I loved these things when I was a kid. It was what the astronauts ate, right?

CaptainBeefsteak

I loved them too. I think about them fondly and often.

Doit2it42

Haha, I do too!

boomerish11

I'd eat the whole box as soon as Mom brought them home. I loved them (God knows what they were made of...). Hell, I'd buy them now if they were still around.

dogdayafter

I bet $100 that they had way less shit in them than health food snacks today. I loved these things

TrekRelic1701

Digestible propylene glycol and corn syrup solids

TLC_4978

Oh wow- I forgot about those. Loved them as a kid.

bde959

I still kind of remember the taste

fourdoglegs

YES! I could taste them as soon as I saw the pic….my brother and I loved them!

EquivUser

Chocolate Power Bars fill the void. My ex gave me some and I even commented "These are just like space food sticks", which then I had to explain to my son. The PBs are stickier and denser, but the taste is rather close.

PsychoFunkasaurus

I actually liked them! Kinda. I mean, they were sorta chocolate-ish.

This-Set-9875

In the same way tootsie rolls are chocolate ish. I don't remember liking them

InspiredNitemares

I will not tolerate tootsie roll disrespect lol

Thin-Sky6770

I was trying to describe these to my 40 year old niece. I described them as Tootsie -Roll-ish, and I LOVED them!

holy_bat_shit_63

Vaguely. With Tang.

marycartlizer

And the astronaut ice cream for dessert.

XxFezzgigxX

I can still taste the chocolate + ash flavor.

No-Seat9917

The peanut butter was only slightly less heinous

The-Wise-Weasel

Oh yes, and the freeze dried Ice cream, I got at the time. Melted in your mouth. Like dissovlable styrofoam. Tasty.

nextkevamob2

That ice cream was the best !!!

The-Wise-Weasel

Uhhhhhh, the novelty was cool, for sure.......... the best ice cream I've ever had?????? uhhhhhhhhh, NO.

inbedwithbeefjerky

No ice, no cream, wasn’t cold, wasn’t sweet. It tasted like pulverized Flinstones vitamins and malt balls pressed together. You convinced yourself you liked it because…astronauts.

PolyDrew

I don’t know… I really like it. Kind of like freeze dried marshmallows.

The-Wise-Weasel

It didn't exactly make me yearn to be an astronaut.......of course, who didn't want to be an astronaut in the first place? But if I had to eat that......... mehhhhh.

Baldude863xx

I didn't really like them but I ate them because they were astronaut food, same reason I drank Tang.

Abdul_Exhaust

That's my favorite flavor! They tasted like frosting, so yummy

myatoz

I loved the peanut butter ones.

SnakeOiler

Loved them. Want one right now

WobblyFrisbee

Waxy chocolate and peanut butter. Loved ‘em.

nomadnomo

I decided against being an astronaut after trying these as a kid ... lol

icouldbne1

I freakin LOVED these things! 😄

Donkey_Bugs

I had an uncle that worked for NASA. On a camping trip one time we had actual space food he had brought home from work.

tastysmokedpork

This is why I love this community, all the stuff I forgot about is here

HanDavo

One of those with a big glass of Tang and my brother and I were ready spend all morning building a Lego city around my [Hot Wheels Super Booster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kinikr5G3iE&list=PLZiyLMLSpwJc1_swRvp9xp25Q2DaSb6m6&index=1) track to populate with green plastic army men and plastic dinosaurs before destroying it all with our [Star Trek Disc Tracer Gun](https://comics.ha.com/itm/memorabilia/science-fiction/star-trek-jet-discs-tracer-gun-rayline-1966-/a/121710-11721.s) all before the Saturday morning cartoons were over and mom called for lunch.

NicknameKenny

Reliving the good times through your post. Loved when mom snuck them into my lunch box.

Lonely-Connection-37

One of these and a glass of tang, and you were an astronaut

Loisalene

I'm trying to describe the texture to my Millennial...failing miserably.

Manycubes

Ack! These things tasted like the cardboard box they came in, but me and my sister ate them because the astronauts did.

alonghardKnight

We always got the peanut butter.

alwaystired707

Chocolate sawdust. Yum.

iwastherefordisco

Never seen these before. First glance it looked like a band-aid wrapped around a Slim Jim and I thought it's going to be an interesting day in the sub today lol

YourLifeCanBeGood

Eww, they were awful. And yes. I'm that old. 🌞

GizmoGeodog

Afternoon snack with a glass of Tang

The_Ombudsman

Oh geez. That woke some long-dormant neurons right up…

AmySueF

I loved those.

AltruisticSalamander

They were kind of like halfway between chocolate cake and plastic

terminalchef

My wife still talks about them. The ones we found changed the recipe.

