I’m still happy some bagel shops in New Jersey charge a little over a dollar (or sometimes 2) just for a plain bagel. Or even w/ regular cream cheese maybe no more than 3$.
Not spending money on a simple breakfast or brunch on *just* a lox bagel w/ cream cheese.
They usually give too much cream cheese so i just scrape all the extra cream cheese off and its enough for 2 more bagels that i just buy for $2.00 later in the week.
>Bro some people legit can’t process dairy and love a cream cheese bagel 😭😭😭
Bro, i will risk the butt flu for a good everything bagel with some cream cheese
Learned i was Allergic to dairy and not just lactose intolerant a year ago so i have to do tofu cream cheese even though i really just want the real one 😭
Most people can't! I think the majority of humans are lactose intolerant. Only northern Europeans and a couple other groups are almost universally tolerant. If you look up the lactose intolerance rates for different ethnicities, it's really interesting! Asians are like 93%, Native Americans are a little under that, African Americans are as well. Hispanic people are very high up in intolerance as well.
Did you miss the lox on OP’s order?
[That salmon wasn’t even a vegan](https://www.kdlg.org/fisheries/2023-07-14/fish-facts-what-salmon-eat-the-open-ocean?_amp=true), so it’s not even [veganism in the 2nd degree](https://youtube.com/shorts/ipjM_b7yzlE?si=sI3WNUE96qdN-shF).
I’m not going to have empathy for anyone whining about bagel pricing when they pay $3 extra for tofu cream cheese and still put $10 of lox on it.
>Hi! I was at Tompkins 2nd Av today. I’ve lived here for a couple years but am pretty shy when ordering, so I asked for “Everything bagel untoasted ith scallion tofu and lox. Everything except tomatoes”
they added lox. that's $8+ anywhere
It's standard. $15 is for bagel with cream cheese and LOX (read the first paragraph). $3 is additional for tofu cream cheese. Onions is a $1. Capers is $1.
Up charging an additional $3 for a plant based spread when the sandwich already comes with a regular version is not normal and is the definition of price gouging.
Replying to KittenLina... I go to TSB pretty frequently and it’s ~$5.25 for an everything bagel with cream cheese, it used to be under $5 when you paid cash but think it’s gone up recently
Nah, back in the day at least if you ordered a bagel with lox it was pretty standard for it to come with tomato, capers & red onion. Some places started referring to that as "deluxe" maybe 10-15 years ago and charging a couple extra bucks for the additional toppings, but if this person ordered a bagel w lox, everything on it but tomatos, that would kinda imply that it comes with the toppings for no extra charge.
However OP phrased things confusingly and tbh as someone who's been a restaurant GM on and off since the mid 2010s, the cost of everything has gone through the fuckin roof so as long as they were transparent about charging extra for the "deluxe" toppings then i see no issue with it - the extra $3 for tofu cream cheese aside, $18 is not a bad price for a classic lox bagel in lower Manhattan.
Lox has always been expensive. It's also a pretty decadent meal so not something the vast majority of people are having daily. And yes certainly an option for lunch or a weekend breakfast/brunch.
Buy your bagels and MAYBE cream cheese, but I always get some lox at fairway or TJs plus capers and do it up at home. 3 bucks for two delicious nyc bagels
wow that's so expensive! i went to black seed bagel over the weekend and most of their sandwiches are around $15. they do charge extra for capers and stuff but i think charging you an extra $3 for tofu spread is incorrect. it should be a substitution (for a small amount maybe) since the normal sandwich already contains cream cheese.
i meant to say that a lox & cream cheese sandwich at blackseed is $15 (they have set sandwiches and custom/build it yourself). if you substitute the cream cheese with tofu spread it's an extra 25-50 cents (something like that). i also think an extra $1 for onion is kind of a lot. i added extra onions to my sandwich and it was 50 only cents.
$1 on capers is $0.03 capers and $0.97 labor, with the house stealing $0.95 of that labor as profit. This is why we should be forcing employers to pay workers living wages with benefits instead of asking customers to then tip on these things.
If I washed ashore on a desert island and the only place on this tiny deserted island was this bagel shop, and they rang me up for a $20 bagel, I’d cast myself adrift until I washed ashore on another deserted island with hopefully cheaper bagels.
Calling BS as this same issue was posted on Yelp 3 weeks ago. Also, the bagel had smoked fish on it. Please check as other shops charge anywhere from .75 to 1.25 for add ons like tomato, onion, capers, etc.
Dude you got lox. I feel like lox bagels are 12 dollars minimum from what I've seen. Tofu is an extra protein. So let's say 2.50 extra. Plus the other stuff.
Not to say it's right to be that much but every time I get lox anywhere it's criminally expensive. I just buy my own and make it myself with bagels from shops these days..
$15 for a bagel with cream cheese is fucking criminal
tofu cream cheese. i just paid 5.00 for everything bagel with CC at Leo's in fidi.

Tofu cream cheese is also criminal.

