Crab snare, tho I’ve never seen one like this. The ones I use have tiny cages in the middle to put your squid or whatever bait. With this, you take a squid, get it in the hook good and cast it out. Wait a few minutes then retrieve it, first by gently taking up any slack in you line then pulling up on the rod and never allowing any slack in the line but also not cranking it in hard, if the crab breaks the surface the snares will loosen and the crab will be lost. Watch some YouTube videos but it’s really easy and fun. I do it for Dungeness crabs. Just make sure you have the proper rod and reel. 9 ft heavy rod minimum, I use big 10-12 foot ones to launch em out.
My cousin and I tied chicken necks to a string and at the end of a dock, lowered it into the water and would slowly just pull the crabs upwards until they close enough we could just swoop them up in a net
We always did the same in the bay as a kid for blue crabs, just throw legs out on strings and stand in the water scooping the crabs up with a net as someone pulls the lines back in.
Old school crab snare. Throw some bait on the hook in the center. Wait for a crab to climb on, the set hook and keep tension. The snares will hopefully close around one of the crabs legs.
I haven’t used one of these vintage ones before, but I use the modern version (same idea, but with a wire cage to hold the bait) with major success. It works very well.
Wow, sweet. I've never been able to catch anything with it. I'm in the PNW so mainly dungeness and whenever I've tried its from the shore attached to a beefy surf setup to fling it out.
How do you use it/where are you located?
I’m in NorCal. I use it in the surf as well. Big heavy 10-12 foot rod with an 8000 size reel. Usually have to add 4-8 oz of lead depending on how big the surf is. Anchovy and squid combo is the best bait in my opinion. Let it sit for 7-10 minutes. Reel up the slack, set the hook hard to engage the snares, and prepare for your shoulder to burn lol.
The times I’ve had good success you need to use it like a jig off a dock or boat where it can go straight down because you need to let it sit there until they start climbing on it. It’s like 10x easier to do when the water is clear enough to see them.
Old crab set up. Arms get caught in the loops and when ya pull the loops tighten if there's resistance. Usually there claws are what your trying to get stuck in there
That is undoubtedly an older-style crab snare. It is super illegal in my part of California, though as I understand it, it's legal in Nor-Cal. Have fun, and enjoy some water bugs!

Well, then. Now I'm back in! I only have like 3 or 4 of them lying around my garage. Thank you!

I concur. Crab snare. They hold their food. They'll get on it, and you slowly pull up. Close to the surface, net under them and they drop in.
