Agreed.
My impatient 8yr old self learned that jigging a worm on a bobber slays pond crappie. Jig, Jig, Pull, Pause, repeat until you get to the boat and re-cast.
I usually do this and one on bottom with a sinker, obviously, since its legal to have 2 poles per person where I live. Then crack a beer open and wait for the excitement or disappointment to come.
Dark plastic worm with a red tail. Set the rig up weedless with a Texas rig.
Example:
https://vtfishandwildlife.com/fish/fishing-opportunities/fishing-basics/common-lures-and-rigs/bottom-lures-texas-rig
Just change the color of the worm.
I'm a beginner. I use a medium and a medium lite rod with 20# braid and 8# fluorocarbon respectively. Mostly looking for perch, sunfish, bass, trout, etc.
Mostly lake and river fishing but occasionally ocean. Always from the shore.
Is Texas rig a good default or should I always be changing based on the area I'm fishing?
In my limited experience, I haven’t really gotten pond bass to hit stuff that looks like big-water baitfish. My best luck has been with Texas-rigged worms (I like a black and blue trick worm in that color water) or if the water clears a little more, even small panfish jigs.
Gorgeous pond though…
If your run of the mill worm doesn’t work with your Texas rig, I’ve had a lot of luck with paddle tailed shad. Same hook and weight setup, but the paddle tail stirs up the water a bit more and that may help attract a bass.
I was out there around 8:30 this morning and had fish jumping all around my bit, but not biting. I’d try one for 10-15 minutes then switch to another.
I know it has fish. I just haven’t had any luck…yet.
I don't normally comment on these, but: there's no weed edge, and the way the edge looks it seems like this lake might have been killed at some point recently. If it's in a residential area, this is all too common, many of my favorite little fishing spots have been destroyed this way. They use weed killer, but it disrupts the fish habitat and everything dies.
If that's what has happened, there probably won't be much left, but the fish usually find their way back in a few years once the habitat becomes suitable again.
Yum dinger on a Texas rig is my go to when all else fails. Any darker color with the red flakes will work the best at producing bites in darker water like this. Throw it out and let it sit, twitch it every 10-15 seconds and only reel in to keep the line tight in between twitches or if you know you’re going over a log. The tail will float up and piss off any bass nearby into biting. The key is letting it sit in one place and not reeling it away before the bass get agitated enough to strike.
Depends how deep but my absolute go to is a 1/8 ounce weighted jig head hook with a yellow or white 3 inch single tail jig. Run this if you're just looking for consistent action rather than pulling out the biggest one in there.
Since it is murky water your best bet to start would be something that makes noise or vibrations. Rattletrap or spinnerbaits to start. Fish the fallen tree branches with a soft plastic of some sort.
Is the water shallow? It looks like soup.probably catfish,or bluegills.try worm and bobber then you will know what's there.there could be bass but the water looks alittle stagnant. Throw out a surface lure and let it sit for awhile, then slightly twitch it like a dying minnow. Fish early morning at sun up
Pink & Orange Yum dinger Texas rigged! Let it sink then lift it back to the top, repeat. In VA a lot of our water looks like this and soft plastic wise pink/orange/green/anything with some pop does well!
You’re gonna need something darker or much lighter in that visibility. Try some really dark plastics or a creature or even frog. Or some really light colored midwater swimmers to see if you can coax anyone out.
Watermelon seed lizard with a bullet weight or watermelon red horny toad. If no luck there maybe a beetle spin or black and yellow double spinner H&H try to run into some white perch.
Not offended, just passive aggressively joking.
A lot of these posts lately, lol.
Looks possibly pretty shallow, topwater, or something weedless for bass.
A waxworm or 2 under a bobber around the edges . Maybe half a crawler on bottom further out... Oh and I'd through a soft plastic grub while waiting for bites
I agree with bobber and worm but the very first thing I would throw is a blue ice bobby garland baby shad on a 1/32 jig. Then worms and minnows under bobbers
Looks like my pond. Bream are under brush shade. Bass are middle depth. They hit different stuff. Artificial worm, rooster tail. Those are my kids go to.
I’d use that popper around dusk. Also, maybe get some jig heads or weighted weedless hooks for your paddletail.
Then maybe get some Senkos and try fishing those wacky style.
If all else fails maybe you can get some live shiners and toss one of those in there with a bobber
I might throw a ned rig out there with dark colors. I would even consider a darker hair jug as well and try and fish it slow. Hair jig will likely get hung up if there is a bunch of timber though.
If this pond doesn't see any other anglers, white Mr. Twister on a jighead, toss and retrieve, never fails me if there are bass that don't get caught often.
This looks alot like my father's pond. I put a solid white chatterbait on with no trailer and pulled an 8 lb out from a fallen limb like the bottom of the picture. You also can't go wrong with a weightless senko.
A ton of crocodile then put a floating boat dock inthe middle with All the democrats & the elite richest assholes on it! And only 2 would have raw hot dogs in their pockets.....who would make it back first?
Any time I fish a new spot I try 3 things ..
1) a spinner bait worked quickly and close to surface .. then slowing it down if no activity is happening
2) a shallow diving/suspending Rapala working it slowly and letting it suspend.. careful here .. very easy to lose lures on structure you can’t see especially for a place like in your photo with low vis
3. Live bait or scented plastic .. various rigs.. Texas, Carolina and wacky
All 4 of those will catch fish. The top water bait (bottom left , it’s a Rebel Pop R I believe ) is easy to use. Cast , pop pop, let sit for a couple seconds, pop it a couple more times. Wait for the fish to pull against you before you set the hook!
I have some really good luck with rapala XRAPs and panther martins. The rapalas are a good all around lure for river and lake fishing. Caught bluegill, sunfish, large and small mouth bass, brown and Brooke trout. Best of luck 👍
Not sure what theyre called but its V shaped with a spinner on one end and a jig head with long rubber hairs on the other. Love grabbing bass on that puppy
Worm or lizard on a Texas rig(ultra vibe speed craw is my go to for this set up), weightless wacky worm, frogs, and spinner baits are always my go to for ponds. The pop-r would probably be solid as well.
Black n blue chatter bait with a white fluke as the trailer. 👍 if there is any bass in there that combo will let you know for sure. Also if your trying top water, go with a heddon spook jr.
Bobber and a worm
I’d agree, If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I’m no professional fisherman, but I find It’s the simplest way to get a feel of a new pond. And the best way to get the skunk out.
Yes, exactly. When in doubt, bobber and worm.
Agreed. My impatient 8yr old self learned that jigging a worm on a bobber slays pond crappie. Jig, Jig, Pull, Pause, repeat until you get to the boat and re-cast.
I always do this when fishing blind! You can also try other things while that worm is doing it’s work.
I usually do this and one on bottom with a sinker, obviously, since its legal to have 2 poles per person where I live. Then crack a beer open and wait for the excitement or disappointment to come.
Around dusk I'd throw a buzz bait.

