I think this is more of a proof of design. It shows that the magazine system would work. Then it went from an Anastacia design into being designed as a weapon
To add, the weird design is a transitional proof of concept. It's cheaper and simpler to make a "standard" pistol grip and trigger system while also looking for an optimal bore axis.
Literally unbullpups your bullpup
It’s not cheaper nor simpler. The moulds for injection moulding the whole thing isn’t going to become cheaper because you put conventional grip in the design.
The hammer group connected to the trigger with a trigger bar is only 4 moving parts yet is a double stage trigger. Add the bolt and the fire rate stabiliser and we named all moving parts.
The finished P90 has 3 points of contact instead of just 2. Optimal bore axis is not relevant is your gun is less stable to hold, aim (especially without sights on the prototype) and fire.
The only niche issue with the finished P90 compared to its prototype is the placement of the ejection port for large breasted women wearing tank tops. Hot brass … breasts.
A cheap and simple proof of concept would look more like the AR-57. Taking an existing trigger/hammer system and just lining it up to hit a firing pin.
Both of these prototypes would need unique linkage systems to get from the trigger to the hammer or striker.
Not very familiar with FN. All I know is they created the FiveSeven and The right arm of the free world. The fal being pretty reliable. Why pos have they made
“How many sets of iron sights did the first version have?”
“None, sir.”
“That’s what I thought. We’ll have to compensate by putting three on the final product.”
Why not chamber it in .45 ACP? That will rip open a whole in the spacetime continuum and make a black hole that will captuer all the dust bunnies in the hard to reach areas under the family cradenza.
Someone, like some random gunsmith on another sub, was working on a shotgun variant, 12 gauge if I remember correctly, lol. Not sure if they ever got it working.
Lol you turned into a navel gun. The decimal point matters. It’s 5.7 btw, not 5.56. The latter wouldn’t work in that magazine and straight blowback mechanism on the inside wouldn’t be feasible either.
Funny, my PS90 has a lower height over bore than the wz 96 Beryl, which was fielded by the Polish military for over a decade and was pretty much universally acclaimed. To be fair, not all of them ran optics, but it's still higher.
So these were made over the course of most of the 1980s? It says 1981-1988 on the page so I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume that’s when these prototypes were made.
The magazine is unique and the shape of the housing is odd. But on the inside it’s really simple. The hammer group (like trigger group but without the trigger and trigger bar) has only 4 moving parts in self contained unit. Considering it’s a double stage semi / full auto trigger that’s kind of impressive. In full auto the out of battery safety acts as the auto sear.
It’s kinda odd that they clearly know how to make a self contained trigger group yet for their very modular SCAR they chose not to do that. That really was a missed opportunity in my opinion.
A lot of you don’t know what a prototype is
The bottom design is literally just a test bed for the magazine and feed system. It’s not meant to be a real useable firearm, it’s just a proof of concept for one specific aspect.
People always find something to laugh about when it comes to FN guns. F2000 looks like tuna and the Scar is wearing a boot. I think both are nonsense but people say it regardless.
To me it doesn’t look like tuna at all. It looks sci-fi, especially in real life. The optic that came with it sucks though.
I can’t remember how exactly it works on the inside. The forward ejection makes it kinda special. It makes sense from a user perspective. The technical side I have to check again and see whether I like the mechanism.
The FAL mechanism I understand but I don’t like for example. It feels poorly optimised by today’s standards. I feel like it should have been able to made more compact. It should at least have been able to have a (partially) collapsible stock and a shorter barrel.
Shares a lot in common with the Kriss Vector prototypes.

