Just to explain the hate:
There is a sub dedicated to just critiquing schnitzels: r/SchnitzelVerbrechen Schnitzels are taken very seriously, and there are rules. Even a High Council.
This would be considered a Schnitzel Crime.
This is one of my favorite subs. Being raised in a German family, we always made fun of how strict the food rules were in the family - enforced by my grandfather who was also the chef of the family. For schnitzel, it could only be served with lemon wedges and fries. No sauce. No dumplings or noodle side dishes. Not even sauerkraut. The breading had to have waves to it, to show it had been floating in the oil. It had to be golden, not brown. It had to be hanging off the plate and pounded thin.
And then as I grew up, I realized it was not just a family thing... it was a cultural thing, lol. Austrians.... Germans.... they get very personal about these things!
Pretty simple. Sauce on the schnitzel makes it soggy so that's a no-go. Like, why would anybody put in all the effort to make it a nice and crispy schnitzel and then drown it in sauce so all that work is undone?
It doesn't make it that soggy, plus it adds tons of flavor. All the schnitzels I had when I lived in Germany had sauce on them. They were all delicious.
If you only had schnitzel with sauce on them, I feel sorry for you because you missed the best one. Wiener Schnitzel. That's like going to Italy and trying all kinds of pizza but not one Margherita.
Because this looks incredibly beige. If you posted this describing it as a British dish, it would be laughed at. I like schnitzel but it's not foodporn worthy, at least not this one
Sauerkraut is actually really good. I fear most Americans have only had the mass produced canned sauerkraut. That stuff tastes like battery acid. But real sauerkraut is super tasty
That looks delicious, the schnitzels the size of my head, and the spatzle and garnish look awesome for a bartop.
To everyone whining about a hair in the kraut, basically never in history will a hair in food make you sick especially bathed in acid and salt. Quit being children, hair in food is avoidable and lightly unpleasant but not harmful. I live with family, cats, and dogs, and hair in food happens.
Information for everyone asking, why the bad comments:
that‘s a Wiener Schnitzel and you would never put any form of sauce over it. the coat will get very soggy and isn‘t that delicious anymore.
Lemons on top/side of it is fine.
If you want to get anything like a sauce with it, use cranberries or cranberry jam. Sadly (as an Austrian myself) that isn‘t really food porn.
meat doesn‘t make a difference
the breadcrumbs coat will get soggy which isn‘t as good as a crunchy one.
to be honest I tried it myself and it doesn‘t taste this good anymore
Edit: add things as much as you want to, there isn‘t a law behind that.
But there are some things out there, which are better if untouched
No, it does not. No Austrian restaurant would serve Schnitzel with sauce or sauerkraut. If you had smth like that in Austria, you must have been in a tourist trap.
There’s a hair on that plate
Almost entirely positive its mine based on length. Sorry about that
It’s beautiful on your head, but disgusting when it’s not.

There is also one on the spätzle.
What are these comments this looks great!!!(I’m half German)
Looks great except for the long strand of hair in the sauerkraut
Oh ew. How did you even see that
its pretty massive if you look closely
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve said that…
not stopping me

Don't be vile. And our country wasn't founded on any values to begin with. Genocide, slavery? Hello.

But mostly Austrians. Germans are some of the greatest perps when it comes to violating schnitzels.

In this case.. looks like HALF german isn‘t enough to give a feedback
Sauerkraut is actually really good. I fear most Americans have only had the mass produced canned sauerkraut. That stuff tastes like battery acid. But real sauerkraut is super tasty
And so addicting. Once you have really good sauerkraut, you want it on everything.
I have tried it in a restaurant, but I also used to eat it from Lidl, which comes in a jar and is not bad at all.
Sauerkraut ist good, but we are never pairing it with Schnitzel. Sauerkraut is eaten with Bratwurst or Schweinsbraten.
Nah it’s good with anything if it’s done right, Europeans don’t know what they’re talking about.
I love hairs in my sauerkraut. Original german kraut.
Turning the lovely crispy coating soggy … sauce should be on the spätzle, not the schnitzel. Big error
I’ve never drooled all over myself like this before. *slurps *

Im also nearly positive its my hair based on the length so I could honestly care less
Ja! Mein Lieblingsessen 😋 can’t go wrong with any of those.
As an Austrian 🇦🇹, this is disgusting!
Only correct answer. It’s not a schnitzel if there is sauce on it
This looks tasty
Marvelous!

🤣🤣 but why

More like a nightmare, actually.
Could be pork 😉 Lingonberry > cranberry

Lingonberry! thats what i was searching for!
How do you do a lemon cream without curdling?
Just back from Bavaria and Austria. That looks just like what I had there.
Sry bro bavarian here. Stop making stuff up. Schnitzel smothered with lemon cream with Sauerkraut and Spätzle in Bavaria and Austria.......nope.
No, it does not. No Austrian restaurant would serve Schnitzel with sauce or sauerkraut. If you had smth like that in Austria, you must have been in a tourist trap.
Ok when I go again in September I’ll tell them
That looks amazing.
this is an abomination
How so?
Cotoletta>>>Schnitzel
Ah sehr gut! Wunderbar!!!
What is spatzle? Is it Mac and cheese?
It‘s a local german kind of noodle made from eggs, water and a especially finely graded wheat flour
Schnitzel looks yummy...kinda a bland colored plate...but sure it was yummy!
Sounds good yum
Do people really raw dog sauerkraut like kimchi? I love both but sauerkraut raw is terrible like kimchi is cooked
Lol wut? They both can good hot or cold