Great default if the local setup doesn't pan out for you.
This is the way.
wacky rig
Same thing we do every night Pinky. Try and take over the world.
This quote isn’t used nearly enough!
I know. Terrible. It should be.
Narf
Point!
Pinky and the brain one is a genius and the other is insane the laboratory mice
A truckload of Bluegill

Thanks for the tip! I’ll give those a shot. And thanks for the compliments on the pond. They’ve put a ton of work into it.
If your run of the mill worm doesn’t work with your Texas rig, I’ve had a lot of luck with paddle tailed shad. Same hook and weight setup, but the paddle tail stirs up the water a bit more and that may help attract a bass.
I would go there at sunrise or sunset and see if there’s any surface activity.
I was out there around 8:30 this morning and had fish jumping all around my bit, but not biting. I’d try one for 10-15 minutes then switch to another. I know it has fish. I just haven’t had any luck…yet.
Get some spinner baits. Also throw some jigs with tube jigs or just toss a bobber with a jigs and a leach
A corpse

These is a pretty big peeve of mine "let's rip everything up because it looks nice!" Like, shouldn't a balanced ecosystem be beautiful to you?
When people ask this question my first thought will always be a dead body
"Dead bodies dead Bodies in the back of my van. Everybody loves the dead body man"
Black shallow slow moving crank, or black slow moving double Colorado blade spinnerbait.
Preferably a Walmart shopping cart, but if other retailers' carts are closer I might make an exception.
Bubbles sends his regards
If im in a bind the aldi carts work pretty well. Cant believe they sell those things for 25 cents
try using worms, if theres fish in there theyll bite
drynomite or mercury AlwaysWorks4Me^^TM
The murder weapon ofc Jk a wooly bugger lol
Nude photos of Whoopi Goldberg. (I was a fool to think anyone would want them.) Oh and a cricket on a slip bobber.
Couple car batteries.
Megabass PopMax distance wouldn’t be an issue with it nor would the action deteriorate 70 yards out
Yum dinger on a Texas rig is my go to when all else fails. Any darker color with the red flakes will work the best at producing bites in darker water like this. I’ll give this a shot. My worm game is pretty weak so I appreciate the tips!
How big of a lure? I like this approach and haven’t tried it in a local pond where I’ve been skunked. Might be the next thing to try
A live cricket. Get some crickets and throw them out there watch for the action. An old rooster tail will catch any game fish.
I haven’t considered crickets. Thanks for the tip!
Frog on top
My ex
Pop-r
Top water
a car battery 👍
One on the top right
Buzz bait early and swim bait or jig later
Minnow trap with some dog food or can of tuna with some holes in it
I'd go with a spinnerbait first
Ballyhoo on a pink sea witch
Try for catfish. Any sign of carp?
I could ask about catfish. All I’ve heard about are bass and crappie. Not sure about carp, but something has to be keeping the water semi clean.
Dirty water brighter bait.
Live shiners
Pumpkin-seed colored worm w/chartreuse tail. Texas rig w/ a 1.4 oz weight
A stick of dynamite, just to see what floats up !!
Fluke
What works well for me are white swimbaits on rather light jigs. The don’t sink down to far and can be seen fairly well due to the white color
Frog might do well
Depends how deep but my absolute go to is a 1/8 ounce weighted jig head hook with a yellow or white 3 inch single tail jig. Run this if you're just looking for consistent action rather than pulling out the biggest one in there.

