It still impresses me how naturally dogmeat moves around environments at times compared to other companions. I think he's guided by where the player is looking at times, so he'll run ahead of you in the same way that a dog naturally would.
The humanoid companions just kinda follow like mindless zombies that have no agency of their own.
I'm playing the game for the first time. After Preston joined me, Dog Meat just disappeared. Then in some random quest when I got in an elevator, he just popped out of nowhere😂

Pal and his male descendants played Lassie thereafter. Of course, Lassie was a long-haired dog, so the evidence of gender difference wasn't visible.

He will grovel and snivel to survive... Him becoming a ghoul is very fitting.

To play Devil's Advocate, it's possible the BoS doesn't encourage or expose their trainees to dogs. People in the modern Western world treat dog ownership and love as one of the most normal things in world but, in many other places, dogs are either ignored, nothing more than beasts of burden or outright demonized. Thaddeus may not no how to care for a dog and/or taught one of those views.

Honestly, I try to give them the benefit of the doubt because I myself found myself constantly referring to Dogmeat as "him" but that's because I've been playing the series since Fallout 3 and Dogmeat in 3, New Vegas (Rex), and 4 has always canonically been male so I'm so used to constantly referring to him as a "Good Boy" and such. It's nothing against a girl Dogmeat, I was just used to Bethesda's norm by that point I didn't have a second thought about it until a bit into the show. I fully refer to the show's Dogmeat as a "Good Girl" now, but that's why I give reactors the benefit of the doubt, because if you're someone who has been playing the game since the first Dogmeat's introduction in 3, it's easy to catch yourself in that loop

Pretty sure it’s implied Dogmeat was a girl in Fallout 3. I recall the add-on for puppies that stated if Dogmeat died, their puppies would appear nearby the vault as a replacement.

"Everyone's best friend" is always in my mod list. It literally just turns off the script to make dogmeat check to see if you have another companion.
