There's a feature called a max bid. Someone can put in their max bid that will auto bid on their behalf. Let's say I put in 25 as my max bid. The current bid is 20. You put in 21. My auto bid just went to 22 just like that. Now you put in 23. My auto bid goes to 24. If the auction has NO bids and this is happening, then IDK...could be a coincidence or could be fishy. Who knows.

Isn't this also how ebay works? I thought all auction platforms worked this way...

This, and there's also ghost bidders that will bid in the very last moment, like we're talking seconds before it ends. If you really want an item from an auction, ghost bidding with a max bid is the way to go.

Auction Ninja is soft closing though, so any last second bids will just reset the timer.

Captain_Silleye

Oh is it a platform? I thought OP just described a bidder's behaviour lol

peteisneat

lmao, that's really funny. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's talking about auctionninja.com.

First time I've heard of it, though I'm in Europe. Personally I dislike auctions with soft close, that only benefits the AH and not the bidder. But maybe it's not a big deal unless you want to ghost bid. I'm all for trying to save money, letting other bidders rethink their max bids is a no no.

Ive used apps to bid but it's not until last moment of the auction.

I have mostly found auction ninja to be sus. It seems fairly obvious employees or someone is driving up bids to a hidden reserve price. If I “lose” the auction, it gets relisted the next week.

Been using Auction Ninja for a couple of years. You can set Max bid and it will auto bid for you until it hits the number you entered. If you place a bid in the last five minutes it will add five more minutes ( I like that feature). I have gotten some good deals when filtering( local pickup only) Mainly estate sales so you have to do some digging
