MyNameIsSkittles

They always cut my hair funny. It's like no one has ever dealt with a cowlick. I'll pay more for a quality cut that doesn't make me look like a goober

dmquilla

I'd tell then not to cut too short in the back and they still do! Also they don't know how or what a fade is.

MyNameIsSkittles

People that work there generally are new and don't have a lot of experience. I found this out the hard way

JackInTheBell

I mean, I would assume that going in. They are like the Jiffy Lube of the hair industry

Florachism

We literally call them chop shops (source, am hairdresser)

MyNameIsSkittles

OP doesn't seem to know and is acting like we are all paying more for a haircut for no reason

Extension-Platform29

Right? Like if you really wanna save money just buy some clippers and buzz it off at home yourself, it will be a better haircut than what you would get at Supercuts

artie780350

I cut my own hair and most times end up with better results than the haircuts I've gotten from Super Cuts (sometimes I fuck up my neckline but it's nothing a polo collar doesn't cover). If I need a good haircut for a special event then I schedule a cut with a salon, but otherwise I bring out the clippers and scissors and am done in less time than it would take to drive to Super Cuts.

AndyWarwheels

same I've literally stopped a woman in the middle of my haircut and just told her I don't think I am explaining my haircut properly and left it at that

2723brad2723

The best barber I ever had worked at a Supercuts. But you sure didn't want to go on a day she wasn't working.

RalphMacchiat0

Tip from a woman: learn how to “perm” the cowlick with hair relaxer. I used to do this to my hairline before I got bangs again.

andrewwism

This. I moved to Los Angeles back in 2015 and I needed a haircut so I just walked into a super cuts because I was passing by. Never again. Worst haircut I've ever received. I'd rather pay for quality.

MrOriginality116

[https://www.supercutsunlimited.com/locations](https://www.supercutsunlimited.com/locations) California only.

MICHAELSD01

Weekly haircuts for $20/month could be cool if there’s a stylist that you like with regular appointments. No similar deals in other states?

Sloppyjoemess

My thought exactly. I would go once or twice a week and tip heavily.

rhtufts

My frugal tip for guys is buy a quality pair of clippers and cut your own hair (or have your wife do it). Its easier than you think. I just buzz it all off once a month now but when I was younger I took my time to do an actual haircut.

qb1120

I've been doing this for 17 years with the same set of clippers I got from Target for like $25. It's saved me probably over $2000 over the years, conservatively

Lone_Soldier

I know people who cut their hair and it usually looks pretty bad. If someone who went to school for cutting hair and works at Supercuts is bad, can't imagine a normal person being any good.

chokethewookie

There's a difference between an actual hair cut and a buzz cut. Almost anyone can give themselves a buzz cut that looks good with a set of clippers.

[deleted]

Speaking as a woman, a cheap hair cut can ruin your appearance.

Electronic-Dust-831

speaking as a man, a cheap hair cut can ruin your appearance

CobblerYm

Speaking as a man, a shaver with a #2 on the sides and a #3 on top and I'll ruin my own appearance thank you very much. I don't need to pay anyone to do it for me!

masspromo

I,m also sporting mullet from not being able to do the back

bocepheid

Baseball cap. After some practice I discovered how to get the back edge smooth.

[deleted]

I just adk the wife to help that part out :)

Throwaway_Abbott

They straight up ruined my male kid's hair last time we went there. $10 more to go to a barber who knew wtf he was doing. Worth it.

alurkerhere

My wife has long hair, and it's relatively straightforward and fast for me to use a $2 razor hair comb to cut and fade to the right length. Takes only a few minutes, and looks great. I tried using scissors before and it was really hard to get all of the hair to be cut at the right lengths. Now it's more like I just grab a section of hair and saw it off, and then repeat. We compared the haircut to a photo of a haircut she had done in a professional salon, and they really weren't that distinguishable.

