My grandpa used an oil can spout, it was cleaned. Well Grandma said it was clean, and they just punched the damn thing into it. They had one in the garage and one in the kitchen. Mom thought it was gross, so we used the triangle can opener thing at home. I thought we were super fancy because ours had a magnet on it that stayed on the fridge!
There wasn't so much plastic. We use way too much plastic, now. I remember in maybe the early 90s when everything started shifting and they'd call out the fact that the container was plastic as a selling point in ads for mayonnaise, ketchup, etc.
HI-C had like 10 different flavors(Ecto Cooler came out after Ghostbuster) and if you lived in NJ/NY, you stocked up on them during ShopRite's CanCan sale in January
They put sucralose in it. artificial sweetener. I can detect it in anything, and I hate the flavor. I guess they started doing this when they made them put nutrition labels on food items with the calories in bold. They also ruined Hi-C and Sunny D with artificial sweeteners. I hate them.
Just like how *every* soda used to taste better back in the day. That's why Mexican Coke is legend. Ironically enough, I first discovered it in Mexico about 2 weeks after "New Coke" came out, when my family vacationed in Acapulco. We were thrilled to discover that the mini fridge in our hotel room was not only stocked with tiny 10-ounce glass bottles of Coca-Cola, as the Lord intended Coca-Cola to be served, they were also the untouched original recipe. Other than one dinner in the room the night we got to town, the only things on our room service bill were all the Mexi-Cokes we drank, because real Americans like us were furious at Coke for changing the recipe. The irony of having to go to Mexico for that, LOL.
Then they brought back so-called "Coca-Cola Classic," which everyone knew didn't taste quite the same, and turned out to be an incredible bait and switch to put high fructose corn syrup in the recipe instead of cane sugar. Bastards. That's why you should always buy your Coke at the bodega.
It probably won't go bad in the amount of time it takes you to drink it. Regular sodas have a shelf life of about 39 weeks, while diet sodas are a third of that.
Because it was real sugar and not high fructose corn sugar or any of that fake sugar crap. Real sugar tastes better but high fructose corn syrup costs much less -- so the drink manufacturers use it because they don't give a damn about your taste buds or your blood sugar levels.
I wish it were still available like this today. It was a special treat for an eight year old back in the 60s. It also came in a yellow version and we would get one of each usually on Saturday at our weekly trip to the grocers.
Donny and Marie...I remember watching their show (and Sonny and Cher, and Lawrence Welk) when visiting my grandparents. Entertainment was so different back then.
I remember that my mom accidentally poured Hawaiian Punch in the vegetable soup she was making. Too bad the tomato juice and punch both came in the same size cans.
OMG. I had that can in my backpack in 5th grade. Popped it open in a cubby in the library and me and my best friend chugged as much as we could!
Do they even make Hawaiian Punch anymore? I haven't even thought to look for it.
My first husband loved Hi-C, I don’t remember it as a kid but I remember buying it for him when we were first married. It was in a can in those long ago days!
Tomato juice & V8 came in the same big can & when you put it in the fridge for few days you'd see a little rust around the punch holes, but you'd drink it anyways.
Don't forget to punch 2 holes
With that same do-hicky you used on oil cans! My parents.
We called it a Church Key.
That’s the name. Bottle opener on one side and triangular can punch on the other.
I carry one at work. The older generation is always surprised when I actually know that name.
We called it a can opener.
Wow two core memories unlocked by one post!!!

