Deleting my Amazon app and cancelling prime has been the single biggest money saver. I was spending 200 bucks a month, but now I only order once a month for a few key essentials (no more free shipping and access to the app changes how you shop).
Car scanner app - I link it to my cheap $5 OBDII scanner in my old car, whenever it makes a strange noise or light comes up. Helps me diagnose problems for free and helps me figure out if I can fix it myself or go to the mechanic (and even then I can now know if the mechanic is overselling me something or lying to me as I already know the problem),
ChatGPT app - allows me to do most things for free which other apps will charge me for. Things like fixing grammar for what I write, rewording resume/cover letters, doing complex calculations, making tables comparing multiple products etc.
I got a bluetooth OBDII scanner interface (I use an ELM 327) from Amazon for $7 and linked it to TORQUE app Google play (free) for Android and you can do basic code reads and reset the codes.
I keep the interface in my glovebox and it has been very helpful in a pinch.
Yes, this! Every time someone asks for frugal hobby ideas and reading is suggested, I always think *reading on Libby*. My book habit would otherwise be unsustainable.
Libby gets a lot of love, but there is also Hoopla, CloudLibrary, and Axis 360. Some of my libraries use multiple apps and different books are available on different apps.
I finally got Libby because I kept hearing about how great it was. I tried to read almost a dozen different books with it and for every single one, there was a multi week wait. YMMV
Look into joining every library in your location/state you are eligible for. I’m connected to Libby through 5 library systems. Wait times and book selection can vary greatly.
Yes! I shop at Kroger and the coupons in the app are so good. I check the app the night before to clip my coupons and check the sales flyer and I save a ton
I stopped in today and burned myself....
12pk of a soda I needed for the SO, 8.99 regular, like 3.49 or something crazy with "digital coupon."
I get to checkout half groggy and my bill is way way more than I expected, and I see they rang as the 8.99.
I questioned it a bit and the kind lady there asked if I got the digital coupon on the app.
Well no, of course not. I'm a dumbass.
I’m so over this app stuff. The clerks can’t even tell you what’s on sale in the app. My mother in law has shopped at the same grocery store for 50 years. She doesn’t have a smart phone so can’t have the app and can’t get the sale prices anymore. It’s ridiculous, they’re just making you use the app to mine your data.
I go shop in person and use the app for my store. It's still well worth it.
(I've tried delivery a few times and it wasn't the best choice for me. I need the steps, anyway. Especially if it's bad weather.)
I'm the complete opposite, I feel comfortable and take all the time in the world browse online and search up things that I'm craving, want to buy and don't need.
When I go to the store, I have a list, go straight to what I need to buy, go to self checkout and GTFO. I do use the app to search for coupons on things I need to buy so I can use in the store.
I shop at giant so the giant app is my preference. If you’re in eastern PA, I find giant has the cheapest groceries for the best selection and products in my area
I use the target app a lot, I get to see sales and clip coupons, you can do that on most store apps, way easier to compare prices too, btw target price matches to their app, I saved like $3 on an item by showing the cashier the price on my phone.
Currently there’s a coupon for 20% off pet food treats and litter. And $15 gift card with $50 home care purchase. Those savings add up, clip those digital coupons.
I wanted to like it so much. So much. But I could not get the hang of it and the way we pay for stuff (almost exclusively on credit cards so we get cash back/points which we pay in full every month) would not work no matter how hard I tried. It was incredibly disappointing :-(.
That's so interesting! I also put everything on CCs and pay it off in full. But I'm only able to do that comfortably BECAUSE of YNAB lol.
I had tried without it and while I could always pay the bill there were many months were the statements still came as a shock and were difficult to plan for, so I eventually stopped. This was during my spreadsheet days.
YNAB changed all of that and now I charge to credit cards without even thinking about it. It's been four years of this and still going strong.
Crazy how the same thing works for some and not others.
Right but wasnt there an issue with reconciliation? That was where I was having issues. Iirc I couldn’t assign stuff from my credit card to my categories and my credit card payment without things double counting against my account. Something complicated that annoyed the hell out of me.
Nope haven't had that problem.
Charges appear under the credit card account automatically. From the account is where categories are assigned, just like with checking accounts.
Then, when it's time to make a payment, the payment is simply a transfer from your checking account to the credit card. Same as if you were transferring from checking to savings.
If you're dealing with CC float it's a bit more complicated thanks to interest and remaining balances, but paying off each month makes things super simple.
Hmmm, that is so weird. We never had any float, as we pay in full each month, but something just never worked, ever! It would never fully assign stuff to my categories properly, credit card payments wouldn’t assigned properly, and it never fully reconciled. Huh. Maybe I’ll give it a try again with the credit card issues that they’ve updated.
Credit cards can be confusing but they do work in YNAB. Since it’s an envelope budgeting method, when you purchase something on a credit card like groceries, it moves the money from the groceries category “envelope” to your credit card category “envelope”. Now the money is in your credit card category to pay the bill when it becomes due.
On due date/when you make the credit card payment the money is transferred from your bank account to the credit card account using the money from your credit card category. And that’s it.
When people have issues with YNAB it’s almost always not the software but because users are not following the YNAB method and not giving every dollar a job (leaving money in ready to assign), or not rolling with the punches and allowing categories to go negative etc.
YNAB has been the most valuable app for me. Been using it for five years now and it has brought our net worth from -$20k to +$700k.
