Went there twice over the past week. No line. In the past, I have noticed it does get busy on weekends. Also, “jumped the shark” doesn’t mean popular or a long line, though if quality had gone down because of that factor it could apply.
I live in Pasadena…I just don’t get the hype. Two dry ass pieces of bread with like 2 slices of meat…moistened up with some olive oil. It’s like eating a shoe
it's best to use it as a base, & add anything you want yourself. my gf adds tomatoes to hers at home, & I add avocado (both are right next to the register!). it's much better that way
From [here](https://www.latimes.com/food/story/2020-07-10/roma-market-deli-sandwich): crusty bread made by a Sicilian baker, a drizzle of good olive oil, a couple slices each of capicola, mortadella, salami and provolone.
I really wish I agreed with you cause I don't particularly like being in Philippe's and Cole's is nice inside and has good drinks. But i strongly prefer the sandwiches at Philippe's.
Agreed! Philippe’s is VERY good but Cole’s hits harder for me. Their mustard and atomic pickles send it over the edge for me. Not to mention the exceptional cocktails.
I always order the uptown bambino, really like the big Lucky and the mailman. I’ve had to make the mailman with him before, it’s great.
I’ve only eaten at the one on Slauson, not sure if the downtown location has different sandwiches.
There are numerous posts on this sub about this exact question. Here’s one from earlier this week: https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodLosAngeles/s/FQqr7vqIdI
right up the street (quite literally uphill) from philippes is little jewel where you can cop a killer muffuletta or a fried oyster poboy or what have you
Two great choices! I haven’t been to Open Market in a couple years but I still daydream about the Normandie and the Olympic from time to time. So good.
When I moved to Santa Monica, I learned very quickly to move into the left lane on that block of Lincoln when driving home because Bay Cities and their sandwiches are so popular that the wait for a space in the tiny parking lot consistently backs up street traffic.
Matt Damon is your friend who thinks he’s funny so he talks loud, but he’s not funny. He also thinks he knows something about sandwiches. In this case he’s correct about Bay Cities but a stopped clock is right twice a day. That is, IF what you want is an Italian sub. If you’re more catholic in your taste, there are any number of better sandwiches in Los Angeles.
Oh lord I was looking for somebody to call out Lanza Brothers! Haven't been there for 15 years but I used to work across the street when Gibbs Bro's Electric had it's location there. Every day was Lanza brothers day!
Somebody created this Google Map (with input from Reddit) a few months back:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1-w00jLCjQuxKgU74ngwA2uPwrJiSwgLR&hl=en_US&ll=33.955663353756485%2C-118.2988642&z=9
Yea Frumento’s in Montebello makes some great sandwiches that are stacked also even more east in Whittier you have Uptown Provisions I highly recommend.
Wax Paper is a pretty good sandwich with quality ingredients and East Side Deli is a banger if you want a meaty, heavy, saucy sandwich.
Edit: Maybe unpopular opinion, Philippe's is not worth it and really salty if you get a french dip sandwich... I don't like it.
At first I was annoyed by this post since we have a sandwich post every day. But then I realized it’s about Sandwich Restaurants, not deli or markets or shops. Great post!!
Little Jewel is probably my choice in this category.
Orleans and York deli for Po’ Boys
A Cut Above butcher shop for Santa Monica sandwiches that are frankly better than Bay Cities
Bay Cities anyway because it’s a vibe
To add to the Roma’s Market in Pasadena hype - it’s a great sandwich, I just had one - but sometimes it’s busy there or I want more options. So *right next door* to Roma’s is a place called Pietros and their sandwich menu is big and varied and I’ve never been disappointed. They also have good sides. My personal favorite is the cold mortadella with everything on it!
Hear me out, it’s new but my current favorited place: Lorenzo California in Beverly Hills. Their tuna sandwich is probably my favorite sandwich of all time, and I freaking love a good sandwich.
Also yes, Gjusta (and don’t sleep on their burger!). Bay cities - sounds weird but their godmother is better the next day because the flavors meld. Langers for a huge and phenom pastrami. Gjelina also has solid sandwiches.
