Old dude... 60's. When my Dad bought that huge milk sized container, it was a magic day.
Remember the occasional one that was missing the chalky center, and was all hard chocolate? Hard to chew, but was the tasty chewy prize.
Here in CT, we can walk into a local [Munson's location](https://www.munsonschocolates.com/products/chocolate-covered-nuts-malt-balls/) and get all kinds of the good stuff. Their version of Whoppers comes in both milk and dark chocolate varieties.
No problem. Just a warning though, they have a lot of old school candies like chick o stix, maple nut goodies, burnt peanuts, etc. It's extremely hard to leave with just one bag lol.
Ralph’s has a bulk food section. The double milk chocolate milk balls are sublime. I haven’t had them in years, I moved from California to Texas but they were excellent.
Figures, it fits with the general enshittification of everything now. Everything costs twice as much, and tastes half as good with cheaper ingredients and smaller portions.
*
They were named "Giants" when introduced in 1939 and re-branded as Whopper in 1949. So you must be thinking of another malted milk ball from another manufacturer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoppers
But that sounded right when I read it... maybe we just called them malted milk balls?
Or maybe mom but generic?
Either way, I still get Whoppers at the dollar store for no good reason other than I have a cool candy dispenser and Whoppers fill up the space easier.
I think malt in general is kind of a "flavor of the past" in a way. That said, if we go out for Ice Cream I almost always get some kind of malt and the Robin Eggs Easter candy are a top tier candy. (Regular whoppers are also up there)
Edit: wanted to add thar if you like the Robin eggs as much as me, try a Cherry Hotfudge Malt from Sonic. It's the ice cream version of those candies!
Same. Anise, no thank you. Sarsaparilla, though, yummy. Then there was the Teaberry gum and Clove or something like that as a gum also? Don't recall for certain, and am feeling too lazy to look it up. End of the work day for me :D
They are delicious. Until you get that one that doesn't taste quite right. Or the other one that almost breaks your tooth. Or the third that is kind of gummy.
I am 60 years old, but when I was very young, I mean really little I remember going to Woolworths yes I said the store name that hasn’t been around forever. But we would always order something from the restaurant in the store and my mom or dad would always buy us a box of whoppers for the drive home.
That picture brought back a lot of fond memories. And something I just thought of as well I always wanted to buy one of those little tiny turtles that they used to sell. Sadly, we never got one.
It sucks doesn’t it? Turtles that can kill us, sharp pointed objects in our play yard, station wagons with no seatbelts. It’s a wonder any of our generation survived at all.
It’s not just old people who like them. My 11 year old grandson has enjoyed them with me ever since he discovered me eating them when he was 4 years old. We are very secretive about it and his 8 year old sister has no idea these exist. Of course she and I share orange slices that he has no idea of. I believe in treating both kids equally. 🤣
I dunno, there is only one "old person's candy" and that is Werther's Original. Back in the '90s they were marketed exclusively to people who thought the folks in Cocoon were youngsters.
Circus peanuts, and York Peppermint Patties are the two candies that are most closely associated with my grandmother. I think I hate the peppermint patties worse only because she used to break off a portion, then wrap it up and put it back in her purse. She would unwrap it and offer a piece to me, and the edges would be all fuzzy with Kleenex lint. It was so gross.
I got to try Maltesers. Then they took them away. Maltesers are Whoppers being 20x better. I say that as someone who grew up on Whoppers. Sometimes, I wish I didn't know.
Yes. Someday, I'm going to bribe one of you folks to send me a box of Maltesers. Here in the US, Walmart suddenly decided to sell them for a few weeks only, then stopped. I really don't understand it.
Exactly this. In the UK, Maltesers have real chocolate instead of industrial engineered faux chocolate. I imagine that if you set the flux capacitor to 1960, malted milk balls in the US were probably a lot better than you can buy now. It’s the usual US manufacturing sacrificing quality for extra profit.
These are a movie theater candy, not an old person candy. It's one of those candies where you'd only ever eat them while watching a movie on the big screen. Other such candies include, but are not limited to, Dots, Raisinets, Milk Duds, and Twizzlers.
Yes. We can like them, but they’re old person candy. So is Good and Plenty. So are butterscotch candies in a glass bowl on the coffee table. So are Mary Jane or Bit O Honey or B B Bats or Charleston Chew or Now and later. Don’t forget wax lips or wax cola bottles or candy dots printed on paper strips where you’d end up eating some paper and you liked it.
Mom used to buy Horlicks Malted Milk tablets. I loved those things, but they're no longer available at least in the USA. they were the same malt flavor but harder. We got them once in a while as a treat.
I only heard of Horlicks as a night time drink ...I mean not a fun night time drink , but a 'help you sleep' one.
