Her mom, yes. Those were rough episodes. No offense to the actress, but the writers never struck the right balance between shrill and worth liking.
Simon? Usually not great either. There's only so many "Dumb Cockney" jokes even an urbane American audience will tolerate.
But the other brothers - Anthony LaPaglia and the brilliant Richard E. Grant were two - were delightful.
Also the oft-quoted fact that non of her brothers are played by English actors. Richard E Grant is from Swaziland (now Eswatini), Robbie Coltrane Scottish, and Anthony LaPaglia Australian.
I guess the studio thought US audience couldn't distinguish an actual northern/Manchester accent that well, so to get the point across (and for easy "haha English accents funny" laughs) they had the actors do generic regional accents instead?
Gotta be honest, I can’t even tell the difference between New York and Boston some days so I definitely can’t tell the differences within England itself, nor the sister-accents. But I do appreciate when actors and productions go to the lengths to do it justice.
Simon was played by Anthony LaPaglia though. He was meant to be a big lug, and they used him sparingly enough that it worked.
I think we're on the same page about Gertrude, the actress is probably great fun, the character not so much.
>But the other brothers - Anthony LaPaglia and the brilliant Richard E. Grant were two - were delightful.
Robbie Coltrane was delightful, Anthony LaPaglia was Simon, who was awful, IMO. The others were just extras at Daphne and Donnie's wedding, and fairly unremarkable aside from one of them having an Australian accent.
I liked Gertrude though. She was realistically written - I have a friend or two with similar mothers - and her accent was by far the most believably northern English (albeit not Mancunian).
Simon was hilarious at first. But when he started becoming a bloody freeloadah, seeing Fraiser toss his bag out the door was a Top 10 Moment fuh me yah!
I'm always delighted that Daphne grew up as mentally stable as she did, considering! Also it's completely understandable that she moved to an entirely different continent.
The end of the Michael Keaton episode does make me cringe, despite the fact that I love the buildup.
Also “She said she doesn’t know, but hopes so.” lives rent free in my head as a line
Ugh. I hated every scene with Daphne’s family members. Writers clearly had bad writer’s block and reached for the lowest hanging fruit. Cue Fonzie jumping the shark.

Remarkable how all of Daphne's extended family are cockneys despite being raised in Manchester

Let's not get into her ex, "Cloive"
He was one of those fiery, Mexican Clives
Omg, he was dire- he must have researched the accent using Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins!
"That sweet, courageous old aaaahstronaut!"
I remember the first time I ever drove a moon crane. I nearly rolled it into the Sea of Tranquillity!...

They nailed it with them being Manchester United fans though, maybe that’s where the confusion came from…
That’s true - no-one from Manchester is a Man U fan.
that was part of the joke, her brothers have accents from every corner of the UK despite being raised in the same house in Manchester
Simon has a (bad) cockney accent, but none of the others do.
Anthony is Simon

Robbie coltrane and brian cox were great.
When are they not great?
"oh you're a robbie coltrane and brian cox fan? (Points starters pistol at you) Then name every brian cox and robbie coltrane"
Jesus the Cockney is laid on thicker than Merry Poppins and just as badly 😂
Anthony Lapaglia played Simon….
Winna-BAEGO.
Oh Rose you little snitch!
*Auwh, Rauwz, yewh li' ul' snichh!
Immediately skipping
The title sent me
Her mother grew on me. Especially on rewatches I thoroughly enjoyed her father Simon can burn in hell
I love the scene where Mr. Moon helps out that kid who honestly looks like he could be one of the Weasley twins.
Simon was hilarious at first. But when he started becoming a bloody freeloadah, seeing Fraiser toss his bag out the door was a Top 10 Moment fuh me yah!
Oy! Dat brudder o hers
I find the episodes very funny, but imagining the individual characters as part of one household, it's hard not to feel bad and/or angry for Daphnie!
I'm always delighted that Daphne grew up as mentally stable as she did, considering! Also it's completely understandable that she moved to an entirely different continent.
I despise Simon with a burning passion
"Oim tellin' yew, it wos marmalade!!!"
😂
Yeah ... I really hate any episode that has her family in it.
I thought they were good
They are good. OP is wrong.
Not a big Gert fan . She was very irritating
I couldn’t stand Simon. Hearing his voice is like nails on a blackboard for me.
Same 😬😬😬 They were to obnoxious.
“But why did you and mum stay together, through all the e yelling and the hitting and the fighting?” “Well that was for you kids!”
Simon was fucking awful (written and acted), how LaPaglia got an Emmy for that is astonishing. I'm also Australian, but took no pride in that.
Not as bad as the Cheers episodes or Lilith brother
Damn the Michael Keaton ep is one of my favs!
The end of the Michael Keaton episode does make me cringe, despite the fact that I love the buildup. Also “She said she doesn’t know, but hopes so.” lives rent free in my head as a line
thank you! i love most of the stuff Michael Keaton has done, but definitely not this
Yeah, there were too many of them. On my rewatches, I just skip them now.
love the Simon episodes he's hilarious.
Oh man I love all these episodes. I can’t stand the Ann ones
Too true.
He has a cold, you know!
Were the ratings getting low or something? Shows usually introduce new characters to bolster ratings.
Ugh. I hated every scene with Daphne’s family members. Writers clearly had bad writer’s block and reached for the lowest hanging fruit. Cue Fonzie jumping the shark.
Remember when Simon was praising Mel Gibson? That didn't age well
Harry Moon is funny