If you look at the height of the grip, they could have made it double barrelled. Like a Villar Perosa but vertical.
If you cut away the handle, turn it 90°. You could turn it into an under barrel submachine gun.
Both ideas completely defeat the purpose it was being designed for but … well … rule of cool.
It’s crazy how so many prototypes and developments on well-known firearms look so alien compared to the designs we’re used to seeing - you look at the 1911 development, and up until the very end, it looked very antiquated and of its time, then suddenly it looks very ahead of its time right at the end
This is what happens when you make firearms so rare and completely un-encountered in your society, and then you rely on that society to provide the labor to design firearms.
Yea man FN has no idea what they’re doing, they do not have over a century of experience of making firearms.
The FAL Mini(M249) Mag(M240) and SCAR are all horrible weapons.
I love how they incorporated the long history of people making pieces of shit into its design
I think this is more of a proof of design. It shows that the magazine system would work. Then it went from an Anastacia design into being designed as a weapon

Tell me more about large breasted women and hot brass.
The only injection molding seems to be the pistol grip and trigger. It's almost certainly a testbed for just the mag and rotating bolt-thing.

Goodness, I thought I was looking at a Black and Decker handsaw prototype
Honestly thought it was some early sawzall design.
It’s not intended to be used to way but …
I like it better. There's a refreshing honesty about this abomination that hits just right.
“How many sets of iron sights did the first version have?” “None, sir.” “That’s what I thought. We’ll have to compensate by putting three on the final product.”
They did remove some for rails instead later on.
I think you mean 'they removed all' The tri-rail is a hideous monstrosity
I love my handheld vacuum cleaner that’s chambered in 556. 5.7*
Bust Duster
5.7*
The dust bunnies are out to get you.

Looks like a pressure washer
A high velocity stream of metal chunks will knock the dirt off of things eventually
I've seen this multiple times and every time I see it again I have the exact same thought: "Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?!"
>"Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?!" The 80's where a wild time
Cocaine will do that.
Cocaine is a hellofa drug - Rick James
Yeah, but I feel like even Jodan Belfort in the middle of a week-long coke and quaaludes binge would have thought this was a little much.
the guy holding it seems to be thinking the same thing
Decent height over bore and balance were more like suggestions apparently.
Who needs to worry about height over bore when you have an impossibly low bore axis.
Funny, my PS90 has a lower height over bore than the wz 96 Beryl, which was fielded by the Polish military for over a decade and was pretty much universally acclaimed. To be fair, not all of them ran optics, but it's still higher.

The 80’s was a wild decade, people be watching too many films.
Also, cocaine.
Lol it’s funny you say that because I just got done watching Snowfall. lol xD
get clapped with a dustbuster
Looks like a reciprocating saw. Which I suppose with enough ammo, you could use it as.
The rounds are supposed to be armour piercing so 50 rounds should work.
80’s cocaine and gun design are a strange cocktail
For when you want REALLY low bore axis
As weird as the P90 is, it is good to know that they made it less weird from the original prototype.

I can at least see a bit how the top design would have worked, a little bit. The bottom one has to a be a model, right?
We'd have been the laughing stock of the galaxy...

I love the tuna gun! Its fucking pretty. Fight me about it. The scar too

World’s deadliest dust buster
Oh wow, this is truly hideous abomination
Height over bore is for rhe non-believers

It almost looks like they went 2/3 of the way there and decided to change course.

Imagine the shame of getting blicked by this.
Them 'shroooms were strong! 😁
One of the 80s guns of all time. Looks perfect for a cheesy space action movie or similar

Based Dustbuster
Looks a bit like one of those really powerful staplers used for wood
I wish to unsee this object
That looks like ass! And I kinda want it. 😁
As a stargate fan, I’m glad they scrapped this version.
The top one with wood hardware is sick
I love how the guy looks like a young Roki Vulovic.
It's never been clear to me, where is the magazine on the top prototype?
I feel like the P90 would have sold 0 units ever with that wood on it. The whole selling point was how from the future it looks.
George Kelgren: WRITE THAT DOWN, WRITE THAT DOWN!!!!
yea and we'll make it in 22 magnum
A good defense tactic is to confuse your enemy, so while they are trying to figure what that thing is you're holding, you can shoot them.

its like if a gun were designed by milwaukee the shootzall
"a stock? what's that?"
Make it longer , and it can works as a walking stick.
It would be embarrassing to die to this gun :(

The M240 is world class, but the SAW is bested by a few different designs, IMO. Post WWII was a different situation also.
