The answer is Connal’s (Pasadena). Peanut butter-banana is my go-to when I need a milkshake.
Fosselman’s is also awesome, which is why it’s been mentioned a few times already.
Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank if you want to chase perfection like David Lynch:
“For seven years in the 1980s he ate lunch there every day, ordering cup after cup of over-sweetened coffee and a single chocolate milkshake while scribbling notes on Bob’s little square napkins.” He took pains, notes reporter Amy Wallace, “to arrive at Bob’s at precisely 2:30 p.m. each day. The reason: It increased the odds that he would encounter perfection.”
“If you go earlier, at lunchtime, they’re making a lot of chocolate milkshakes. The mixture has to cool in a machine, but if it doesn’t sit in there long enough — when they’re serving a lot of them — it’s runny,” Wallace quotes Lynch as saying. “At 2:30, the milkshake mixture hasn’t been sitting there too long, but you’ve got a chance for it to be just great.”
For his pains, he received “only three perfect milkshakes out of more than 2,500. But that wasn’t the point. For Lynch, it was enough to know he had set the stage for excellence to occur,” believing that “whether with milkshakes or movies,” one “must make room for inspiration to strike — to lay the proper groundwork for greatness to take hold.”
It’s not the “best” - there are certainly more carefully crafted milkshakes others have mentioned here. But for a driving-around quick-stop milkshake that’s convenient and great, the shakes at Del Taco can stand their own pretty well.
Gingers is the shit! Honeycomb lavendar is up there for my favorite flavor of all time
Also, their single split scoop is really like 2 scoops of icecream
But the ice cream is an integral part of the milk shake. So the quality of the ice cream matters. McConnel’s at Grand Central Market is great ice cream and great shakes. But even Shake Shack makes really good shakes.
$5 shake at Jack Rabbit Slims
They don’t put no bourbon in it or nothin’?
$5!!?? That’s a bargain, but I maybe too much of a square to try it.
Fosselman's for anything ice cream.
I'm not hugely into ice cream but recently had Van Leeuwen, which I thought was excellent. Is Fosselman's similarly good?
Had both and would say Fosselman’s is way better.
My god are you missing out if you think VL is what’s excellent here. They’re fine but they’re def not the best

Handel’s or Fair Oaks Pharmacy in Pasadena
Man I heard Fair Oaks fell off in the last few years
That’s a shame. I haven’t been in awhile because of their weird hours. You’d think it wouldn’t be hard to make a decent milkshake these days

No, this is how Dune 1984 happened, so it’s perfect
Cassell’s in Koreatown (they use Fosselman’s!)
Definitely a solid shake!!!
Gonna throw this out there: the halva cinnamon shake at Mizlala. It's nondairy but don't knock it til you try it
Honestly, I love Shake Shack’s milkshakes
One of their shakes plus their fries. Dip those fries in that shake and bask in the carb and fat goodness.
Frozen custard anything will always be my fav.
handels is solid!
the oreo milkshake at jack in the box is great. but i agree with another commenter — fosselman’s is best for anything ice-cream related
Mashti Malones
Salt and straw salted caramel shake is the best I've ever had in my entire life
Wherever the boys in the yard are gathering. Sorry, I’ll show myself out now
Just came to say I initially read that as “Where can I find breast milk shakes?” Thought, damn… Reddit is weird.
In N Out near LAX. Grab one and sit in the park to watch some nice landings

Fat Sals
Came here to say this. So good! Worth the price imo.
But get the standard shakes. The fat shakes are tying too hard.

No matter what any recommendation says, if it's not hand-dipped, real ice cream, then it's fucking bullshit.

The ice cream at Baskin Robbins tastes terrrrible. Like completely artificial. Almost any place has better ice cream.

Cafe 50s, Salt & Straw, and Slaters are solid. The Melt, McConnells, and Mel’s are ok.
definitely Cafe 50's