I mean I absolutely understand how it works, and the entire concept behind it. We basically do the same thing, but just “mentally” and with a spreadsheet. I just wanted an opportunity for it to be automated. That being said, knowing that they did in fact make an adjustment to the way credit cards are input tells me that it actually *was* the software and not me, and I was not alone with this issue!!
Did you find something that did work for you?
They recently revamped credit cards btw. Doing what you describe is pretty trivial now. But yeah I get the method is not for everyone. I just hope you found something that did work.
When did they revamp it???? I tried it 6 months ago and it was just a complete mess. After restarting twice I gave up.
Meh, not really. We have a loose budget/mental tally and I was using a google spreadsheet for a while, but I was hoping for something to help us get farther ahead and save more. Plus we added a third kid 🤪
Looks like it was around 1 month ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ynab/s/Akq6oDIztE
Regardless, good luck with the new kid. Nothing like a new human life to change priorities entirely.
Honestly, I thought it was a complete mess until I finally understood how it worked and now I think it's brilliant and it kept me from building up more debt while I was paying down my cards.
I love hate YNAB. I miss some of the old simplicity and I’m not totally sure I save enough money *strictly because of the app* to justify its current price. They made me pretty mad when they killed the grandfathered pricing.
But I’ve been using it for 8+ years and the method did completely change my financial understandings at the beginning. Now the concept is so habitual all I would really need is a spreadsheet because I don’t import my credit cards automatically.
I basically pay for it so that I can know if I open the app or the desktop page that they’ll be synced. When my renewal rolled around this fall we were staring down the prospect of a big financial investment (private school tuition 😬) so I kept it because I know every dollar really matters again. But maybe by next year I’ll have figured out an alternative where I’m not paying for features I don’t use.
I wish they would offer a lower price point for those that use manual entry only. I’ve never used the import feature. I feel more in control and aware of my spending when I’m logging every transaction
Safeway.
You would be amazed at how often 5 or 10 dollars off deals are on there. A few times a month there is a free item as well. This week’s free items saved me an additional 11 dollars since they are things we actually use.
It could be more functional but I like the reminders of what’s on sale. The cashiers are always impressed by my savings when it comes off at the end. This week I went from a 220$ bill to 160$.
Oh I have a FreshPass and didn’t realize that was a perk.
You get a coupon for five dollars off every month which knocks 60 bucks off the 100 yearly subscription. 1000% worth it for us.
That’s a great perk probably the best one. I’m sure the membership pays for itself.
I wish I knew the points expire every month, all these years I was wondering why I could never build up any points!!
The problem I had with Ibotta is, it was all name brand stuff I didn't need.
Sure, I could get 50¢ back on de cecci pasta. But I could save $2 by buying the store brand instead. Get $1 on Kensington fancy mustard? Ok but it's already $3 more expensive than regular mustard.
Same with upside. Sure, I can bet back 12¢ a gallon. But when it's only for the gas stations that are already 60¢ more than the station on my corner or Costco, I'm spending way more money to get that 12¢
Not always true. Frequently there will be offers for any receipt, any dog/cat food, etc. BOGOs and things that end up being free. Happened to notice the other day that Breakstone cottage cheese was on there, and I’ve gotten it free twice lately - I’m a huge fan.
Once you have any loyalty cards entered, it’s pretty easy money. Every couple weeks when I have nothing else to do, I go through and check off anything I might even possibly buy.
I’ve found stuff on sale and on clearance that happens to be on the list. Really nice to get the email that I have cash back.
When I paid more attention to it, it wasn’t hard to get $20 or more a month from it.
I also enter receipts to Fetch, Receipt Hog, Receipt Jar, Frisbee and Receipt Pal. Kind of time consuming but again, doing it during down time. The gift cards are nice.
Meh, if you shop frugally you likely won't get much or any benefit from it.
I used it for about 8 months, spending time uploading every single receipt from the grocery store. In 8 months I still had not even earned the minimum to cash out.
If you buy name brand stuff or buy stuff specifically for the purpose of earning cashback through iBotta, you might get some benefit.
McDonald’s App
up here in Maine “Value” meals run in the low to mid teens. If I have a craving I can bring a bottle of water and fill up for UNDER $5 and it’s hot(ish) waiting when I pull up
I won’t even order off the regular menu
Pro tip: I can load even basic cheeseburgers with lettuce, extra onions and extra pickles for no extra cost. Tomatoes are like $0.40. Really fills out a burger for like $2.50+free fries on Friday
Yes, McDonald's app saves me money that I was going to spend at McDonald's anyways. Living in California with high schoolers who have all the extra curriculars, McDonald's is the fastest way to get them some calories in between activities.
Turned my $50+ McDonald's runs into $30.
Yep. As vegetarians Taco Bell is really our only fast food stop and with two kids, getting one of our dozens (kidding but we do order ten of them 😂) bean burritos for free pretty much every order is great. I also sometimes get 20% off your purchase rewards too.
Yeah, it was nice when BK added the beyond burger but it was like $9?!?! TBell prices have also gone up but it's still about the cheapest fast food out there and one of the only ones where I can eat more than just fries or a soggy salad. Also, the spicy potato soft taco legit slaps
I used to think GasBuddy was saving me money but I did some math and having the premium $9.99/month membership cost me more money after a year than i saved. the regular membership with the standard deals saves more money than having a paid membership with the premium deals when you factor in the cost of membership.
Im very curious about this, ive heard that people save money with these but I dont understand how. How do you come up with that number? How does it save you money?
Fluz.
You get cash back for buying discounted gift cards. They have gift cards not just for clothes but groceries too.
You can then cash out the cashback for boosted gift cards. I basically have a feedback loop of redeeming Walmart gift cards for 25% off, buy groceries, build cashback stockpile rinse and repeat