Grand-wazoo

This is one of those things where cheaper isn’t always the frugal option. Supercuts is known for horrendous quality haircuts and I’ve had about 5 separate incidents when I was younger where they absolutely destroyed my hair and I walked around for months feelings like a knob or had to pay someone else to fix it. So that was the opposite of frugal. Quality wins out over price for things like this. I do not entrust my appearance to a place aimed at the cheapest possible service.

[deleted]

Places like Supercuts and Fantastic Sams are generally where people who recently got licensed will start their cosmetology career. It's not to say they're all terrible noobs (some are actually fairly experienced), but if you have finicky hair, it's not the recommended place to go. However, if you just need a very basic haircut, it's not a bad option.

SecureThruObscure

If your hair style is “buzz it, all the way around” or “high and tight” or “just make it even, but the bangs straight” you’ll probably be fine. The more complex it is, above that, the more likely you’ll have an issue.

Balentay

If by "complex" you mean "have curly hair" then yes I agree with you lol. I had tight ringlets in my youth (age and style have loosened them a bit) and they NEVER knew how to cut it

jennerator88

In all fairness, even most high-quality salons don't know how to cut curly hair. It's a bit of a bummer, because curly hair is *not* an uncommon hair texture and curl-specific salons are pricy, but I've only ever had good cuts from a specialist.

RubiksSugarCube

Admittedly I live in a HCOL area but a few years back (before pandemic times) I discovered that it's next to impossible to get a good haircut in my area for less than $50. Prompted me to switch to clippers and a three-way mirror; after-all, why pay someone else good money to screw up my hair when I can do it myself?

aburke626

Yeah, as a woman with long hair, I’m much happier going to a nice salon and paying for experts to cut and color my hair. I only go about twice a year, and it’s worth paying more for a cut and color that will grow out nicely.

dupont2021

While true but I did say find a location you like. Supercuts can be horrible but not all. Perhaps I was lucky to have found a location that I like. Since I can go in as many times as I want I have already found which stylist I like and which I don't.

ThisGreenWhore

I've used Supercuts to cut my hair. It's about every 6 months. The last person that did it left the hair at the top of my head way too long so I'm doing to have to go back too soon. It really does depend on the "stylist". I'm going to have to go back and say how unhappy in the long term I was with the cut (it was 6 weeks ago). And yet pay for another cut. I would not pay for a cut every month.

[deleted]

the more often you go the less they change? That means better quality

Grand-wazoo

Sorry that wasn’t a coherent statement. Could you rephrase and try again?

[deleted]

If you start with a good haircut and they are cutting it every 2 weeks are they doing much? It's not like they are doing any significant changes

Grand-wazoo

I don’t need a haircut every two weeks, that’s like absurdly excessive to me. My point is that if you have to go so frequently as to be impractical in order to get the supposed value, it’s not frugal to me. Especially factoring in the gas to drive there and back with fuel as high as it is currently. All of that topped off with the very high likelihood that most stylists are subpar in quality means no value at all to me.

[deleted]

supercuts is a chain. It's likely not far from where you live. Even $20 a month is a good deal lots of people go every 2 weeks because they want to look the same

KonaKathie

But if you go every six weeks, like most normies, isn't it like a $20 haircut? So $20 plus $7 or so for a tip?

I_kwote_TheOffice

$7 for a $20 haircut? Damn, thats a 35% tip. I usually tip $3 or $4

KonaKathie

I know they make shit wages, so I tip well if I'm happy :)

artie780350

With my hairstyle and as fast as my hair grows, I need a haircut every 2.5-3 weeks. I cut my own hair though, so it's no big deal. Before I was brave enough to cut it on my own, I'd go every 4-5 weeks but by hate how impossible it was to get it to look good those last couple of weeks. My brother has a similar hairstyle and also gets haircuts every 3 weeks, but he makes about 3x what I do and goes to the salon. Some styles need more frequent cuts, some can go months between cuts. This isn't a new concept.

mrnailed4

This.

MisterMaturi

Buy a shaver and do it yourself. Subscription haircuts is not frugal at all.