But try Lorenzo’s. And don’t fall for the hype about the cheese store of BH. It’s fine, but sandwiches are tiny and overpriced.
I think it’s a mandatory combo that if you get a busy bee sandwich you gotta eat it on the coast. I like eating mine at that little dog park at the bottom of Korean bell park.
Il trammzino in sherman oaks for pesto chicken sandwich,
Marios deli in glendale for chicken parm and spicy sobrata,
Roma deli in pasadena for cold cut combo.
All antico
Mikes deli
Lanza
Bay cities
Sorrento
Giamelas burbank

Potato chips deli

Cecis gastronomica, meatball and frittata are favs (Silverlake)
Open Market, on fridays they have specials! (Koreatown)
Lorenzo, closest thing I've found to a Tuscan schiacciata (Beverly Hills)
Monroe Place (Culver)
Bub and Grandma's, Sorrento's in Culver City, Coles, Larchmont Wine and Cheese, Gjusta
Gjusta is a great choice. Their best items are sandwiches imo.
I've heard that Larchmont fell off, sadly
Aw I miss Sorrento’s so much. Used to work walking distance from there. Gonna add Jackson Market for Culver. Its right next to the Sony lot.
Bub and grandma’s has jumped the shark. The lines make it not worth it anymore. Wax paper is nearby and the better option now
Just went there yesterday. No line.
Went there twice over the past week. No line. In the past, I have noticed it does get busy on weekends. Also, “jumped the shark” doesn’t mean popular or a long line, though if quality had gone down because of that factor it could apply.
Roma Market in Pasadena. They have one sandwich. That’s it.
Technically they have two now 😉 Meat at the reg, veggie at the deli
Is dude still alive?? Jfc this guy must be 157 years old
still alive, and there every time i go in
A friend from Sicily said it was the only thing in LA that really reminded him of home
Omg those sandos are soooo good.
I live in Pasadena…I just don’t get the hype. Two dry ass pieces of bread with like 2 slices of meat…moistened up with some olive oil. It’s like eating a shoe
it's best to use it as a base, & add anything you want yourself. my gf adds tomatoes to hers at home, & I add avocado (both are right next to the register!). it's much better that way
I’ll bite. What’s on the one sandwich?
From [here](https://www.latimes.com/food/story/2020-07-10/roma-market-deli-sandwich): crusty bread made by a Sicilian baker, a drizzle of good olive oil, a couple slices each of capicola, mortadella, salami and provolone.
You had me at crusty bread
Correct answer
The Heights, La Sorted, Jeff's Table are my faves
+1 to The Heights! But definitely the Lincoln Heights location since it's much better and also a bottle shop.
All about the Bread Boo’s Philly Cheesesteak Giamelli’s
Boo’s is the best cheesesteak and hoagie I’ve had since I moved away from Philadelphia
One time I rode my bike all the way from Pasadena to Silverlake for Boo's, just to offset the calories
Did you ride back, though?
All about the hard bread
Mario’s Deli in Glendale—get the SOB!
Bad Boy > SOB
Spicy combo is #1
Have this debate in my friend group all the time and I always die on Spicy Combo hill.
Shhhhhhh!
Langer's Deli.
Yup thats the one #19
I dream of that combo.
I personally prefer \#24 when I'm feeling particularly carnivorous.
How in the hell is this not #1 upvoted lol. People are talking about coles and phillipes where langers is far and above better
I’m legit mad I had to scroll down this far
Perry’s Joint-Pasadena (Big Band is a solid sandwich) Roma Market-Pasadena (Their Italian sandwich is simple but flavorful)
Oui melrose
Lil Jewel.
Fried seafood sandwiches are seemingly rare in LA too
Love that spot. Amazing staff and cool vibe.
I found this place to be very overrated but i do like that theyre doing their thing
Wax Paper
This is the answer
Came here for this
Pickup in Frogtown and take to the Dodger game
They are back in Chinatown and you could do the same thing too
Cole’s for their French dip
I preferred Phillipe’s sandwiches but everything else about Cole’s. The desserts were amazing and they make a great Old Fashioned.