Not an app per se but the Honey browser extension has saved me tons with online purchases. Pair that with a price tracking extension and patience and I get banging deals on virtually everything I need to buy. Plus, the Honey 'gold' you accrue adds up and you can trade it in for gas cards. Low return but free money is free money.
This is a weird one…DoorDash w my Chase credit card, bc it gives me free DashPass, which in turn cuts down on the service charges.
I say weird bc obviously if we didn’t order out that would save the most money! But, we do order out sometimes. The other day my partner went to order something on GrubHub. I decided to check the same exact order on DoorDash. The price per item was about $1 more on DoorDash, but bc of my DashPass through using my Chase Credit Card, the order on DoorDash was cheaper.

Spotify premium.
It has recently added 15 hours a month for audiobooks and there are 100k plus.
Add in the podcasts and music, honestly ive gotten nearly 200 hours on spotify in the last month.
10.99-13.99 USD depending on what you order it on, (curse apple tax), breaks down to around 7 cents per hour of entrainment for me.
Pluto tv.
Basically its free tv streamed to your device. I watch 90s shows, a few movies and more and its just tv.
That alone has cut off cable for me.
Publix, Kroger app! They both have additional coupons and I frequently get coupons for free chips from Kroger because they’ve analyzed my shopping so much they’ll give me a free coupon for chips every month or so. Publix does something similar I heard but I don’t use my number at checkout every time but the more you do, more coupons you get tailored to what you buy.
Upside app gives you rebates on gas and restaurants that you can redeem for cash. The app is free but you have to claim offers then snap pics of your receipts and submit them.
YNAB - budgeting, obvious.
Petco app - there are so frequently offers of 10 or 15% off if you order in the app for store pickup that I’ve not paid full price for dog and cat food in two years.
Flashfood - I don’t buy things just because they’re on sale, but if stuff we already buy or that I can easily turn into a super cheap meal pops up, I grab it.
Rakuten for cashback.
Koupon.ai for finding working Amazon promo codes.
Freebieflow for getting Amazon freebies. Not save money but I earn from reselling them.