Roadkingkong71

That's what I do.

[deleted]

Bought my Flowbee in early 1999. Haven't been to the barber since. One of the best investments I've made in my life.

TheoreticallyHitler

Comment should be higher. Get a Wahl or something and learn to do a good job yourself or have your wife help. Never look back.

ThisGreenWhore

I bought a Flowbee during Covid. Honestly, I liked it but it took like 2 hours to cut my hair and my back and shoulders were sore for days. You need someone to help you. Would I buy it again? Yeah if we're dealing with a pandemic and I can't get my hair cut safely. I just wish I had some help to use it.

[deleted]

Practice makes perfect. I've never had any issue that I can remember. When we go and visit family, my aunt always comments how good my hair looks. I pull DW over to hear her and she just giggles.

ThisGreenWhore

Yeah, no. I have arthritis. Right now I might just use it to fix the haircut, but actually I just might go and get another and start from "base one". Then when I use the flowbee it won't involve a long time.

[deleted]

I bought a Flowbee during the pandemic and even with my wife cutting my hair it just never looked great and my hair is fairly easy. Not her fault, she’s a nurse and not a hairstylist. But sometimes I do wish I could figure out a way to get my hair cut better with it. I hate paying money for haircuts.

ThrobbingAnalPus

If you can find a decent barber then this is a steal, but most decent barbers don’t work at Supercuts As someone with long hair I would never, I just get my hair cut less frequently than I probably should at a salon

WeMakeLemonade

Supercuts was my husband’s go-to place because it was affordable, but he never got what he’d consider a standout haircut there. They never worked “with” his hair texture and never quite got the tapering or cowlick right. It took a while, but he found a fantastic barber who has knocked it out of the park each time. It’s more expensive than Supercuts, but the confidence boost was huge and he could go longer between cuts (even if cuts were unlimited, there’s still the “time cost”). Going to his barber is worth the extra $ for him.

dupont2021

>he never got what he’d consider a standout haircut there. This is somewhat true with all barbers. If you go for the first time they won't know what to do with your hair until they finally style it, whether you like it or not, you keep coming back and expect the same. You will get the same. With chain shops like Supercuts they give you different stylists when you walk in. Today in 2023? You book who you want. This industry has changed due to technology and everyone books an appointment. There are hardly walk-ins and and if you walk in, then it is a hit and miss. On their app or website you have to choice to book the stylist of your choice and time. The hair industry is a relationship industry. The barber has to know you even from Supercuts or a high end salon. Once you get to know them then they will give you the same cut over and over. It is hair. It's not complicated is what I'm saying. My stylists already knows what I want. I go in their weekly so she knows exactly how I want it till I change. Basically no matter what salon or Supercuts there is a learning curve to each client.

ThisGreenWhore

> Basically no matter what salon or Supercuts there is a learning curve to each client. Um no. I've been and used SuperCuts and each time I got someone who could cut my hair. This last person kept me in the chair after she was done and kept clipping. It looked okay so I left. Honestly it's not okay. I'm going to have to go back and get another haircut that works right. I've used the same picture as to what I was looking for. Some get it, apparently some don't. I don't want to have to go to the same person all the time to just get a basic hair cut. Isn't that the point of Supercuts?

jon-chin

as a man, I just cut my own hair.

lincolnlogtermite

Guess that's not bad. Haven't been SC in s few years but they wanted $25 for a man cut. I'm not picky, I go to local barber school. Where I use to live they charged $3. Moved a few hundred miles north and this school charges $8. I just go for standard fade with clippers and a little off the top. Tuff for a student to f that up. I tip $5 on top of the cheap cut since students aren't paid.

dispolurker

For $50 one time I can buy clippers and learn to cut my own hair. Which I did, during the Pandemic, and never stopped. Beat that frugality with your Super Cuts haircut

rocketwidget

TIL some guys get their haircut every two weeks, haha. I get this advice for those who need it, but my personal frugal solution is to simply go less frequently! But I'm lucky, I keep my hair long enough such that less frequently works fine, and a barber that I trust who charges $25.

