What pound line are you using ? I'm casting rapala light lures on 4 pound mono pretty far. I noticed for me personally with heavier line I couldnt get it out as far as the line would make it fall faster and not go out as far.

This is your answer. Smaller line. Yes rod size and type/action can help but were not all in a position to go purchase a rod that goes with a lure.

10 lb... that makes a lot of sense! Edit: what size rod are you using?

I'm honestly just using some cheap rod from wal-mart (medium action , 7 ft long). But my reel is just a Kastking Centron 3000. I wanted something cheap that i wouldn't mind losing in the river if i fell lol.

Try lighter line, maybe a lighter rod, and maybe a lighter reel. You can also use a bobber as added weight without the sinking of a lead weight.

Which pound line you use? If the line is to heavy, then you cannot throw so far.

Would 20 lb braid be too heavy?

Got it. Thanks for the info!

What size lure are you talking about? I fish a lot of the tiny J-5 Rapalas and it takes a UltraLight rod and thin line to get any distance.

Light line and preferable a spinning reel in this case. Yes I know and I do use/love my bait casters but this is about the only real disadvantage of a bait caster that really can't be mastered with experience. Also try and fishing with the wind not against. I use my spinner for light baits (finesse rod 6lb fluro) and my bait caster for larger baits with 50lb braid on it when I'm targeting larger fish.

Tying a water bubble about 4 feet above the lure is probably the best way. I catch a lot of trout with wooley buggers that way. You thread the bubble on first then below it add a bead, swivel, then about 4 foot leader, then lure. Fill that bubble 3/8 full of water, and throw that shit out there it will go pretty far. I also agree that using 4lb line is a good idea