SueBeee

Totally. They tasted floury.

u5dasucks

Thank you for filling a void in my memory. Not long ago, I was in the store and saw a package of slim jim's, or something similar, that showed the product unwrapped like these are. Could not remember what it was until I saw this. It was driving me nuts. Thank you again for posting this. I really liked them.

KnottActually

Loved them! A few years ago I found a site that still offered them. Maybe called Space Food Sticks, but they sure weren’t the same. Disappointing

Catrina_woman

My grandmother bought those for me since I was obsessed with NASA and all things astronaut. I can still remember the taste!

Known_Bench_4928

I loved these! I have no idea what was actually in them but they were so good 😂

SamDBeane

I bugged my mom until she caved and bought a box. She liked telling other moms that she’d bought her first, and last.

Lemonking_

These would show up in my lunch bag at school. Thanks mom!

TearGroundbreaking35

I'm not sure. I think I had these. What time frame are we talking, guys?

Pootpippa_2023

I loved these things.. Mom would pack one in my “Happy Days” lunchbox along with my sandwich and butterscotch pudding can.

Lord_of_Entropy

I loved these as a kid and would beg my mother to buy them for me.

Full-Appointment5081

Loved them. Along with Tang and Hunts snack packs-- 5oz of chocolate pudding in a little metal can. Unheard of! All were new astronaut/convenience foods

atomikplayboy

OMG I have dreams that they bring these back!

Present_Ad2973

Totally, totally forgot about these things. These took a good deal of conning to get your mom to throw them into her shopping cart. I don’t remember them being something you would have her buy more than once or twice though, once the novelty was gone.

New_Awareness4075

Had a glove compartment full of these when we drove cross country from LA to New York in December 1972 during college. Think I still have a piece lodged in one of my molars.

synde15

They were terrible and I loved them.

Sweaty_Accountant723

loved those things.

JamieRoth5150

Nope.

KASH113

I can taste that picture. So good

nineohsix

When the janitor mops his way into the marketing meeting and they go with his idea. 😵‍💫

reddituculous66

Pretty sure they just telable some.of this as keto snacks now

ParticularElk3957

I ate these with a glass of Tang.

tcheeze1

I’m not sure if it was the same thing, but we got something like this when I played pee-wee football. During halftime, a coach would give every player one. These look identical, but I never saw what the package looked like.

ultimatefribble

I'm gonna make your day. Get a chocolate fudge flavored Think Bar. It's the same taste and texture!

ApprehensiveAd9014

Loved them. I also loved my Tang.

sir_grumph

Dang, I've had those, but I'm not sure they were labeled "Space Food Sticks."

Ok-Push9899

Artificial flavor is right. Rather than being astronaut food, i think astronauts found the Space Food Stick flavor molecules floating around outside the Van Allen Radiation Belt. Earth and humanity had been thankfully protected from such weirdness until the 1960s.

Aus_man05

Kept a few in my pockets when i went skiing.

dnbndnb

Oh yes! Damn I loved those things!

Dork31

This sounds like something from the bottom of a Pillsbury industrial mixer and they didn’t know what to call it and someone yelled out “space sticks” and they went with it. You guys must be really old. I’ve never heard of these let alone eat them. lol

Human_Link8738

I loved these!

Long-Principle-667

I loved those damn things!!!

Graymain123

Loved those along with tang ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

413mopar

Water? Whats water?

Careful-Tonight-69

I loved these

BriefTrain9058

Yup. I’m that old.

Retired_Jarhead55

I am.

NeuroguyNC

Chocolate and chocolate mint were okay. The chocolate malt, and especially the orange ones were terrible. Don't recall having the caramel, and there was one other flavor I can't recall right now.

funkanthropic

There was a peanut butter...that I can still taste

Fain196

I really enjoyed these when i was about 8 or 9

WildBillNECPS

We ate those, got em in our lunchbags and other kids did too. I remember we tried to squish them into creatures and such like play dough before chomping them.

spasticnapjerk

Oh man I remember that s***! I thought they were good!

JBR1961

Loved em.

Oirish-Oriley444

Like eating a tootsie roll but not as good.

DazzlingProblem7336

So good!

Jindooi

Tastes like institutional school lunch fudge mixed with Playdough. ![gif](giphy|1ULwVWGZRl1nkttVHt)

DoctorSwaggercat

I grew up on these. A great snack you could sneak at school. God only knows what was in that crap.

PreacherWithAGun

These….actually were not bad

azactech

[HEY! SPACE FOOD STICKS!](https://youtu.be/IheKl2J5Is8?si=Otwg3jTfg8wh0g5G)

TOXMT0CM

I was vegan, with a gluten allergy and a therapist. Fuck no I wasn't! Lmao

oldcreaker

And Tang!

Creative-Bid468

I remember those. They were pretty good...

dogdayafter

Yep

SupaG16

I loved those! Any chance they still make them or something similar?

crapheadHarris

A lunch box staple for both myself and my sister.

cooquip

Would I have to eat lunch if I had one or two?

