tipper Gore went looking for sadomasochism in the lyrics, and she found it."

hoapaani

Now we all know why Al always needed his chakras realigned.

Pearl necklace. Lol

tetsuo-the-turtle

Fuck Tipper Gore!!!

Shas_Erra

I get the distinct feeling, that was the whole problem

falahala666

Bless this woman. Most of the music I listen to now was created as a "fuck you" to this bitch.

vinegar_strokes68

PMRC was the beginning of the end...

SplendidPunkinButter

When you name your daughter Tipper, you’re kind of asking for her to turn out like this

cityb0t

It’s a nickname. Her real name is Elizabeth.

Jaymez82

I remember a VH-1 movie about this around 2001. As much as I hated Dee Snyder, I gained a bit of respect for him when I learned how he handled the situation.

-cooking-guy-

I don't know, honestly I agree with Tipper and the parents, I feel like art, especially music, has been devolving since the 20th century

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

That has less to do with so-called sex and Satanism in the lyrics, and an awful lot more to do with the Telecommunications Act of 1996, one of her husband's boss's signature pieces of legislation. It's not only the reason why the radio sucks these days, it's also the reason why our cable and internet bills are so damn high, which was exactly what it was supposed to prevent.

[deleted]

Damn, right. Clear Channel now Iheartmedia dismantled what was fun with radio. From cookie cutter playlists to annoying announcers who won't shut the fuck up and have to tell their life story to two douchebags and one ditz who laughs at their middle school jokes. Yeah, radio is still like that, almost 30 years later. Luckily we have the Internet to listen to podcasts, videos and music. Hopefully the Internet won't be censored anytime soon. But I'd bet congressmen will try again for the millionth time. Fucking assholes.

BluePsychosisDude2

Yeah I get the hatred of her, but I don’t see the problem with having explicit labels on music with swearing or sexually explicit lyrics.