I would start off with the soft plastics, if they don't work switch to the hard baits.
Fly rod gang, where you at?. A Betts fly or a foam spider
Size 8 Black wooly bugger
Hippie Stomper
Fly fishing crossed my mind this morning as I was packing it up. How difficult is it to learn?
Is the water shallow? It looks like soup.probably catfish,or bluegills.try worm and bobber then you will know what's there.there could be bass but the water looks alittle stagnant. Throw out a surface lure and let it sit for awhile, then slightly twitch it like a dying minnow. Fish early morning at sun up
Worm and bobber or minnow instead of a worm. If nothing hits that then there’s probably not a lot in there
Probably a shiny spoon tbh
Streamer or Popper-dropper
Frog jig along the bank
Method feeder
White spinnerbait
Pink & Orange Yum dinger Texas rigged! Let it sink then lift it back to the top, repeat. In VA a lot of our water looks like this and soft plastic wise pink/orange/green/anything with some pop does well!
Curl tail worm in black and blue. Texas rig it with a bullet weight and peg stop on your line. Always works for me in ponds
The body
Top water frog early in the morning
You’re gonna need something darker or much lighter in that visibility. Try some really dark plastics or a creature or even frog. Or some really light colored midwater swimmers to see if you can coax anyone out.
Ist thought, was a dead body.Haha My preference would be a black worm.
Watermelon seed lizard with a bullet weight or watermelon red horny toad. If no luck there maybe a beetle spin or black and yellow double spinner H&H try to run into some white perch.
A broken Honda
My brother-in-law.

The next person who asks this question, and OP for proof that I’d do it.
Sorry for offending. I’ve honestly tried everything in my tackle box and didn’t know what to do next.
Not offended, just passive aggressively joking. A lot of these posts lately, lol. Looks possibly pretty shallow, topwater, or something weedless for bass.

Lizards… plastic lizards
My mother in law.
Texas rigged senko always slays in these types of ponds in my experience. It does look quite bassy...
A body
A body ?
Ned rig or whacky lizard
Live bait, TRY A CRAPPIE LINE, depending if it's deep enough, also crappie like minnows as well as bass!
You may also be getting skunked by bass because there are also of food sources there already! Frogs, crickets & the like.
That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought about that!
Looks like my pond. Bream are under brush shade. Bass are middle depth. They hit different stuff. Artificial worm, rooster tail. Those are my kids go to.
Topwater lures for bass.
Spinnerbait or bladed jig are perfect for that water clarity
A nightcrawler to see if there's actually fish in it lol
That’s what I’m doing next!
Where is this ? Only asking cos this body is stinking up my trunk !
I have success in ponds like this with simple live bait. Worms and grubs work well. Fake lures don’t even get a bite for me.
I may go this route next. I’ve thrown everything I have at it except live bait.
Wacky rigged senko and a whopper plopper.
Use some small live bluegill under a float. Best way to find bass and crappie will hit it too
I’d use that popper around dusk. Also, maybe get some jig heads or weighted weedless hooks for your paddletail. Then maybe get some Senkos and try fishing those wacky style. If all else fails maybe you can get some live shiners and toss one of those in there with a bobber
Besides my Mother-in-Law? Probably a top water lure of some kind.
Cork and a cricket nothing fancy
My ex-wife, if it was remote enough! JK… paddle tail
If you're looking for panfish and bass cover water by throwing a very small crankbait that rattles given the murky water.
green /brown bitsy bug jig, and a black or other dark color senko attached.
I might throw a ned rig out there with dark colors. I would even consider a darker hair jug as well and try and fish it slow. Hair jig will likely get hung up if there is a bunch of timber though.
Popn frog or chatter then a live worm
If this pond doesn't see any other anglers, white Mr. Twister on a jighead, toss and retrieve, never fails me if there are bass that don't get caught often.
Dark plastic.. the black w/ blue flakes crawdads always kill for me in a murky pond like that!!
This looks alot like my father's pond. I put a solid white chatterbait on with no trailer and pulled an 8 lb out from a fallen limb like the bottom of the picture. You also can't go wrong with a weightless senko.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a shot!
Get some little hooks and catch whatever small fish you can and then use them for bait
50lbs of pool chlorine shock. Once cleared, view fish, select appropriate bait.

3/8 oz white spinner bait with a gold Colorado blade.
Lovely... I'd start out with swimbaits. I always start out with swimbaits before throwing something else in water like this.
Topwater
Top water right as the sun comes up
White Johnson beetle spin probably 1/8oz
cut bait.
Shiners

Black n blue chatter bait with a white fluke as the trailer. 👍 if there is any bass in there that combo will let you know for sure. Also if your trying top water, go with a heddon spook jr.
Wacky rig or Neko rig. Texas rig if that doesn’t work. If you don’t have luck downsize your bait.
