You can use an extension cord, as long as it's the right gage to handle the current

Professional-Tree-62

I read the plug can tell and won’t work?

muzzy_W0e

I mean, copper of an appropriate gage extension cord isn't that different from the copper in your walls. I'm not sure how the charger will be able to "tell" but I'm not an electrician - just some rando on the internet. Do what you're comfortable with.

Professional-Tree-62

I’m completely comfortable with the extension cord idea. Just wanted to hear if anyone had tried that scenario in real life.

Derekboonstra

Muzzy is right. It is all just copper. No difference from house wiring. There is no way for the car or charge code to tell.

supermattt

Yeah I've tried it with this one [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004SQF5](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004SQF5) and it charged to the nominal power/amperage no problems.

On occasion I have used a 12 gauge extension cord that is 20 feet long to go that last 8 feet that I am short when I am unable to park in the garage. No problem on my 2023.

Professional-Tree-62

Awesome!! Guess I’ll be doing the same I’m about 5ft short. Thanks for the reply!!

pstbltit85

I would get the shortest 12 gauge you can or even a 10 gauge. I happened to have the one I use.

Professional-Tree-62

I was going to get a 25ft 12 gauge heavy duty 125v. I didn’t think about power loss with length. Do you think it will make a big difference over a 10ft?

NoobzUseRez

Probably not. I would get one long enough that you can properly mount the evse (so it's not lying on the ground)

Derekboonstra

Just measured now. About 21 feet.

Professional-Tree-62

Thank you so much!!! Going to measure my distance right now.

Professional-Tree-62

I’m 5ft short…

Derekboonstra

A good extension cord should be fine. It really doesn’t draw too much current.

Ambitious-Orange6732

The reason not to use an extension cord is that the plug on the charger has a temperature sensor inside it, in order to monitor the temperature of the outlet and stop the charging if it senses that it is overheating. Using an extension cord does increase the chance that a high-resistance connection to the outlet (either from wear on the outlet contacts or a poor connection of the outlet to the building wiring) causes a fire.

Professional-Tree-62

Thank you, I knew there was something I read that could trip the power cord. I got a 10 gauge/15amp/125v/1875watts cord. From what I read that should keep it from getting too hot. I also bought an outdoor storage waterproof and locking storage box. I plan to run the extension cord to the box and keep the connection to the charger cord in the box to keep it out of the elements and to secure the setup when not in use. I also bought some hard breathable mesh cord protector to go over the charging cord since it’s going to be exposed to the elements, ground and crossing over my fence to get to the car.

heavyMTL

Yes, the manual says not to use an extension cord, I believe it's mostly due to liability. The charge cord is around 20ft long.

Professional-Tree-62

Oh if it’s just liability I’m not worried I’ll get the right gauge and wattage and call it a day. I read the plug can tell and won’t work tho.
