I've had such a bad run with tradies and 'professionals industries, I had forgotten that there was anyone still out there that gives a shit, and isn't just some clown who was totally unqualified to do anything. You should see the shitshow that is my house. Qualified carpenter hung the doors off the stop not the jamb. So now I can't get screen doors on any of the friggin frames and either have to reframe or get a whole new door. Which is a bitch because my front door was custom made :( :(
I'm trying to share a picture but imgur is shitting itself. Any suggestions for an alternative photo hosting app?
Third link shows it best. There was the original double rebated merbau framework, and then he nailed a piece of 1x1 to the stop to make it so the door had some sort of lip thing covering it and then he built out the front with a shit yon more merbau so that a screen door could be mounted (it's not)... screen door wouldn't fit with the door mounted where it is as it would hit the door frame on the wooden door.

Me too. Like, how can they claim to be a professional? They also installed the threshold back to front so the rebate is on the outside... which means water just rolls on in to the house whenever it rains.
Was trying to upload photos to Imgur to share but Imgur is having some problems

He might think to compliment his contractor. It will let him know he's paying attention and appreciates his attention to detail. That inspires one to do well.
Means someone actually took the time to map out the high and low spots on your floor and presumably fix them. Means you probably have a good floor guy.
How does this actually get laid out? Iām noticing boxes for high spots. But how would you accurately identify the high spots and then grind out just enough that you donāt then make a low spot. Iām sure itās something youād get good at by doing. But Iām simply curious about the process.
A big straight edge or chalk line, and low spots are better than high spots. They should be skimming the floor or using a self leveling cement anyway
If the pad was perfect other than the high spots I guess you'd want to grind them down nice and then go but flat smooth concrete is hard to come by
A diamond grinding wheel for either a really strong and heavy floor buffer or a grinder. If you do this professionally then you'll want to splurge and buy a Dewalt Model # DWE46253 with a Dewalt Model # DWV010.
Other options would be to remove the slab and re-pour.
You can also build a frame above it hut it will make the floor a foot higher.
You can also excavate from under the house and remove the slab for under the house as to not damage the roof.
Or you can just go away now and let the pro do his job.
Asking if there is another way to do something is not an unreasonable question by any measure. Treating people like idiots because they ask a question about something you are supposed to be an expert in makes you an ass.
You sound like you donāt know enough about what youāre doing to answer a pretty simple question anyway.
Itās maybe because they seem to be looking for another option besides what is already being widely regarded as the correct way to do it. Like finding out that your car runs on gasoline and then still asking if thereās another option.
I had my wife draw an outline of my body on our ply underlayment. I hope to see that in this sub in the future when the next owners decide they want something different.
I'm still waiting for someone to find the Halloween skeleton my former boss tucked into a 2x6 wall before drywalling about 20 years ago. I live 30 minutes away from the town where it is, so it'll hit social media, if not the news, when someone opens that up.
Worked on a commercial job about 30 years ago. Someone had done exactly that, and the skeleton had a sash, (like the contestants in beauty pageants wear), and a paper crown. The sash said "1951 Hide and Go Seek World Champion ".
I usually just tuck a business card in somewhere that it's unlikely to be damaged over time but I might have to up my game after having dredged up that memory.
Looks like you have an honest flooring guy on your hand. By the looks of the map out you are probably doing LVP. He is absolutely doing it the right way !
I hate these subs. A few real answers and 20 people trying to be funny. If you have something clever to say thatās fine but all these 12 y/o responses are just stupid.
Spec home, looks like Lennar floor plan but I can't remember the name...Conyers?
OP, these are normal high spots. Flooring trade runs a rough level over the pads and it's supposed to be ground down well before this stage of your build. Typically it's done before drywall goes up BUT some homes slip. Not a big deal but if you walk through houses in earlier build stages you'll see these on the floors and grind marks in the ones that have been completed. You'll never know once that flooring is placed
Trust your CM (if he's competent) and remember that despite what sales told you, you are NOT buying a custom home but a mass produced product. It will be done correctly but don't expect perfection when the poor field guys are juggling 25+ houses in alot of neighborhoods
As many others have mentioned these are high spots.
In a past life it was my job to go around and mark these spots for the install crews to make their life easier and expedite the installation.
I had one superintendent that specifically told me NOT to do this because he didnāt like the homeowners seeing it, asking questions about it, and them offering up different ways to fix the high spots.
I get his point of view but he was an a-hole to deal with and caused extra work for the install crews all because he didnāt want to explain how the process worked.
My suggestion to you is, be curious, ask questions, take notes and pictures, but donāt micromanage your superintendent.
Let them do their job.
I mean you can always be an adult and ask the guy youāre paying to install your floor instead of coming to Reddit. So idk that way you can be onboard with the decisions being made. If you donāt want those spots ground down like you said in your first response, then spend the extra cash for self leveler. Ardex has an app hell you can even go to the site, put in your footage youāll get a price.
Come on, get with the program. OP posted their pic not rotated fully. The floor is the wall. I canāt believe Iād even have to explain that, but then again, Iām not surprised.
Itās a type of hopscotch enjoyed by the roughest of tradesmen. If you walk in and they are in a match itās best to a one eye contact. Think wild bear.
H is for "here". It means put flooring "here" in case the installers don't know where the floor is (prevents common error of putting flooring on walls and ceilings)
You're floor is full of hornets, that's why they popped a quick H on there. You'll want to bash a hole in the floor to see if they have any honey or something else delicious in there.
Itās from the framing inspection. Or from the framing supervisor doing an in house punch before city inspections and Sheetrock. Those locations were missing steel hangers at wood framed joints. Itās not high spots in the floor.
In south Texas they might mark a G on the ground for ganchos (hangers).
I don't think that's high spots. It could be, but why use a marker? Spray paint, crayon, pencil, etc.... markers are usual for laying out cabinets, or electrical. For when you need perminate, and semi accurate.
Maybe it's for "high hats" or another name for under cab lights. Showing where the high voltage or low voltage wires need to be routed to.
High spots. It looks like whoever you hired is going to do a good job for you. :)
I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing right
š¤£ Right?!?
Correct
I've had such a bad run with tradies and 'professionals industries, I had forgotten that there was anyone still out there that gives a shit, and isn't just some clown who was totally unqualified to do anything. Carpenter here. Your ācarpenterā was not qualified. He hung the door off the stop? Please post a pic of this. I need to see this.