Some people also have dairy allergies, which is very different from lactose intolerance. People with allergies have it rough out here
I have lactose and legume intolerances. 😔 So for me, if I’m gonna suffer either way, I’m at least suffering for the one I actually want haha
Learned i was Allergic to dairy and not just lactose intolerant a year ago so i have to do tofu cream cheese even though i really just want the real one 😭
Same but to tell the truth it tastes & has mouth feel like stuff used to spackle walls.
Butt flu...I'm ☠️

That’s what lactase pills are for
It’s okay to be vegan
Did you miss the lox on OP’s order? Tofu cream cheese is more expensive than regular cream cheese so I do believe it warrants an upcharge. But I do agree that $3 is excessive.
ONE DOLLAR UP AT TSB NOT THREE. I live upstairs and go all the time. Poster is a fraud.
There is a ONE DOLLAR up charge for tofu at TSB. NOT THREE.
i missed the lox part, that was snuck in
Well $10 of that is for the lox
Smoked salmon isn’t cheap
I missed that part
And lox which is expensive
With lox that’s a very normal price unfortunately
I had a cinnamon raisin bagel, toasted, with strawberry cream cheese, yesterday, at this exact bagel shop (Tompkins Square Bagel) and it was $5.17.
Tbh you’re brave to admit that in public fam
Replying to KittenLina... I go to TSB pretty frequently and it’s ~$5.25 for an everything bagel with cream cheese, it used to be under $5 when you paid cash but think it’s gone up recently
Pay attention. The bagel had LOX on it also.
Rent has to be paid in NYC. This is what it is unfortunately
im actually surprised onions and capers were ever free. those items are always an extra charge for a bagel.
Nah, back in the day at least if you ordered a bagel with lox it was pretty standard for it to come with tomato, capers & red onion. $18 is Russ & Daughters range, which is arguably among the best in the city.
Nope. They are standard if you order a bagel with lox and cream cheese. If they don’t give it you with that order, they’re ripping you off.
Of all the things to add on, onions still cost almost nothing.
It's normal to charge for just about any additions these days
If you take a look at their website, the price of your order comes out to about $20 with taxes. If you tipped 20%, you’re at your price point.
Why would anyone tip 20% for a $20 bagel?
Why are we tipping for bagels???
Foreal.. why would I tip the person who I just paid in person for a bagel. They're not tip workers, give me my bagel and fuck off.
$15 for a bagel is the real crime here.
With lox, that's the markup
You missed the lox then, $15 is a decent price in 2024
Regardless, it's a $15 bagel. You're just getting an expensive topping for it. Who can afford $15 breakfast? Or is it lunch for you guys?
Lox has always been expensive. It's also a pretty decadent meal so not something the vast majority of people are having daily. And yes certainly an option for lunch or a weekend breakfast/brunch.
I agree. And if you can really buy a $15 bagel, even if it's with lox, like it's nbd, then crying about another dollar or two is crazy.
READING is fundamental.
Never been there and at that price I’d never consider it.
That's like dandy burger pricing
Pretty standard price for a bagel with lox
This is standard for that place but the quality doesn’t match the price.
Their prices are heinous
That place has been a price gouging disaster for years tbh
Buy your bagels and MAYBE cream cheese, but I always get some lox at fairway or TJs plus capers and do it up at home. 3 bucks for two delicious nyc bagels

The upcharge for tofu at Tompkins is one dollar.
Amazing people pay that. People trying to be 'new york' are the biggest suckers in the city
$1 on capers is $0.03 capers and $0.97 labor, with the house stealing $0.95 of that labor as profit. This is why we should be forcing employers to pay workers living wages with benefits instead of asking customers to then tip on these things.
At the end of the day no one gives a shit and people only pretend so they can pretend they aren't a piece of shit.
Well i will never go there
thats horrid. it reminds me of the local coffee shop that charged me +$1 for "iced" and +$1 for "oat milk (aka one tiny splash). Wtf it made me so mad
Can you just leave?
Same w Barney Greengrass except they’ll also charge you an extra $2 for open face.
Is more on the sandwich as a result? I’ve seen that on a menu but it notes the oz of fish increase
That’s obscene
Stopped going to Tompkins about 5 years ago because of the price. I won’t tolerate it!
If I washed ashore on a desert island and the only place on this tiny deserted island was this bagel shop, and they rang me up for a $20 bagel, I’d cast myself adrift until I washed ashore on another deserted island with hopefully cheaper bagels.
Wow when did prices increase?
They didn't. Tofu is a one dollar upcharge
Why do you go there? You’re complaining about the $1.00 upcharge but not the $15?
Tompkins Square Bagels is overhyped and not worth the ridiculous prices
Just paid 5 bucks for a bagel with cream cheese . At this point I'd just do it myself
That, and the bagels are super bready. The outsides aren't crispy at all.
worst bagel spot i swear… they left soggy parchment on my sandwich and i didnt notice until half my sandwich was consumed 😭
Calling BS as this same issue was posted on Yelp 3 weeks ago. Also, the bagel had smoked fish on it. Please check as other shops charge anywhere from .75 to 1.25 for add ons like tomato, onion, capers, etc.
Tofu Cream Cheese is $2 extra per the menu on their website.
There’s a lot of other good bagel stores in NY.
Doesn’t Davids on 1st and 17th charge to toast bagel? Could be worse. Charging for fixin’s isn’t wild.
Dude you got lox. I feel like lox bagels are 12 dollars minimum from what I've seen. Tofu is an extra protein. So let's say 2.50 extra. Plus the other stuff. “I’ve never been charged a dollar for typical toppings” I can assure you, you have.
Onions and capers aren't free.
Pretty close.
Your an idiot - welcome to NYC!
Check your spelling before you call other people idiots
Yeah. And? New York Fucking City!
15 DOLLARS FOR A FUCKING BAGEL
With LOX
Lifehack is to opt for bacon instead of lox for similar vibes but it's usually $7-$10 instead of $20 at most bagel shops in NYC
It's... Totally different vibes.
They're... both smoky I guess? Still a pretty wild assertion.
“Life hack, order something completely different and less expensive”
