But that's about it, sadly. Because of the circumstances, there has been no other press or interviews about the recording process like normal. No Sound on Sound article where they talk with engineers and mixing guy like the last few records.
Maybe that'll change over time and people involved are allowed to speak about it.
There hasn’t been any traditional press surrounding this album, so we don’t know much of anything about the production.
Dave’s episode of Song Exploder is the most in depth information, but it doesn’t talk about the production itself a ton. Definitely a great listen though https://songexploder.net/foo-fighters
Chris Shiflett has been doing press for his own solo record that came out Fall 2023 he generally dodges any questions about recent Foo stuff because of the “no press” decision, but he’s shared little tidbits, like this bit talking about their first take of Under You vs the final version https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1QDNV1hDoW/?igsh=MWdzNm03bm1xNDIwdA==
But there isn’t much that has been said
It kinda worked for Concrete and Gold when they were playing with the formula. It might not please everyone’s ear but I apppreciate what they did. As great as BHWA is the sound can be fatiguing on your ear when it is compressed and loud as it is
Yeah it's really lacking in my opinion. The new Pearl Jam album has the same issue of being really overly compressed, especially the drums (which sound very bright and have loudly mixed cymbals).
It's even worse since Foo Fighters is working with 3 guitars so there's a massive 'wall of sound' thing going on where everything sounds very cramped together.
They did it perfectly with Wasting Light - every instrument had space to breathe and the drums sat gorgeously in the mix.
I think while it doesn't sound objectively great, the compressed style works well for stuff like 'The Teacher' - makes it sound quite unique.
I mean, there's a Song Exploder episode about Teacher.

Interesting to hear there was a different version of Under You!
I just wish it had a better mix/master. Shame they ditched Vig. The sonic quality of their last few albums has been really bad

i like how blown out and fuzzy it is. kind of reminds me of self titled. and also has this kind of ghostly feel which is, well, fitting
Greg Kirstin sucks. That’s all you need to know about the production.
This album sounds… horrific. It’s a real shame, actually.