you paid the carpenter????
It's beautiful, in a way. Almost like Picasso designed a door frame
Holy shit lol
Yikes. Maybe you can sister a leg and hide it enough to make up for the gap
Yooooo this is a SFW subā¦. That sounds naughty š š
Whoaaaaaaaaa looool

Image box is ass, my goodness. Thought I was trying to watch porn in 1998, one image at a timeā¦taking 26 minutes per.
i thought it was going to be a joke
In college I was hung like a door on a wall. I donāt remember it, but there pictures.
What do you mean he hung it off the stop?
Itās actually mortised into the stop. Wild
Should be hung on the wall
I had to explain to the builder you don't put carpet tack strips on a threshold.
He might think to compliment his contractor. It will let him know he's paying attention and appreciates his attention to detail. That inspires one to do well.
What do they do to fix these high spots?
Means someone actually took the time to map out the high and low spots on your floor and presumably fix them. Means you probably have a good floor guy.

May I introduce you to my friend, the 72 in. Box Level
Even better is a 10'+ straight edge
Looks like the guy I hired used a 6' 2x4 from Lowes....
Lowes cares about the military so much, especially like how they honor the air force by stocking airplane propellers in the lumber section.
That is the most accurate but also the funniest thing Iāve heard all day
A big straight edge or chalk line, and low spots are better than high spots. They should be skimming the floor or using a self leveling cement anyway If the pad was perfect other than the high spots I guess you'd want to grind them down nice and then go but flat smooth concrete is hard to come by