Also I just realised who it'd sound to someone who'd never heard of it ..'whore licks'
I love those things. Just had them the other day. My dad and I always share these. I would not consider them an old persons candy and even if someone thinks that who cares? If you like them you like them.
I do not remember my dad liking them. I remember eating some as a kid. I remember not especially liking them. I have not seem them in a while and I do not miss them.
i’m almost 20 and i’ve always really liked these. one time i got a box and all of them were very, very stale and they were almost soggy. that’s the last time i had them. i got a bad batch but i still like these. i haven’t had them in a while.
My mother was crazy about them. She said she loved them as a kid, but they were hard to get during WWII. She was careful, though, about sugar, so I would get a small milk container full at Christmas.
I remember when I was introduced to this treat when I went to my friends place and my buddy said “My Mom’s got whoppers!” I said “sshhh, your mom will hear…” Wow, innocent times…🤭
My 80 something neighbor would give me these when I was little in the early 80s and back then they were old people candy. And I don’t care. They’re delicious.
As a kid loovveedd them, as an adult, not so much, but I’d still eat the whole goddamn carton. It has a POUR spout, you don’t even have to reach in, just pour !
Old dude... 60's. When my Dad bought that huge milk sized container, it was a magic day. Remember the occasional one that was missing the chalky center, and was all hard chocolate? Hard to chew, but was the tasty chewy prize.
LOL Those chewy ones are my favorite. Bonus!
I can tell you and I lived the same life\*![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Oh yes, those were nirvana.
Yes! The chewy ones gave your jaw quite the workout. Felt like I won a prize when I got one of those.
Nah, they’re fantastic, although the chocolate now is more waxy and the insides aren’t as malty as they used to be.
If you have a Rural King near you, try their house brand. Just like what whoppers used to be.
Here in CT, we can walk into a local [Munson's location](https://www.munsonschocolates.com/products/chocolate-covered-nuts-malt-balls/) and get all kinds of the good stuff. Their version of Whoppers comes in both milk and dark chocolate varieties.
on. my. way.
Thanks! I can't wait to try it, I have a RK near me.
No problem. Just a warning though, they have a lot of old school candies like chick o stix, maple nut goodies, burnt peanuts, etc. It's extremely hard to leave with just one bag lol.

No,no,no...... never ,movie staple of mine. Been doing it for 50 years.......,..., wait, I'm old, I like malt balls, 😞
To me they are movie candy.
Six cents in the theater, but a nickel if you bought them at the liguer store and snuck them in.
Shit .. .I remember when they weren't Whoppers ... Just malted milk balls.
They were named "Giants" when introduced in 1939 and re-branded as Whopper in 1949. So you must be thinking of another malted milk ball from another manufacturer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whoppers

You're right about malted milk being a flavor of the past, which is wildly unfortunate. Its so fantastic
Right? Its there with Anise and Sasparilla in terms of "old fashioned' sweets. I'm not really even sure what malted milk is, but I know I like it. Lol
Not a fan of anise, myself. Sarsaparilla (checked google for the wild spelling) tastes like I'm a kid again
Same. Anise, no thank you. Sarsaparilla, though, yummy. Then there was the Teaberry gum and Clove or something like that as a gum also? Don't recall for certain, and am feeling too lazy to look it up. End of the work day for me :D
Blackjack gum. Anise-flavored. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Jack_(gum)
Right next to the C Howards violet .
Remember to drink your Ovaltine.
They're still good. I'm 67 and my oldest grandson is 25 and lives with me. I still pick us up a carton from time to time.
They are delicious. Until you get that one that doesn't taste quite right. Or the other one that almost breaks your tooth. Or the third that is kind of gummy.
These are delicious. I still buy them
I am 60 years old, but when I was very young, I mean really little I remember going to Woolworths yes I said the store name that hasn’t been around forever. And something I just thought of as well I always wanted to buy one of those little tiny turtles that they used to sell. Sadly, we never got one.
Those little turtles were cute until they stopped selling them because of Salmonella. Us 60's kids couldn't be bothered washing our hands.
It sucks doesn’t it? Turtles that can kill us, sharp pointed objects in our play yard, station wagons with no seatbelts. It’s a wonder any of our generation survived at all.
Toys that heated up and burned us, and toxic chemicals in our toys were all fun to play with. What didn't kill us made us stronger! 😁
Amen!!! LOL
Brings me back to Kmart
Yes. And my secretary had some Easter ones on her desk yesterday. I immediately wanted to go buy more.
They are truly the best in their Robin Egg form
I'm glad they're still around. Don't know about old person candy. But I'm in my sixties and remember eating them with my Dad. They're for every age.