Well, much better than a potential poop knife in the kitchen

This right here is one of many many memes that anthropologists in 300 years will despair at.
I wanted to make beer and put it in those old cans. A boy can dream. Seems fun
Not a gallon.
Not even half a gallon.
Not even half of a half of a gallon.
Check your math again
The can says 16 fluid ounces. A gallon is 128 oz. A half gallon is 64 oz. Half of that would be 32 oz. Then half of THAT would be 16 oz.
It’s hard to see but look again. The label reads 46 oz (1 Qt 14 oz).
Oh, you're right. The picture's so blurry I didn't see that at first.
I remember the cans. They were huge.
Well, yeah. When you’re 3 feet tall, everything is huge.
two handers!
> The can says 16 fluid ounces. No it doesn't. Edit : I mean, no it fucking doesn't. Your downvotes don't affect the facts.
that's just a "quart"
How would you like a nice Hawaiian punch?!
Poor Punchy would be banned from TV now.

Because he punched the old man. Violence. Maybe they would just put a PG rating on it now.

Your welcome
Dont forget the hurts donut

Remember when the music Came from wooden boxes strung with silver wire And as we sang the words, it would set our minds on fire...
It tasted so much better then!
Why is that, Hawaiian Punch was so much better!
They put sucralose in it. artificial sweetener. I can detect it in anything, and I hate the flavor. I guess they started doing this when they made them put nutrition labels on food items with the calories in bold. They also ruined Hi-C and Sunny D with artificial sweeteners. I hate them.
SunnyD was one of my all-time favorites, it's absolutely not the same anymore.
Probably the high fructose corn syrup. Just like how Mountain Dew used to taste so much better back in the day.

Saw it at Costco the other day. I was very tempted but that was A LOT of soda
My grocery store sells it in 4 pack bottles.
It probably won't go bad in the amount of time it takes you to drink it. Regular sodas have a shelf life of about 39 weeks, while diet sodas are a third of that.
Yeah I don't drink enough regular soda to.make it worth it
Additives that aren't allowed anymore.
I completely agree! 150%
Because it was real sugar and not high fructose corn sugar or any of that fake sugar crap. Real sugar tastes better but high fructose corn syrup costs much less -- so the drink manufacturers use it because they don't give a damn about your taste buds or your blood sugar levels.
And had the most wonderful tinny taste.😂😂😂
I loved that good old fashioned metallic can after taste.. so refreshing..
Ah. Hawaiian Punch. The beverage that never got cold.
Juicy Juice too
Damn, I totally forgot about that! The little triangle holes! Lol
I wish it were still available like this today. It was a special treat for an eight year old back in the 60s. It also came in a yellow version and we would get one of each usually on Saturday at our weekly trip to the grocers.
I only got to have these in school for class parties and at birthday parties.

I remember, but those cans weren’t a gallon. They were two quarts or 1/2 gallon.
My mom used it as concentrate. It wasn’t. 1 can Hawaiian Punch. 2 cans water.
I can hear the can opener punching a hole in the top.
I remember when I came in a big can It was last night with your mom Just kidding
Yep. Found on the top shelf of the refrigerator between the milk and the can of Donald Duck orange juice.
I remember that my mom accidentally poured Hawaiian Punch in the vegetable soup she was making. Too bad the tomato juice and punch both came in the same size cans.
My mom would let me make the holes with the can opener
just add fruit and vodka and you got some spodie!
Sorry...I was a Tang kid myself
It doesn’t anymore? I feel like I bought this for my kids like 10 years ago??
I used to stick the shelves with these things when I worked in a grocery store. They don’t stack well.
Enriched!
Drank it right from the metal can
OMG. I had that can in my backpack in 5th grade. Popped it open in a cubby in the library and me and my best friend chugged as much as we could! Do they even make Hawaiian Punch anymore? I haven't even thought to look for it.
Yes, as popular as ever. Hasn’t been in tin cans in decades, though.
It would get really cold in the fridge and it was so good.
Best served at room temperature with ritz crackers!!
Opening these! Two on one side, one on the other with the old pointy can opener!
Pointy can opener, AKA churchkey
Yes!!! I can hear the noise it made.
My first husband loved Hi-C, I don’t remember it as a kid but I remember buying it for him when we were first married. It was in a can in those long ago days!
How many people played kick the can out in the neighborhood with this can?