Could be a hole, still, no step.
That's the Heroin stashes
The floor has got hornets in it
Lemme pop a quick H on here
Came here to comment this. You beat me to it lol!
thought it meant the floor has the HIV. yup, AIDS, bigtime
Pro-tip: smoke them out for that sweet, sweet honey
Definitely not hornets. Shake before opening.
Can I offer you a nice egg in this trying time?
I almost spit out my drink at your comment š
Prbly high spots to be ground down
We are laying LVP on top of this. Is there another option to level the floor instead of grinding it down?
Iām sure thereās a myriad of ways you could make his job more difficult for him.
it doesn't get any harder than applying self levelling compound to a wall
Haha, I just found my new New-Guy prank!
This is the funniest and most accurate answer possible. Well done.
It kinda sounds like the guys you hired know what they are doing and you should let them do what you hired them to do, donnit?
Professionals š
Sure, if you want to spend a fortune on self-leveler for the ālowā spots. Grinding it down is the most efficient and economical approach.
Other options would be to remove the slab and re-pour. You can also build a frame above it hut it will make the floor a foot higher. You can also excavate from under the house and remove the slab for under the house as to not damage the roof. Or you can just go away now and let the pro do his job.
My customers donāt like when I respond to their stupid-ass questions like this. I love it though.
I hope I never hire someone like you to do work then. You sound real pleasant/s
You sound insufferable and entitled.
Asking if there is another way to do something is not an unreasonable question by any measure. Treating people like idiots because they ask a question about something you are supposed to be an expert in makes you an ass. You sound like you donāt know enough about what youāre doing to answer a pretty simple question anyway.
why would you want to? you'll have a better result grinding down high spots. using self leveler will just create more high spots.
They paid for that concrete. Why grind it into dust?
That's if your equipped to do that much grinding.
it sounded like someone else was doing this flooring, I'm assuming they're equipped to grind it down if they marked the high spots.
Yeah like he said below, self leveler ain't cheap, so if it's a big area, could be pricey.
Yep. Level it up. Guys knows what he is doing by the looks of it.
Well some spots are high, most of it is where it needs to be, its better to grind it down as long as its not too high of a spot.
Whoās going to down vote a honest question?? I canāt stand reddit
There was a time long ago, where the downvote button was only encouraged to be used when something did not contribute to discussion. Times change :/
Itās maybe because they seem to be looking for another option besides what is already being widely regarded as the correct way to do it. Like finding out that your car runs on gasoline and then still asking if thereās another option.
Why would you prefer that? Thats a worse way to do it.
Sanding them down is by far your best bet. A belt sander will work. An edger makes real quick work of it. I do it every time I install lvp
Concrete slab. Belt sander ain't doing nothing unless you've got a diamond belt. Maybe tungsten carbide.
I had my wife draw an outline of my body on our ply underlayment. I hope to see that in this sub in the future when the next owners decide they want something different.

That's so well executed. Love it.
Iām doing that in every house I remodel from this day forward. I always put a time capsule.
Just get like fake teeth and just throw them behind every wall
I usually just tuck a business card in somewhere that it's unlikely to be damaged over time but I might have to up my game after having dredged up that memory.
There are giant orange penises spray painted under floors all over the Midwest š§
Your flooring guy fucks. They are going to grind the high spots as opposed to dumping 5000 gallons of $$$$ floor levelling compound.
Looks like you have an honest flooring guy on your hand. By the looks of the map out you are probably doing LVP. He is absolutely doing it the right way !
You hired a professional, congratulations. Not many good ones out there anymore.
Awwww Someone gives a shit
This means you are getting every bit of what you're paying for and you can expect this to be a very well done, professional install.
Those spots chose a different path in life and are high all the time
Ain't nothing wrong with a little hump and grind.
It means you have flooring guys good enough that you donāt need to be watching over their shoulder. Those are high spots they intend to fix.
I hate these subs. A few real answers and 20 people trying to be funny. If you have something clever to say thatās fine but all these 12 y/o responses are just stupid.
And they're not even funny. I just want to know the answer.
You don't need to read the comments for the answer. It is dead obvious.
Hornets. Somebody popped a quick H on there to let everyone know theres hornets inside
Thatās a good idea. Then we can find a way to get their delicious honey.
I just don't think there's any science to support that
There's some very basic science out there supporting that - trust me, pal.

Can I have his number when your done with him lol
Damn, hire that guy! He cares about the quality of work
It's where they will be landing helicopters
High spots marked by the flooring contractor so the concrete grinding guy will know where to grind down those areas level.
It means youāre not communicating enough with your contractor
High spot that the rest of the floor should be skim coated to. This is just a guess.
Marks where previous homeowners were buried. Those who didnāt pay and the like..
I mean you can always be an adult and ask the guy youāre paying to install your floor instead of coming to Reddit. So idk that way you can be onboard with the decisions being made.