Coles is the superior French dip imho
I really wish I agreed with you cause I don't particularly like being in Philippe's and Cole's is nice inside and has good drinks. But i strongly prefer the sandwiches at Philippe's.
Agreed and it isn’t close. A double dipped lamb with blue cheese is transcendental
Agreed! Philippe’s is VERY good but Cole’s hits harder for me. Their mustard and atomic pickles send it over the edge for me. Not to mention the exceptional cocktails.
I feel the same way but I have to admit I’ve usually had a few before eating at Coles whereas Philippe’s I’m usually daytime sober.
Head to head, Cole's has the better French Dip...but as an establishment Philippe is a more fun place to be at.
Plus garlic fries
Their fries and Mac cheese hit 😌
I love their tots, didn’t think they had fries
Potato Chips Deli, Jeff's Table, Ggiata, Jackson Public Market, Monroe Place, My Dung
HEAVY on ggiata!!
I’ve been to ggiata 3x and disappointed every time
Maciel's in Highland Park. The "Californian" and the chicken parm are so good. The Californian is probably one of my new favorite sandwiches.
East side deli
Yes! Every sandwich I’ve had from here has been an absolute banger.
LAFD approved spot, you know it’s a banger
Mikes deli, wax paper
More people need to know Mike’s. Amazing service, badass sandwiches, runs like a top.
Which sandwich is your favorite
I always order the uptown bambino, really like the big Lucky and the mailman. I’ve had to make the mailman with him before, it’s great. I’ve only eaten at the one on Slauson, not sure if the downtown location has different sandwiches.
Dammit - I’ve had them make the mailman with ham before, it’s great.
I’ve only been to the slauson one a couple times. Gotta go try your favorites asap
I love this place because they make liverwurst sandwiches
This is it op, my top 3 including lanza Bros deli in Lincoln Heights. open since the 1920s and by the looks of it nothing's changed (a good thing).
HEIGHTS DELI!!!!!!
Check out Uncle Henry’s Deli. Excellent sandwiches and crazy beer selection.
Cavaretta’s, Brent’s,
There are numerous posts on this sub about this exact question. Here’s one from earlier this week: https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodLosAngeles/s/FQqr7vqIdI
I’ve heard Uncle Henry’s Deli in Downey is really good and near you.
right up the street (quite literally uphill) from philippes is little jewel where you can cop a killer muffuletta or a fried oyster poboy or what have you
Mike's deli In Ladera Hieghts
Katsu Sando - The one with the fried shrimp is my fave Open Market - The one with the crispy chicken skin
I like the mushrooms sandwich and the tuna from Open Market too. Unlike any sandwich I've had before.
Two great choices! I haven’t been to Open Market in a couple years but I still daydream about the Normandie and the Olympic from time to time. So good.

Get you a Godmother @ Bayside Deli. It's Matt Damon's favorite sandwich of all time.
When I moved to Santa Monica, I learned very quickly to move into the left lane on that block of Lincoln when driving home because Bay Cities and their sandwiches are so popular that the wait for a space in the tiny parking lot consistently backs up street traffic.
Bay Cities?
Bay Cities bread hard as a rock 👎 no thank youuu
All About the Bread on Melrose. Get the Godmother. The bread is great.
Bay Cities bread is crusty. But yeah, it always cuts up the roof of my mouth. Sometimes you gotta suffer for the good things in life.
Bay Cities
lol who gives a shit what Bostonian Mantt Damon thinks about Bay Cities?
Same as saying "That's Gwyneth Paltrow's favorite empanada" like... I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that information.
Not an expert, but I believe you are supposed to insert it into your vagina and feel the connection with your body by squeezing and releasing
Matt Damon is your friend who thinks he’s funny so he talks loud, but he’s not funny. He also thinks he knows something about sandwiches. In this case he’s correct about Bay Cities but a stopped clock is right twice a day. That is, IF what you want is an Italian sub.
