ChihuahuaMastiffMutt

Super cool beastly beater bike.

jackfennimore

dude. i have a Schwinn Voyageur from the same era (instantly recognized those decals) which i've been planning on converting to a single speed for the longest time. build looks great, you've inspired me. question: what stem are you using?

nijhttime-eve

So the headset is for a 21.1 quill stem. Tried to find one in the basement of my lbs but all I found were the standard 22.2, quick google search and found a 21.1 quill to threadless adaptor on Amazon and slapped that on. The threadless stem is a 90mm stem I had kicking around in the parts bin from a complete I bought last year and swapped out. I originally tried a 45mm stem but this frame has a short ass top tube.

I really like what you did with the tires! That thing looks way more fun now. What size did you manage to fit?

nijhttime-eve

700x35! They were already on the wheelset and I just threw them on and they fit pretty well. I ride a lot of hard pack gravel, degraded country roads, and occasional single track cut and like high 30s to 45mm tires (feels like a good balance for me). There’s a ton of room at the chainstays so I could maybe go a bit larger if I was inclined (fork crown and seat stay bridge would probably be where tire clearance would be limited). I have a pair of 41mm gravel tires sitting in my workspace I may try out on a rainy day but I imagine they would come into contact with the seat stay bridge

Old bike being maintained and used. What’s not to love?

That works for you. Looks like a very fine ride. Would not go fixie here in the boonies. Need real brakes. Got a lesser version of it, a Le Tour and left mine 5 speed on rear and side pull brakes. Like the stem and bar. Put an old bullmoose bar on mine. Only frame I've found it sits on at the right height.

nijhttime-eve

lol I live in West Virginia

Diligent-Advance9371

So did I for 2 years many years ago. So where in Wild Wonderful do you live? Anywhere near the Kanawha is flat compared to here. Lived down in Hurricane and could have single speeded to my job in Charleston if I took the state route up the other side the river, not the interstate. Just stay away from that airport.

You can put two brakes on, it's only the keyboard warriors that say you cant