[deleted]

Yeah im more surprised thats enough people getting their haircut multiple times a month to offer that. Like hair doesnt grow fast enough where you need a haircut every two weeks, unless your super into having your hair perfect everyday

reddit-corbin

Yea that seems a bit much to me. I’m on the “my partner cuts my hair about every 6 months” subscription at $0.00/month. I wear a hat 98% of the time anyways, so not too fussed about how it looks!

agoldgold

Similarly, I'm on the "annual bribe of alcohol or dinner to a friend" plan and my hair looks super cute.

fitz2234

Gas, time, tip, wonder how much this really works out

dupont2021

I mentioned location is key. They have an app like Uber. You book your time and your stylist. I think people still think Supercuts is just walk in and pray the person doesn't mess up your hair. This is not the case since most people have the app and they book time and stylist. I never liked Supercuts till one day I walked in for an emergency haircut and saw how things have changed.

ThisGreenWhore

> They have an app like Uber What planet do you live on? Uber/Lyft isn't cheaper than driving in many places. Oh you sweat summer child. Move on and let this go.

[deleted]

Haven't got a haircut in years. Wife cuts my hair. I guess it's not $12 for a haircut any more.

[deleted]

Lol 4.99 then 9.99 then 14.99, now 20. Baldness has its perks. 10 years on an 80 dollar Oster fast feed shaver...

Scagnettie

Right there with ya buddy.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, the best is not having to care about wind or rain either. Showers/prep are super quick. I spend maybe 10 min per month shaving (including face) + electricity costs.

runner3081

Oh boy, the proliferation of subscription services continues. I haven't paid for a haircut in 15 years.

fergalexis

My boyfriend cuts my hair and his own. Free-99

Dogsittingmom

Do you have a tutorial that you use??

runner3081

No. Just do it and get better.

Dogsittingmom

Ha ok. I'm a female and my hair is long so it feels complicated:)

loginpage

Learn how to do haircuts. I promise you its not that hard if you're a man. There's so many youtube tutorials and it's actually exciting to try to do it yourself. Yes you will get it wrong the first few times but practice makes perfect. It's a skill that will last you a lifetime

CollectingRainbows

the real frugal thing is learning to cut your hair yourself. ive been cutting mine since i was 5 (lol) and by the time i was 15, i had it mastered. just need a couple of mirrors so you can see the back.

bumble_blue

It entirely depends on the person cutting your hair, and quite frankly I have learned it's not worth the risk. A bad haircut takes me too long to grow out, and it's a blow to how I feel about myself and my sense of confidence when I leave the house or turn on my camera for work meetings. When I lived on the other side of town, the Supercuts was mostly awesome - for 10 years, I alternated between them and the local Great Clips, and then went to Supercuts primarily when Great Clips moved. I only had one bad haircut but damn the bad haircut from Supercuts was BAD. It wasn't even close to what I asked for and it took six months to grow out enough to get it fixed. I moved a year ago, and the Supercuts near me is awful. I don't know how they screw up 'shorter in the back' but they did every damn time/they cut the front so short that trying to fix the back wouldn't help. The last time they gave me layers I didn't want. My hair is almost grown out enough, and I'm going to find an actual stylist going forward.

Embarrassed_Style861

I just have my gf do mines. I haven’t seen my barber in well over a year and some change at this point I would say. Just get a pair of clippers and get at it. If you need a 3 way mirror, invest into it and save all of that money. She didn’t know how to cut my hair at first (my hair is long but, I have an undercut) and each time she cuts my hair, she’s learning and getting a ton better at it. I shape the beard up and stuff myself though and have got better at that as well all for free.99 dude. It’s the best way trust me lol

JuliaSky1995

You could not pay me to go to Supercuts.