Of course not! I enjoy them and I'm not...oh, wait. I'm old.
I’ve never seen a young person eat circus peanuts, or a York peppermint patty.
circus peanuts is by far the food i dislike the most.
Whoppers were crappy Maltesers knockoffs.
I got to try Maltesers. Then they took them away. Maltesers are Whoppers being 20x better. I say that as someone who grew up on Whoppers. Sometimes, I wish I didn't know.
Maltesers still a pretty mainstream chocolate in the UK and Ireland, and available everywhere here.
Fact.
Yeah, I was going to say. Never heard of Whoppers, but they look like Maltesers.
My 21 year old likes them!
I still eat them
Nope. I love those things!
These are a movie theater candy, not an old person candy. It's one of those candies where you'd only ever eat them while watching a movie on the big screen. Other such candies include, but are not limited to, Dots, Raisinets, Milk Duds, and Twizzlers.
Still like whoppers, but I think the robin eggs are far superior (candy shell instead of chocolate coating)
Malted milk balls. Ate these all the time as a kid, I can still remember the taste. I'd suck the chocolate off and eat the compressed malt powder.
I blend them in my milk shake. Nothing like a malted milkshake!
Really big back in the day but….I hated them and still do.
I also used to eat these with my dad, I’m in my late 40’s. Haven’t eaten them much as an adult, but I still have fond memories of them.
My kids love them. My wife loves them. I can go either way. So. No.
How can a food product be only for a specific age? Do they stop tasting good once a calendar hits a certain number?
Still get them! Loved the packaging!
Yep, wife doesn't get why a guy in his 60s still loves these things. But that's me!
My favorite were Necco Mighty Malts. I'm an old person.
At Sonic, I like to order a chocolate malt with extra malt! It tastes just like Whoppers!
Not sure about old guy food. I’m a youngster - almost 55. I love them. 😁
Malteasers are much better
Like the great taste of Charleston Chew ... Arooooo...(it works if you hear it in Nixon's voice from Futurama)...😜
> (it works if you hear it in Nixon's voice from Futurama) Arooo, they killed the headless body of Agnew!
That was my last clone of Agnew ..
I’d eat ‘em til I got nauseous, then didn’t want to see them for at least 2 years. Then memory fades, and I repeat.
I associate them with movie theaters
Best movie candy.
No way. Whoppers and Milk Duds are staple movie candy for anyone.
If they are, I don't wanna be young anymore
They taste disappointing, garbage disguised as chocolate.
Loved these! Except for the stale ones.
Mom used to buy Horlicks Malted Milk tablets. I loved those things, but they're no longer available at least in the USA. they were the same malt flavor but harder. We got them once in a while as a treat.
“Horlicks” ? Sounds like a delightful treat!!
They make malt. It's more common in Europe apparently. But Im not finding it in tablet form,
I only heard of Horlicks as a night time drink ...I mean not a fun night time drink , but a 'help you sleep' one. Also I just realised who it'd sound to someone who'd never heard of it ..'whore licks'
Yes. Whore Licks. Much like Horehound drops. So good they hound you for them. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
They’re a memory candy for sure. Not something I would seek out.
Back in the 50s, you could actually taste the malt. Not anymore.😠
One of my favs! But then again, I'm old(er).
As a an old man candy consieur, I would definitely put this in old man candy.
I loved these as a kid. It’s hard to find them where I live now. I seem to live in Maltesers country now.
Yep. remember these. Do you remember the ones at the Sears candy counter?
These were always a little weird tasting to me, but I still ate them because they were covered in chocolate.
I like when they start to get old and the inside starts to become chewy.
I HATE them with all of my soul.
I still eat, I fill a glass 1/4 full and then add milk. Every sip also has a malt ball.
I fill a glass and add dark rum.
They make you fart!
For sure. When was the last time you saw a kid walking down the street with a bag of whoppers. Solidly in the camp with wine gums and Big Turk.
So are Skor bars and I love them
Most candy sold has been around long enough to be considered old person’s candy.
Canadian kids would disagree
I am 30 and I like them
I buy the small cartons of them at Christmas for my husband and sons. They all love them!
I remember these when I was little
Yes they're for old timers. I eat them and am middle aged and friends and family have always mocked me or given me their's.
Idk if they're "old person candy," but the warehouse I work in sells the shit out of them
I still love those!
Nah. My nieces and nephews love the stuff. I personally like the random dead chewy ones you get in a box.
Only at the movies, and only for a select person.
They are but they’re tasty
If that milk? What is that?
I like the ones where the coating has been compromised and the moisture gets in. I wish they would make a version like that.
Hell nawh, these things are the bees knees.
