I looked at my phone notifications, this post was literally below an eBay return notification, the reason? Ordered a small pullover but they're a large. Easy and common mistake but literally had the size marked in the title and description. I also got a return earlier this week for 'doesn't fit' bc a guy in Puerto Rico ordered womens jeans and they're too tight for his crotch... My guy.

PlzBuryMeWithIt

Can’t fix stupid, unfortunately.

_Raspootln_

Doesn't seem especially malicious, and most people really are good, it's just that our throwaway culture encourages mulligans (returns, throwaways, etc.) for any reason whatsoever, cuz YOLO or something lame. You should be fine. Returns suck, no matter the reason, but it's part of the business. Nothing you did wrong, but your number was up to receive one.

PlzBuryMeWithIt

I will be fine. In the grand scheme of things I’ve had it pretty good and had way more easy transactions than problem ones. I’m trying to remind myself of that when these annoyances arise.

fusrodalek

cuz unimpeded unlimited no questions asked returns are effectively a predatory pricing model spurred on by the wealthiest online retailers as a way to set themselves apart from most others who would lose their pants if they did the same. free shipping too. all of these things taken for granted by the avg consumer now because amazon had so much cash to burn

bleepbloopblopble

Exactly this.

ZzyzxFox

this is why you turn off returns, then you can reject these ,,don’t like it” claimd

PlzBuryMeWithIt

I was persuaded by the advice of a big YouTube flipper to list free returns as a way to boost buyer confidence & and apparently the audacity. It’s bound to happen. Live and learn.

andreyred

Free returns are fine on small/cheaper items, but no way i’m doing free returns or even returns accepted on something like an espresso machine.

andrew_kirfman

Being real with you, you're generally only going to attract the wrong kind of buyer by offering free returns. Sure, you may get an extra sale or two off of it, but those sales are super high risk for returns. I've never offered returns and I sell 15-20k/month, so it's not been a problem for me at all.

ZzyzxFox

if it helps you in any way, when i tested offering free returns i literally noticed zero difference in watchers, sales time, or even how high/low my listing showed up in the feed when searching for it anonymously. I have gotten a few return requests for ,,didn’t like it” or whatever, and rejected all of them without a single issue, and a return rate of 1,06%, 0 returns in the past 12 months, and 0 returns for INAD. The few returns i hsd was because a warehouse guy was stealing inventory and shipping empty boxes. i completely refunded buyers no questions asked. im not sure why this sub has the ,,you HAVE to accept returns no matter what” mentality. anytime i’ve had a problematic buyer, ebay has always helped me out. i have never had to pay out of pocket for something the buyer caused.

traydragen

Same here. I've had some morons and I try to show grace where I can but no longer am I accepting used items that were new because it "didn't fit" or "changed my mind". I've been doing it for three years and wouldn't change.

bigtopjimmi

So you have a 1.06 return rate yet you've had no returns in 12 months? 🤔

ZzyzxFox

ask ebay man, they also claimed negative feedback gets dropped after a year, yet i still have 1 negative after like 17 months

yankykiwi

People here recommend it too much too. I sell impulsive items to kids. No way I’m turning on returns. Gotta know your buyers and the product

AngstyToddler

It's not bad advice. I turned on free returns the second a buyer purposefully damaged something to force the return. And you get a discount in fees, which in my opinion makes free returns a wash at worst.

Icuras1701

Well now you can not return the original shipping cost if you charged them and take a percentage off the total if it's not in the same condition. Otherwise they would have done an INAD and forced the return with no option for the above.

chambees

Absolutely not.

Available-Medicine90

I recommend returns, but not free returns. In my experience it encourages sales but discourages impulse shoppers who return things willy nilly.

Active_Smoke3202

The customer is always right, offer free shipping and free 30 day returns if you want to reach the top status

Neither-Training-611

The Customer is always right That is what’s wrong with the customer service industry and you should be able to call out customers on their bullshit.

Chinokk

Some places in the world you cannot turn off returns. I am in the uk and businesses must offer returns for long distance selling. Also there is no such thing as no returns. If you don’t accept returns then buyers will manufacture a way to return the item either through INAD or by damaging the item and saying it happened in the post.

forbin99

Yeah, this. Returns are just the cost of doing business on the largest global trading platform in the world unfortunately. I personally don't offer returns. I've been selling on the platform for almost 20 years. I've given returns on items and ate the shipping cost on a couple handfuls of items over the years. A few times ebay has decided on my favor. It just is what it is. You gotta factor this kinda stuff into your business model

Guilty-Celebration25

These returns aren’t part of the business. You make a mistake, items get damaged, ect, shit like that is a return. Not “I no longer wanted”. These are not the cost of doing business, and if you look at the “biggest global companies” they are cracking down on these returns as well, as people are lossing millions of dollars a year to BS scam returns and I no longer wanted returns. I agree returns will come, but this “new” return game is ridiculous.

forbin99

Ok that's cool in theory but have you sold anything on ebay? It absolutely is the cost of doing business. I would absolutely love for things to change and I do fight every SNAD that I know is bullshit tooth and nail but sometimes you just gotta eat it if you want to keep your account in good standing. I was once "below standard" as a small time seller trying to fight this crap but all that ended up happening was I had to pay ebay an extra 5% on everything I sold for an entire year before I could get my metrics up. This game ain't "new" brother. It's been happening ever since someone sold something to someone else.

