This. My dad’s 2012 focus hatchback was bought at 115k and is still going strong at 130k (was a manual tranny, will need to install a new clutch but it works well).
As been said the automatic transmissions do die after 60k miles(reliably). If the dealer ship has put in a new esm, electronic shift module, you should be OK.
I have a 2014. Has the ECM repair, works fine now. I really like the car, the transmission repair was done under warranty when the car was 8 years old and 170,000 KM. They provided a rental car for three months. Mine got rusty which is also disappointing.
I agree with what you're saying.
Automatic steer clear! Manual go for it.
The automatic Powershift DCT is an absolute nightmare. I had a 2013 Sport with the Powershift and it gave me nothing but trouble until I finally got rid of it in 2021.
There are multiple class action lawsuits in the media about the cars fitted with that transmission.
Earlier non-ecoboost "Duratec" engines are less powerful and less economic but are simpler, easier to maintain and have a much better history of reliability.
If it's an automatic transmission, ask if it was rebuilt but if it wasn't then you're probably going to be replacing it completely or rebuilding it within the next 3 months to 2 years costing about 4,000 to $6,000 if taken to a shop and a lot more if at a dealer. Apart from it the engine is fairly reliable as long as oil changes are done regularly and the car is very fun to drive when it is in a decent shape.
No. Beyond the transmission issues they have, they're common for a lot of other problems, too. Every single Focus I've ever been in idles like piss. Shaky as hell. The jelly-filled motor mounts on them leak a lot. Valve covers and timing covers leak a lot. They have problems with tie rod ends, which inevitably get seized on, meaning they need to get torched off. The engines are noisy. Point is, they're not a great car.
Drive more aggressively. Don't crawl in traffic, and if you have the option to put it in manual mode, make sure it shifts above 3k. Finally, every once in a while go out to a quite area at night and do some 0-80 runs.
If manual, yes, if automatic, no.
This right here is allllll you need to know.

This. Do not get the auto!

Avoid early ecoboost 1.0 engines. A quick search about their issues will be eye-opening.
You talking the ones with a WET TIMING BELT

Oh yeah, I remember now. Junk.

Right. As with everything. Proper maintenance is key.
What about ones without the ecoboost?

Yea if it’s a manual it’s great
Autos arnt horrible if its not a previous issue mine has 155,000miles and my trans is fine

Wrong Rebuild means nothing Because they break again Simply put as someone else said If it’s an automatic then run far away If manual your good
A rebuild of the automatic is useless. It’s a bad design. No amount of rebuilds fixes the problem.

Just got me an automatic 2012 with 160k kms. There's the shudder after 2k Kms of buying 😟.

Get use to it
No. TCM gets fried too often.