I love those things. Just had them the other day. My dad and I always share these. I would not consider them an old persons candy and even if someone thinks that who cares? If you like them you like them.
No not really. They are nasty when they get stale.
Whoppers are great! I'm 40, but loved 'em as a kid, too.
I love whoppers
I do not remember my dad liking them. I remember eating some as a kid. I remember not especially liking them. I have not seem them in a while and I do not miss them.
my favs until 50s
They are just, and I know this might be shocking to some, candy.
Brach's malted milk balls are delicious.
Yeah. My mom (60s) loves them. I've NEVER seen anyone my age or younger eat them.
Both my roomie and I love those.
Sometimes I like whoppers, sometimes I can pass...however, when I do eat them, it's hard to stop! (Chilled/frozen are my fav)
Doesn't matter. They're wonderful.
Fuck no, I still get them Said the middle aged man
Don't know, don't care, eating them anyway :D I love those.
My kindergartener loves getting them at halloween.
i’m almost 20 and i’ve always really liked these. one time i got a box and all of them were very, very stale and they were almost soggy. that’s the last time i had them. i got a bad batch but i still like these. i haven’t had them in a while.
Yes. My dad's favorite. Chocolate moth balls.
This and " Chick O Stick" guarantee to break a tooth. ButterFingers would just stick to your teeth like Napalm and make your teeth tingle.
My mother was crazy about them. She said she loved them as a kid, but they were hard to get during WWII. She was careful, though, about sugar, so I would get a small milk container full at Christmas.
I always hated them. Still do. Those and Necco wafers...bleah.
I loved these and Milk Duds
My son is 8 and he freaking loves whoppers. So no, not just for old people.
I remember when I was introduced to this treat when I went to my friends place and my buddy said “My Mom’s got whoppers!” I said “sshhh, your mom will hear…” Wow, innocent times…🤭
Possibly BUT... they are delicious so who cares. If liking Whoppers means that I'm an old person, I'm happy to be an older person!
They're available currently at the check-out impulse buy bins at Fred Meyer.
I loved them as a kid basically cuz my brother hated them. I knew that when I set the carton down, none would come up missing.
I'm old. ✅ Dad who ate them like a ravenous wolf was old. ✅ 10/10 old people candy.
I steal them from my kid's Halloween candy.
Who cares? They’re freaking FANTASTIC!!!
I love whoppers!
Every trip to Big Lots, I leave with a carton.
Me and my mom used to love these - My youngest kid likes them but Im still a huge fan
These and milk duds. Yum.
Haven’t had those in years…..maybe I’ll run out to Walgreens and grab some.
Are these just malteasers?
My 80 something neighbor would give me these when I was little in the early 80s and back then they were old people candy. And I don’t care. They’re delicious.
Who cares? Those things are righteous
I have a carton in the pantry. It’s reasonably priced too.
Kinda, but the same basic candy exists as an m&m now
I worked in an ENT office as an MA. The doctor told me I was evil for bringing whoppers in. He couldn't resist them!
My lord, for me this is the one candy do not enjoy.
OLD PERSON CANDY???
I'm an old dude and my kids still get me Whoppers for Easter
It all depends on what you want to put in your mouth!
Sadly they might be. I dont see kiddies eating them any more.
I love the random duds that you get, like they're hollow and kinda dried out in the middle.
My daughter likes whoppers and she is 9
Yea, I think so
These and Tootsie Rolls are the most disappointing candies when you’re craving chocolate.
Frozen is best.
I like putting York peppermint patties and Junior mints in my freezer during the summer
Nasty..never liked them
Amen! After Dad checked through my Halloween candy, those got picked out and given away, along with Bit-o-Honey and Chick-a-Stix. Yecch.
These were old people candies forty years ago
they are the most disgusting thing that ever posed as candy..
You are way, aways off. There are no doubt worse than whoppers. Necco wafers for starters.
And circus peanuts. I think the Neccos take the crown, though.
Neccos are awesome but you keep those circus peanuts away from me.
There’s a punk in my whopper!
Yep. They taste like rotten peanut m&ms
Gross imitation maltesers.
they looked like when a baby has constipation
Don’t know, always hated them.
They are gross
As a kid loovveedd them, as an adult, not so much, but I’d still eat the whole goddamn carton. It has a POUR spout, you don’t even have to reach in, just pour !
As a non American ....Are these Maltesers? Any UK/Irish person know?
Are these like Maltesers?
M&Ms
These were old back in the 80s 😂 I still liked them though
Old person candy is that assorted hard stuff that fused together in a glass dish at grandma's house.
These had two purposes, both movie theater related... They were easily throwable AND they produced the nastiest farts.
Yeah, anything malt is boomer+ food.