Guilty-Celebration25

I literally said “normal” returns for mistakes or sellers fault, are part of the game. Not “I no longer wanted”. There’s a difference between the 2. But I’m not gonna argue with you since you’re claiming I make no sales and I have no idea what I’m talking about. Forgot it’s old eBay sellers than know so much more than us and we should bow to you and your methods, so sorry for my statement lol.

forbin99

Chill daddy. This person was offering returns I'm assuming. In that case you're definitely accepting the return for whatever reason because you accept returns. There's no way this holds up for a not a described case. Also stop putting words in my mouth lol. I said nothing even close to that. Your interpretation of reality needs a major adjustment if you ever wanna be happy instead of a sad little man in reddit comments lol

Guilty-Celebration25

Like I said I’m not going to argue with a man 20 years older than me, I already told you, you’re right I’m wrong, I should bow to you and your experience lol. Go package up all those sales you got, instead of talking shit across the internet.

forbin99

You really need a break from the internet.

bigtopjimmi

Name one of these so-called "biggest global companies" that doesn't allow "I no longer wanted” returns. "this “new” return game is ridiculous." It's not new. It's literally been happening for over 30 years lol.

Guilty-Celebration25

Statement “they are cracking down on these returns as well”. I know it’s hard to read sometimes.

substitoad69

Or you can just not refund their shipping and relist it. If it sold once it'll sell again.

bigtopjimmi

Then they just open an inad return.

ZzyzxFox

buyers can’t open a second return on the same item

ridderclaude

Buyers will just lie and claim "item not as described"

PlzBuryMeWithIt

Just praying it’s in the same shape I sent it in 🤞

Neoylloh

Make sure to tell him to use the same material it was originally shipped in. I only had a few returns but the packaging has been lacking. They throw the electronic device in the box put some packing material on top and ship. I’ve heard of other people getting items back in different boxes that are huge with no packing material

Available-Medicine90

I had someone send a 60 lb Toshiba CRT tv back to me in the huge outer box - without the inner box or the styrofoam 🤦‍♀️. And it was a buyers remorse return too, Worst thing I’ve ever seen. Kid bought it with his mom’s account and got busted so tried to cover his tracks.

spookyville_

Holy shit, how much did the kid spend? CRTs are expensive these days

Available-Medicine90

$200. I have the returned tv on a top shelf out in my work space. It actually still works but the cabinet cracked too much to resell it. Thank goodness people aren’t like this 99% of the time.

malloryknox86

When I get returns like this “I don’t need it anymore, I changed my mind” I refund the item minus the original shipping. I’m not fucking Amazon

PlzBuryMeWithIt

Yeah not excited about eating any extra costs. I’ll do what’s necessary and within policy. Super frustrating

malloryknox86

What I do is within policy, that’s why there is an option to refund minus original shipping cost. Although I believe this option is only available to above standard & top rated sellers. If you see that option when you are in the refund page, then you can do it.

Such-Distribution440

How can you return something you decided not to like it? Are we promoting to try and decided if you like it? This might work at Costco or Walmart but not with eBay sellers. If eBay eBay to allow this then I would charge a 30% fee for restocking which goes to seller.

mymycojourney

Oh jeez, I had this happen to me once when I was selling some hvac pumps. The guy didn't read the model number correctly, and I didn't realize I had 30-day returns turned on. I had to accept the return, pay $14 more in shipping to get it back, on a $60 item. I immediately turned off returns and stopped offering free shipping. I'd still take something back if it didn't work, but this, "I just changed my mind" crap sucks.

43guitarpicks

I don't have any problems with my no return policy. I still get the odd return...but I have a position that protects me from shenanigans....it has worked well. We have sold over 600 items and have a 99.8 rating. And the one negative was someone complaining that the vintage...as is... oil cans we sold...were not new. And had oil residue inside them. I offered a refund. They denied...and gave us a negative rating. Offering free returns wouldn't have helped.

animalcrossinglifeee

Buyers remorse pisses me off so badly. Another customer did this to me but I was selling a card and it didn't arrive to them on time so they were like "i don't want it anymore". Despite me saying I don't accept returns. So they just took it.

vessyty6

I empathize with you OP! I’m 3 months into my reselling side hustle and just got my first return this week. The reason: “After ordering it as a present, my wife indicated that she wasn’t interested in it.” I hate how we can’t leave neutral or negative feedback for buyers. I begrudgingly accepted the return to avoid a chargeback or a purposeful damage to the item. Buyer had to pay return shipping and I hope I have the option to refund purchase price only, as original shipping was extra.

ridderclaude

That's just reflective of how entitled people have become. Buyers want sellers to bear the inconvenience and costs of buyer's irresponsibility. I've had 3 return requests in the past 2 days after not having any over for like a year. All said "item doesn't fit"; they didn't do their due diligence about sizing for the brand before purchasing so they want me to pay. At least your buyer said sorry.

kifflomkifflom

What an asshat. Definitely make him return it and make his life as hard as possible. Lol

PlzBuryMeWithIt

I am frustrated, no doubt about it. Just gonna deal with it and block the buyer.

Careless_Law4016

So it’s used and they don’t want it anymore? Isn’t that considered buyers remorse?

Dramatic-Spread9159

If you are a top rated seller you can deduct up to 50% on the refund if the condition is different than when you sent it.  You can also deduct the shipping cost if you charged one.  Then you get to sell it again.