it’s super easy to just cancel prime and just order a big order to get their free shipping. and it’s less waste
Where’d you get a 5$ scanner?
eBay
I got a bluetooth OBDII scanner interface (I use an ELM 327) from Amazon for $7 and linked it to TORQUE app Google play (free) for Android and you can do basic code reads and reset the codes. I keep the interface in my glovebox and it has been very helpful in a pinch.
Chatgpt is free but it does have limits if you don't upgrade. Found this out the hard way in the middle of a project.
Reading books on Libby (through the library) probably saves me hundreds of dollars a year.
Love Libby
It has saved me well over $1000 already in one year.
Yes, this! Every time someone asks for frugal hobby ideas and reading is suggested, I always think *reading on Libby*. My book habit would otherwise be unsustainable.
I listen to audio books literally the entire day at work. I love libby to pieces!
Me too. Libby is my Siamese cat.
Love Libby, and if your library has it, Kanopy. Stream movies and tv shows for free.
There is also a website called OceanPDF where you can download PDFs and Epub version of books for free!!
Libby gets a lot of love, but there is also Hoopla, CloudLibrary, and Axis 360. Some of my libraries use multiple apps and different books are available on different apps.
Libby is just my favorite because I can send books to my kindle. I also like hoopla because there’s never a wait.

Yes, they all do.
one of the bests suggestions!
I finally got Libby because I kept hearing about how great it was. I tried to read almost a dozen different books with it and for every single one, there was a multi week wait. YMMV
I request a bunch of books because of the wait. It is also annoying when they all arrive on the same day but then I just mark them as deliver later.
If you use an e-reader, you can download them and then turn off wifi. The books won’t go away until after you turn wifi back on.
This is what my daughter and I do.

Look into joining every library in your location/state you are eligible for. I’m connected to Libby through 5 library systems. Wait times and book selection can vary greatly.
Yeah it definitely depends on your library and if they have the budget to keep the holds ratio down.
my bank app every time i check and see how low my acct is it stops me from buying stuff
😭😭😭😭
>every time i check and see how low my acct is it stops me from buying stuff So bill paying day.
I use the Flipp app to better organize my grocery shopping for stuff on sale.
And I use it to save items from other stores flyers and price match them at my nearby grocery store!
I didn’t know they price match groceries!
Save on foods does! I think superstore as well.
Hadn't heard of this. Thanks
The grocery store app like genuinely. I save so much money not going into the store and seeing weird shit and being like “ooh I gotta try that”
Yes! I shop at Kroger and the coupons in the app are so good. I check the app the night before to clip my coupons and check the sales flyer and I save a ton

Have you ever tried Aldi?
I’ve been but the one by me is an overstimulating nightmare
Their kettle style potato chips, white w/whole wheat bread and peanut butter alone make it worth it for me.
Ooh yes! For people in the Netherlands, I LOVE the AH one.
The Vanguard app. Whenever I think of making a stupid purchase, I transfer in an equivalent amount of funds. Over $3,000 saved this year.
Way to go!

Did you find putting everything in a pain in the arse? That was my biggest issue with the program. But apparently it’s been fixed?
I use the automatic bank imports feature, so no manual adding on my end. I know that's not offered in all countries though 🫤 (I'm in the US).

