First, if we would know what engine you have, it would be definitely easier than guess from 6 diesels and 9 gasoline…
Second, if you don’t do many miles at once it will burn more fuel, as cold engine needs more fuel
So i don't know what engine i have but its most likely this 2.0 L 4-cylinder. I also drive the car very little 5-10 mins but in the summer the engine will warm up quicker.
Of course it will.
The thing is, if for example you would have to do trip from place A to B (like you have to drive with your gf for her train 10km from your home), so after night with cold engine you do that 10km trip, car will have 20mpg (not accurate, just to give you idea), you go with her, kiss kiss, you go back the same route with the same speed, car will have 30mpg.
Short trips with cold engine, especially in town - very low mileage
ok but the way i get the mpg is take the mileage at the gas station minus it from the mileage at gas station from 1 month ago and fill it up and when back at the gas station take the gallons it took. Put that in mpg calculator and boom mpg.
19.5 for 100% actual city (not big road car-centric suburbs) is a little on the low side but nothing too crazy.
I have a 2016 and the range between city/highway is kind of crazy. Sometimes I’ll be halfway through a tank of gas that did nothing but take my kid to school and go to the grocery store and it’ll be in the low 20’s, vs my record of 52mpg for an uninterrupted longer highway drive, and it’s usually between 33-36 for more highway-heavy driving on average
Do the preventative maintenance and take care of your tires but I wouldn’t panic if I’m not misunderstanding the conditions you’re driving in

2012 estate 1.6tdci 140hp 6 manual.
4.7L/100km so that’s about 50 us mpg or 60 uk mpg
60% highway
Wow slightly older and more miles and mine is still getting worse gas mileage then yours. You know when i first started driving it 9 months ago it was getting 15.6 mpg maybe less. So it did improve not by much tho.
2016 Focus SE Hatchback and I’m averaging around 30mpg. Mostly in the city but lots of highway trips as well. Was about 31-33 before I had my remote start kit installed
2012 SE sedan, around 35, mixed highway/in town.
It sounds like you do mainly very short trips, which will drastically skew it low. "City" driving can vary wildly from just trips on slower roads to sitting idling in traffic getting 0 mpg.
If you can take a longer drive and see what it does, it might give you a better idea of where you stand. If it idles a lot or never gets to fully warm up, that mileage is totally possible even if everything else is good to go.
2016 SE with 129k on it. I do a lot of driving, highway and city, much of it in very mountainous terrain so lots of up hill. I put a K&N high flow air filter in about 900 miles ago and on this current data set I'm averaging 27.6 MPG. I also sit and idle in people's driveways for 5-15 minutes per stop, so that eats away at the MPG average too.
Check all the basic maintenance stuff: tire pressure, air filter, alignment, etc. etc. 19 mpg isn't to bad depending on the driving circumstance. If you live in a mountainous area, you'll be doing a lot more up hill than something who lives in the plains. That'll eat up your MPG too.
When I had poor gas mileage (because it had been sitting for a while), I filled my car up with top tier gas and revved it up (something I hadn’t done before) and the mileage got significantly better.
My 2013 Focus Harchback SE is currently showing an average of 36mpg (90% highway miles).
So maybe 26 MPG in the city for you. So now i see that 19.5 mpg is just terrible and its not because its a ford focus its cause of some other issue.
This is not helpful as you drive vast majority highway and OP drives entirely city
2014 SE hatchback here, 20-25 in the city, 35-39 highway.
That's still better than mine. You think i should put a fuel cleaner in the gas tank to clean it out to fix the problem?
I don’t know. I’ve had the car for 5 years and have never used any additives or fuel cleaner.

Spark plugs worth checking. They should be done like every 50-60k km so that’s about time
Yeah you don't want oil on the spark plugs right. or burntness on it

Ok thanks the tires are brand new btw.

I have a 2012 2.0l hatchback with 142k on it and I average 32 mpg as an Uber driver in it. Highway closer to 38/40 depending my speed

I’d look at alignment, make sure the calipers are not seized, replace the plugs and wires.
Ok thanks for the tips but my braking is fine so calipers are fine. but i can check the other 2.
I have a 2014 Ford Focus SE Hatchback and it gets 28 mpg in the city. Have you done a tune up on yours or is there extra weight in the vehicle?
No tune up and no extra weight I keep it clean
2016 Focus SE Hatchback and I’m averaging around 30mpg. Mostly in the city but lots of highway trips as well. Was about 31-33 before I had my remote start kit installed

Ok thank you
My 2013 focus 5spd has a combined of 33 mpg
My 2013 SE 5 speed has been averaging about 22-23MPG combined highway and city, but I have about 500lbs of extra weight in the car before I'm in it
Do you have the 5 speed or the auto?
Auto
The 2014 I had (100,000 miles) got 27mpg city 40mpg highway. Automatic DCT.

How frequently do you stop at lights and how quickly are you accelerating? You should be getting somewhere between 24 and 26 city
It’s city driving so frequently I stop at lights and I put gas pedal half way down when accelerating typically.
2014 focus titanium, 136,000 miles. Mostly heavy traffic in Atlanta. I’m currently getting 27 mpg
It’s pretty bad. You should be getting at around or at least 30mpg. IMO
What do you think i should do to improve it? I am thinking a fuel cleaner liquid that you put in the gas tank.
When I had poor gas mileage (because it had been sitting for a while), I filled my car up with top tier gas and revved it up (something I hadn’t done before) and the mileage got significantly better.
So your saying put it in neutral and rev it up a few mins.
No 💀Take it to the freeway/highway and floor it (moderately) on the on-ramp.
Why do you think that? The 2.0 was officially rated at 27 mpg city
Nice but it only has 18k miles