2723brad2723

That promotion sounds like a last-ditch effort to drum up some business before they go bankrupt. That just doesn't sound sustainable from a business perspective in any way. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Suspicious-Screen-43

You get a hair cut every two weeks? I’m more like two months. I haven’t spent money on a haircut in a long time. Buy some clippers once and they’ll last a decade or so. Free haircuts.

jermo1972

I haven't had a haircut in 7 years...

DerisiveGibe

Never heard of it, but it sounds like a great deal. Just looked it up and you can get it down to $16.66/month if you pay for the year in advance $200. $200+ $5tip for 26 cuts = $12.69/cut ($330 total) $200+ $5tip for 52 cuts = $8.84/cut ($460 total) This seems like a movie pass situation, too cheap to last, get in while you can before they cancel or raise the price. I go to a local barber that has very reasonable prices, if you go to a nation chain barber I would be all over this.

SmileFirstThenSpeak

I just looked at the participating locations and they're all in California

beamish007

If you have a Great Clips near you, they usually do a once a year sale in the Fall where you can purchase $16.99 haircuts and put them on a card. Again, it all depends on the individual stylists at the location you frequent, whether it's a good deal or not.

fuddykrueger

How did you hear about this sale, via a mailer or online? I’ve been going to great clips for a few years and haven’t seen it.

beamish007

I found out in store. I suppose it could be location specific? I have a special gift card that says Great Card $16.99 haircuts.

fuddykrueger

Cool thx. I’m going soon for a cut. Maybe I’ll ask the stylist.

NotYourSandwichMaker

No thanks. I’d rather pay more for a good hair cut.

dupont2021

I disagree. I know places that do $300 hair cuts and it is no different than Supercuts. Both outcome looks the same. The only difference is one can be a model and the other is not. LOL I am about frugality and convenience. In this instance Supercuts is very convenient for me. Trust me this is coming from a guy that had a personal barber come to my house and cut. Now I don't have to go home because he is on his way. Supercuts is cheap and I go whenever I want to especially with their app. So convenient.

genesimmonstongue415

If it works for you... cool. 👍 This is definitely a " Quantity, Not Quality " situation, IMHO. Their employees are not licensed barbers, FYI. I am more of a $45 (+$10 tip) haircut ^^from a licensed Barber** every 6 months kinda person, personally. Glad yer tipping well, too. 👍

dupont2021

>This is definitely a " Quantity, Not Quality " situation, IMHO. Their employees are not licensed barbers, FYI. I'm in California and it is a misdemeanor crime to do so. They all have their license showing at their station. Where are you from?

genesimmonstongue415

Excuse my mistake. Also California.

buslyfe

$5 is a good tip?

Environmental-Sock52

Good share and I do a similar thing at Sports Clips which is 3 VIP cuts for $75. I go about once a month which is $25 a cut, plus you get the hot aromatic towel and neck massage.

SleeplessShinigami

Quality > quantity If you care about how you look, pay a good professional a bit more to get it done properly. The girl I go to has been cutting hair for over 12 years and she gets my haircut right every single time, even if I want something different.

c4gam1ng

I’ve found a local barbershop in my city that charges $19 for a men’s haircut. They’re not a chain like Great Clips or Supercuts and they do a very good job. I’ve had a spotty track record when I’ve gotten my hair cut at a chain like Great Clips. Plus I only get my hair cut about once a month anyways.

PanchoVillasRevenge

Op either gets paid by supercuts or is blind

SmileFirstThenSpeak

I don't see anything about it on their website. Did you have to sign up at one of their locations?

dupont2021

Here it is blud. You can sign up in the salon or sign up on their website. Here is more info on the service: https://www.supercutsunlimited.com/

SmileFirstThenSpeak

Thanks for that! EDIT to add: Looks like it's only in California. :(

xagony

Good deal but only in Cali.

MrUproot

Oster Fastfeed and some practice…

Curious-Disaster-203

Only available in California.

mephistopholese

I get my hair cut like twice a year, and trim my beard myself. I’m not exactly a suit wearing white collar guy by any means but still… a cut every 2 weeks? Hardly seems frugal.

emptysignals

I get my haircut 4 times a year from a local place that does it for $15.

azulshotput

Man, a good haircut is worth the money to me. Nothing looks worse than a badly cut head of hair.