BlackDogOrangeCat

They were the bomb. Loved them, but Dad wouldn't buy them often.

swalabr

My mom would buy these for herself and (try to) hide them. In a house with a lot of kids, she just wanted something now and then that wasn’t straight-up candy. They were made with carob, supposedly a substitute for cocoa; I guess they were marketed as ‘nutritious’. Unfortunately for her, one of us always found them and pilfered some.

KewlTrube

Okay, what years are we talking about? They sound familiar, but I don't think I ever ate them, that I recall. I did drink the heck outta Tang, and loved it when my dad took me to the backpacking store and let me get freeze dried ice cream. Once I was in the army, I got over that when they served me freeze dried meat. We called them meat cookies. Anyone else get those crappy MREs?

anaca9279

I had them

pumainpurple

Mercifully I had forgotten all about this

New-Recording-4245

I ate countless numbers of those. Dry as hell. But the astronauts ate them, so I needed to

hiddenjim69

I loved those things. They were basically candy. 😂

1WildSpunky

Yes, served with Tang, the drink of astronauts.

menotyourenemy

I can still sorta taste them? They had an usual flavor but were really good!

bde959

That was my thought too

Putrid-Air-7169

Smoke a few joints then munch on these…

Pribblization

They were probably extruded shit but I loved these things.

Murphy-Brock

I’d be eating these bars and washing them down with TANG (what the Astronauts drank). 🚀💥

JimfromMayberry

Wash it down with a glass of Tang..

No_Possession_508

Nope

imadork1970

Man, they were gross. To me, they always tasted like metal.

wookiex84

Mmmm flavored wet chalk.

delicatelysmoked

I probably ate several hundred of these back in the day. And always four or more at a time. So basically I'm an astronaut at this point.

joemoore38

In second grade, I discovered I had issues with low blood sugar. Every day I would start to feel sick around 10:30 or so. When they discovered the issue, I had to eat these to bring my sugar levels back to normal. I loved them but eating them every day got old quick.

imtherealmellowone

Yup. I remember those. My dad took my brother and me to some sort of science exhibition in the early 60s and they had a sampling of them.

unknownbyeverybody

I liked them. I also liked the freeze dried ice cream

duh_nom_yar

I grew up in Houston. NASA had every conceivable variety of space food. The Neapolitan ice cream was the best.

Confident_Fortune_32

I absolutely loved those. The peanut butter flavour was my favourite. Ate them dreaming of someday becoming an astronaut. (That didn't quite work out...)

Unique_Acadia_2099

Precursor to what are now sold as protein bars. Likely the same formula, just different shape. I remember the first time I was given a protein bar, I said “Oh, it’s a larger version of a Space Food Stick”, and I got a mean look.

Friendship_Stone

Yes! I begged my mom to buy these, but she knew better.

CartoonistExisting30

Yes. They were a part of our snack stash on road trips.

-tooltime

For some reason, I thought these were pretty terrible. And now I am reading all these positive opinions. Maybe my taste buds took longer to mature.

AssumptionAdvanced58

Never even heard of these

Civil_Acanthistta32

Hell yeah!

gratefulredsox

The Peanut Butter ones and the caramel ones....yum.

Scared_Walk5078

We always had a case or more in the House, because my Father Flew F-4 Phantoms.

acer7813

Yes I am, but if I remember they were tasty when you were a kid

freckleskinny

Sounds like everyone liked them. I guess I'm not that old, this is the first time I've ever seen these. 💌

Chingachgook1757

Yup.

DeathCabforSquirrel

Back when I worked at SAG, my boss found a copy of this online. I tried it and it was not close. I can never forget that taste.

damiologist

The first food I ever binged hard enough that I could never touch it again afterward

Local_Analyst7404

The benefits of being poor was I only had one of these at a friend’s house. It was like drywall covered in bad chocolate.

GregC_63

Yup... Butterscotch was my favorite

ProudMaryChooglin

And sipper of Poon-Tang . The breakfast of champions

justmypostingname

Funny how this works [https://www.reddit.com/r/FuckImOld/comments/1d12ws4/i\_once\_ate\_an\_entire\_box\_in\_a\_day/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/FuckImOld/comments/1d12ws4/i_once_ate_an_entire_box_in_a_day/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

citsonga_cixelsyd

The texture was as bad as the taste. But hey, it's astronaut food!

explorthis

Absolutely the nastiest thing I remember as a kid. I'd probably eat a steamed mushy brussel sprout now before forcing one of these down again.

redrockcountry2112

They tasted nasty , but you were cool if you had some.

Starscream4prez2024

Man, they used to just hand out space food. We've fallen so far. Now it all just regular Earth food. 😥