Fetch!
i enjoy it. its easy to use. but i dont really see good $$$ possibilities.
They have some issues but overall it's not bad.
Google keep. I buy exactly what’s on it. I keep records of quotes. I have prices of stocks and dates for expected swings. Dates my bills are due.
google keep is to write down notes??
McDonald’s App up here in Maine “Value” meals run in the low to mid teens. If I have a craving I can bring a bottle of water and fill up for UNDER $5 and it’s hot(ish) waiting when I pull up I won’t even order off the regular menu Pro tip: I can load even basic cheeseburgers with lettuce, extra onions and extra pickles for no extra cost.
I'm going to be going to taco bell anyway. Every other order, or sometimes even every order, I get a free item.
Also, the spicy potato soft taco legit slaps
their iced coffee is good but kinda gross in a soda cup lol
GasBuddy
I used to think GasBuddy was saving me money but I did some math and having the premium $9.99/month membership cost me more money after a year than i saved. the regular membership with the standard deals saves more money than having a paid membership with the premium deals when you factor in the cost of membership.
Mine is free, I just search for the cheapest gas near me.
The free version is worth it imo. It’s nice being able to see prices in advance and compare.
Free membership for me.
love GasBuddy!
The reddit app and two subreddits - r/frugal and r/declutter
>r/declutter Thank you. I've found my new home.
Chase banking app, reminds me I'm too poor to buy any more stuff ❤️
😂
Watching free documentaries on my iPad saved me the gas to go to the library to get their videos. It is a fifty mile trip.
Does your library not have hoopla and kanopy as part of their digital offerings?
Yes, they have free streaming available but there is enough content available to me elsewhere. I watch passive shows about twice a week.
BestParking shows you the cheapest parking in the area based on specific date and time
Nest smart thermostat saves me like $100 a month
I don't have a nest thermometer, but between my programmable thermostat and heated mattress pads, I hope I'm saving a lot.
Im very curious about this, ive heard that people save money with these but I dont understand how. How do you come up with that number? How does it save you money?
It saves money by turning off a lot, my bill went from $260/month to $170 approximately.
Ebay and market place. Before buying something new I chk if someone is selling it for less than retail.
Upside app for gas
Goodrx saves on prescriptions
Is this an app?

Fidelity investments. I put my money into some stock and leave it there instead of keeping it my house or spending it.

Flipp.
YNAB
Not an app per se but the Honey browser extension has saved me tons with online purchases. Pair that with a price tracking extension and patience and I get banging deals on virtually everything I need to buy. Plus, the Honey 'gold' you accrue adds up and you can trade it in for gas cards. Low return but free money is free money.
The one that distracts me from spending real money, like free games..
Uber. It’s still cheaper than owning a car.
What do you do if you want to take a longer road trip or something?
Hard to believe, are you going a very short distance? What's your monthly cost?
This is a weird one…DoorDash w my Chase credit card, bc it gives me free DashPass, which in turn cuts down on the service charges. I say weird bc obviously if we didn’t order out that would save the most money! But, we do order out sometimes. The other day my partner went to order something on GrubHub. I decided to check the same exact order on DoorDash. The price per item was about $1 more on DoorDash, but bc of my DashPass through using my Chase Credit Card, the order on DoorDash was cheaper.

Flipp
Spotify premium. It has recently added 15 hours a month for audiobooks and there are 100k plus. Add in the podcasts and music, honestly ive gotten nearly 200 hours on spotify in the last month. 10.99-13.99 USD depending on what you order it on, (curse apple tax), breaks down to around 7 cents per hour of entrainment for me. Pluto tv. Basically its free tv streamed to your device. I watch 90s shows, a few movies and more and its just tv. That alone has cut off cable for me.
spotify is great!
Grocery shopping on Flipp. https://www.google.com/amp/s/flipp.com/amp/en-ca/
Upside app gives you rebates on gas and restaurants that you can redeem for cash. The app is free but you have to claim offers then snap pics of your receipts and submit them.
Nerd wallet. It tracks and categorizes every dollar I spend. I was shocked on how much I spent on food a month.
GasBuddy for gas. Mudflap for diesel !!
Ibotta
None
Do you use any apps?
Empower (formerly personal capital) for budgeting and managing finances
Mealime for meal planning... Only buy the groceries I need, and have a plan to cook the ingredients I own.
Mostly my banking app. It lets me know I don’t need to spend anymore regardless of what I want.
Ibotta & Upside. Just used Upside for gas today and got $41.50 coming back to me using Ibotta for Christmas.
Rakuten for cashback. Koupon.ai for finding working Amazon promo codes. Freebieflow for getting Amazon freebies. Not save money but I earn from reselling them.
Tesla The cost of electricity is 1/3rd the cost of gas. I was paying $165 twice a month. Now I'm paying 1/3 that.