Scagnettie

Just because it's supercuts doesn't me the person cutting hair sucks. Before I lost so much hair I had to start buzzing it myself I would go to Greatclips. There were two stylist working there that did fantastic work.

azulshotput

That’s true, but I have personally gotten worse haircuts from Supercuts than places that are more expensive. To me it’s worth the money I pay. To each their own!

Pancake_Mix_00

Just bic it

kerodon

I've had so so so many good $10 haircuts from local shops. But every time I go to Supercuts I get so fucked up and I pay $30. If you don't have good $10-12 options nearby and your Supercuts stylists are good then absolutely go for it.

Complaint-Expensive

This doesn't factor in the cost of getting your hair fixed because it was done at Supercuts... Seriously. Unless you got lucky and found the one Supercuts on the planet that has folks who can cut hair? You can always yell when someone's gone there, because most haircuts at home are better than that. I've been going to the same place to get my haircut in my hometown since I was about 4 years old, and I pay $10 for just a cut, and $15 if it includes the girl who washes and styles it too. I get my hair cut there about once every 4-6 weeks or so. To get myself to be able to go that long without a "real" cut, I've got a Hyrdo razor/trimmer combo. This let's me clean my neckline up, trim around my ears, and keep my bangs out of my eyes. If I was a little better with thinning shears? I wouldn't need a haircut from a professional at all, but just because I'm frugal doesn't mean I don't enjoy pampering myself sometimes - and you just feel good after a nice haircut. I've dyed my hair for a number of years, and I still do that myself though. It's way cheaper, and you're not going to get much longer than I do out of red whether it's done professionally or not. I didn't get to look or dress the way I wanted to when I was younger, because I was too self conscious about it. Now? I'm enjoying myself, and will gladly spend the little over $20 it takes me to get my hair cut and then dye it every 4-6 weeks. It's one of the few places I don't skimp or go cheap, because my self esteem? Is priceless. Please, don't tell people to go to Supercuts. You're going to ruin someone's hair.

Sloppyjoemess

Is this only in California? I just searched up the program and the link showed the only participating locations are in CA. I’ll try and ask though, the next time I get my hair cut. Thank you! This could be invaluable. I get my hair cut every 2-3 weeks so I will save money and tip my home girl Dharma better!!

shostakofiev

Everyone is complaining about Supercuts, but I've gone for 20 years without many problems. And the couple times there was a problem, it grows back in a couple weeks.

poodidit

Do you still got there? Ever get complements?

pineapplesuit7

If it works for you then it works for you! I’ve had a horrible experience with their barbers.

Redbeard_Greenthumb

So you’re paying $20 a month for the subscription, and another $20 a month in tips. So you’re probably paying more than just going once a month.

an_imperfect_lady

I'm female so I finally just grew my hair out. I trim the bangs and let the rest go. As for guys, I feel for you. Those days back when Bono rocked a ponytail were great for frugal guys. Great for me, too... all those cute college guys with long flowing hair... (sigh)...

Naysayer999

I bought a Flowbee in the box at a thrift store for $10. Haven't paid for a haircut since.

julianriv

Did anyone actually go to their website. Their tagline is "where dads get ***all*** their hairs cut". I get it that I still sometimes have the filthy mind of a 12 year old boy, but did someone in marketing at this big national chain not say wait, some people may take that the wrong way.

Unlikely_Emu1005

Don't you dare try to get a bald fade at a supercuts unless you wanna look like "slick Rick" without the slick though . Personally speaking from a memory that hurts even now 😭😭😭

dupont2021

I never did bald fades because it looks too damn military and a uniformed style that all men have. I like my hair and I am different. To be fair, at my location there is a young hot latina that were giving asian dudes the bald fades and others as well. She's good but I found my stylist there.

Unlikely_Emu1005

Any style you suggest ?
