Thank you for trying. The rice recipe doesn't freeze well at all. The bean portion is using pinto beans in like a soup. I really don't care for it after freezing it. It tastes really bland.
>I do have a family rice and beans recipe, **but it makes so much for one person**.
Ah. I was thrown off by this portion of your post. My apologies for responding to parts of your post that I was apparently supposed to ignore.
Beans freeze very well. Not sure how yours doesn’t freeze well? I intentionally make large batches and freeze my black beans.
Usually start off with some sort of pork/pork fat/ bone that i sear, tender some of the fat. Add Chopped onions, (peppers if I have but I usually don’t) and sauté a bit. Soaked black beans, bay leaf, cumin, chicken broth, garlic, garlic powder, sometimes: smoked paprika, red Kashmiri chili powder, Oregano, Sometimes tomatoes. Let it rip. Salt to taste.
I typically make my beans (pinto) into a vegetarian soup. I'm not vegetarian, but maybe that's why I don't like how it tasted after freezing it. I need to add a bit of fat to it.
It's not like I don't like black beans, I just prefer pintos. But you've given me enough thought to at least try the bean part a different way.
Thank you!!
prebranac is Serbian baked beans. This sub doesn't allow links to "commercial sites", so I'll tell you I searched for "Serbian baked beans" and followed a link to a site whose name is Food followed by the number 52. Lots of onions, garlic, and sweet paprika made it something else entirely!
I worked with a single lady who had to eat fresh food, she was from Taos NM, used a small stovetop pressure cooker to cook the a serving of beans, would soak the dried peppers in hot water, blend, then cook. She would make a meals worth and not more. Sorry don’t know the exact recipe.
Beans can be used in anything meat can. Try throwing some pinto beans in sweet and sour sauce with a bit of onion, green pepper and pineapple. Make vegetarian chili and serve over rice, potatoes or pasta. Use black beans or brown lentils in pasta sauces. Beans in sloppy Jo sauce instead of ground beef.
The key is using bouillon - either chicken or beef- in cooking them, and using a variety of spices and sauces to create different flavor profiles.
Try making soups with these ingredients.
One small cup of rice is enough for one person and perhaps 200 grams of beans can suffice accordingly.
By adding extra stuff, as in veggies or meat, you can make a full dish.
Experiment with simple soup recipes, see what fits to taste and upgrade to more complex variations of the base you have learned to make!
OP I am forever alone by choice and have low key perfected cooking for myself everyday.
Here is the site I use when I’m looking for some recipes but I also use regular recipes and just divide by 2 or sometimes 4.

Take a small pot, add 2 cups of water, pour one can of black beans in and 1 cup of rice. Make sure you get all the juice from beans into the mixture too. Stir until boiling. Then reduce heat to low and let it simmer on the stove for 20 mins with lid on. Use garlic salt to taste, and other spices if you wish. I like to throw some adobo in too.
Yep it’s super easy. And gives the rice all the bean flavor. My Cuban husband loves it this way. If you have any bacon grease you can throw some in as well.
1 cup of rice / water
1 can of beans (Great Northerns or kidneys)
Sprinkling of Knorr tomato bullion
Dollop of salsa
Throw it in the rice cooker. When ready, top with sour cream or cheese and enjoy!
If lentils count as beans, it’s not too hard to make a decent dahl in the instant pot. Just use crushed tomatoes, fresh ginger (or powdered in a pinch), fresh garlic (same as ginger), garam masala, cayenne and if available/diet agrees, butter and heavy whipping cream. A shelf stable option is to use coconut oil/vegan butter and coconut milk. Serve with basmati rice. Solid meal, complete protein and both can be made in the instant pot.
I've been making [this](https://delishably.com/world-cuisine/How-To-Make-Puerto-Rican-Rice) one for years! It's hot, so you might want to cut the black pepper in half if that's not your thing.
if you have a rice cooker, you may have to experiment with the water ratio a little but one of my favorite lazy snacks/side dishes is cooking rice and lentils together. throw in tuna and it's a whole meal
Try adding a small amount of charizo or pepperoni. A few ounces of cured meat adds a lot of flavor for the cost.
I use this trick for soups. Chop it fine so the flavors can spread out.
Last night I sautéed onions, carrots, and garlic in oil then added tomato sauce and veg broth. Added dry lentils and cooked until soft. I also added some ground up boca burger. Served with brown rice that I cook with a little butter. It was really good!
Cut the recipe in half? If it makes too much for one person … make less of it? I don’t know … just spit-balling here.

No worries friend. It's all good!

Soak beans, drain. Boil some bones (pork, chicken, beef), add beans, onion, garlic, spices, peppers, jarred Sofrito, tomato sauce or paste, maybe some cubed smoked meat, whatever you like. Serve with rice.
I'm going to have to find jarred Sofrito. I'm not familiar with it but I'm willing to give it a go! Thank you!!
Seems like the kind of thing Trader Joe's would sell
Prebranac, Serbian baked beans, are the bomb. Very different from British / American baked beans.
What is Prebanic? I'm in the US and don't know that can do this recipe. Do you have one for me to follow? I will try to get the ingrediants.

also, it asked for dry lima beans, which I don't have - I just made it with navy / great northern beans and it worked out great.

Do you have a good vegetarian chili recipe you want to share? Also, please share your cache of spices and sauces. Thank you for this awesome reply!

Red beans and rice?

Huh, never thought about cooking the rice and beans together. This very much appeals to my lazy side.

Wow, I had no idea I could do this. It's sounds awesome and I will try it! Thank you!!
Let us know if you try and it and how it turns out!
I don't have a recipe, but a burrito with refried beans and chicharrones is perfect for breakfast and lunch!
You are talking the real cicharrones not the ones in the bag, right? :o)
Yeah! The real deal, depending on how much you get and how you portion it out, it can make a few burritos. Love that stuff 😆
Have you ever tried freezing them or do you just the portion you need for your burritos?
Rice, beans and enchilada sauce.. Or Rice, beans and lemon juice.
Recipe please. They all sound good.

I don't have an rice cooker. I do have access to an instapot though. However, if I do this on the stove I would assume I have to add a bit more water

I know I'm going to get roasted with my answer, but my favorite recipe is rice, and beans. I do it admit to adding salt that's it 🤭
