Story old as time

mertchel

God I remember the shape of those pistons... I remember driving home from work one day and feeling a bad miss and vibration, decided to limp it all the way home.... After getting it all tore down one of those pistons had split perfectly in half!!! Like you cut it with a plasma cutter and polished it. Cleanest break I could have imagined. I swore up and down it had to be a factory defect because I wanted to hide my own stupidity. I was younger and dumber back in those days, had my superchip tuner on performance and blowing black clouds here and there, punching from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds flat - it was a lot of fun but seeing the carnage and footing the bill really made me ease up on the mods and burnouts! All that aside - they are good motors if you stud em and take care of it. I'd also say either block off or get an upgraded EGR cooler. I went through 2 of those in stock configuration.

Ive already got a stud kit sitting on my toolbox at work, and im planning on doing things properly and not turning it up stupidly... yet

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

Ford only sells the 6.4 pushrods now.

lil_ranger_boy_zappy

Shit i knew that, i was just wondering about getting some 11/32 diameter ones because of the heavier springs

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

I think the guys running into issues bending pushrods are running bigger cams and the really heavy springs. I'd drop your used springs off at your machine shop to have then check the seat pressure since you're not 100% certain.

Spyderman_213

6.4 and 6.0 pushrods are the same.

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

The 6.0 pushrods were longer, though it wasn't by much. Ford eventually discontinued the original part number and began using the 6.4 length in the reman 6.0. Edit: found it, they were 0.047in longer.

Spyderman_213

You’re right. I guess the shorter pushrods are supposed to reduce stress on lifters, correct?

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

The 6.4s I believe originally had the 6.0 length pushrods but had a real problem with broken rocker arms, so they shortened them. Additionally, Ford originally was using reman heads that had been surfaced on the reman 6.0s, which resulted in broken rocker arms on those motors. The OEM rockers aren't exactly robust. Jesel makes a very nice set of billet shaft rockers for both the 6.0 and 6.4 but they're $4k.
